ATP Spotlight on Robin Haase

Obrazek

During the Sony Ericsson Open, I sat down with Dutch ATP player and current world #53, Robin Haase to chat memorable moments, the perks of being a tennis player, the players he would most want to party with and Novak Djokovic as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

Even though he was running late to the interview, he was apologetic and friendly, showcasing his signature curls and inviting smile. I made sure to take full advantage of his good attitude after defeating Australian Marinko Matosevic earlier in the day, 6-3, 6-4. He will next face 22nd-seed Jurgen Melzer in the second round.

What is your most memorable moment on-court?

It’s a tough one. It’s always tough to say that because you are always in a different time of your career – and you have many moments. I can go back to when I was 12, the most important thing was to win the national championships. Of course, that’s not my most memorable moment, but it’s always tough to say what is. I had a great experience almost beating Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon [in 2010] — took him to five sets, on center court. He was defending champion and #1 in the world, and of course, to play on the nicest court of the tennis world was a great experience. Also, last year I won my first ATP event and I think that’s, of course, a memorable moment.

What’s the best part of being a tennis player?

The best part is that I made tennis, which is my hobby, as my job. I think that not a lot of people can say that they do what they love to do, every day, day in and day out. But it’s not as easy as people think. It’s not just as glamorous a life as people think. It’s also a hard life but I enjoy it every day.

What’s the toughest part?

The toughest part is the many weeks of travelling, playing a lot of tournaments, having to go to almost all the continents. That’s not easy. You lose almost every week, so every week you have to recover from disappointment. That’s hard.

Do you have any superstitions on court?

No, not really. I think there’s also a big difference between superstition and rituals, so I have the same kind of warm up to prepare for the match. But it’s not like Nadal with the bottles, or stepping on lines. I don’t have that. Sometimes I take the same ball and sometimes I don’t.

If you’re hosting a party, what three tennis players do you invite?

I think I would pick the ones I am closest friends to. With friends you go to parties and dinners. One of the guys would be Jarkko Nieminen. I think almost everyone would invite him, he’s a great guy. I know Marin Cilic from juniors too. I get along with, for example, from the States, Michael Russell. There are a lot of guys, of course, but there are some guys you kind of practice more with, have dinner with. So I think these guys are it.

Who’s the toughest opponent you have ever faced on-court?

Of course, it’s the top 3 or 4 players. It’s always tough to play them. I wouldn’t say Nadal is the toughest for me to play because I took him to five sets. For me, it’s Djokoivc. I played him twice and didn’t even have a chance to get close to winning a set. So that’s probably the toughest guy for me to play. But outside of that there is also Soderling, Berdych, Del Potro — these kinds of players are tough to beat.

What are two things you couldn’t live without?

(Long pause) Air? (laughs) I’m not really materialistic, I don’t care about a lot of “stuff.” But of course, friends and family, and health, that’s most important in life. Just recently in Indian Wells, a family member of mine died, so that’s most important, and all the other “stuff” are extra.

How did you handle the personal loss during Indian Wells on the emotional side?

That was fine. I knew it was going to happen. I decided to go and play, so for me was ok. I was almost happy that it happened because it was better that way [because of the suffering].

And to end on a fun note, what is your biggest indulgence?

I’m not really the gadget guy, don’t wear watches. So I can’t think of something.

A type of food, maybe?

You can always wake me up for good Japanese or Italian. I love to eat. Every day I go out to restaurants. As a tennis player, you get to see a lot of good restaurants so you get really picky. So certainly, that’s something I look forward to every day. You’re always practicing, so going out for dinner for one, two, or even three hours at a time, you can have fun and enjoy.

I can cry like Roger, just a shame I can't play like him. AM

MONTE-CARLO ROLEX MASTERS 2012
Robin Haase Q&A: 99% Correct

Obrazek
Haase reached the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

Robin Haase advanced to the round of 16 at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event for the first time Wednesday, defeating Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-4 at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. The 25 year old, who captured his first title at the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel last year, faces Thomaz Bellucci next.

As part of ATPWorldTour.com’s new Q&A series, Haase talks about his success on clay, his decision to play right-handed and who he’d like to trade places with for a day.

Clay has become your most consistent surface win percentage wise. What is it about your game that suits it so well?
I like to play on it. Although I’m pretty tall, I can defend really well. It gives me time to round around and do something with my forehand. And also, I like to mix it up with a high ball or a drop shot. So clay suits my game in that way.

After returning from a second knee surgery in 2010, you won five Challenger titles on clay that season en route to being named the ATP’s Comeback Player of the Year. Talk about the road back from the injury.
That was a tough time. It took one and a half years to start again and another year to come back. But within eight months, I was in the Top 100 again. It was a great feeling to come back that fast. I have a lot of appreciation from the other guys who nominated and voted me as the Comeback Player of the Year. I played well and I always believed in myself that once I got healthy, I would come back.

You’re actually left-handed, but play right-handed. What went into that decision?
I started so young, and I just picked up a racquet one day. I did most things with my left hand. But when I was three or four, I didn’t know how to serve. What do you do when you’re a young kid? You copy everyone else. So I copied my family by doing it with my right hand. When I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, and said a professional tennis player, my father said I had to choose a side. That’s when I decided to play right-handed.

Personality wise, which player on tour are you most similar to?
It’s difficult for me to say, but if guys were to say he’s the guy that’s like Jarkko Nieminen, I would be happy.

When was the last time you attended another sporting event?
At the Dallas Challenger, I went to see the Dallas Mavericks play. I try to go whenever I can to see an ice hockey or basketball game. I like to watch them live.

Reveal to ATPWorldTour.com one of your bad habits.
I try to be right most of the time. But 99 per cent of the time, I am right. (laughter)

If you could be somebody else in the world for one day, who would it be and why?
Probably a singer or performer. As an athlete, you kind of know what it’s like to play in front of 10,000 or more people. But whether you’re the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Adele, what you can achieve by just singing and how you make people feel, that would be pretty cool.

Can you sing?
No, I can’t sing!

Po wielu latach tułaczki Robin wreszcie znalazł swoje miejsce. :P Historia zna wiele przypadków, gdzie dany zawodnik szczególnie upodobał sobie granie i wygrywanie w jednym miejscu. Kitz już zawsze będzie miejscem szczególnym dla młodego Van Nisterlooya, nawet jeżeli jego gra pozwoli mu na wielkie wyniki w przyszłości. Życzę mu tego.

Haase Retains Kitzbühel Title

Obrazek

Dutchman Robin Haase retained his bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel title on Saturday in a rain-interrupted final against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Third seed Haase improved to 9-0 lifetime at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament with a 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 victory over top seed Kohlschreiber in two hours and eight minutes.

"I didn't feel too much pressure even if I was the defending champion," said Haase. "I was a bit nervous in the first match against [Philipp] Oswald. From the quarter-finals on, I started a bit nervously before calming down and winning.

"I'm happy I won here again. I don't think many players have won here twice. It doesn't happen too often nowadays. I'm very proud of that."

By capturing his second ATP World Tour title, Haase won €64,700 in prize money and 250 South African Airways ATP Ranking points. Kohlschreiber, who is now 4-3 lifetime in title matches, received €34,080 and 150 points. On Monday, Kohlschreiber will make his debut in the Top 20 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings.

Kohlschreiber was the dominant player in the first set, but could not convert any of his six break point opportunities. He held his nerve in the tie-break, before a heavy rain shower suspended play for more than one hour.

Upon the resumption, World No. 42 Haase dropped eight points on his serve in the second set, before taking an early lead in the decider. Kohlschreiber fought hard, saving five of seven break points, but Haase’s greater firepower helped him to his 18th match win of the season. Last year, the 25 year old beat Albert Montanes for the title.

Both players will now travel to London for the Olympic Games Tennis Event, which is underway at the All England Club, Wimbledon. Haase will play No. 16 seed Richard Gasquet of France, while Kohlschreiber is set to face Slovenian Blaz Kavcic.

"I will fly to London tonight at 9 p.m.," said Haase. "Against Gasquet, I have to play with confidence and serve well."

Kohlschreiber dropped to a 36-17 match record on the season, which includes one ATP World Tour title at the BMW Open in Munich (d. Cilic).

"The last two days were very intense,” said Kohlschreiber. “It was a great tournament and a great season so far.

"It's a bit tough right now, but I'm still happy since I reached the Top 20 with my performance this week and I played very well here."

Podczas meczu I rundy RG'13 Robin przełamał fatalną serię 17 kolejnych przegranych TB. Obiecał też, że kolejny raz taki impas nie będzie miał miejsca. :)
Haase snapped his losing streak of 17 consecutive tie-breaks against De Schepper. ''I was bound to win one eventually'', he spoke in a nonchalant manner. ''Hopefully I won't lose 17 in a row again''
