In the youngest ATP World Tour final since Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic at the 2007 BNP Paribas Open, Daniil Medvedev overcame home favourite and first-time tour-level finalist Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the Sydney International.

"It's amazing," Medvedev said. "I'm really happy. To make it through the qualies, there were so many circumstances. I wanted to go to Auckland, because my girlfriend had a visa to New Zealand, and not even one guy withdrew from Auckland... now I won here. So [it's] just amazing."

One year on from appearing in his first final in Chennai (l. to Bautista Agut), Medvedev needed two hours and 13 minutes to capture his maiden tour-level trophy. It proved to be the catalyst for a stellar 2018 season, with the Russian also lifting titles in Winston-Salem and Tokyo.

Daniil Medvedev stopped Andy Murray’s bid for a third Brisbane International crown on Wednesday night. The fourth-seeded Russian struck 16 aces — and lost just seven of his first-service points — in a 7-5, 6-2 second-round victory over the 2012 and 2013 champion, who continues his rehabilitation from a long-term hip injury.

Medvedev led Murray 3-1 in the first set, before the former World No. 1 won four of the next five games to lead 5-4. Murray let slip a 40/15 lead at 5-5 at the start of a run of six straight games for Medvedev to a 4-0 advantage in the second set.

“I think he served extremely well [and I] didn't really get many chances on his service games,” said Murray. “And then on my own service games I made a few too many errors in the rallies, especially early on I was trying to play a little bit more offensive. In the second set, I made a few too many mistakes, and obviously there was a period in the match from 5-5 where I lost six games in a row. I think when you obviously play better players… they will expose any errors that you make in your game or any shots that you're not hitting particularly well. And he did that tonight.”

Murray, who is currently No. 240 in the ATP Rankings but competing at the ATP 250 tournament under a protected ranking, beat Australia’s James Duckworth in the Brisbane first round. Medvedev, who went 43-24 with three ATP Tour titles in 2018, will next challenge fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic in Friday’s quarter-finals. Raonic hit 21 aces in a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Serbian qualifier Miomir Kecmanovic earlier on Wednesday.

In the final match of day three, seventh seed and 2018 semi-finalist Alex de Minaur defeated fellow Australian Jordan Thompson 6-4, 6-2 for a shot at France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or lucky loser Taro Daniel of Japan.

"I’m extremely proud of how I’ve handled the situation on court," said De Minaur. "It’s never easy to come out and play your fellow teammates. I think I did a really good job of taking care of things at my end of the court and playing some great tennis to get the win."

Millman/Smith Upset Second Seeds
John Millman and John-Patrick Smith defeated second seeds Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(5), 6-4 to reach the semi-finals. The Aussie pairing won 61 per cent of second serve return points (14/23) throughout the 74-minute contest to book a last-four meeting against Marcus Daniell and Wesley Koolhof. Daniell and Koolhof beat British team Kyle Edmund and Neal Skupski 6-1, 7-6(5).

Fourth seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury reached the quarter-finals, beating Grigor Dimitrov and Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-5 in 54 minutes. Ram and Salisbury will meet Austin Krajicek and Artem Sitak in the last eight.

Medvedev Moves One Step Closer To Brisbane Final

Daniil Medvedev is one step closer to a second ATP Tour final on Australian soil, almost 12 months on from capturing his first title at the Sydney International. The fourth-seeded Russian kept his nerve on Friday to defeat 2016 champion and fifth seed Milos Raonic of Canada 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and nine minutes at the Brisbane International.

Medvedev withstood 29 aces from Raonic, saved all eight break points he faced – including three set points at 4-5 in the first set – and struck 12 aces to advance to the semi-finals, where he will face France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or seventh seed Alex de Minaur of Australia.

“I didn't lose one serve in the match, and that was the key before the match,” admitted Medvedev. “I knew that well. The way he's serving, I'm just going to try to be present and if I have my chances, I needed to take it. Finally I took two out of four, which is a good result… So I'm happy about it and I'm happy about the win.

“Of course, it's tough to play tennis in the heat, but I love Australia as a country because I love animals. I love birds, and here it's just totally different from other countries. So it interests me a lot.”

Raonic had three set points at 5-4, with Medvedev serving at 0/40, but the Russian fought off all three and forced a tie-break. There, however, Raonic dominated to take the opener.

Medvedev secured the first break of the match, though, in the second game of the second set and cruised to even the quarter-final with an ace. The 22-year-old needed to bide his time until the ninth game of the decider when he broke Raonic, who won 82 per cent of his first-service points.

In addition to the Sydney title (d. de Minaur), World No. 16 Medvedev also lifted ATP Tour trophies in 2018 at the Winston-Salem Open (d. Johnson) and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships (d. Nishikori). Raonic, 28, has compiled 30+ wins in seven of the past eight seasons.

The Brisbane finalist (l. to Nishikori) has never made the fourth round at a Grand Slam. But Medvedev had his breakthrough season a year ago, going 3-0 in ATP Tour finals at the Sydney International, Winston-Salem Open and Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old will next meet American Ryan Harrison, who beat Czech Jiri Vesely 6-0, 7-5, 6-3 for his first win of 2019. Harrison hit 20 aces and won 95 per cent of his first-serve points (40/42).

David Goffin, the 21st seed, picked up his first victory since 1 September by routing Chile's Christian Garin in 88 minutes 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. Goffin fell in his season opener at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha to Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis.

The 28-year-old Goffin, who will meet Marius Copil of Romania in the second round, aborted his 2018 campaign in early October because of pain in his right elbow. World No. 61 Copil beat Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes.

Medvedev completed a perfect sweep through the first three rounds, winning his third straight-sets match 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-3 against 21st seed David Goffin. “I think was playing quite good today,” Medvedev said.

The 22-year-old advanced to his first fourth round at a Grand Slam in Australia, the same place where it all began for him last year. “I love Australia,” he said.

Medvedev was ranked No. 84 when he captured his first tour-level title at the Sydney International 12 months ago. He followed that title with two more – Winston-Salem Open and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships – to go 3-0 in finals.

Now he's looking to do more damage on the biggest stage in tennis. Djokovic leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 2-0, both coming in 2017.

Medvedev won his first three singles titles last year, and out of the eight times titles were won by qualifiers in 2018, he was the victor in two of those instances, in Sydney and Tokyo. He made the Brisbane final in the first week of this season before losing to Kei Nishikori.

Daniil Medvedev overcame an early deficit to defeat Dutch No.1 Robin Haase 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, also reaching the quarter-finals.

The Russian did not face a break point in the final two sets, finding his best tennis to beat the World No. 54 in one hour and 35 minutes. Medvedev is into his second quarter-final of the season, as the World No. 16 began his year by reaching the Brisbane final (l.to Nishikori).

Playing indoors treated Medvedev well last year, as the Russian claimed his first ATP 500 title in Tokyo. He was second on the ATP Tour in victories indoors, triumphing 17 times. The third seed will next face Slovak Martin Klizan, who ousted German Daniel Brands 7-6(5), 6-4.

Medvedev's Momentum Mounting In Sofia

Thirteen months ago, Russian Daniil Medvedev had never won an ATP Tour title. At the Sofia Open on Sunday, the 22-year-old will have a chance to lift his fourth trophy.

Medvedev defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday to reach his sixth ATP Tour championship match (3-2). The third seed took full advantage of Monfils' second serve, winning 74 per cent of those points to help him break serve four times, advancing after one hour and 16 minutes.

"I want to win. Every tournament I play I want to win. So to be in the final means I'm one step away from it. You never know what's going to happen, I could have lost in the first round [since] I lost the first set [of that match]," Medvedev said. "I'm happy with my performance and happy with my game right now."

It has been another strong week indoors for Medvedev, who ranked second on the ATP Tour last year with 17 indoor wins. He won his biggest title yet last October in Tokyo, also triumphing in Sydney and Winston-Salem. Medvedev is 10-2 in 2019, with his only losses coming against current World No. 7 Kei Nishikori in the Brisbane final and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Monfils entered the clash fresh off a straight-sets win against in-form #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals. But Medvedev kept the Frenchman from controlling rallies by varying the pace to extract errors. In the first set, Monfils lost all 10 of his second-serve points.

And while the former World No. 6 began to find his range towards the end of the match, it was too late. Medvedev lost one break of his double-break lead, but handled Monfils' pressure to reach his second final of 2019.

"I was really tight and it's normal. I think he was tight also and that's why he missed some shots at 5-4 and he didn't miss them at 5-2," Medvedev said. "He had nothing to lose at 5-2 on my serve, he went for shots and made them... I'm happy that I managed to manage the tightness inside of me to put the ball in the court, and that's why I won."

Fucsovics

Medvedev's opponent in the championship match will be Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who advanced to his second ATP Tour final by beating Italian Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in Sofia.

"It's always good to play the final. It's fun to play the final," Fucsovics said. "Anything can happen."

The Hungarian, who improves to 6-3 this year, saved six of seven break points and withstood 10 aces from his opponent to advance. Fucsovics had held two set points in the 10th game of the opening set, but recovered well to reach the championship match after two hours and 16 minutes.

Last year, Fucsovics triumphed in Geneva to become the first man from his nation to claim an ATP Tour crown since Balazs Taroczy in 1982. The 27-year-old lost his only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Medevedev in three sets at the 2018 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

After failing to convert a total of five break points in back-to-back return games, Berrettini found himself down two set points serving at 4-5 in the first set. But, under pressure, the Italian increased his forehand aggression and attacked Fucsovics' forehand side to turn the tables on his opponent, winning three straight games to claim the opener after 53 minutes.

Berrettini was punished for his inability to find the target with a backhand down the line at 4-4 (30/40) in the second set, as Fucsovics soon fired back-to-back forehand winners at 5-6 (30/30) to level the match. The Hungarian then rode the momentum into the decider, establishing a 3-0 lead before converting his first match point.

Berrettini was also aiming to reach his second ATP Tour championship match. The 22-year-old Italian lifted his first trophy last July in Gstaad, holding each of his 49 service games en route to the title.
