“Please Default Me”: Daniil Medvedev During His Opening Round Match Against Aslan Karatsev at Italian Open 2021

World No.2 Daniil Medvedev lost his third consecutive match in Rome as he was defeated by fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev in the second round of Italian Open 2021. The match ended with the usual Medvedev ranting that was ever-present last week in Madrid as well.

Medvedev‘s problems with the clay court continued in Rome as well. Karatsev cut short the third seed’s torrid time on the court. The match was highly anticipated as Karatsev was in fiery form and Medvedev was World No.2. Until 2-2, Medvedev didn’t show any signs of cracking.

But serving at 2-2, Medvedev’s troubles with clay surfaced as Karatsev caught his movement. Medvedev was quickly broken and Karatsev led 3-2. Furthermore, Medvedev’s problems didn’t end there. He continued to make the same mistakes, and Karatsev broke him for the second time in the match to see the opportunity to serve for the match.

Karatsev had to work a little on his serve to win the set. He converted his second set point to win a dominant first set, 6-2.

Medvedev showed some progress in the second set as he toned down his mistakes, but his mental strength was volatile. Although he couldn’t break Karatsev, he was decent on his serve and continued ahead. Finally, leading 3-2 in the second set, Medvedev saw his first break point of the match but failed to convert it, and Karatsev leveled the set.

But a disheartened Medvedev lost focus and gave Karatsev the breakpoint. Karatsev graciously accepted the point and converted it to break Medvedev and march towards a famous victory. As he was livid with himself, Medvedev started his usual ranting on the court, this time in Italian. Seeing Medvedev rant, his other compatriot Andrey Rublev was seen laughing in the stands.


Seeing his imminent loss, Medvedev pleaded to the supervisor, Gerry Armstrong to default him from the match. With such negative energy, Medvedev didn’t win a point on Karatsev’s serve from 3-3.

“Gerry, please default me, it would be better for everybody,” Medvedev said.

In just 78 minutes, Karatsev finished the match and sent the World No.2 packing – 6-2, 6-4.

Medvedev, Serena Enjoy Monaco Grand Prix

Tennis players are used to speed, from blasted winners to rapid movement around the court. But on Sunday, some stars were treated to a different type of speed at Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix, which was won by Max Verstappen.

One of the ATP Tour players in attendance was World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, who is a Monaco resident.

“One of my dreams came true today,” Medvedev wrote on Instagram. “Had an amazing chance to watch F1 in Monaco.”


WTA Tour legend Serena Williams not only watched the race, but also played a special role at the grand prix. The American waved the chequered flag to signify the end of the race.


Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev enjoyed themselves, and Mischa poked some fun at his younger brother, who had a conversation with three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

“I always told Sash he needs a driving coach…” Mischa joked on Instagram.


Felix Auger-Aliassime watched the action with his girlfriend.


Brazilian doubles star Marcelo Melo, the countryman of racing legend Ayrton Senna, got his first taste of Formula One action.

“Amazing weekend here in Monte Carlo,” Melo wrote on Instagram. “It was the first time for me watching one Grand Prix live.”

Medvedev Taking Hard-Court Mentality Into Paris

Second seed Daniil Medvedev is delighted with the conditions in Paris ahead of Roland Garros as he aims to replicate his strong form on hard courts and progress past the opening round at the tournament for the first time in his career.

“I have to say coming here was my first practice yesterday, I was playing amazing so far. I didn't feel that it was clay. I was playing like on hard courts, and hopefully, have some expectations,” Medvedev said. “I really like the conditions here so far, and looking forward to making a great tournament, to be honest. I feel amazing. I feel happy about life. I feel happy about tennis. First time in two months. So that's just a great feeling.”

In September, Medvedev lost in the first round at Roland Garros to Marton Fucsovics, with clay being a surface he has struggled on in comparison to hard courts over the years. The Russian holds a 148-59 record on hard and his 10 titles have all come on the surface, including last year’s Nitto ATP Finals crown and three ATP Masters 1000 titles in Cincinnati (2019), Shanghai (2019) and Paris (2020).

This is in comparison to an 11-20 record on clay, with Medvedev recently losing to World No. 26 Aslan Karatsev in Rome and Cristian Garin in the Last 16 in Madrid. However, the 25-year-old is focused ahead of his opening round clash against World No. 37 Alexander Bublik.

“For me being in the zone basically means not missing the ball, because that's where I'm strong. That's when I know that, for my opponents, it's going to be tough to beat me. Even of course sometimes they will succeed, sometimes the best ones when they play well. But it makes it tougher for my opponent,” Medvedev said. “For me it is to just practise hard, try to make the routine good, not make stupid decisions outside of the court, and then like this, the zone will come on the court one day.”

On Thursday this week, Roland Garros revealed a statue of 13-time champion Rafael Nadal. This prompted Medvedev to be asked where he would want his monument to be placed in the future if he were to have the success that the Spaniard has had. For Medvedev, the answer was clear.

“Oh, in Russia. That's an easy answer, because that's my home country, and of course if I manage to do something amazing on the court, and when I say 'amazing,' I find that yet I have not done anything to have a monument, so I need to do better,” Medvedev replied. “Then, I would be really proud if it was somewhere in Russia, of course better in Moscow but tougher in Moscow, there is going to be a monument of Daniil Medvedev.”

Medvedev Leads Russian Contingent: Team Russia won the ATP Cup earlier this year, and members of that team have played a major role on the ATP Tour this season. Reigning Nitto ATP Finals titlist Daniil Medvedev reached his second Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, but he has only tallied a 1-2 record on clay. The second seed has never won a match at Roland Garros, but he will attempt to turn that around this edition.

Medvedev Records First Win At Roland Garros

Daniil Medvedev recorded his first win at Roland Garros on his fifth attempt as he swept aside Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 on Monday in Paris.

The second-seeded Russian star came into the clay-court major with a 1-3 record this year on clay, with his sole victory coming over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Mutua Madrid Open. However, Medvedev comfortably overcame World No. 37 Bublik to set up a second round clash against Tommy Paul or Christopher O'Connell.

"It feels great," said Medvedev. "But the most important [thing] is the level of tennis. I've been showing, as I said before the tournament, it was not mind games. My opponent can see I was really feeling good. I managed to play consistent today. I actually played much better in practice than today, so there is room for improvement."

Medvedev led Russia to the ATP Cup crown prior to a run to the Australian Open final (l. to Djokovic) in February. He captured his 10th ATP Tour title at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille (d. Herbert) one month later and is currently 19-5 on the season.

After a lively start to the contest, where both players broke their opponents serve, mistakes started to leak off Bublik’s racquet as Medvedev pulled away for a 4-2 lead. The World No. 2 continued to dominate proceedings, winning 10 of 12 points on Bublik’s second serve in the first set, with the 23-year-old committing 19 unforced errors. While serving at 3-5, Bublik tamely handed Medvedev the opener as he double faulted for the third time in the set.

Medvedev stormed into a 4-0 lead in the second set, as he continued to capitalise on Bublik’s poor serving display. Bublik managed to gain one of the break’s back and did save two set points at 2-5 after Medvedev had conjured up the second of those with a sensational cross-court forehand. However, his parity was short-lived as Medvedev moved to within one set of victory when Bublik mis-timed a forehand long in the following game.

Bublik’s deft touch and variety around the net started to cause the Russian a few more problems at the beginning of the third set. This, combined with greater discipline on his groundstrokes saw Bublik break the Medvedev serve at his third opportunity to move 5-3 ahead. Back-to-back double faults from 30/30 saw Medvedev respond immediately and he broke again, prior to holding to love and closing out victory in one hours and 54 minutes.

Bublik, 23, will now shift his focus to the grass swing. The Kazakhstani, who has hit the most aces on the ATP Tour this season (381), has reached the Antalya Open (l. to De Minaur) and Singapore Tennis Open (l. to Popyrin) finals, with a quarter-final showing at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Ruud).

A clay-court stalwart also advanced Monday when 15th seed Casper Ruud battled past home favourite Benoit Paire 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(4).

The Norwegian has played his best tennis on this surface, reaching the semi-finals at the past three clay-court ATP Masters 1000 events he has competed in (2020 Rome, 2021 Monte-Carlo, 2021 Madrid).

Ruud only made 25 unforced errors across three hours of action, while Paire struck 70 unforced errors. The Next Gen ATP Finals alumnus will next face Poland's Kamil Majchrzak, who eliminated French wild card Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Medvedev: 'I'm Capable of Doing Big Things'

Daniil Medvedev got a much-needed confidence boost on Monday that he can replicate his hard-court success on the clay of Roland Garros.

“I feel really hopeful,” said Medvedev, after a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Alexander Bublik. You could see it today in the match, I'm feeling that here, at least this year with this weather, with these balls, I can play like on hard courts. It doesn't feel different than the Australian Open for me coming into this tournament.

“Now, when I'm coming to these big tournaments feeling like this, I know I'm capable of doing big things. [At the] Australian Open I was in the final. If I lose here in Roland Garros, it's probably going to be because my opponent will play really good. As I said, I feel very confident, I move well, slide well… So I'm feeling great.”

Medvedev’s reward for a first victory at Roland Garros on his fifth visit to Paris will be a second-round meeting with American Tommy Paul.

“[It] feels great,” said Medvedev. “But most important is the level of tennis. I've been showing, as I said before the tournament, it was not mind games. My opponent can see I was really feeling good. I managed to play consistent today. I actually played much better in practice than today, so there is room for improvement.

“That was one of not many matches where I was really tight. Hopefully, it can be only better for the next rounds. As I say, [I’m] really happy first of all with the win and then with my level of play also.”
