Djokovic, Edmund play later today

Eighth-seeded Belgian David Goffin recorded his fourth win in five FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-3 in 83 minutes on Wednesday at the Mutua Madrid Open. Goffin led 3-1 in the first set, which included five breaks of serve. On Tuesday, Haase earned the 200th match win of his career with victory over South Korea’s Hyeon Chung.

Goffin awaits the winner of two-time former champion and Serbian No. 10 seed Novak Djokovic or Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund. Goffin trails Djokovic 1-5 in their series, but he did win their last match in April 2017 at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. The Belgian won his lone meeting against Edmund in the 2015 Davis Cup final.

Carreno Busta gets back on track with tough three-set win
The last time Belgian David Goffin and Argentine Leonardo Mayer met in Rome, two years ago, the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up barely squeaked by, coming within two points of defeat and needing to escape an epic 18-point second-set tie-break before pulling away in a decider.

The World No. 10 faced no such issues against Mayer on Monday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, ousting the 30-year-old 6-1, 6-2 in 62 minutes. It is the 60th tour-level clay-court win of Goffin’s career, and the fourth time in as many appearances that he has gotten through his first-round match at the Foro Italico.

Goffin has enjoyed success in Italy over the past three years, advancing to at least the Round of 16 each time. Each of the No. 9 seed's losses in the Italian capital have come against an opponent inside the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings, and he now owns an 8-3 record at the event. Goffin next plays Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas or Italian wild card Marco Cecchinato.

Another Top 10 seed got through on the red clay, but did so in a much tighter battle. No. 10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta overcame a tough test to defeat American Jared Donaldson 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in one hour, 40 minutes.

That victory ends a two-match losing streak for the Spaniard, who has not moved past the second round in Rome in two main draw appearances. Carreno Busta will look to do so when he faces American Steve Johnson, who beat Stan Wawrinka on Monday. While the pair’s FedEx ATP Head2Head series is knotted at 1-1, Carreno Busta defeated Johnson in straight sets earlier this year at Miami.

Belgian will meet Del Potro or Tsitsipas in third round
David Goffin needed three sets to beat Italy’s Marco Cecchinato 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Tuesday.

Goffin dropped six consecutive games from 5-1 in the opening set to trail the Gazprom Hungarian Open champion (d. Millman), but recovered well, winning 12 of the next 14 games to advance after two hours and four minutes. The World No. 10 improves both his record in the Italian capital, and his record on clay this season, to 8-3.

In front of a packed crowd on Court Pietrangeli, Goffin began the match in top form. The 27-year-old broke in the first game with a successful foray into the net and appeared to be cruising as he attempted to convert set point at 5-2 (40/30), but Cecchinato raced back into contention, winning six consecutive games to take a surprise one-set lead.

Goffin quickly halted the 25-year-old's momentum in the second set with two early service breaks before forcing a deciding set with a love service hold. The Belgian grew in confidence on serve in the third set, winning 16 of 17 service points to race to the finish line, clinching victory with a crosscourt forehand winner on his second match point.

Goffin will meet BNP Paribas Open champion Juan Martin del Potro or #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas for a place in the quarter-finals. Tsitsipas was leading his first-round match against Borna Coric 4-1 before the Croatian retired due to a neck injury.


Thiem, Zverev Meet Again
Two days after facing off in the Mutua Madrid Open singles final, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem renewed their rivalry on the doubles court in Rome. And, this time, it was Thiem who emerged victorious.

Thiem and partner Steve Johnson battled from a set down to defeat Zverev and older brother Mischa Zverev 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-7 to advance to the second round after 89 minutes.

The Austrian-American tandem won 76 per cent of first-serve points and broke serve on three of their five break-point opportunities to confirm a second-round meeting against second seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic.

Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer needed three sets to defeat home favourites Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli 6-4, 1-6, 11-9. Fognini and Bolelli dropped five points on serve in a dominant second set to force a Match Tie-break, but it was Del Potro and Mayer who held their nerve to move into the next round.

The Argentines will face Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell champions Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez in the Round of 16.

Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer took 66 minutes to beat Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 6-4. The Dutch duo saved the only break point they faced and converted two of their three break chances to book a second-round clash with sixth-seeded Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.

David Goffin first burst to prominence in 2012 when, as a lucky loser ranked No.109, he surged into the fourth round at Roland-Garros and pushed Roger Federer in a compellling four-set loss.

It was a campaign that began the Belgian’s affinity with the clay-court Grand Slam, and put him on the path to eventually cracking the world’s top 10.

Roland caught up Goffin in Monte-Carlo, where he now resides, and took a trip down memory lane, recalling his lack of confidence as a teenager which ultimately gave way to the belief that he could make it as one of the world’s very best players.

“I didn’t believe in myself enough: when you’re young and you barely reach your opponent’s shoulder, you tell yourself you just don’t have what it takes to keep up,” he admitted.

“I had to find alternative solutions, think more. I kept these qualities, and with more striking power (following a growth spurt at age 16) I quickly caught up to the others.”

The Belgian has since gone on to win four ATP titles, reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2016 – his best-performed major tournament – and peak at world No.7 in November 2017.

Currently ranked ninth, Goffin arrives at Roland-Garros this year having won nine of his 13 clay-court matches.

He is no towering giant, but David Goffin knows his game stacks up against the best in Paris.

Whether scuttling around manically on the Parisian clay as a man or watching wide-eyed from the Philippe-Chatrier stands as a boy, David Goffin, now a welcome fixture among the world’s top 10 players, swears that the influence of Roland-Garros on his blossoming career has been all-embracing.

The Belgian, while laughing that at 5ft 11in he is not exactly the tiniest in a tennis world populated by giants, admits that he is still delighted to have become an inspiration to other “little guys” in the sport as his athletic game has transported him to the verge of the major prizes.



And though the 27-year-old’s rise has been rudely interrupted over this past year by a couple of freakish injuries, the world No.9 will be delighted to return to the courts where his schoolboy dreams have been realised down the years.

“It is really special for us as Belgians to play here,” explained Goffin in an interview with rolandgarros.com. “There’s always a lot of support, it’s only an hour-and-a-half from the French border, and I remember coming here twice with my parents and my brother when I was small.”

His most striking memory was as a seven-year old in 1998 making the four-hour drive from his hometown of Rocourt on the outskirts of Liege with his family to follow the fortunes of Belgium’s big hope of the day, Filip Dewulf, who had been semi-finalist the year before, in the fourth round.

“I remember it so clearly,” smiled Goffin. “It’s a big memory for me, this first time I came here and Filip beat (Spain’s Francisco) Clavet and I was just so impressed by the level he played. It was inspirational for me.”



Years later, he was the one inspiring a new generation of Belgians as he recalled the 2012 edition as his first taste of tennis’s big-time. “It was my first Slam here and I went out in the qualifying only to be given another chance as a lucky loser,” he recalled.

And how he took advantage of that stroke of luck, beating Radek Stepanek and Arnaud Clement in five-setters and even giving Roger Federer a momentary scare by taking the first set off the great man in the fourth round.

“When I came back from here to Belgium, it was a big change. I came back to my city and suddenly I was walking a little bit with my girlfriend in the street and it was completely different as people started to recognise me in the street.

“It was not easy because all of a sudden after that there was a lot of expectations from everybody, from the fans, the media, and it was not easy to manage. But it was an important experience and I’ve since learned how to manage that side of things with a lot of experience on the tour.”

In 2016, Goffin went one better by reaching the quarter-finals and he looked to be on course for another stirring run last year until he suffered the most unfortunate of accidents in the third round, injuring his right ankle when he tripped on a tarpaulin by the side of the court while in control of his match with Horacio Zeballos.

It wiped out his grass-court season and he had to fight back to full fitness before ending his individual 2017 campaign spectacularly by beating both Rafa Nadal and Federer en route to finishing runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov in the end-of-season ATP Finals.

He suffered another blow in February when struck in the left eye by a ball which ricocheted off his racquet frame, an injury which disrupted his Spring campaign, but reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona and the quarters in Rome suggested some of his best clay-court form could be on its way at Roland-Garros.

Certainly, these days, he is a different figure to that nervy 2012 novice. “I now manage the job better. I’m more relaxed, I don’t spend too much energy and I’m not so nervous any more. It’s not easy but I try to stay calm in every situation. For me, its the best way even if sometimes when I try to stay calm, inside I’m not calm.”

Goffin remains one of the tour’s nice guys. Indeed, he conceded last summer that those who think he’s perhaps too nice may have a point.

“I have people around me who tell me ‘just say what you have to say and want to say’ but sometimes I am too nice, I don’t want to hurt anyone in my team or my family.

“So, yes, I have to be more ruthless than I used to be. When you are a tennis player, in the top 10, you have a lot of people around you and you are like the boss of your own company.

“You have some tough moments, and happy moments of course with your friends and team - but sometimes you have to take the tough decisions when you are the boss.”

On the idea that weighing in at 68 kilos and 1.80 metres, he is leading the way for smaller guys on the tour, he says: “That’s fine. I’m happy to have that kind of body too.

“I have a different style of game and maybe that’s why people love to watch me play, because when I’m playing against a player like, say, Raonic, Cilic or Isner, it’s a completely opposite style of game.

“I try to find some solutions to the power, trying to make them run a lot but I’m not that small at 1.80m even if there a lot of big guys at 1.90m and bigger, but I do have different weapons in my bag.”

And does he have a Grand Slam in him? “Why not? I’m 27, I’ve got a lot of good years ahead, hopefully my best so you never know. You might have a week when you feel unbelievable. Cilic did it, Wawrinka has done three times. Raonic and Nishikori made a final as well.

“I’ll keep working for it and if one day I can make it, it would be unbelievable.” And knowing the big little man’s record, wouldn’t it be fitting if it happened at Roland-Garros?

Po sześciu latach od tamtych chwil Goffin jest rozpoznawalny nie tylko w ojczyźnie, ale i wśród ogromnej części miłośników tenisa. - Kiedy jesteś tenisistą z pierwszej "10" rankingu, jesteś też w pewnym sensie szefem swojej firmy. No. 32 seed Monfils defeats countryman Benchetrit in four sets
Roland Garros has been the site of many memories for 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin. Some, like his first Grand Slam quarter-final in 2016, are great. Others, like being forced to retire due to a fluke accident — he got his foot stuck in a tarpaulin cover — last year in the third round, are not as great. When he trailed two sets to none against Robin Haase on Sunday evening, it appeared the No. 8 seed's tournament was heading toward the latter category.

But Goffin battled back to oust the Dutchman, beating Haase 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the second round for the fourth consecutive year. The 27-year-old won 17 of the match's final 18 points to set a meeting against #NextGenATP Frenchman Corentin Moutet, who defeated Ivo Karlovic for the second time in as many FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, 7-6(7), 6-2, 7-6(5), for his first Grand Slam victory.

Gael Monfils recovered from a slow start to begin his 12th campaign at Roland Garros, defeating countryman Elliot Benchetrit 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

"The first round at Roland Garros is never easy," said Monfils. "But when you're playing against a young player, I always look at things in a different way, because he's never played a best-of-five sets match and never played that kind of a match."

The 2008 semi-finalist (l. to Federer) looked to be in trouble, losing the opening four games of the match before dropping the first set, but raced back in emphatic fashion to book his place in the second round. Monfils broke serve on nine occasions and won 87 per cent of net points (7/8) en route to victory.

"From the moment when I felt better physically, I knew I was going to get him to really play," said Monfils. "I was going to make it harder for him, and this is what put me back in the match."

Monfils had lost three of his four matches on European clay this season heading into the first-round encounter. But this year's Doha champion showed signs of his best tennis in front of a packed crowd on Court Suzanne-Lenglen to book his place in the second round.

"I think I did everything I could," said Benchetrit. "I was ready to fight for each point. I know that the first set was a good set. The next ones weren't as good, because Gael was stronger afterwards."

The No. 32 seed Monfils will meet Slovakia’s Martin Klizan for a spot in the Round of 32. Monfils is tied at 1-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series with the left-hander, who defeated Serbia's Laslo Djere 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1.

"It's a good performance, and I'm happy I won in that first round [match]," said Moutet. "But... I worked throughout the year to be able to be there in those moments and to be present. So it's a bit of a reward for my work. But obviously I beat a player who was better ranked, and it's gratifying."

No. 10 seed Carreno Busta through in four sets
At 2-5 down in the first set, many fans on Court Suzanne Lenglen could be forgiven for thinking that David Goffin was in for a second titanic battle in as many rounds at Roland Garros.

But the Belgian had other ideas, reeling off 15 consecutive games to turn the tables on French wild card Corentin Moutet, before securing his place in the third round, for the fourth consecutive year, with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Goffin, who recovered from two sets to love down to beat Robin Haase in the first round, broke serve on eight occasions and hit 33 winners in the two-hour, four-minute contest. The 2016 quarter-finalist has now recorded 13 victories at Roland Garros, tying Xavier Malisse in third place on the all-time list for most match wins by a Belgian man at the event.

The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell semi-finalist will face either Martin Klizan or France's Gael Monfils for a place in the last 16. Goffin has never met Klizan at tour-level, but owns a 2-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head series lead over Monfils.

The No. 10 seed will meet Gazprom Hungarian Open champion Marco Cecchinato for a spot in the Round of 16. The Italian won 54 per cent of return points to beat lucky loser Marco Trungelliti 6-1, 7-6(1), 6-1.

Khachanov to meet Zverev for quarter-final spot
David Goffin saved four match points to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros for the third time on Saturday, defeating home favourite Gael Monfils 6-7(6), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The World No. 9 led by a break at 3-2 in the third set before the match was suspended on Friday, but looked in real danger of elimination as Monfils took charge upon the resumption of play.
The Frenchman served for the match at 5-4 in the fourth set but Goffin, as he did in the first round, held his nerve to battle back. The Nitto ATP Finals runner-up saved four match points in a marathon 10th game to level the scores at 5-5, before forcing a decider and sealing the victory after just under four hours.
"[During the] four match points I was just focused on what I had to do," said Goffin. "I just had to control the point and to be aggressive, because I knew if I gave him only one opportunity to take the point, he will take it with his forehand. So I had to be really aggressive, and that's what I did."
Goffin hit 54 winners en route to a milestone victory which saw him take sole ownership of third place for most matches won by a Belgian man at Roland Garros, moving ahead of Xavier Malisse, with 14 wins.
"I came back to the court today very well. I was able to impose my game, my tactics. And David played very well," said Monfils. "He was able to fight back at the decisive moment... Congratulations to him. It's really fantastic what he did, and that's really the token of a champion."
Standing between Goffin and a place in the quarter-finals is Italy's Marco Cecchinato. The Italian has enjoyed a breakthrough European clay season, having won his first ATP World Tour title at the Gazprom Hungarian Open in April.
"[Cecchinato] is a great player. He's improving. He won a lot of matches. He won his first title in Budapest... He has nothing to lose," said Goffin.
In other action, Karen Khachanov needed just seven games to complete his third-round match, defeating France's Lucas Pouille 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.
Khachanov, who led Pouille 6-3, 7-5, 1-1 before play was suspended on Friday, returned to Court Philippe Chatrier in similar form, winning five of seven games to clinch his second win in three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against the Frenchman. Khachanov has now beaten Pouille twice on home soil this year, having also triumphed in the Open 13 Provence final to win his second ATP World Tour title.
"The match went really well on my side from the beginning until the end," said Khachanov. "The match was suspended yesterday, so it was not easy to come back again and win this set... I'm just happy that it went perfectly all the way through from the beginning until the end."
Khachanov hit 32 winners and won 73 per cent of net points (17/23) against the Open Sud de France champion to secure his place in the Round of 16 for the second straight year, after two hours and 24 minutes.
The 22-year-old will meet No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16 with both men bidding to reach their maiden Grand Slam quarter-final. Zverev leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 1-0, having beaten Khachanov on home soil at the 2016 St. Petersburg Open.
"We know each other pretty well from juniors... [Zverev] is a tough opponent, but we are in the fourth round. Only the best players are still in the tournament, so hopefully it can be a good match," said Khachanov.

Milos Raonić przez 15 dni przygotował się do występu w turnieju ATP Masters 1000 w Toronto. Po inauguracyjnym pojedynku można stwierdzić, że znakomicie przepracował ten czas. W poniedziałek, w meczu I rundy przeciw Davidowi Goffinowi, Kanadyjczyk pokazał się ze świetnej strony. Dominował na korcie od pierwszej do ostatniej piłki i bardzo pewnie pokonał Belga 6:3, 6:4.
Raonić, finalista Rogers Cup z sezonu 2013, imponował grą przy serwisie. W ciągu 72 minut pojedynku zaserwował 13 asów, po trafionym pierwszym podaniu nie stracił ani jednego punktu oraz ani razu nie został przełamany.

- Jak na pierwszy mecz, był to mój bardzo dobry występ, ale nie uważam, że serwowałem szczególnie dobrze. Stać mnie, by w tym aspekcie spisywać się znacznie lepiej - ocenił Kanadyjczyk, który zapisał na swoim koncie także 31 zagrań kończących i dwa przełamania.

W drugim meczu sesji nocnej pierwszego dnia imprezy miejscowa publiczność już nie miała powodów do zadowolenia. Ich reprezentant, Vasek Pospisil, przegrał 4:6, 3:6 z Borną Coriciem. Chorwat (sześć asów, trzy przełamania i 15 uderzeń wygrywających) w II rundzie zmierzy się ze swoim rodakiem, Marinem Ciliciem, turniejową "piątką".

Jack Sock przegrał siódmy mecz z rzędu. W przerwanym na ponad trzy godziny z powodu opadów deszczu spotkaniu z Daniłem Miedwiediewem, rozstawiony z numerem 13. Amerykanin uległ Rosjaninowi 3:6, 6:3, 3:6. 22-latek z Moskwy zanotował dziesięć asów, trzy przełamania oraz 22 uderzenia wygrywające.

Chung notches maiden Cincinnati victory in three sets
David Goffin recorded his 10th hard-court victory of the season on Tuesday, beating Rogers Cup finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 6-3 at the Western & Southern Open.

Having lost five of his past seven tour-level matches, including a quarter-final defeat to Tsitsipas at the Citi Open, Goffin posted a much-needed win after 86 minutes. The Nitto ATP Finals runner-up hit 21 winners and saved seven of eight break points to level his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against the #NextGenATP Greek at 2-2.

Goffin was forced to save three consecutive set points at 4-5 (0/40) before closing out the set, on his fourth set point, two games later. After trading breaks early in the second set, the World No. 11 finished strongly, winning four consecutive games from 2-3 to book his place in the second round.

Tsitsipas, who also reached the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell final in April, drops to 30-20 at tour-level this year. The World No. 15 defeated four Top 10 opponents in consecutive matches at the Rogers Cup last week, before falling to Rafael Nadal in the championship match.

Goffin will meet Frenchman Benoit Paire for a third-round spot. Paire defeated David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2 on Monday.

Hyeon Chung recorded his maiden victory in Cincinnati, extending Jack Sock's disappointing run of form with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. After losing on his debut in 2017, reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Chung recovered from a set down to beat the American in their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting after one hour and 54 minutes. The South Korean won 70 per cent of first-serve points and 20 of 29 second-serve return points to advance.

Chung, who owns a 23-11 record at tour-level this season, handed Sock his eighth consecutive loss at tour-level. Although Sock's last tour-level singles victory came at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on 13 May (d. Ferrer), the American has still enjoyed considerable success in doubles this season, winning four tour-level crowns across three surfaces.

Chung will meet Juan Martin del Potro in the second round. The Argentine rose to a career-high No. 3 in the ATP Rankings on Monday.


Rogers Cup semi-finalist Karen Khachanov recovered from a set down to beat Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old Russian will meet American Sam Querrey in the second round.

Robin Haase also rallied from a set down to book his place in the second round, defeating Filip Krajinovic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Rogers Cup quarter-finalist fired 11 aces and converted six of 12 break points en route to victory.

Marius Copil recorded a shock win, beating German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2 in 70 minutes. The Diema Xtra Sofia Open finalist will face seventh-seeded Marin Cilic in the second round.
