Seppi Tops Bellucci For Moscow Crown

Obrazek
Andreas Seppi celebrates lifting his
third ATP World Tour title.

Italian Andreas Seppi clinched his third ATP World Tour title on Sunday at the Kremlin Cup.

The second seed defeated fourth-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in two hours and 13 minutes. It was the first time in the 23-year history of the ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tournament in Moscow that an Italian and Brazilian had reached the final.

"It is very special to win this title as I remember Yevgeny [Kafelnikov] winning so many times here and he was my idol growing up,” said Seppi. "I saw him a few times this week but I was too shy to ask him anything.

"It has been a great season for me, winning titles is so special, now I have won on all surfaces and that means a lot."

Seppi, who also won the Serbia Open 2012 title at Belgrade (d. Paire) in May, received a cheque for $121,500 in prize money and earned 250 South African Airways ATP Ranking points. Bellucci, who lifted the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad trophy (d. Tipsarevic) in July, picked up $64,000 and 150 points.

Seppi is the first Italian to win two ATP World Tour titles in a season since Davide Sanguinetti in 2002 (Milan, Delray Beach). He will be at around No. 22 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings on Monday.

In the pair’s third meeting, the 24-year-old Bellucci broke serve for a 3-1 lead and went onto wrap up the first set in 31 minutes, having hit eight aces and won 21 of his 28 service points. Seppi had lost just five of his 19 points.

Bellucci appeared on course for the title when he broke for a 4-2 lead, but at 4-5 Seppi converted the first of his seven break point opportunities in the match. Bellucci, who beat Seppi in straight sets at 2011 Roland Garros, broke back to 30 only to lose his own serve to love when he served for the title for a second time. In the tie-break, Seppi overcame a mini-break and some big serves from Bellucci to level the score-line.

Seppi lost just 16 of his service points in the deciding set, converting two of six break point opportunities to improve to a 37-25 match record on the season.

"It was tough today to come back from a set and a break down," said Seppi. "He was serving very well at the beginning. I kept trying and that put some pressure on him. He could not close out when he served for the match twice and that gave me confidence. I started to play more relaxed and more aggressive."

Bellucci saved 10 of 14 break points and hit 13 aces in total, but dropped to a 25-20 season mark. He was also looking to become the first left-hander to win the Kremlin Cup title since Goran Ivanisevic (d. Kafelnikov) in 1996.

"I just did not play at the same level as I was before when I served for the match," said Bellucci. "Maybe I got too nervous. It was still a good effort from me this week, my first indoor final, it was a good match and he played well.

"I finished my semi-final at 11 o'clock last night and at 2 a.m. I was still awake. It was not easy to recover but still I almost won in two sets."

Seppi keeps Italian hopes alive

Obrazek

Italian Andreas Seppi advanced to his first Australian Open fourth round appearance with a five-set victory over big-serving Croatian Marin Cilic in five tough sets on Saturday.

The No. 21 seed won 6-7(2) 6-3 2-6 6-4 6-2 in three hours and 38 minutes on Show Court 2.

It is fair to say Italian women have dominated the tennis headlines in recent years. Flavia Pennetta became their first top 10 ranked singles player and also got to No. 1 in the doubles rankings, Francesca Schiavone became the country’s first grand slam champion at the 2010 French Open while Sara Errani, 2012 French Open finalist, and doubles partner Roberta Vinci, the current doubles world No. 1, both had stellar 2012 seasons.

But with Pennetta currently injured and the other three Italian women already eliminated from the 2013 Australian Open singles competition, now is Seppi’s chance to shine.

The 28 year-old, currently ranked 23, is doing just that, equalling his career-best grand slam performance with the victory over Cilic, an Australian Open semi-finalist in 2010.

“It’s the first time I’ve passed the second round here also in Australia, so it is very important for me,” Seppi said.

“One of my goals was to go better in the slams.”

Seppi got the early break in the match and served for the set at 5-4, but was broken. It went to a tiebreak, which Cilic won 7-2, helped by four unforced errors from the Italian.

Cilic’s serve wasn’t firing yet, only making 38 per cent of his first serves, but he was on top in the baseline rallies. He broke in the opening game of the second set, only for Seppi to immediately break back and win the next four games to race to a 4-1 lead.

This time Seppi did not let his lead slip, serving it out 6-3 in 34 minutes.

Cilic turned his form around in the third set, hitting10 winners and just four unforced errors to take it 6-2 in 37 minutes.

The Italian was not giving up without a fight, breaking Cilic in the first game of the fourth set. He surrendered the advantage in the next game though, with Cilic breaking straight back.

Games continued on serve until the ninth game, when Seppi snared the pivotal break. He served out the set to love in the next game, taking it 6-4 in 49 minutes.

Seppi hit 12 winners to seven for the set, as Cilic’s unforced error count for the set jumped to 12.

It was Cilic who struck first in the final set, breaking Seppi’s first service game to snare a 2-0 lead. Seppi responded by reeling off six straight games to win the match, taking the set 6-2 in 39 minutes.

Seppi now faces unseeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who is also into his first Australian Open fourth round, for a quarter-final berth. Chardy upset No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro in five sets in the third round.

Andreas w TOP-20.

Andreas Seppi: New Trainer, New Perspective

Obrazek
Seppi broke into the Top 20 after his fourth-round showing in Melbourne this year.

Andreas Seppi has been playing tennis professionally for 11 years, but at 29, the World No. 18 is enjoying the best stretch of his career right now.

In 2011, he captured his first ATP World Tour title in Eastbourne and went a step further in 2012, winning two more trophies and reaching the round of 16 at a Grand Slam event for the first time at Roland Garros. There, he pushed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to five sets to affirm his status as a serious threat to his opponents.

At the start of this season, Seppi reached the fourth round of the Australian Open to crack the Top 20, the first Italian to do so since Renzo Furlan on 22 April 1996. As part of Compeed's Form & Fitness series, Seppi discusses his change in trainers, increase in confidence and more...

You changed trainers this past season. Talk about what went into that decision and the impact you’ve seen thus far through the first three months of the season…

I think it was a good change for me to see something different and work on different things. I think I’ve learned that in the past, I did too much with weights and work on strength. So we’ve changed that and worked more on balance and flexibility for my shoulders, to open them up more, because I was always pretty locked there. I’ve felt more comfortable on the court and have seen positive results.

In two of your past four Grand Slam events, you won back-to-back five-set matches. To what do you attribute to your ability to come through these close contests the past 12 months?

I didn’t play very well in the majors before. I think with the work I’ve done the past two winters, I feel much more confident on the court. I feel I have more energy and don’t get tired fast. That’s why I’ve felt comfortable in these five-set matches.

You broke into the Top 20 for the first time in January. How important was it for you to attain this milestone?

It was always one of the goals for my career. That’s why I was working hard every day as it was a big achievement for me to get there. But I don’t want to stop here. I hope I can improve even more and reach higher goals. We’ll see how far it can go.

Athletes are always looking to get better. Is there anything you’re looking to improve in 2013 or have you targeted any new ranking goals?

I don’t have a ranking in mind to reach. I’m looking to stay fit and healthy. I would like to win another title this year. I just have to keep trying my best.

What is an exercise or stretch you’d recommend a recreational player add into their training programme?

What I always do before I play is warm up my shoulders and arms with the elastic bands. I think this is a good thing to do before a match.

Which player on tour do you think…
Has the strongest core? David Ferrer
Has the best footwork? Roger Federer
Has the greatest muscular endurance? Rafael Nadal
Is the most flexible? Novak Djokovic or Gael Monfils
Is the quickest? Bjorn Phau
Has the best balance? Roger Federer
