But he's yet to lose his serve in Cordoba. He saved all five break points for the second consecutive match.

Argentine faces compatriot Pella Sunday in first ATP Tour final

Juan Ignacio Londero was born in Jesus Maria, Argentina, just 50 kilometres from Cordoba, the home of this week’s Cordoba Open. So it was convenient for the 25-year-old wild card to have friends and family come cheer for him on Tuesday as he tried to earn his first tour-level victory against fifth seed Nicolas Jarry.

Little did the Argentine know what the week would bring. The World No. 112, previously 0-3 on the ATP Tour, is into the final of the ATP 250 event, dominating two-time tour-level ATP Tour champion Federico Delbonis on Saturday in one hour to reach his maiden championship match.

“It's all very crazy,” Londero said. “I'm really not aware of what I'm doing this week, that's the truth.”

Before the tournament, Londero owned just two triumphs against Top 100 opposition. He has doubled that number this week, advancing to the final without dropping set.

“I came to the tournament knowing that I was playing well... I came with the expectations of knowing that I could pass a few rounds, but I could not see myself in the final,” Londero said. “I did not see myself far away. Last year I won two Challengers, [reached] one final. I was there to be able to make the jump to ATP Tournaments as well.”

Londero has acquitted himself well, getting broken just once in the tournament. The 5’11” right-hander has saved 16 of the 17 break points he has faced.

His dream run conjures memories of similar efforts in the past by players who had not won a tour-level match before battling to a final. Belgian Steve Darcis was 0-2 entering Amersfoort in 2007 when he qualified and lifted the trophy. Santiago Ventura had never played a tour-level match when he qualified for Casablanca in 2004 and then captured the crown. Former World No. 6 Nicolas Lapentti owned five tour-level wins when he competed in his first ATP Tour event as a qualifier in Bogota 24 years ago, winning his first title.

For now, Londero is numb, trying to live in the moment. While it’s been a week to remember in front of his home crowd, he has one more match to go against compatriot Guido Pella. Pella has won all three of their professional clashes, although none have come at tour-level. If Londero emerges victorious, he will crack the Top 75 of the ATP Rankings on Monday.

“I never imagined this, being in a final. I do not understand yet the sensations that I am having and I can not describe it,” Londero said. “But I’m loving it.”

Pella Sets All-Argentine Final In Cordoba Against Londero

Argentine Guido Pella on Saturday advanced to his fourth ATP Tour final (0-3), defeating Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the Cordoba Open.

A home favourite is guaranteed to win the first edition of the tournament, as Pella's compatriot, Juan Ignacio Londero, continued his dream run by reaching the championship match earlier in the day.

Pella has now made an ATP Tour final in four consecutive years. His first title match ironically came against Cuevas in Rio de Janeiro three years ago. That clash was also a three-setter.

Pella took advantage of a tiring Cuevas, using his heavy left-handed forehand to control play and keep the Uruguayan deep in the court. Earlier Saturday, Cuevas won his rain-delayed quarter-final against Aljaz Bedene. But after winning the second set against Pella, he was unable to take the Argentine out of rhythm.

Pella's opponent in the final, Londero, arrived in Cordoba without a tour-level win. But he defeated compatriot Federico Delbonis 6-1, 6-0 in exactly one hour to make his maiden ATP Tour final.

Londero had won just one of his seven sets in his three previous tour-level matches before this week. But the 25-year-old has triumphed in all four of his Cordoba matches without losing a set. Londero has saved 16 of the 17 break points he has faced on the Argentine red clay.

Against Delbonis, Londero did not face break point. The World No. 112, who will crack the Top 100 for the first time on Monday, won 58 per cent of his return points. Pella has won all three of his matches against Londero, none of which came at tour-level.

Juan Ignacio Londero could do no wrong this week at the Cordoba Open. The 25-year-old Argentine, who hadn't won a tour-level match before this week, won his maiden ATP Tour title on Sunday, beating countryman Guido Pella 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Londero, who was a wild-card entrant, was down a set and a break against the 28-year-old Pella, who also was going for his maiden ATP Tour title after losing his first three finals. But Londero stayed aggressive and took control of the final, with his forehand inflicting much of the damage and the Cordoba crowd carrying him to the finish.

Few players have celebrated such come-from-nowhere runs. Belgian Steve Darcis was 0-2 entering Amersfoort when he qualified and won the title in 2007. Spain's Santiago Ventura had never played a tour-level match when he qualified for Casablanca in 2004 and then captured the crown.

And former World No. 6 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador owned only five tour-level wins when he competed in his first ATP Tour event, as a qualifier in Bogota 24 years ago, and won his first title.

Pella had beaten Londero all three of their prior meetings -- two on the Futures tour and one on the ATP Challenger Tour. The left-hander, with deep, consistent groundstrokes, placed the onus on Londero to start, and the first-time finalist felt the moment. The 25-year-old from nearby Jesus Maria dropped his serve in the second game, and Pella, with the experience of four previous finals, was steady to take the opener.

It was the first set Londero had dropped all week. In his semi-final match, he lost only one game, demolishing two-time ATP Tour titlist Federico Delbonis 6-1, 6-0. But Londero regrouped in the second, finding more inside-out forehands. And while Pella's patience had paid off in the opening set, Londero hit his targets more often and broke in the 12th game to force a final set.

Pella never recovered. The left-hander was broken three times in the final set and fell to 0-4 in finals. He will receive 150 ATP Rankings points and $49,205 in prize money.

Londero, No. 112 in the ATP Rankings, will receive 250 ATP Rankings points and is projected to rise to No. 69 on Monday when the new rankings are released. He will receive $90,990 in prize money, or about 30 per cent of his career prize money before this week ($317,482).

Juan Ignacio Londero hadn't won a tour-level match before playing at the Cordoba Open. But on Sunday, the 25-year-old Argentine beat compatriot Guido Pella to win his first ATP Tour title. Londero spoke with ATPTour.com about the surprise milestone.

You’ve won your first ATP Tour title in your home country. What does that mean to you?
The truth is that I do not know what to tell you. It is an incredible feeling, for sure, and I did not expect to win the tournament. I came hoping to win one, two matches, even though I felt I was on a very good level. I knew I was training well, winning practice sets... It's really something that I will never forget.

At the age of 25, did you ever imagine winning your first ATP Tour title?
I saw Schwartzman, Fognini, Carreno Busta [walking around]... Having played so few ATP tournaments, I did not know if I would be able to win against them. But I loved the challenge. I really wanted to come to the tournament and measure myself against players I had never faced.

I'll speak from the heart: I never expected to win a tournament, not even close. Never thought about it. But I knew I could reach a semi-final, a few quarter-finals maybe. The truth is that I had doubts, but it is not that [the title] fell from the sky: I have done a great job. I have been playing very well and working hard and I showed it all this week. I lost a single set, played with great players and it was not a coincidence that I have this result. But still I did not expect it.

Is it extra special with family and friends to be here watching you win your first ATP Tour title?
Very special having won the tournament here, in Cordoba, in the first edition of the tournament. But only today I could start looking at the people on court to see them. Before I did not look at anybody, I did not want to look in order stay focused.

I just looked at my coach, at my team... At first, I enjoyed very little because I had tremendous nerves. But focusing was the key all week. Yesterday we went to have dinner, the day before the final, and it was my coach, my manager and me, the three of us alone. I was focused on what I had to do, and nobody else came. But it's amazing. I can win any other tournament in my life but none will be like this, trust me.

How were you feeling going into your first ATP Tour final against your countryman who was playing in his fourth final and was the favourite?
I was very nervous before the match... I could not even speak before entering. My physical trainer said to look at him before the match and to be calm, to try to let it go. It was the match that I enjoyed the most from the start. I knew that Guido had experience, but the audience helped me too.

You came into the tournament having never won a tour-level match. Are you surprised to win the title in your first tournament?
It was an incredible emotion just to win my first ATP main draw match against Nicolas Jarry, a great player who plays very well. The matches were going on and I wanted more, Gringo (my coach) was talking about believing in me, that I was close. He told me to trust myself, that I could do it. I outplayed them all, and I never believed or trusted in myself too much. He was behind me, talking to me and today it came real.

You did not lose a set en route to the final. What part of your game were you most happy with?
That's the confidence I had. I was able to do things well on the court and knew that it was possible. It confirms that I am at a great level, and little by little I believe more and more that this success will continue.

You are now into the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings for the first time, at No. 69 from No. 112. How does it feel to be in the Top 100?
Incredible, it is a very difficult question. I am very emotional. You have to understand that I came to try to play this tournament to see if I could win a round and that way I could be closer to defending the 130 points I had. I knew I had minimal chance of entering the Roland Garros main draw, but now I’m in. Now the new ATP Ranking will appear and I cannot explain it. I will look at it several times to believe it.

Now that you are in the Top 100 and have captured your first ATP Tour title, what are your goals for the rest of 2019?
It is very crazy, everything that happened to me in this tournament, and I will take everything week by week. First I must think why everything this week happened, and then set new goals for the rest of the year... This is a big step for my motivation. Nowadays I am a player who is going forward, and I want to continue like this.

Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you get to this level in your career?
To all my team, of course, for those who have supported me for a long time, to Gringo, Agus, Roberto, the SportsLab team, my psychologist, my Yoga teacher that I started working with this year and the families that helped me. To all of them, thank you very much.

From Challenger Star To ATP Tour Champion

It was 16 April, 2018. A blanket of humidity descended on the west coast of Florida, as players and fans scrambled to brave the scorching spring conditions on Day 1 of the Sarasota Open. In other words, it was just your typical afternoon at the ATP Challenger Tour event, with competitors battling to adapt and survive on the green clay.
But as his Challenger colleagues kicked off the tournament, Juan Ignacio Londero was enjoying a well-deserved day of rest. A large pine tree towered overhead, as he nestled against its trunk, gazing across the courts of the Laurel Oak Country Club. The chaos of opening day echoed throughout the grounds, but a pensive Londero was undeterred, reflecting on the moment that had just changed his career.
“I've been trying so hard to earn a title for a long time. This is amazing. It's been a long process and a difficult one at that."
At the age of 24, Londero was coming off his first ATP Challenger Tour triumph. A day earlier, he was standing on Centre Court at the CDMX Open in Mexico City, celebrating his biggest victory in front of a sold-out crowd. Not only was he appearing in the first final of his eight-year career, but he had stormed through qualifying to get there, eventually claiming the title with the loss of just one set.
Following his victory in the Mexican capital, Londero was speechless, unable to describe his emotions from the previous week. Ten months later and the Argentine is at a loss for words once again. Another career-altering moment has arrived, but this time on the ATP Tour.

On Sunday, Londero captured his maiden tour-level crown at his hometown Cordoba Open. In front of friends and family, he would make a splash in his return to the ATP Tour, six years removed from his debut on the circuit.
"I arrived at the tournament knowing that I was playing well," Londero said. "I arrived in Cordoba knowing that I could win a few rounds, but I never saw myself in the final or winning the title."
He was an unseeded wild card who had never won a tour-level match entering the week, so how did Londero suddenly put it all together for such a dream run? Where did he develop his game for his big breakthrough? Look no further than his 2018 campaign on the ATP Challenger Tour. After many years struggling with injuries off the court and consistency between the lines, it finally all came together. Not all paths to stardom are a straight line and Londero is showing his own formula to the top.

The Argentine endured a long journey as he fought through years of injury and illness. In 2015, he battled an ailment similar to the mumps, which drained his energy and left him bed-ridden for more than a month and unable to compete for even longer. And when a herniated disc forced him to the sidelines once again, Londero admits that it was one of his lowest moments.
"Before Mexico City, I did not know what the winning form felt like. It was a dozen things that just kept happening to me and I got stuck."


But something clicked for Londero as he competed on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2018. Mexico City would prove to be the turning point as he battled to a 40-win season, later adding a second crown on the clay of Marburg, Germany, in July. Few players tasted victory as often as Londero, who was one of just three members of the 40-win club, along with Jordan Thompson and Christian Garin. In total, he amassed a 40-17 record, fast becoming one of the more feared competitors on the tour. His 2018 campaign proved to be the springboard to his ATP Tour breakthrough.
"I always knew that I could play at this level," Londero said after his victory in Cordoba. "I did not see myself as being very far. Last year, I won two Challenger titles, reached another final, and I was trying to make the jump to the ATP Tour. But I never imagined this. It's incredible to go from playing Challengers to get to this moment.
"Last year, I found my identity on the court and worked hard to find my game. I know how I have to play. Learning that was so important for my career. I was concentrating only on what was going on in the moment and on the court - not on who was winning, what I was doing right or wrong - but focusing on the moment."

This level of discipline was instilled in Londero by his new coach Andres Schneiter. One of the top coaches on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2018, Schneiter also guided Christian Garin to a 46-15 mark, three titles and a Top 100 debut. Both pupils credit him with changing their mentality on and off the court. That is, channeling their doubts and internal dialogues in a productive manner.
"I have a way of working with my players, where I work to build the mental part first," said Schneiter. "So that the player is focused and composed on the court and when they are away from it as well."
Not only did Londero lift his first ATP Tour trophy on Sunday, but he celebrated his Top 100 debut in the process, soaring 43 spots to a career-high No. 69 in the ATP Rankings. Considering he was outside the Top 350 a year ago, it is a staggering achievement. With the opportunity to compete for even bigger prizes in 2019, Londero has his sights set on the Top 50 and beyond.
