Milos Raonic overcame a mixed bag of service metrics Wednesday to charge into the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals, defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells.
Raonic, who is one win from a fourth semi-final in his past four appearances in the desert, put just 54 per cent of first serves into play and was forced to fight off three break points. But when he landed his serve the former Wimbledon finalist was in command: He won 85 per cent of first-serve points and 57 percent of second-serve points. He hit 12 aces and four double faults.
One break of Struff's serve in each set was enough to get the job done for the World No. 14 Canadian, who is yet to hit top gear with his best shot. Raonic made just 47 per cent of first serves in his opening match against Sam Querrey before elevating that mark to 67 per cent in his third-round three-set win over Marcos Giron.
Avenging his three-set loss to Struff two weeks ago in Dubai, Raonic improved to 10-4 on the year as he continued to work his way back towards the Top 10 from a low of 35 in June last year.
The most recent of Raonic's three Masters 1000 finals came at Indian Wells in 2016 (l. Djokovic). In the quarter-finals Raonic will face Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic, who was leading Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 when the Japanese No. 74 retired with a back injury

Milos Raonic was at his efficient best on Thursday afternoon, beating Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4 to reach his fourth BNP Paribas Open semi-final in Indian Wells.
The Canadian, who made the 2016 final (l. to Djokovic), didn't have his best serving day – making only 55 per cent of his first serves – but he made the ones he landed count, winning almost 90 per cent (30/34) of his rocket first offerings.
“In a few key moments my serve really helped me out,” Raonic said on court. “I just tried to play consistent, be aggressive when I had the first chance.”

Kecmanovic held his own for much of the his first tour-level quarter-final, stretching Raonic to the corners to start the point and opening up the court.
But the 19-year-old Serbian, who had one tour-level win before Indian Wells, couldn't convert any of his three break points, including two at 3-4 in the second set.
Raonic will meet Gael Monfils or Dominic Thiem for a place in the ATP Masters 1000 final. The 6'5” Canadian has reached three Masters 1000 finals – 2013 Canada, 2014 Paris, 2016 Indian Wells – but hasn't won a tour-level title in more than three years (January 2016, Brisbane).
His power has lifted him this week, but Raonic mixed in his backhand slice particularly well against Kecmanovic, keeping the first-time quarter-finalist off balance.

Editor's Note: Milos Raonic advanced to the BNP Paribas Open semi-finals on Thursday, defeating lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4. It is the Canadian's fourth consecutive trip to the last four in Indian Wells (he did not compete in 2017). This story has been updated to reflect his 2019 run at the BNP Paribas Open thus far.
It’s no surprise that the ‘Big Four’ of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray hold the four best hard-court records among active players at ATP Masters 1000 events. The quartet has also captured 13 of the past 15 titles at the BNP Paribas Open, which begins this week at Indian Wells.
The FedEx ATP Performance Zone shows the fifth player on the list is former World No. 3 Milos Raonic. The 28-year-old Canadian, currently ranked No. 14, has won 67.5 per cent of his Masters 1000 matches on hard courts. That ranks 11th overall among all players who have played 20 or more matches at this level. The eight-time ATP Tour champion has performed especially well at Indian Wells.
Raonic has advanced to the semi-finals or better on four consecutive showings in the desert. At the year’s first Masters 1000 event he holds a 23-7 record, equating to a 76.7 winning percentage.

“I just have a personal calm at this event maybe compared to others. It's a little bit quieter here. It's easier to be around the tennis. You don't have to fight through traffic to get here. You get here with ease, so I think that gives me a personal calm,” Raonic said at Indian Wells last year. “I think the conditions help. Obviously this year it's quite a bit slower than it has been in the past, but the ball still moves through the air, even though the court slows it down a bit, but it's always bounced high. So I think there have been a lot of things that have contributed to me feeling comfortable here.”
Raonic also owns 14 wins at Miami and Cincinnati, Masters 1000 events that are also played on hard courts. Overall, Raonic has advanced to the quarter-finals or better at hard-court tournaments at this level 17 times.
The big-serving right-hander has made three Masters 1000 finals: 2013 Canada, 2014 Paris and 2016 Indian Wells. Fittingly, all of those efforts came on hard courts.
'Big Three' & American Legends Lead The Pack Overall
Djokovic and Federer, who have won 83.5 per cent and 80 per cent of their Masters 1000 hard-court matches, respectively, are Nos. 1 and 2 in the category for all players, not just those who are active. Two American former No. 1s Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras are right behind.
Agassi, who triumphed at Indian Wells in 2001, won 77.8 per cent of his Masters 1000 hard-court matches, while two-time champion Pete Sampras was victorious 77.2 per cent of the time. Nadal rounds out the Top 5 at 76.4 per cent.

Raonic, With Power & Variety, Seeks Masters 1000 Glory

To address the elephant in the room: Fabrice Santoro will not be changing Milos Raonic's forehand to a two-hander, nor will he be proposing the Canadian work on his tweeners or make his net game more cheeky.

The Frenchman, who started working with Raonic two weeks ago, confirmed to ATPTour.com that he doesn't plan on Santorising the Canadian's power game during their one-month trial period.

“I'm not sure it's the best option for him to win matches,” Santoro said in between laughs. “With his power, it would be a bad idea.”

But if you've watched Raonic reach his fourth BNP Paribas Open semi-final this week, you've seen glimpses of the Frenchman's effect. Take, for instance, 4-3, 40/40 point in the second set of Raonic's quarter-final against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

The 6'5” Canadian fed the 19-year-old a cocktail mixture of inside-out forehands and backhand slices, and the third and final slice faded away from Kecmanovic. The backhand slice is a weapon he and his new coach have discussed extensively.

“Everybody moves extremely well laterally. Sometimes you can try to get glimpses of better looks by trying to bring them in a bit more,” Raonic said. “Fabrice has put quite a bit of attention on it. Sometimes I do it too much, but it's a good option to have.”

The added variety is the latest evolution in Raonic's game as the Canadian, a frequent tinkerer of his style and coaching staff, searches for what will help him scale the proverbial hump and win a Masters 1000 or Grand Slam title.

The 28-year-old has been as high as No. 3 in the ATP Rankings and played in the 2016 Wimbledon final, along with three Masters 1000 title matches – 2013 Canada, 2014 Paris and 2016 Indian Wells. But a Big Title has eluded Raonic, along with most of the ATP Tour.

From the 2008 Mutua Madrid Open to the 2017 edition, nearly 90 per cent (69/78) of the Masters 1000 titles were won by the Big Four – Novak Djokovic (26), Rafael Nadal (18), Andy Murray (13) and Roger Federer (12). But since Madrid 2017, a crevice has formed: Six players have won their maiden Masters 1000 title. Raonic hopes to make it seven this weekend.

“It would be there... parallel to the Wimbledon final, if not higher, just because it's going through a week amongst the best players in the world without ending with a loss,” Raonic said of winning a Masters 1000 title.

“It's not easy to do, especially not the ones at the beginning of the year, these two [Indian Wells and Miami], because guys have a lot of time. Nobody is really rushing here. Guys can bring their best tennis.”

Early in his career, Raonic focused on improving his baseline game and lateral movement. The Tour was comprised of great movers who could rally all day from the back of the court. But that style took him only so far.

“I think that got me to the point where I was on the brink of the Top 10, I even squeezed into the Top 10 for a little bit. But I wasn't having the success I wanted at the bigger moments, and I sat back and sort of thought, 'What do I need to do better?'” he said.

A 6'5” power player skidding from alley to alley didn't make much sense.

“I didn't think that would suit my size or my abilities or my strengths to play that way,” Raonic said. “So I felt like it was natural for me to focus on moving forward, to take time away from my opponents, give them looks that they don't get too often throughout the year and try to keep them off balance in that way.”

In the first five years of his career, Raonic hit only about 2,000 volleys. But in the past few years, he's hit tens of thousands of volleys and his practices have revolved around net play.

Last year, however, as he worked with 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, Raonic reached only one Masters 1000 or Grand Slam semi-final (Miami). He recently called Santoro, and the two agreed on a new path.

“More attacking, more mixing up my shots, not being predictable in the sense of not hitting the same ball twice,” Raonic said.

Initially, the hire turned heads. Santoro, The Magician, working with Raonic? But six-time ATP Tour titlist, who also works with the net-charging Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert, is eager for the challenge, even if his new player won't be imitating his two-handed forehand slice or trying any of his trick shots.

“He's a hard worker, he's very professional and he has a big ambition – so it's very easy to work with someone who works hard and has a big ambition,” Santoro told ATPTour.com. “But still, I think he didn't reach 100 per cent of his potential. He can improve a few more things, and that's why I am here.”

Later in the day, Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff fired 15 aces in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in 59 minutes. Struff entered the week at a career-high No. 38 in the ATP Rankings following a Round of 16 run at Roland Garros (l. to Djokovic).

Struff will next meet French wild card and 2017 champion Lucas Pouille, who knocked out No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-2 in just over two hours to improve to a perfect 4-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against the Russian. Medvedev fired 19 aces - including four in a 29-second game - to three for Pouille, but the Frenchman converted on three of his 12 break point opportunities while saving four of the six faced on serve.

Former World No. 3 Milos Raonic missed the entire clay-court season due to a right knee injury. But the Canadian has shown no rust at the MercedesCup.

The sixth seed beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 13 minutes on Friday to reach his second tour-level semi-final of the season in his first tournament since the Miami Open presented by Itau in March. The Canadian won all but four of his first-serve points to set a meeting in the last four against his #NextGenATP countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime, who defeated German qualifier Dustin Brown.

"I got a little bit lucky to start off well and luckily my serve was there for me after that. It's good for me to be playing on grass and to be back here with good memories from last year," said Raonic, who reached the 2018 final in Stuttgart. "It's the grass. It helps me out a lot. I've played really well on it the past four or five years and it's a part of the season that I really look forward to and I'm fortunate to be able to have another chance to play again tomorrow."

Raonic's only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Fucsovics also came in Stuttgart last year. The 28-year-old, who is pursuing his first ATP Tour title of the year, has won all four of their sets by a margin of 6-4 or greater.

In this battle, the 2016 Wimbledon finalist struck 12 aces and saved the only break point he faced. Fucsovics worked hard to stay in contact with the Canadian, but the Hungarian was only able to win 41 per cent of his second-serve points, which proved costly.

Raonic won his only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting at last year's BNP Paribas Open. But that was before Felix found the form that has him knocking on the door of a Top 20 breakthrough in the coming weeks.

"It's going to be exciting. He had a very exciting match today. It was very impressive how he turned things around towards the end," Raonic said. "But it's going to be a tough match tomorrow. He's been playing well over these first six months and hopefully I can have a chance to find the solution to the Felix problem."

Struff

In other action, Jan-Lennard Struff was dominant on serve against 2017 champion Lucas Pouille in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 70 minutes. The German, who recorded his first win in four FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Pouille, is through to his first ATP Tour semi-final since January 2019 at the ASB Classic in Auckland (l. to Norrie).

Struff will now play Karen Khachanov’s conqueror, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, who won 90 per cent of his first-service points to beat American Denis Kudla on German soil for the second time this season. Berrettini won 6-3, 6-3 in 72 minutes, one month on from their BMW Open by FWU Open second-round encounter.

There’s at least one tennis player who wants Kawhi Leonard to stay with the Toronto Raptors next season.
#NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov made his plea to the NBA superstar at Wimbledon before beginning his campaign at the grass-court major.
“Kawhi, please stay with us. Please don’t leave!” Shapovalov said. “Huge respect for him for coming, giving all he had every single game in the season. It’s unbelievable. He’s going to be a hero in Toronto and in Canada for the rest of his life.”
Shapovalov and his countrymen, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic, gathered for a photo opportunity with Raptors championship gear in London on Saturday, celebrating the team’s NBA Finals victory. It was a proud moment for the Canadians, as the Raptors were the first Canadian team to win an NBA title.
“It’s unbelievable, I think, for the city and the country. Just what they did, it goes beyond basketball. They brought the whole country together watching as one. It’s unbelievable for Toronto, I’m super happy,” Shapovalov said. “I want to say congrats to all the guys. They put in a lot of work over the years, a lot of effort.”

The Canadian stars will now begin chasing a title of their own at The Championships. Shapovalov, the 2016 Wimbledon boys’ singles champion, will play Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in the first round. The lefty has shown flashes of brilliance this year, reaching his third ATP Masters 1000 semi-final in Miami.
One year ago, Auger-Aliassime did not compete at Wimbledon, and his ATP Ranking was No. 152. But now at a career-high No. 21, the 18-year-old will try to make his mark on his SW19 debut. Auger-Aliassime opens against compatriot Vasek Pospisil, and he is a potential fourth-round opponent for defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic.
