Isner To Defend Newport Title In 2012

Obrazek
John Isner defeated Olivier Rochus
to win the 2011 Newport title.

No. 3 American John Isner, winner of two ATP World Tour titles this season, including Newport, will return to defend his title at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in 2012. The tournament will be hosted 9-15 July, 2012 on the historic grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Tickets for the tournament go on sale 16 November, 2011 at 10 a.m. - just in time to make great holiday gifts for tennis fans. A pre-sale for members of the International Tennis Hall of Fame will begin on 2 November, 2011, offering special discounts and first access to the best seats. Fans can purchase tickets and learn more about the tournament or Hall of Fame membership by visiting www.tennisfame.com or calling 866-914-FAME (3263).

"Newport was a great week for me this year, and I look forward to playing there again next summer," said Isner. "It's a great tournament, good fans and it's a lot of fun to play in a venue with such an important history as the Hall of Fame."

At the 2011 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Isner defeated Belgian Olivier Rochus in the finals, making it through the entire tournament without dropping a set. The tournament was a turnaround week for Isner. After a slow start to the season, he won Newport and then went on to win the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University in August- his third career singles title.

In between those two tournaments, he was a finalist at Atlanta and a semi-finalist at Washington, D.C. In September, he achieved his best ever Grand Slam result, making it to the quarter-finals at the US Open, before falling to world No. 4 Andy Murray in a very close match. Isner has made great strides in his ranking throughout the season, advancing from No. 46 before Newport to his current position of No. 23 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.

In 2010 Isner captivated tennis fans worldwide when he played an epic record-setting match at Wimbledon versus Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. The match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes and set numerous records, including longest match and most number of aces by a player (Isner- 113 aces). Both Isner and Mahut donated their gear from the match to the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum, where it is now displayed in the Museum's Grand Slam Gallery.

Last year, Isner reached a career-high four finals, capturing his first ATP World Tour singles title at Auckland. He finished in the Top 20 for first time with a personal-high 38 match wins. In addition to his three singles titles, Isner has three career doubles titles, including the Newport doubles title from 2008, which he won with fellow American and 2010 Newport singles champion Mardy Fish.

The Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships immediately follows Wimbledon and it is the only grass court pro tournament in the Americas and the only men's ATP World Tour event in the Northeast. In addition to a week of pro tennis, the tournament features great special events, highlighted by the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Class of 2012 Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, 14 July. Voting is currently underway and nominees for induction include Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerten, Jennifer Capriati and Nick Bollettieri.

Paris Masters 2011: American John Isner Gets Back on Track with Strong Showing

Obrazek

John Isner took some time off following a quarterfinal loss to Andy Murray at the US Open. He returned last month in the Valencia Open only to lose to virtual unknown Vasek Pospisil in his first match, which raised some questions.

Many of those questions should have been answered by his strong bounce-back BNP Paribas Masters performance in Paris.

He reached the semifinals, including wins over Stanislas Wawrinka and David Ferrer, before being eliminated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three close sets. Isner did lose two tiebreaks, which is an area in which he usually excels, but it was an encouraging outing nevertheless.

While the American was pleased with his tournament, he knows there's room to improve (via Associated Press).

You come so close to winning, it gets taken away from you. It wasn't to be," Isner said. "He came up with the goods, hats off to him. That's why he's one of the best players in the world, he came up big."

"I've showed this tournament that I can play with the best players in the world," said Isner, who was hoping to reach his first Masters final. "I just have to be more consistent, improve my backhand."

Isner was aiming to become the first American since Andre Agassi in 1999 to win the tournament.

Even though Isner didn't drop his serve all match, which would seem to bode well for tiebreakers, Tsonga stepped up and had the crowd support to push him over the finish line. Isner, who is best known for his record-breaking match at Wimbledon, can sleep easy knowing he'll still regain a spot inside the top 20.

And even bigger things could be on the horizon.

Isner's game matches up well for next year's first major, the Australian Open. Like he mentioned, he's really only a backhand, and a little more fitness, away from becoming a major hard-court force.

A trip to the quarterfinals is certainly possible, which would make it the second straight major in which he reached that mark, and if the bracket fell his way the semifinals aren't out of the question, either.

His serve is such a major advantage that it's hard to count him out of any match as Rafael Nadal almost learned in the French Open earlier this year when Isner took him to five sets. Winning matches against top-notch talent will only help him build his confidence moving forward.

American tennis fans could use something to be excited about and Isner's performance in Paris could be the beginning of just that.

Isner Commit To 2012 Atlanta Tennis Championships

The Atlanta Tennis Championships announced Monday 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick, 2010-11 ATC finalist John Isner and US Open mixed doubles champion Jack Sock have committed to play in the tournament, which is the opening event of the Olympus US Open Series.Isner, who has signed a multi-year deal, is currently ranked No. 18 in the world, a tie for his career-high ranking. The towering 6’9" player is a former All-American at the University of Georgia and NCAA Division I champion. With a dominating first serve, he captured tournament titles in 2011 at Winston-Salem and Newport, and in Auckland in 2010. He finished second this year with 811 aces to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s 825. “I’m excited about returning to the Atlanta Tennis Championships and playing in front of the enthusiastic tennis fans in Georgia,” Isner said. “I’m also looking forward to playing at Atlantic Station, in the heart of the city, this year and the next several years. The energy and excitement of this unique setting will be fun for all the players.”

Tournament Director Bob Bryant said, “With the addition of Andy, John and Jack, we are far ahead of past years in bringing in top talent at such an early date. Atlanta tennis fans watched Andy win his first title here in 2001 and he’s been a crowd favorite ever since.

“Georgia Bulldog fans are familiar with Isner’s 140-mph-plus serve and powerful forehand and we expect to see even more impressive and thrilling tennis from him for many years to come. Jack burst on the scene by winning his first Grand Slam title at this year’s US Open, playing mixed doubles with Atlanta’s own Melanie Oudin. We’re excited that these great players will be competing in this year’s tournament.”

For more information about the event, please go to the official Atlanta Tennis Championships website here.

Isner Meets NRL Bulldogs

Obrazek
The trio passed a football after showcasing their tennis skills.

Three Bulldogs came together on Friday at the Apia International Sydney when Georgia Bulldogs fan, John Isner, met with captain Mick Ennis and winger Steve Turner of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs National Rugby League team.

On his arrival at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, Isner ran into Nicolas Mahut, with whom he made history when they contested a record three-day first-round match at Wimbledon in 2010. After greeting the Frenchman, Isner made his way to the courts where he hit with Turner and Ennis, the latter nursing a knee injury and stationed at the net, before they switched sports and passed a football.

Afterwards, World No. 18 Isner was presented with a No. 18-emblazoned Bulldogs club jersey, making him an honorary member of the club, as No. 18 is the number that the Bulldogs have dedicated to their members.

"I went to school in the south and that’s where I feel college football is most passionate, just like rugby is down here in Sydney," said Isner. "Going to school in Georgia, the Georgia Bulldogs is sort of a religion down there so I’m a big fan. With the team name being the same it’s pretty neat to meet these guys."

Isner had previously said he believed NFL to be far more physically demanding than rugby league, but when challenged on this statement by Australian journalists, the American quickly backtracked. "Well that’s the big debate," he laughed. "But these guys aren’t padded up like the NFL guys. Both sports are so tough, but the more I think about it, you’ve got to give the edge to rugby. I’ve got a lot of respect for these guys."

The 26-year-old Isner is set to make his main draw debut at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament in Sydney next week. He enjoyed a strong finish to the 2011 season, almost qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with a run to the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris (l. to Tsonga).

Isner Joins Strong American Field In Houston
Two-time US Men’s Clay Court Championship quarterfinalist John Isner is the third American singles player to commit to the 2012 event April 9-15 at River Oaks Country Club.

Isner joins his countrymen Mardy Fish, the No. 8 player in the world and 2006 champion, and Sam Querrey, the 2010 finalist, in the singles field, while the four-time champion Bryan Brothers have committed to defend their doubles title.

“John is a fan favorite here at River Oaks, so we’re very excited that he is coming back for the 2012 tournament,” said tournament director Van Barry. “We’re very lucky that this popular group of American players has embraced the tournament, and their commitment assures us we will have another high quality field.”

This will be the fifth appearance for Isner at River Oaks. The former Georgia Bulldog has had doubles success at River Oaks in addition to his two singles quarterfinals. In 2011, Isner and Querrey teamed up to reach the doubles final against the Bryans.

In his career, Isner has won three career singles titles and reached five other finals. This week he is a career-high No. 17 on the ATP World Tour and enters next week’s Australian Open seeded a personal-best in a Grand Slam No. 16.

Fish joins Isner among the seeds at the Australian Open, as he will be No. 8 when the tournament begins on Monday. Querrey will also be in the field for the year’s first Grand Slam while twins Bob & Mike Bryan will be looking to win a sixth title overall in Australian and their fourth in a row.

On Thursday, 1 December individual session tickets and the very popular “Champ Pass” for the 2012 US Men’s Clay Court Championship will go on sale. The Champ Pass includes a ticket to the Friday, Saturday and Sunday sessions, which are usually sold out before the tournament begins. A limited number of season ticket packages for the 2012 event are still remaining. Information on tickets can be found at www.mensclaycourt.com or by calling 713-874-6294
