Tsitsipas Named Greece's Best Male Athlete Of 2019

Reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas was named the Best Male Athlete of 2019 on Monday night at the Panhellenic Sports Press Association Awards.

Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the president of the Hellenic Republic, presented the award to Apostolos Tsitsipas, Stefanos’ father and coach.

“I would like to convey to Stefanos that all Greeks agree that he is a great role model of excellence and he deserves this award. To achieve great things you need three things: talent, soul, hard work. I know how much you have worked together, and you did it. You have shown that the new generation has enormous potential and without hard work, you cannot succeed,” Pavlopoulos told Apostolos Tsitsipas according to GreekCityTimes.com.

Tsitsipas won 54 tour-level matches in 2019, capturing titles in Marseille, Estoril, and at The O2. The Greek climbed to a career-high No. 5 in the ATP Rankings in August.

Stefanos Tsitsipas w minionym sezonie wszedł do ścisłej czołówki męskich rozgrywek. Wygrał ATP Finals, doszedł do półfinału wielkoszlemowego Australian Open oraz awansował na piąte miejsce w rankingu. W uznaniu za te osiągnięcia został wybrany sportowcem roku w Grecji. Ale nie ma zamiaru zadowalać się tym, co ma, i chce sięgać po kolejne sukcesy.

- W ostatnich latach udowodniłem, że potrafię pokonywać najlepszych - mówił, cytowany przez "The National". - Czuję, że jestem blisko. Ale jednocześnie muszę być wytrwały i konsekwentny. Jednym z punktów przygotowań Tsitsipasa do sezonu 2020 będzie występ w tym tygodniu w turnieju pokazowym w Abu Zabi. - Patrząc na obsadę, będzie to ekscytujący turniej. Uważam, że każdy mecz jest ważny i występ w Abu Zabi pomoże mi w mentalnym przekonaniu się, że rozpocząłem sezon w najlepszy możliwy sposób - powiedział.

W I rundzie Mubadala World Tennis Championships, w czwartek, Grek zmierzy się z Gaelem Monfilsem. A knife-edged Saturday (December 21st) Mubadala finale that wedged both Nadal and Tsitsipas, world’s first- and sixth-ranked respectively, to be in a muck sweat after three hours and 12 minutes of epic duel, had handed the 33-year-old Spaniard a hard-rained record-fifth Mubadala World Tennis Championship, a non-ATP affiliated exhibition tournament, over the hard-surfaced concretes at an Abu Dhabi court.

Nonetheless, it had been the 21-year-old right-handed Greek who won the first set after coming back from a break down to seize it on a tie-breaker, but then the world’s No. 1 went back into the match after winning a jawboning set 7-5 that lasted for roughly one hour and a half.

However, the left-handed Spanish with 19 Grand slams singles titles might have had too many weaponries at his arsenals to wrap up the victory, yet had to prove his resilience to level up the scoresheet after the Greek young-heart had been up by 4-2 at some point of the third set.

Meanwhile, downplaying the loss after a jostling 192-minutes Mubadala finale, widely mulled as a warm-up event with the ATP World Tour starting off on January 3rd, 2020, Tsitsipas said after the match, “I’ve never played an exhibition so long, or maybe even any match, so I’m happy I gave it my all out there.

Early Arrivals: Tsitsipas & Medvedev Touch Down For ATP Cup

The biggest names in tennis are all making their way to Brisbane, Perth and Sydney for the ATP Cup.

With the inaugural event set to kick off on 3 January, many players arrived early to Australia and started preparing for their first event of the 2020 season. Greece (led by Stefanos Tsitsipas) and Russia (led by Daniil Medvedev) are among the teams scheduled for action on Day 1.
Tsitsipas is in Brisbane and has begun training with his teammates. Greece joins Canada, Australia and Germany in Group F.
Medvedev and Karen Khachanov reunited for a flight to Perth. They look to guide Russia past Italy, United States and Norway in Group D.
Borna Coric showed his excitement to join Team Croatia in Sydney. They’ll take on Austria, Argentina and Poland in Group E.
Felix Auger-Aliassime wasted no time getting to work in Brisbane with a practice session on Pat Rafter Arena.
Casper Ruud and the rest of Team Norway received some extra motivation by holding the ATP Cup trophy in Perth.

One year after prevailing at the Next Gen ATP Finals, Stefanos Tsitsipas wrapped up this season by graduating to champion at the Nitto ATP Finals (d. Thiem). His outstanding year, which saw him win 54 tour-level matches and also take titles in Marseille (d. Kukushkin) and Estoril (d. Cuevas), saw him named as Greece’s Best Male Athlete of 2019.
After defeating Federer en route to his maiden Grand Slam semi-final this year in Melbourne, he’ll look to further raise the stakes with his first Grand Slam crown.

Germans Save 6 M.P. To Hold Off Tsitsipas-Led Greece

Mies/Krawietz hold their nerve to prevail
Germans Andreas Mies/Kevin Krawietz saved six match points and overcame a partisan Greek crowd to beat Greece's Michail Pervolarakis/Stefanos Tsitsipas and give Germany its first tie victory at the 2020 ATP Cup.

Mies/Krawietz, 2019 Nitto ATP Finals qualifiers and reigning Roland Garros champions, fell behind 0/5 in the Match Tie-break as the Greek faithful roared and waved their blue and white flags. But the Germans stepped up and saved match points at 8/9, 10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 13/14, 14/15 before winning their second match point to clinch the team win 3-6, 6-3, 17-15.

“I'm very proud how we came back and we fought hard. And Boris believed in us, the whole team was behind us all the way through and I'm so happy to win it in the end,” Mies said.

“It's an honour to be part of this team and to play these type of matches. That's what you practise for and that's what you play for all these years, to be in this position and to win the match like this. There's nothing better to finish the match point in the end.”

Germany's captain Boris Becker said the team maintained belief against all night against Greece and after its 0-3 tie defeat to Australia on Saturday.

“If it ends like this I don't mind staying all night long here,” Becker said of the doubles match, which finished around 11:30 p.m. “A big compliment to my players here that they kept their nerves. Most other teams would have given up, and they kept their nerves, they kept fighting, they kept believing, and they played well at the end.

“The whole team, even after the 3-0 against Australia, we stuck together. We worked it yesterday, we had dinner together, and then we spoke about how we wanted to approach today, and everybody believed.”

Earlier in singles, Tsitsipas made it five straight wins against World No. 7 Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-4 to put Greece within one match win of its first tie victory.

“I'm proud of my singles. Doubles went good as well. I'm very proud of myself the way I played and at the same time I feel disappointed. I came so close and, obviously, we're not the favourites, but we could have been the ones that made the surprise today and we didn't, which is such a shame,” Tsitsipas said.

“It was nuts. People loved it. We got a lot of support, more than them, and that's what makes it more terrible.”

The reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion won 83 per cent of his first-serve points against Zverev and broke four times as the German's struggles with double faults – 10 for the night – persisted.

“My serving isn't back yet. Simple as that. I'm doing double faults. I'm serving 120 kilometers an hour, that's not really going to cut it,” Zverev said.


Jan-Lennard Struff started the tie by earning his first victory of the 2020 ATP Tour season, a 6-4, 6-1 win against Pervolarakis. Struff overcame a slow start in which he fell behind a break at 2-3.

But the 29-year-old calmed his nerves and broke twice in the opening set against Pervolarakis, who went 7-8 on the ATP Challenger Tour last season.

“He was playing very aggressive and I didn't find him keen in the first game and I told myself that 3-2 down... I said to myself, 'I need to find a way for to go out there and to battle back now.' And I did find a way and it was very important for me to get myself up again,” Struff said.

It was all Struff from there as the German won nearly 70 per cent (37/55) of his service points for the match.

Struff finished 2019 as the German No. 2 for the first time and at a career-high year-end FedEx ATP Ranking of No. 35. The 6'5” right-hander fell to Aussie Nick Kyrgios in his opening match.
