Zverev completes opening Munich win after hail delay

Come hail or rain water, Alexander Zverev could not be stopped on Wednesday at the BMW Open. Despite multiple weather delays, the German booked his place in the Munich quarter-finals with a memorable 7-6(3), 6-2 win against Jurij Rodionov.

"Munich is always special," the two-time champion said post-match. "We had a little bit of hail, we had snow, we had rain. We had some good tennis, we had some bad tennis, so everything was there."

Zverev closed out the opening set after a stoppage at 5-4, having saved four early break points, then cruised through the second behind a five-game surge that opened a 5-1 lead. The victory against Austria's Rodionov extended Zverev's winning streak against players outside the Top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings to 12 matches.

Making his 10th Munich appearance, the Hamburg native stopped a run of two consecutive opening defeats at the ATP 250 with a patient victory in heavy conditions.

"I'm happy to be through to the quarter-finals, first time in a few years," said Zverev, who is now 7-3 in his Munich openers. "Normally I come here and I visit Munich for one day and then I leave again, so it's nice that I'm actually staying here."

He will next meet Alex Michelsen or Cristian Garin, whose match was postponed to Thursday due to the weather. Third seed Taylor Fritz's opener against Alejandro Moro Canas was also pushed back, with the winner to face Jack Draper.


Draper joined Zverev as the only other Wednesday winner, with the sixth seed knocking off German wild card Rudolf Molleker 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Two-time Madrid champion Alexander Zverev continued his standout record at the ATP Masters 1000 event, defeating Croatian Borna Coric 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round.

The German was dominant on serve throughout the 88-minute clash, not facing a break point to improve to 4-3 in the pair's Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

"I played quite well today," Zverev said. "I feel well. With him it can always goes both ways. He is extremely dangerous and a tough competitor. Historically someone I don't like playing. But I am happy today, winning in straight sets and happy to be in the next round."

Zverev holds a 22-4 tournament record, having lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2021. The fifth seed has never lost before the fourth round in the Spanish capital and will hope to continue that record against Denis Shapovalov in the third round. The Canadian Shapovalov beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-3.

Alexander Zverev closed Sunday's play with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Denis Shapovalov, extending his Lexus ATP Head2Head advantage to 6-3 against the Canadian. Shapovalov mixed up his play early on with a heavy dose of drop shots, but the big-hitting Zverev converted on his fifth break point of the opening set to take control on Court Manolo Santana.

"Here I'm extremely far back on the return, this is a clay court, especially with altitude. This is where I feel the most comfortable," said the two-time Madrid champion. "In the beginning he did play a lot of drop shots. I don't think he was as successful as he would have hoped maybe, so he stopped doing that in the second set and started hitting the ball much cleaner. It got difficult in the end but I'm happy to be through."

The German did not face a break point until he was broken in his attempt to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set, with Shapovalov chasing down a net cord and conjuring a brilliant drop shot to level the set. After re-establishing his advantage with a break to love, Zverev fought off another break point in the final game of the match before advancing to the Madrid last 16 for the seventh time in seven appearances.

The No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings is now 17-0 against lefties since Roland Garros last season — a success rate Zverev attributed to his growing up playing with lefty brother Mischa Zverev. Shapovalov was bidding to reach the last 16 at an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time since Cincinnati in 2022.
