Zverev will meet Milos Raonic for a place in the quarter-finals. The 21-year-old is tied at 1-1 with Raonic in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

"We played twice. Once on clay and once on grass, which were two very different matches, obviously," said Zverev. "He's playing very well. Only lost a set to Stan [Wawrinka] in the tournament so far.

"It's going to be a fun match. Obviously not a lot of rallies, not a lot of long points. We'll see how it goes."

The Canadian No. 1 reached the Australian Open fourth round for the sixth time after just more than two hours, landing 51 winners to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(6). The 16th seed has impressed in his opening three rounds, beating Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka and Herbert to reach the fourth round.

"I think there are positive things in [my route so far]. I have been pushed," said Raonic. "I have been having stressful moments in matches that I've handled quite well. I think that gives me some ease going into the challenges further along... You don't really know how you're going to pull out when you have those guys [in your draw] in the first few rounds. But I'm happy with the way I did.

"I haven't had the chance to play that many matches over a long period of time now, so to have that kind of test, to prove well in it, I think it's pretty good."

In 2016, Raonic came within a set of reaching the championship match in Melbourne. The Canadian led Andy Murray by two sets to one before eventually falling to a five-set defeat after four hours and three minutes.

Milos Masterclass: Raonic Soars Into Quarter-Finals

If this is the new and improved Milos Raonic, the rest of the ATP Tour better take notice in 2019.

Raonic produced a glittering performance on Rod Laver Arena on Monday afternoon, efficiently dismissing Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 7-6(5) in a tidy one hour and 59 minutes. The Canadian booked his spot in the Australian Open quarter-finals for the fourth time in five years. He will await either Borna Coric or Lucas Pouille next.

"The tension was palpable in the end," Raonic said after sealing the win on his fourth match point. "I tried to keep him off pace and make him as uncomfortable as possible. It worked today."

For the first hour and three minutes, Raonic could do no wrong. He broke a rattled Zverev four times in a row to surge to a 6-1, 6-1 lead. The German claimed the initial advantage with a break in the opening game of the match, but it was one-way traffic from there for the Canadian. Zverev managed to win just five of 22 points behind his second serve in the opening two sets.

"I have been struggling with my second serve the whole week," said Zverev. "I don't have a lot of rhythm on it, so I tried to figure that out, I tried to work on that. Hopefully I will be better next time."

One of Raonic's 15 aces sealed the first set and a return winner gave him the second. Zverev started to find his rhythm in the third set, but it was too late. He saved two match points at 4-5 15/40 and one more at 4/6 in the ensuring tie-break, but Raonic would eventually clinch the victory with a volley winner on his fourth opportunity.



Raonic now owns a 2-1 lead in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, having also prevailed in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2017. Zverev's lone win came at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome earlier that year.

The former World No. 3 continues his quest to return to the Top 10 after suffering from a litany of injury issues. He most recently withdrew from the Rolex Paris Masters in October with an elbow injury, after undergoing a wrist operation the year before. Now sitting at No. 17 in the ATP Rankings, the 28-year-old is projected to rise to at least No. 14 with his quarter-final run.

Raonic has enjoyed great success this fortnight against tricky competition. After defeating Nick Kyrgios in straight sets, he proceeded to rally past former champion Stan Wawrinka and edge Pierre-Hugues Herbert, before routing World No. 4 Zverev. It was Raonic's first Top 5 win since last year's Mutua Madrid Open, when he ousted Grigor Dimitrov in the first round.

Reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Zverev was aiming to become just the second German since Tommy Haas in 2007 to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals. In 2017, Zverev's older brother, Mischa Zverev, achieved the feat, beating Andy Murray to advance to the last eight.

"I played bad. The first two sets especially I played horrible," said Zverev. "It's just tough to name on one thing. I didn't serve well and didn't play well from the baseline. Against a quality player like him, it's tough to come back from that."

Raonic: "I'm Playing Some Extremely Good Tennis"

Milos Raonic continued his serene, under-the-radar progress into the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday, with just his third Top 5 victory at a Grand Slam championship. His 6-1, 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over World No. 4 Alexander Zverev of Germany was another stepping stone on his journey back to top form.

Wins over Nick Kyrgios, 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka and Pierre-Hugues Herbert at Melbourne Park in the past week, have only strengthened his belief that he’s moving in the right direction once more.

“It's not fun, necessarily, before the tournament starts to look at it and say, ‘Hey, you play Nick, to most likely play Stan in the first two rounds.’ You're sort of hoping for a bit more time to really work your way into things. But then on the other end of it, I dealt with those challenges really well. Right now, I'm here playing some extremely good tennis, I believe. Hopefully I can make that count.”

In full flow on serve, having won 84 per cent of his first-service points (233/276) and struck a tournament-leading 107 aces through his first four matches, the Canadian is turning a corner on injuries to his right calf, right knee and right elbow that have hindered his performances and time on the court in recent years.

“I had a really good off-season,” said Raonic. “I put in some of the best hours in a long period of time, maybe, if ever. I'm not the kind of guy that needs a lot of matches. For me, it's about being sharp, moving well, and being efficient with my serve and this kind of thing.

“If I can get those kind of things, my serve always buys me time in matches and in tournaments to sort of figure things out. It can keep me alive for a while. As long as I have the freedom to put in the work and with no physical hindrances, I think I can always give myself a chance.”

With a 3-10 record against Top 5 opponents at major championships, Raonic’s victory over Zverev on Monday afternoon added to two former wins over then No. 4-ranked Wawrinka in the 2016 Australian Open fourth round and against No. 3-ranked Roger Federer in 2016 Wimbledon semi-finals. The 28-year-old will now prepare to face French No. 28 seed Lucas Pouille for a shot at reaching the Australian Open semi-finals for the second time (also 2016, l. to Andy Murray).

When asked if he’s playing his best tennis since 2016, when he reached the Wimbledon final, the World No. 17 said, “I think I'm a better player than I was back then. I think back then I just found some situations a little bit easier to deal with, because I had three or two good years from 2014 to 2015 before that... Instinct takes over when you have played that many matches consecutively.

“Now you always have to think about things a bit more because you're always trying to search for that rhythm, that sort of what should you do, whereas in those situations I don't think I was really asking myself. I was trusting a lot more.

“I think I'm getting better at the net, because since 2016 I have made an effort every single time I have been healthy, and I could move well and be efficient, to come forward. In the first five years of my career I probably only hit a couple thousand volleys. I'm sure over the past three years I've probably hit tens of thousands of volleys. I think, in that scenario, things are bound to get better.

Looking ahead to his goals for the year, Raonic admitted, “I think I have to re-establish my ranking and consistency throughout a year… I know when I do my things right, I can give myself a chance, and I don't necessarily worry too much about what other people are going about, and what other players are doing. I just sort of try to be on top of my own things and try to deal with them as best as I can.

“If you can't trust [your body], it's going to be a miserable time. You give it what you can, and hopefully it can get you through.”

Raonic Disappointed By Lack Of Firepower

Milos Raonic was riding on the crest of a wave – his game, seemingly, back at its dominant best. The Canadian had won 94 per cent of his service games in four matches, he’d faced just five break points and struck 107 aces at this year’s Australian Open. But Lucas Pouille stopped his surge on Wednesday for a place in his first Grand Slam championship semi-final.

Raonic was clearly disappointed to make a last-eight exit at Melbourne Park for the third time (also 2015 and 2017), admitting, “I felt at the beginning of the match I was tossing the ball a little bit too far forward. It was not helping my serving percentage.

“I knew he was going to make things difficult. I wish I would have just served better and cleaned up some aspects of my game where I felt like I was just a little bit behind.”

The 28-year-old, who reached the Wimbledon final in July 2016, went on to offer some advice to Pouille as the Frenchman prepared to face World No. 1 and six-time former champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

“Not to expect that he needs to do too much more, and just to play within himself,” said Raonic. “I think that's the biggest thing. It's not so much only the opponent you're facing, but it's also the situation, which is a completely new one for him.

“I think he has to stay true to himself, try to do the things he does well, really focus on that aspect more than anything else.”

Raonic will now leave Melbourne to access a right knee that hindered his time on-court in 2018. “There is damage inside my knee that I'm aware," he said. "I'm trying to avoid potentially having to have surgery on. I don't know if I can afford that risk at this moment.”

The Canadian is next scheduled to compete at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, which begins on 11 February.

Raonic Books Wawrinka Clash In Rotterdam

For the second time this season, Milos Raonic will meet Stan Wawrinka in the second round of a tour-level event after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(8), 7-5 at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.

Fourth seed Raonic, who defeated Wawrinka in a four-hour epic at the Australian Open last month, won 86 per cent of first-serve points (38/44) and saved the only break point he faced against Kohlschreiber to advance after one hour and 41 minutes.

The 28-year-old Canadian trails Wawrinka 3-4 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, but has triumphed in each of his past three matches against the Swiss. Wawrinka's most recent victory over Raonic came at this event in 2015, edging two tie-break sets to reach the championship match.

“I got a little bit fortunate to get through that first set,” said Raonic. “I created my opportunities, kept the pressure on and the hard work paid off in the end.

“I did a lot of work in the off season and I’ve been healthy now for a bunch of weeks in a row, which has been a great feeling. I’m now trying to ride it and when I have the chance, play hard on the court and on the practice court.”

Raonic saved one break point at 5-5 in the first set, then saw three set point chances — at 6/4 and 7/6 — disappear, before an aggressive Kohlschreiber took an 8/7 lead courtesy of a deep backhand volley that Raonic struck wide. Raonic went on to clinch his fourth chance and at 5-5 in the second set cleverly drew Kohlschreiber wide before striking a forehand into space. The Canadian then closed out the match with his 21st ace.

Raonic sets up a mouth-watering second-round encounter against Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, who beat Benoit Paire on Monday night.

“It’s going to be tough, particularly as our last match was four tie-breaks, across four hours, in Melbourne [at the Australian Open],” said Raonic. “I hope I will continue to play well, but maybe chance a few things that will help me.”

Another Canadian, 10th-seeded #NextGenATP Denis Shapovalov, weathered a fightback from qualifier Franko Skugor of Croatia to eventually triumph 7-5, 6-3 in 84 minutes. Shapovalov led 4-1 in the first set, and missed out on two set point opportunities at 5-4, with Skugor serving at 15/40, before winning six straight games to a 4-0 advantage in the second set.

Shapovalov will next face Czech wild card Tomas Berdych in the second round. Berdych, the 2014 titlist, defeated Gilles Simon 7-6(8), 6-4 to improve to 22-8 in Rotterdam.

In a meeting of former finalists, Gael Monfils defeated 2017 runner-up David Goffin of Belgium 7-6(5), 7-5 in one hour and 46 minutes. The 33-year-old Frenchman, who fell to Martin Klizan in the 2016 championship match, recovered from a break down twice in the first set and rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to book a second-round meeting against Andreas Seppi.

Fernando Verdasco also advanced, beating Matthew Ebden 7-5, 6-4 in 86 minutes. The Sofia Open quarter-finalist (l. to Berrettini) will meet fifth seed Daniil Medvedev or Jeremy Chardy for a place in the quarter-finals.

It’s no surprise that the ‘Big Four’ of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray hold the four best hard-court records among active players at ATP Masters 1000 events. The quartet has also captured 13 of the past 15 titles at the BNP Paribas Open, which begins this week at Indian Wells.

The FedEx ATP Performance Zone shows the fifth player on the list is former World No. 3 Milos Raonic. The 28-year-old Canadian, currently ranked No. 14, has won 66.4 per cent of his Masters 1000 matches on hard courts. That ranks 13th overall among all players who have played 20 or more matches at this level. The eight-time ATP Tour champion has performed especially well at Indian Wells.

Raonic has advanced to the semi-finals or better on his past three appearances in the desert. At the year’s first Masters 1000 event he holds a 19-7 record, equating to a 73.1 winning percentage.

“I just have a personal calm at this event maybe compared to others. It's a little bit quieter here. It's easier to be around the tennis. You don't have to fight through traffic to get here. You get here with ease, so I think that gives me a personal calm,” Raonic said at Indian Wells last year. “I think the conditions help. Obviously this year it's quite a bit slower than it has been in the past, but the ball still moves through the air, even though the court slows it down a bit, but it's always bounced high. So I think there have been a lot of things that have contributed to me feeling comfortable here.”

Raonic also owns 14 wins at Miami and Cincinnati, Masters 1000 events that are also played on hard courts. Overall, Raonic has advanced to the quarter-finals or better at hard-court tournaments at this level 17 times.

The big-serving right-hander has made three Masters 1000 finals: 2013 Canada, 2014 Paris and 2016 Indian Wells. Fittingly, all of those efforts came on hard courts.

Agassi, who triumphed at Indian Wells in 2001, won 77.8 per cent of his Masters 1000 hard-court matches, while two-time champion Pete Sampras was victorious 77.2 per cent of the time. Nadal rounds out the Top 5 at 76.4 per cent.

Raonic defeated Querrey 7-6(1), 6-4 to move into the third round in Indian Wells. It is the 28-year-old Canadian's eighth appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event, and he has now made it that far on all eight occasions. Raonic has advanced to the semi-finals or better three straight times (2015-16, 18).

The former World No. 3 made just 47 per cent of his first serves, but Raonic played well on the big points, saving all four break points he faced. The 13th seed struck 18 aces to Querrey's 10.

"I didn't serve well today, but I did return well. I put in a lot of returns. Did things well on that end of the court, but I struggled a little bit. In the tie-break I served a little bit better, especially that first point, got a free point, right away made it count," Raonic said. "I just feel like some things I'm doing well. I'm just hoping that I can start to serve better in my next round and continue to play well."
