France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin broke through in Cincinnati Sunday, qualifying at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 main draw for the first time after rolling past wild card Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-1 in 57 minutes.
The 27 year old reached the quarter-finals at the Campbell’s Hall Of Fame Tennis Championships and is ranked No. 113 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.
Today’s win saw you qualify into your first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in your 12th attempt. How does it feel to break through and what made the difference this time around?
It’s great to finally get through the qualies of a Masters 1000 tournament. I had a few opportunities in Bercy and Monte Carlo and didn’t play as well. Today I had a good chance against a guy I didn’t know, so I think it was a good draw. I spoke a little bit with Jeremy Chardy who lost to him yesterday, so he told me a few things that helped me during the match today. I’m happy to get through and am looking forward to the main draw.
You’re playing in Cincinnati for the first time. How do you like the venue and area so far?
It’s nice… not too hot. Sometimes it’s so hot and humid out there. There are good crowds. I played on a nice stadium today. I like the courts as they are fast, which is good for my game. I’m very pleased to be here.
Your father Christophe reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros. What sort of influence, if any did he have on your game and what have you learned from him?
He taught me how to play, how to be confident and not lose your mind when you are playing. But with my game, like with my forehand and backhand, he didn’t teach me so much. It was more advice; always work hard, do your best, and then you’ll see what happens.
In July, you won the Granby Challenger in Vancouver and are close to returning to the Top 100. What do you need to do to be able to play ATP World Tour level events on a regular basis?
I have to be more confident with my game, specifically my return game. That’s what I did in Granby, so I’ll try to do the same here. For the moment it’s working a little bit, so I hope I can keep being confident and beat some great players at big tournaments like this one.

In Marseille, Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin lifted their second team trophy of the season, rallying to defeat Dustin Brown and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the Open 13 final.
Having wasted five break point opportunities in the first set, Mahut and Roger-Vasselin converted the only break of serve in the second set, and won 50 per cent of their return points in the Match Tie-break to claim victory in 83 minutes. "For us it always feels like playing at home here in Marseille. I've been playing this event for 10 years now," Mahut said. "We had a great week and I'm very proud of this title. The atmosphere was great during the whole week. Even when playing on court 1, we got great crowds."
The Frenchmen are the first team to capture two ATP World Tour titles this year, having also triumphed on home soil at the Open Sud de France (d. Hanley-Murray) in Montpellier earlier this month. Mahut moved to a 5-4 final record, while both of Roger-Vasselin's final appearances have come in 2012. "We are planning to play more events together this year," said Mahut. "The next one will be the challenger in Guadeloupe. I'll also play a few events with Julien Benneteau."
Tsonga was bidding to win his fifth doubles title, whereas Brown was bidding for his second crown.

Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin captured their first ATP World Tour title at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier Sunday, defeating No. 3 seeds Paul Hanley and Jamie Murray 6-4, 7-6(4). "It means a lot to me," Roger-Vasselin told ATPWorldTour.com. "Nicolas and I won a few titles at the Challenger level, but to win a title on the ATP World Tour, especially in France, it's wonderful."
The French pair fired 12 aces, won 93 per cent of their first serve points, and converted the only break of serve in the match to lift the trophy in one hour and 23 minutes. They did not drop a set or lose serve during the tournament. "We had a great week, playing well each round," said Mahut. "Today, I feel we both served very well. We had one break point in the first set, and we made it, and then won the tie-break in the second set. We knew it was going to be hard as we were playing a good team. It's great to win a title in France."
Mahut levelled his doubles final record to a 4-4 mark, while Roger-Vasselin celebrated his first career tour-level title. The two had previously teamed up to win four titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. "We want to play again in Marseille, so hopefully we get in," Roger-Vasselin said. "If we can play as well as we did here, maybe we'll have a chance to win again."
