Before Felix Auger-Aliassime hits the court Monday for the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC, the Canadian made a difference in the local community in Acapulco.

The 23-year-old volunteered with Association Construyendo to help rebuild a home in the Miramar neighbourhood that was destroyed in Hurricane Otis.

“I think it’s a great initiative from the organisation, from the tournament, to get players like myself involved, the community involved,” Auger-Aliassime said. “I think it sends a very positive message after the disaster that happened a couple months back, so hopefully I come back next year and see [Julio’s] beautiful home rebuilt.”

The house belonged to Julio Zamora, who had been living there for 30 years when the storm changed his life. Fans can contribute to the cause by donating to assist Association Construyendoto build more houses.

“That night of the hurricane a pine tree fell on my house,” Zamora said. “Now with this reconstruction I feel happy and very excited that they are supporting us.”


Auger-Aliassime is not the only player doing his part for the community in Acapulco. Stefanos Tsitsipas announced he will donate $1,000 for every ace he hits during the ATP 500 event.

“I will be donating $1,000 for every ace I hit this week in Acapulco,” Tsitsipas said. “It’s going to be transferred to the relief programmes for Acapulco in 2024.”

Tsitsipas, eyeing Top 10 return, beats Safiullin in Acapulco opener

Stefanos Tsitsipas, runner-up at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in 2021, avoided the first-round fate of of former finalists Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul by advancing on Tuesday at the Acapulco ATP 500.

The Greek extended his winning streak against players outside the Top 20 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings to 11 with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Roman Safiullin. It was Tsitsipas' first Lexus ATP Head2Head win against the World No. 39, following a straight-sets defeat in Marseille in 2022.

"It's one of those first rounds that you get good opponents and a very good, strong start from the beginning of the tournament," Tsitsipas said in his interview on centre court. "I knew that dealing with Roman, he's someone that can play good on these kinds of surfaces. He takes the ball early, pushes you back. That was the main thing I had to deal with today, which I did pretty well."

The World No. 12 has moved up two places to No. 10 this week in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings and can secure his place in the Top 10 of Monday's Pepperstone ATP Rankings by reaching the semi-finals.

After pledging to donate $1,000 USD per ace this week to the hurricane relief program in Acapulco, Tsitsipas hit five aces in his opening win and saved the lone break point he faced late in the opening set.

Mid-set breaks in both sets made for a relatively stress-free outing for the Greek, who advanced to the semi-finals (2022) and final (2021) in his previous two Acapulco appearances.

Tsitsipas' next opponent will be Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli, who beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

The Australian, who is No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings, will next play fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who ousted Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 7-6(6).

The 10-time ATP Tour titlist served for the match at 5-4 in the second set but was unable to convert. Tsitsipas also trailed 5/2 in the ensuing tie-break, but remained calm under pressure to emerge victorious in straight sets.

"It's not an easy mountain to climb being 5/2 down and having your opponent serve twice," Tsitsipas said. "It's quite an incredible comeback to be honest in this part of the match, especially when the momentum shifts and changes so quick after serving for the match.

"It's something that you do not expect and there's definitely a lot of doubt creeping through your mind. I think at this particular moment I was just able to compose myself really well and I refused to go to a third set, which was very important."

The Greek saved two of the three break points he faced to advance to his second quarter-final of the season. He reached the semi-finals last week in Los Cabos.

Stefanos Tsitsipas did not face a break point in his 6-3, 6-2 win over Frenchman Lucas Pouille. In the third round the 11th-seeded Greek will play Frances Tiafoe after the American beat Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-3.

Tiafoe will be aiming to win consecutive matches at a tour-level event for just the second time this season when he meets Tsitsipas. The American's best result this year was a semi-final showing in Delray Beach.

Last year in the desert, the 26-year-old enjoyed a run to his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. Tiafoe did not drop a set en route to the last four before Daniil Medvedev stopped him.
