Ten years ago, Russian Nikolay Davydenko had teenagers like Daniil Medvedev in awe as they watched him beat Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro to win the Nitto ATP Finals title the first year the season finale was held at The O2 in London.

Davydenko became the first Russian to win the season-ending event and, to date, remains the only Russian to have won the prestigious title. But Medvedev, now 23 years old and ranked No. 4 in the ATP Rankings, will try to change that next week when he makes his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals, which is in its second-to-last year in London.

The Moscow native has been drawn in Group Andre Agassi along with No. 1 Rafael Nadal, No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and No. 7 Alexander Zverev of Germany.

“I think all of us young Russian players saw this title. It was amazing, he's the only Russian to win it,” Medvedev said. “It feels really good, I think for the country, to be back here, to represent my country, and hopefully I can just show some good tennis and win some matches.”

Medvedev has been doing a lot of winning in 2019, his best season on Tour. The 6'6” right-hander leads the ATP Tour in wins (59), finals reached (nine) and is one title away from tying Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic (five) atop the ATP Tour 2019 titles leaderboard.

By making six consecutive finals – Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati (title), US Open, St. Petersburg (title), Shanghai (title) – the Russian joined the Big Four of Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Andy Murray as the only active players who have reached six or more consecutive finals.

The Russian last played at the Rolex Paris Masters, where he fell in his opening match to home favourite Jeremy Chardy in three sets.

“I'm still confident about my game,” Medvedev said. “Paris was not the result I wanted, but it happens, it's tennis. Jeremy played a great match, so good. I had my opportunities, didn't use them. Every match you play, you can lose or win, there's no draw or anything like in other sports. This time I lost, but I know that if I manage to be in great shape on Monday – that's what we're trying to do now with my team – I have chances to win if I play good, and that's what I'm going to try to do.”

Medvedev will face Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas during Monday's afternoon session. Medvedev leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 5-0, which includes a straight-sets win in the Rolex Shanghai Masters semi-finals last month.

“Hopefully, we're going to have a lot of matches to come throughout our careers, in the later stages of the tournament,” Medvedev said of himself, Tsitsipas and Zverev. “Hopefully we can have a lot of great matches to come.”

- Staram się odzyskać poziom, na jakim grałem w USA, Petersburgu i w Szanghaju. W październiku zrobiłem sobie przerwę, bo czułem, że muszę odpocząć. Nie można występować w 40. turniejach w sezonie - wyjaśnił.

W drugiej kolejce, w środę o godz. 15:00 czasu polskiego, Miedwiediew zmierzy się z Rafaelem Nadalem. Będzie to jego trzeci mecz z Hiszpanem. Poprzednie, w tym roku w finałach w Montrealu i w US Open, przegrał. - Straciłem impet. Daniil Medvedev’s week at the Nitto ATP Finals didn’t pan out as he had hoped, but he’s confident that the experience will serve him well in the future.

The Russian admitted that he’s a player who needs a first run to learn the ropes of a new environment before excelling. He lost his first ATP Tour final in 2017 Chennai (l. to Bautista Agut) before bouncing back to win his next three tour-level finals the following year. Medvedev also fell in his first ATP Masters 1000 final this year in Montreal (l. to Nadal) before regrouping with Masters 1000 crowns in Cincinnati (d. Goffin) and Shanghai (d. Zverev).

Although he departed The O2 in London with an 0-3 record in Group Andre Agassi, history indicates there won’t be a repeat if he’s able to qualify again next year.

“I always said that for me, the experience of something new is the key and it was my first time in the [Nitto] ATP Finals,” Medvedev said after his loss on Friday to Alexander Zverev. “I tried to remember if I actually had any good first-time experiences in tennis… I don’t think I ever did.

“I'm the guy who needs to know how it is before really getting into it. Hopefully this experience will help me if I will have the chance to be in another [Nitto] ATP Finals during the next years.”

In July, Medvedev was an outside contender to appear at the season-ending championships. But the Russian quickly leaped into the Top 8 of the ATP Race to London after producing a magical three-month run of results. In addition to his Masters 1000 success, he clinched his maiden ATP Tour crown on home soil in St. Petersburg (d. Coric) and first Grand Slam final at the US Open (l. to Nadal).

Medvedev’s season highlights also include a title in Sofia (d. Fucsovics) and runner-up showings in Brisbane (l. to Nishikori), Barcelona (l. to Thiem), and Washington, D.C. (l. to Kyrgios). He finished the year with more tour-level wins (59) than any other player.

The 23-year-old arrived in London at a career-high No. 4 in the ATP Rankings and is guaranteed to finish the year inside the Top 5. But Medvedev has always strived for bigger and better. He has drastically improved his ranking each year since arriving on Tour and is optimistic that next season will yield a similar result.

“It’s always a question with my team for the next year to come,” Medvedev said. “After the end of the year, we always try to analyse what parts of the season we could have done better [and] what we could do better overall. [But] we are also trying to do the same thing, practise as hard as I can and work physically to be 100 per cent fit.”

Mimo wykluczenia Rosji z igrzysk olimpijskich w Tokio, Miedwiediew bardzo chce wystąpić na przełomie lipca i sierpnia w japońskiej stolicy. Jeśli tak się stanie, to będzie mógł to zrobić tylko pod neutralną flagą. Podobna sytuacja miała miejsce w zeszłym roku na zimowych igrzyskach olimpijskich w Pjongczangu.

Danił Miedwiediew od początku turnieju w Rijadzie radził sobie znakomicie. W dwóch rozegranych w drodze do finału meczach stracił zaledwie dziesięć gemów. W spotkaniu o tytuł Rosjanin zmierzył się z Fabio Fogninim. I, jak w poprzednich pojedynkach, był imponujący i dominujący.
Miedwiediew rozpoczął sobotni mecz od przełamania. W piątym gemie uzyskał kolejnego breaka, dzięki czemu wyszedł na prowadzenie 5:1, by wygrać pierwszego seta 6:2. Druga partia zakończyła się takim samym wynikiem i miała niemal identyczny przebieg. Moskwianin znów na samym początku odebrał podanie Włochowi, a w końcówce podwoił przewagę i odniósł przekonujące zwycięstwo.


Za triumf w Diriyah Tennis Cup Miedwiediew nie otrzyma punktów do rankingu ATP, bo impreza miała charakter pokazowy, zainkasuje za to milion dolarów premii finansowej. Zapisze się także w historii jako pierwszy zwycięzca zawodów tenisowych rozegranych w Arabii Saudyjskiej. W przyszłym tygodniu Rosjanin stanie na starcie innej "pokazówki", w Abu Zabi.

Medvedev ready to take major step at AO 2020

While there’s no questioning the consistent quality of Daniil Medvedev’s tennis and achievements during an outstanding year on tour, perhaps it will be the Russian’s dramatic and, at times, bewildering rollercoaster ride to the US Open final in September that will live longest in the memory.

The 23-year-old arrived at Flushing Meadows on the back of three finals in four weeks, a run that included his first at a Masters 1000 event in Canada and seven days later his maiden trophy at that level in Cincinnati. He had won 14 of his last 16 matches during 20 whirlwind days of tennis.

While logic suggested his battered 6ft 6in frame would finally give way at the last major of the year, somehow he kept going, dragging victory after unlikely victory from a body that at times appeared to be held together by kinesio tape. Despite mental fatigue, cramps, and severe shoulder and leg injuries he kept winning.

And then there was the Russian’s pantomime villain act, goading the New York crowd along the way.

After a hostile Louis Armstrong stadium had booed him throughout most of his third round victory over Feliciano Lopez he riled them further in his on-court post-match interview: “I want all of you to know, when you sleep tonight, I won because of you,” he teased amid the din.

When he walked into Arthur Ashe Stadium to face Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals days later, he was greeted by another deafening chorus of jeers. Yet, even his battle with the locals would be one that would ultimately end in victory.

After Rafael Nadal had finally finished Medvedev off after five sets of thrilling tennis in a title decider that lasted nearly five hours, the Russian had won over a new set of fans with his quirky character, mischievous sense of humour and refreshing honesty.

“I know earlier in the tournament I said some things kind of in a bad way,” he told a 24,000-capacity crowd during the trophy presentation. “Now I’m saying it in a good way. It’s because of your energy guys I was here in the final.”

Four successive finals soon became five when he won on home soil in St Petersburg and he made it six finals in a row and back-to-back Masters trophies when he collected the seventh ATP title of his career in Shanghai.

By his own admission, his late-season form fell away - a victim of his own success during the craziest of summers - but his end-of-year report card spoke for itself.

The Monte Carlo-based Muscovite led the tour with 59 match wins, recorded the most hard-court victories, made the season-ending championships for the first time, reached nine finals, collected four trophies, peaked at a career-high ranking of No.4 and appeared in his first Grand Slam final.

The hard yards had been done under the blazing sun of the Cote d’Azure. Medvedev’s family moved to the south of France when he was 18 and since then the Russian has been based at a small training facility - Elite Tennis Center - in Cannes.

His travelling coach for the last two seasons, quietly-spoken Frenchman Gilles Cervara, hit with Medvedev the very first day he walked through the gates of the club in May 2014 and has since learned to expect the unexpected.

When you think, ‘This shot you have to play crosscourt’, Daniil will go down the line. And when you think, ‘This shot you will go down the line’, he will play crosscourt,” laughed the Frenchman during a recent interview with ATP Tennis Radio.

The rate at which Medvedev has scaled the rankings since Cervara began travelling with him full-time has also come as a surprise.

“I don’t think I could’ve believed this,” he admitted while reflecting on his achievements this summer. “In Tokyo [in 2017] I had just started to work with Daniil full-time, he was around 60 or 65 in the world and hadn’t won so many matches. I had a vision and a strategy to train him but I didn’t have this idea that he could be [No.5].”

The season might have ended on a low - Medvedev didn’t win another match after lifting the Shanghai title - but once mind and body are refreshed, most will expect more of the devastating mid-summer tennis that suggests it could be the Russian who is the first of the younger generation to wrestle a Grand Slam trophy from the arms of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

That trio has won the last 12 majors.
