Super Safarova Into First Major Final

- Lucie Safarova rebounded from a slow start and held off an inspired fightback from Ana Ivanovic in the second set to reach the first Grand Slam final of her career at the French Open.

Ivanovic, who went all the way to the title here in 2008, came out stronger, her huge forehand in full flow as she stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, and she kept her nose in front - 4-1, even 5-2.

But a mid-match surge from Safarova, winning eight of the next nine games, put her ahead a set and a break, 7-5, 3-1, and a few games later she found herself serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set.

It was a pivotal game - she had a match point, double faulting, and she fought off three break points, but with a backhand that clipped the tape and sailed wide, Ivanovic had the break back for 5-all.

But there was one last swing as the No.13-seeded Safarova broke then held to close out the No.7-seeded Ivanovic after an hour and 52 minutes, 7-5, 7-5, rifling one last forehand winner on match point.

It was the Czech's 36th winner of the match, exactly 18 of those coming off that forehand wing.

"I started a little bit slower in the match and wasn't swinging as much as I should. I was a little slow on my feet," Safarova said. "Ana was playing well right away and going for her shots, too, but I slowly started getting into the rhythm, into the game. Then right away I took the set, took the momentum.

"In the second set, when I realized I could finally be in the finals, I got a little bit tense there. And the game at 5-4, I was really overthinking and couldn't really concentrate to be there in that moment.

"But when I lost serve, I shook it off and started to play aggressive again, and I served it out."

She was also asked if being in her first Grand Slam final had sunken in yet.

"Not yet," she said. "It's slowly sinking in and it's just amazing. The happiness is unreal."

And how much sweeter is it given it's been over a decade since she went pro?

"It's my 12th year on tour, and to reach this finally, you appreciate it much more, I think."

Before this, Safarova's best Grand Slam result was a semifinal at Wimbledon last year, falling to Petra Kvitova, whom she will join in the Top 10 come Monday - it will be the first time two Czech women will be in the Top 10 together since October 1989 (when Helena Sukova and Jana Novotna were there).

Lucie Safarova postanowiła wrócić do korzeni. Jej trenerem został Rob Steckley, który doprowadził ją do największych singlowych sukcesów. Czeszka pod kierunkiem Kanadyjczyka osiągnęła półfinał Wimbledonu 2014 i finał Rolanda Garrosa 2015 oraz zdobyła tytuł w Dosze(2015). We wrześniu 2015 roku wspięła się na najwyższe w karierze piąte miejsce w rankingu.
Drogi Safarovej i Steckleya się rozeszły się niedługo po US Open 2016. Nowym trenerem Czeszki został Frantisek Cermak.

Rok 2015 był dla Safarovej wspaniały, ale pod jego koniec dopadły ją problemy zdrowotne, infekcja bakteryjna i będące jej następstwem zapalenie stawów. Musiała odpocząć od tenisa przez kilka miesięcy i nie zagrała w Australian Open 2016. Jedyny pozytywny dla niej akcent 2016 roku, jeśli chodzi o singlowe dokonania, to tytuł zdobyty w Pradze. Czeszka spadła w rankingu na 64. miejsce.

Sezon 2017 Safarova musiała zakończyć przedwcześnie z powodu kontuzji nadgarstka. Udało się jej wrócić do Top 30 rankingu. W dużych turniejach najlepiej spisała się w Miami, gdzie doszła do ćwierćfinału. Poza tym zanotowała finał w Budapeszcie oraz półfinały w Tajpej, Nottingham, Birmingham i Quebec City oraz ćwierćfinał w Toronto. W deblu Safarova wywalczyła wielkoszlemowe tytuły w Australian Open i Rolandzie Garrosie razem z Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Po paryskiej imprezie Czeszka rozstała się z Cermakiem i od tamtej pory pozostawała bez trenera.

Wznowienie współpracy Safarovej ze Steckleyem zostało ogłoszone w formie specjalnego filmu umieszczonego na Facebooku. Nakręcony został na Florydzie, gdzie Safarova przygotowuje się do sezonu. Nie zabrakło na nim Franceski Schiavone, która trenuje w tym samym miejscu.

Lucie Safarova wins Prague Open for 7th career WTA title

PRAGUE (AP) — Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic came from a set down to win the Prague Open, overcoming Sam Stosur of Australia 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final on Saturday.

Safarova broke Stosur for 4-3 in the final set and served out with her 14th ace to claim her seventh WTA title, and first in 14 months. She improved her record against Stosur to 11-3.

"It was a big fight," Safarova said. "It's always tough against her. I was waiting for my chance and it came in the second set."

Coming back from a bacterial infection last year, Safarova, the French Open runner-up last year, didn't win a singles this season until this week in Prague, where she won five in a row.

In the opening set, Stosur got a break for 2-0 and held on, saving one break point at 4-2 before serving it out.

But she struggled with her serve in the remaining two sets, serving seven double faults. She didn't look disappointed after the final.

"I still had a pretty good week," the 2011 U.S. Open champion said.

Safarova broke Stosur to go 2-0 up in the second set after the Australian double-faulted on a break point, and got another break for 4-0 with a forehand winner.

Lucie announces retirement from tennis

This weekend, Lucie Safarova is in Prague, to attend the Fed Cup final. She just gave a press conference to announce her retirement from tennis.

The Australian Open 2019 will be her last tournament and she will retire both from the singles and doubles competition.

Lucie has been struggling since 2015 with health issues and this is the main reason behind her decision.
