Carlos Alcaraz's loss to Grigor Dimitrov Thursday evening at the Miami Open presented by Itau can lead to a double whammy on Sunday for the Spaniard.
If Jannik Sinner wins the tournament, he will pass Alcaraz in the PIF ATP Rankings and climb to a career-high World No. 2 next Monday. Anything less, Alcaraz will remain No. 2 and Sinner No. 3.
The Italian has already set the mark for highest-ranked player from his country in PIF ATP Rankings history. Now the 22-year-old is two victories from breaking his own record.

Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev in the Miami semi-finals, a rematch of last year's final at Hard Rock Stadium. In the pair's most recent Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting, Sinner rallied from two sets down to defeat Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

Dimitrov also has an opportunity to make a big move. The Bulgarian will return to the Top 10 for the first time since 2018 if he eliminates Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. By reaching the championship match, Dimitrov would soar to No. 9, also passing Hubert Hurkacz. A title would propel him to World No. 7.
Medvedev and Zverev are locked into their current positions. Defending champion Medvedev will depart Florida as World No. 4 and Zverev will remain World No. 5.

Jannik Sinner is often in control on the tennis court. But Monday, the Italian superstar was brought back to a beginner’s course at the Miami Open presented by Itau.
The 22-year-old tried wheelchair tennis with a player who has reached World No. 1 in singles and doubles in the sport, Alfie Hewett. The Miami Open Wheelchair Invitational is taking place this week on the campus of Hard Rock Stadium.
“It's just amazing to see how how these guys play this sport,” Sinner said. “It's completely different, you are sitting in a chair and the movement is so important. We saw it now and I was struggling so much, but it's just amazing.”
After Sinner met Hewett, they enjoyed a conversation and Sinner got in a wheelchair. Hewett gave the No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings a brief introduction into moving in the chair and then the pair began rallying.
Sinner, who had a wide smile throughout the session, had a great time trying to improve and coordinate his movement with his strokes.
Hewett joined the Italian on his side of the court to show the reigning Australian Open champion his game, with coach Darren Cahill feeding the Briton balls. According to Sinner, movement in wheelchair tennis is key.
“It's also the most important part. If you cannot get the right distance from the chair and the ball and everything, you just can't play,” Sinner said. “So the movement is really tough. You have to get used to it. In the beginning, I was really stuck... It's really tough, so for me it was a big pleasure to at least try it once. It also shows how difficult this sport is and they make it look so easy.”

The Miami crowd watched closely and showed great respect to Hewett and wheelchair tennis.
“It's raising that awareness for wheelchair players and the sport,” Hewett said. “We've been on the Tour for many years now and these last five to 10 years, it's picking up a lot of momentum and we've being integrated more and more and it's little opportunities like this which can can go a long way.
“Obviously Jannik is a well-established player now on the tour and has a massive fan base and even just the the people in the crowd here, they'll walk away from this appreciating the skill and the sort of requirements of how wheelchair tennis is.”
Second seed awaits Zverev or Dimitrov

Jannik Sinner is aiming for his second ATP Masters 1000 crown.

Jannik Sinner produced a sizzling semi-final performance Friday when he flew past Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour, nine minutes at the Miami Open presented by Itau.
The 22-year-old is now one win away from his third title of the season, which would send him to a career-high No. 2 in Monday's PIF ATP Rankings.
“I felt great on court today. Usually the more you go on in a tournament, the more comfortable I feel,” Sinner said. “I’m very happy with this performance.”

A clean-hitting Sinner displayed why he has been the player to beat on the ATP Tour this year. Boasting a season-leading 21-1 match record, the second seed flew out of the blocks, jumping to a 5-0 advantage as he crushed the ball and kept Medvedev guessing if he should play offence or defence.
Medvedev started the match inside Hard Rock Stadium by returning close to the baseline, a contrast to his trademark position close to the back wall. He eventually reverted to a deep stance, but was unable to convert any of his three back chances across the afternoon.
Sinner’s momentum never ceased as he won 10 consecutive points spanning from late in the first set into the second set, during which he broke Medvedev at love in the opening game. Sinner routinely placed the ball on a dime and frustrated the World No. 4 with his brick-wall consistency, committing just 12 unforced errors to Medvedev's 22.
“He made a lot of mistakes, which he usually doesn’t make," Sinner said of Medvedev, who committed just four unforced errors in the first set of his quarter-final against Nicolas Jarry. "I just took the chance. I was expecting a really tough match. If he breaks me in the first set or in the second set, it’s already very different.”
Sinner has remarkably reversed the trend in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Medvedev, who 12 months ago ousted the Italian in the Miami final to improve to 6-0 against the World No 3. Though Medvedev still holds a 6-5 advantage, the 12-time tour-level titlist has claimed five consecutive victories, including at the Australian Open, where he roared back from two-sets-to-love down to win his first major trophy.
Holding the top spot in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, Sinner showed patience in backhand-to-backhand exchanges, not forcing the ball down-the-line prematurely, as he was guilty of in the first two sets of their clash at Melbourne Park.
Into the Miami final for a third time (2021, 2023), Sinner will aim for his second ATP Masters 1000 crown (2023 Toronto) against fourth seed Alexander Zverev or 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov. Sinner, who will play in his fourth ATP Masters 1000 title match Sunday, is the youngest player to reach three Miami finals in tournament history.
The 28-year-old Medvedev, now 18-4 on the season, was aiming to successfully defend a title for the first time.
