W czasie sezonu 2018 Stefanos Tsitsipas z utalentowanego tenisisty przemienił się w gracza światowej klasy. W kwietniu dotarł do finału turnieju w Barcelonie, gdzie przegrał z Rafaelem Nadalem. Tsitsipas liczy, że nowy sezon będzie dla niego jeszcze lepszy. Rivalries Of 2018: Thiem vs. Tsitsipas

In 2018, no rivalry was more prevalent than Dominic Thiem vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas. A battle of two of the more potent one-handed backhands in today's game, the attack-minded stars clashed a total of five times, leading all FedEx ATP Head2Head match-ups.

Regardless of where they met - on clay or hard, in Europe or North America, the early rounds or latter stages - Thiem and Tsitsipas raised their levels for this budding rivalry. Starting with a season-opening encounter in Doha and concluding with a critical meeting in Toronto in August, they would clash at all three ATP World Tour levels (250, 500 and Masters 1000), as well as the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros.

Coming into the season, the World No. 8 Austrian had never lost to a teenager at the tour-level, while a 19-year-old Tsitsipas had registered just one win over a Top 10 opponent.

It was a breakthrough campaign for Tsitsipas, as the 20-year-old Greek made great strides en route to Most Improved Player of the Year honours in the ATP Awards presented by Moët & Chandon. And it all started at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. There, he streaked to his second straight ATP World Tour quarter-final as a qualifier, carrying the momentum from a deep run in Antwerp just a few months prior.

Doha

Sitting at No. 91 in the ATP Rankings, Tsitsipas made an immediate statement in Doha, but he would encounter a reality check against a fifth-ranked Thiem. The top seed surged to a 7-5, 6-4 victory, turning in an efficient serving performance behind six of seven break points saved. But despite the loss, Tsitsipas made a strong impression on his counterpart.

“He's already so good at a young age. I think he's going to be for sure a top player in the near future,” Thiem said. “He's playing very well, aggressive with a good service, nice one-handed backhand.”

After taking their first encounter, Thiem would also emerge victorious at the BNP Paribas Open in March. The fireworks flew in an opening-round meeting at the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year. On a packed Court 1 in Indian Wells, the Austrian battled to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win in one hour and 51 minutes.

As he did in Doha, Tsitsipas put up a valiant fight under the searing Southern California sun. His charge towards the year-end Top 20 was well underway and his growth and maturation would benefit from every elite encounter. In search of his first Top 10 win of the season, he would meet Thiem once again just six weeks later at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.



The budding rivalry shifted to clay and the surface change would prove critical for Tsitsipas. The Greek found a second home in the Spanish metropolis, not dropping a set en route to his first ATP World Tour final. After blitzing Corentin Moutet, Diego Schwartzman and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, he would topple Thiem in the quarter-finals.

The rout was on, as Tsitsipas breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win in just 80 minutes. Thiem, who consistently played deep behind the baseline, was unable to secure a third straight win against his new rival. He suffered his first defeat to a teenager at the tour-level.

One day later, Tsitsipas would become the first Greek to reach an ATP World Tour final since Nicholas Kalogeropoulos in 1973, before falling to Rafael Nadal in the championship. His run in Barcelona would see him break into the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings for the first time.

If it seemed like Thiem and Tsitsipas were meeting nearly every month, that's because they were. As the calendar flipped to May, the 25-year-old was finding his top form on the dirt. A runner-up finish at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Zverev) was followed by a 10th tour-level title in Lyon, and he would surge into Roland Garros with a bevy of momentum at his back.

The second Grand Slam of the year would become a revenge tour for Thiem, as he defeated Tsitsipas in the second round and Madrid champ Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. After suffering such a decisive defeat to the Greek teen in Barcelona, he would not endure the same fate in Paris. Thiem prevailed 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, en route to his maiden major final.



At first glance, it may appear to be a straightforward four-set affair, but the two-day encounter carried plenty of drama. Thiem would use his experience to stop the surge after Tsitsipas took the second set. And the Austrian would be forced to take a two-sets-to-one lead to sleep as the match was suspended due to darkness. The next day, Thiem dropped just one service point to close it out. His victory over Tsitsipas was followed by signature wins over Kei Nishikori, Zverev and a surging Marco Cecchinato before falling to Nadal in the title match.

The best tournament of Thiem's career had him on the rise as he entered the summer hard-court season. But his transition from the clay wasn't a swift one, especially with Tsitsipas standing on the other side of the net to open his Rogers Cup campaign.

This time, it was the Greek's turn to defeat his rival en route to a breakthrough week. He ousted Thiem 6-3, 7-6(6) in a Toronto tussle, needing one hour and 21 minutes to triumph. The win would continue Tsitsipas' stunning run to the final, his first at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level. In addition, it was his first of four straight Top 10 victories, having followed that up with wins over Novak Djokovic, Zverev and Kevin Anderson. He became the youngest player to defeat four Top 10 players in a single tournament since the ATP World Tour was established in 1990.

Both players would go on to finish inside the Top 20 of the year-end ATP Rankings, with Thiem peaking at No. 8 after appearing in the Nitto ATP Finals and Tsitsipas at No. 15 following a title at the Next Gen ATP Finals. The #NextGenATP star also raised his maiden ATP World Tour trophy in Stockholm. After five pivotal clashes in 2018, expect the pair to take their new rivalry to the next level in 2019.

Tsitsipas ready to bring style and soul to AO19

Stefanos Tsitsipas will never forget his 20th birthday. This was one epic tennis coming-of-age party.

Tsitsipas faced world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the Toronto final before a pumping crowd that had been captivated by the young Greek as he pulled off the biggest run of upsets in 2018.

Ranked 27th, Tsitsipas had toppled No.8 Dominic Thiem in straight sets, No.10 Novak Djokovic (in his first meeting with the former No.1), No.3 Alexander Zverev (from 6-3 5-2 and two match points down) and No.6 Kevin Anderson (again from match point down), before Nadal stopped him in straight sets.

“Playing in a Masters final is the best thing that can happen on your birthday,” said the waif-like Athenian. “I’m living the dream - literally. I had the best week of my life.”

Toronto was a high point in a year that saw Tsitsipas make all kinds of history.

The youngest player in the top 20, he rose to No.15 - the highest-ranked Greek man ever. In Stockholm in October, he became the first Greek to win an ATP title. In Toronto, he was the youngest Masters finalist since Djokovic in 2007 and the youngest to defeat four top-10 players in a single event in the history of the ATP Tour.

Tsitsipas began the year ranked No.91 and with four tour-level wins to his name. He ended the season with 46 wins, three finals appearances - in Barcelona, Toronto and Stockholm - on three different surfaces, a Grand Slam fourth round at Wimbledon, half a dozen top-10 wins, the Next Gen title after streaking through the Milan field 5-0, and the peer-voted gong for Most Improved Player.

“I had a fantastic year but it was the last thing that was in my head,” Tsitsipas said on collecting his award at the ATP Finals in London. “When I finally saw it [the trophy], I was happy that my name was there. All the hard work, all the effort that I put into my game this year, it’s part of this trophy. So yeah, it feels great.”

It's not just his achievements that are exciting fans - it's also his artistry. A sweeping single-handed backhand is his signature shot, and he likes to use his big and improving serve to venture forward. His is a soulful style on and off the court.

The eldest of four children, Tsitsipas has a creative outlet in his entertaining travel vlog, which he says takes the edge off painful defeats and helps him appreciate “all those beautiful places” on his tennis journey. He’s already planning drone footage of his upcoming first trip to Perth for the Hopman Cup. “This place must be stunning.”

Greece, with its epic landscapes, islands and beaches, is not exactly renowned for producing top tennis players. Although proudly Hellenic - “I bleed blue; Greece is who I am” - Tsitsipas is quick to credit his demanding Russian mother Yulia Salnikova, a former top junior, for his professionalism.

“My mother actually gave me a lot of discipline in my game,” he says. “That’s what I believed helped me a lot: discipline. Which, in Greek culture, is not that common, I would say.”

While his father, Apostolos, was his coach and quit his job to support his son’s tennis, Tsitsipas says his mother helped him deal with distressing defeats as a junior, when “losing felt like the end of the world.” Today he says of his greatest strength: “It takes a lot of mental toughness and mental stability to be able to beat [top] players and perform at my best.

“Staying calm and positive is the most important thing for me.”

Tsitsipas is “pretty good friends” with Greek-Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Mark Philippoussis - “He had some good tips to give me last year.”

He has never met Pete Sampras, the greatest Greek name in the game, but Tsitsipas shares a birthday - August 12th - with the legendary Greek-American. A small omen, perhaps, that we have another history-maker to watch. And Tsitsipas can expect a rockstar reception in multicultural Melbourne, one of the biggest Greek cities outside Greece.

Last January Tsitsipas and fellow young gun Denis Shapovalov enthralled fans in a first-round shoot-out between rising shotmakers. Tsitsipas didn’t win a set but has since overtaken the Canadian and returns to Melbourne Park with a seeding and plenty of expectation of building on his breakout 2018 season.

“Pressure about leading Greece? Never,” he declared in a first-person essay.

“It’s very motivating to be the one who can create history in Greece and have kids look up to me. I can inspire them and be the leader of tennis in Greece.”

#NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas made history at the Intrum Stockholm Open. The 20-year-old, who had reached championship matches in Barcelona and Toronto earlier in the season, defeated qualifier Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-4 to become the first Greek to capture an ATP World Tour title.

Tsitsipas dominated on serve, winning 80 per cent of his service points and saving the only break point he faced. The No. 3 seed dropped the second set of his opening-round match against John Millman, but then won seven consecutive sets to emerge victorious in the Swedish capital.

"Of course I feel happy because I'm the first Greek [to win a title]. Hopefully many Greek players can achieve something like this. I would be super happy to see them achieve something like this in the future," Tsitsipas said. "Representing my country at such high-level tournaments, being the first Greek to crack the Top 100 is very, very special for me.

Greece's #NextGenATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas had enjoyed big wins before the Rogers Cup in August, including when he made the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell final in April. But never before had the right-hander turned in such a week like he did at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Canada.

His best week started by beating No. 8 Dominic Thiem and was followed by his three-set win against Novak Djokovic, who was fresh off his fourth Wimbledon – and 13th Grand Slam – title. Yet the Serbian was broken in the second game of the final set and never recovered, as Tsitsipas moved into his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.

The firsts would only keep coming. Next, Tsitsipas avenged his straight-sets loss to Alexander Zverev at the Citi Open only a week earlier by saving two match points and hitting 28 winners – 18 from his forehand – in their quarter-final. In the semi-finals, Tsitsipas came back from a set down once more, beating Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(7) before falling to No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the final. Tsitsipas would finish the season No. 15 in the ATP Rankings and with the Nitto ATP Finals in mind as a 2019 goal.

Przygotowując się do startu nowych rozgrywek, Tsitsipas trenował w Dubaju z Rogerem Federerem. - Federer jest moim idolem, a zaraz po nim znajduje się Marcos Baghdatis - przyznał. - Zasłużyłem na to, by tu być. Odbijając piłkę z najlepszymi, mogę się uczyć i zdobywać doświadczenie - wyjaśniał.

Choć Puchar Hopmana nie jest oficjalnym turniejem, Tsitsipas podkreślił, że do zawodów podejdzie z pełną powagą. - Nigdy nie wiadomo, co się wydarzy, ale będziemy grać z sercem. Wprawdzie nigdy wcześniej nie występowałem w parze z Marią, lecz ćwiczyliśmy razem. Wygrana byłaby najlepszym możliwym sposobem na rozpoczęcie sezonu - stwierdził.

Greece's #NextGenATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas looked nearly as sharp on Wednesday as he did in November when he captured the Next Gen ATP Finals title in Milan. The 20-year-old dismissed Argentina's Guido Andreozzi at the Sydney International 6-3, 6-4 to earn his first tour-level win of the season.

Tsitsipas broke the 27-year-old three times and held off a late comeback from the Argentine to move into the quarter-finals. The World No. 15 broke through in 2018, reaching finals at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and the Rogers Cup and winning titles at the Intrum Stockholm Open and in Milan. Tsitsipas will next face Italy's Andreas Seppi, who beat Slovakian Martin Klizan 7-6(2), 6-2.

Brisbane International quarter-finalist Alex de Minaur dismissed 21-year-old Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-6(5). The 19-year-old De Minaur withstood 17 aces from the 6'11” American and won 88 per cent of his first-serve points (28/33). The fifth seed will face countryman Jordan Thompson for a place in the semi-finals.

Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah booked their place in the Sydney International semi-finals on Wednesday, beating Matthew Ebden and Robert Lindstedt 6-3, 7-6(1). The top-seeded Colombians dropped only six points behind their first serves (33/39) to advance after 79 minutes.

Cabal and Farah will meet Aussies Lleyton Hewitt and Jordan Thompson or Martin Klizan and Nicholas Monroe for a place in the final. Hewitt and Thompson upset Brisbane International finalists Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 6-1, 6-3 in 56 minutes.

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares moved two wins away from their second Sydney title, saving all three break points they faced to beat Ivan Dodig and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 6-3. Murray and Soares lifted their maiden team title at the tournament in 2016.

The second seeds will face Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski in the semi-finals. The British brothers won 75 per cent of service points (47/63) to defeat Aussies Alex Bolt and Matt Reid 6-4, 7-6(4).
