Marcel Granollers won his fourth ATP World Tour title after a disastrous start.
Marcel Granollers overcame a disastrous start to win his fourth ATP World Tour title on Saturday at the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel. The Spaniard rallied to defeat second seed Juan Monaco 0-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes.

It is the first time a player has recovered from a 0-6 first set to win an ATP World Tour title since Nikolay Davydenko defeated Rafael Nadal 0-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 in the 2010 final of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.

"Today I was half on my way to the airport, but I kept on fighting and started to play better in the middle of the second set," said Granollers.

World No. 53 Granollers captured his first ATP World Tour title since 2011, when he lifted the trophies at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad and the Valencia Open 500. He improved to a 4-2 finals record.

Granollers is set to return to the Top 40 of the Emirates ATP Rankings after earning 250 ranking points and €74,000 in prize money. He reached as high as World No. 19 in July last year.

The Barcelona native is the sixth different Spaniard to win an ATP World Tour title this year, joining Rafael Nadal (7), David Ferrer (2), Tommy Robredo (2), Feliciano Lopez (1) and Albert Montanes (1).

Granollers improved to a 3-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head lead over Monaco, having also beaten the Argentine in the 2011 Valencia final. Monaco looked set to avenge that loss as he raced to the first set in just 24 minutes, losing only three points on serve and nine in total.

Granollers got himself on the board in the second game of the second set and swung the momentum in his favour as he broke for a 4-3 lead. The Spaniard was unable to close out the set when serving for it at 5-4, but won the ensuing tie-break to level the match.

He surged ahead 4-0 in the deciding set, but had to withstand a late fightback from Monaco. The Tandil native rallied from a 0/40 deficit in the eighth game and broke Granollers back as he served for the match to get back to 5-4. Granollers regrouped to break Monaco in the next game, though, to claim victory.

"I definitely didn’t start well, but he played unbelievable, very solid with almost no mistakes," said Granollers.

"But until you lose the last point, you are still standing and I kept on going. I got probably more nervous than usual when I had to close the match at 5-3 in the third, but it’s normal to get that way in a final. I played very well after that and I did it. I came into this week playing well so I knew I could do something here."

Monaco was chasing his second ATP World Tour title of the season after victory at the Power Horse Cup in Dusseldorf (d. Nieminen); he dropped to an 8-10 finals record. The 29 year old was looking to reclaim the Kitzbuhel title he had won in 2007, with victory over Potito Starace.

“I am disappointed to not have been able to come through today," said Monaco. "The score never lies and I need to congratulate Marcel because he was a better player than me.

"Of course I know that overall, this was a great week for me. If I can be in the final every week, I will sign immediately. When I think where I was at the beginning of the season this is great.

"I probably played my best tennis of the year in the first set, which I need to be happy about, but Marcel started to play better and things turned around unfortunately for me. I really enjoyed being back in Kitzbuhel after 2007 when I won.”

Q. Has anyone ever played better against you?

MARCEL GRANOLLERS: Well, when you play against No. 1 of the world, is difficult match, no? I think he play very good. I didn't play of course a great match. I didn't serve good. At the end, it's very easy match for him, but I have to be positive and thinking about I made a very good tournament here.

Q. Is it possible to play well in the fourth round after having played five sets first round, second round, and third round? It was going to be hard to be ever have a chance today, I guess.

MARCEL GRANOLLERS: Well, even if I go three matches before in three sets, is difficult to beat Nole, no? It's very difficult match for me. I was trying my best, and I didn't play my best tennis today. But I think he play very good.

Q. What did you think about the atmosphere against Smyczek? He was saying it felt a little like Davis Cup. Did you agree with that?

MARCEL GRANOLLERS: It was a nice match, no? I think we both was fighting a lot in the court, and was really nice atmosphere with the crowd. I was really happy after the match, no? Was 4 1 down in the fifth and then I come back, and I was very happy.

Q. What do you think about his potential as a player?

MARCEL GRANOLLERS: He play very well, no? I think he's playing right now very good. Solid, very solid player. For sure in the future he will play better, for sure.

Q. Nole won the first 25 points today on his serve. Was there something he was doing especially well on that?

MARCEL GRANOLLERS: No, no, it was not easy to play today. It was windy, and I didn't feel very good on my return. (In Spanish.)

Former champions Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez got off to a winning start at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday.

The sixth-seeded Spaniards, who have qualified for the season finale for the third straight year, defeated fourth seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-4 in their Group B opener. It was their first victory against the French team.

Granollers and Lopez won the prestigious title on their debuts in 2012 (d. Bhupathi-Bopanna).

"We played a solid match, without many errors, solid on our serves," said Granollers. "So we are very happy."

Lopez added, "We want to do our best. Today, we played a great match and we would love to play like that in all the matches."

Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin broke Granollers serve to 30 for a 4-2 lead, but the experienced Spaniards worked their way back into their third meeting to win four straight games to clinch the first set. At 4-4, Benneteau let slip a 40/15 lead. Granollers clinched the 42-minute set with a hold to 15.

In the second set, Granollers and Lopez maintained their momentum and broke Roger-Vasselin serve to 30 for 3-2. Benneteau fought back from 0/40, saving four straight break points to keep the French pair in the set. Ultimately, Granollers closed out for the Spaniards 30th match win of the season.

Granollers and Lopez won their lone ATP World Tour title this year at Buenos Aires. They also reached the finals at Roland Garros (l. to Benneteau-Roger-Vasselin) and the US Open (l. to Bryans).

In the second Challenger final of the year pitting two Top 100 players against each other, unseeded Marcel Granollers produced his best tennis of the week to rout No. 4 seed and defending champion Aljaz Bedene, 6-1, 6-1. The match took just 59 minutes from Granollers, marking the second Challenger final this year to finish in under an hour. With the win, Granollers also stopped Bedene’s streak of seven consecutive victories in Challenger finals.

The veteran Spaniard was in red-hot form throughout the prestigious $125,000+H event, dropping just three games in his final two matches. His victory on Sunday gave him the fourth Challenger title of his career and his first in six years, having last prevailed on home soil at Tarragona in 2010.

Sock/Granollers Blast To Basel Title

Spanish-American duo win first team title
Fourth seeds Marcel Granollers and Jack Sock streaked to the Swiss Indoors Basel title on Sunday, lifting the trophy in their first tournament as a team.
"We knew well going into the week that if we played well, we could be a dangerous team," said Sock. "We're both crafty and like playing from the baseline, but are also comfortable at the net. We served well and he returned very well. He usually carries me on the return games. We just had fun out there and kept it light and loose."
The Spanish-American duo prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Robert Lindstedt and Michael Venus in exactly one hour at the St. Jakobshalle, saving three of four break points faced. They claimed an initial break to love in the second game of the first set and another to open the second set, eventually earning the win on their first match point.
"I will be playing with Ivan Dodig next season," said Granollers. "That's my plan, but I had a great week with Jack here. We had fun and won the title, so it's a very good way to end the season."
For Granollers, it was the 30-year-old's 13th ATP World Tour doubles title and third of 2016. He previously triumphed on the clay of Bastad (w/Marrero) and in Tokyo earlier this month (w/Matkowski). Sock, 24, notched his eighth ATP World Tour doubles crown and second in three weeks. He recently lifted the Masters 1000 trophy in Shanghai with John Isner. The tandem earn 500 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points and split €114,100 in prize money.
Lindstedt and Venus, who were also playing for the first time this week, entered the final on the heels of an upset win over top seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau on Saturday. The Swede is 20-22 in ATP World Tour finals, while the Kiwi fell to 5-7. They plan to team together full-time next season.

Dodig/Granollers Boost London Bid With Basel Title

Croatian-Spanish duo claim second team title
Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers exhibited a dominant display in claiming the doubles title at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The duo did not drop a set all week, capped by 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over Frenchmen Fabrice Martin and Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Sunday.
Currently in command of the final spot in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London, Dodig and Granollers add 500 points to bring their total to 3,490. With less than 1,000 points separating them from four other teams, it will be a mad dash to the finish line at next week's Rolex Paris Masters.
"Thanks to my partner for a great week and through all this season we really tried hard and we have one more title together," said Dodig. "I’m happy, he was defending champion, so a second time for him. Well done. Of course always we have to thank the tournament directors and all the sponsors who are trying to continue this amazing tournament."

The Croatian-Spanish duo rebounded nicely after conceding an immediate break in the first game of the match. They would break right back and eventually took the opener 7-5. The second set would proceed to a tie-break after Martin and Roger-Vasselin were broken when serving to force a decider. After squandering a 6/3 lead, Dodig and Granollers closed it out on their fourth match point after one hour and 43 minutes.
The second seeds improved to 28-14 on the season, adding a second team title. They previously lifted the trophy at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam in February. The tandem split €114,100 in prize money.
Individually, Dodig notched his ninth doubles title and third of the season. He also won the Hamburg crown with Mate Pavic. Granollers, meanwhile, added a 15th doubles crown and second in a row in Basel, having prevailed with Jack Sock last year.
"To defend a title is very important," said Granollers. "I think we played very well and it was a week at a high level. It was the result we were looking for."
The French runners-up split €53,900 in prize money, with Martin falling to 3-7 in ATP World Tour finals and Roger-Vasselin dropping to 14-8.

The Spaniard was a break down in the third set, but would fight for the victory after two hours and 35 minutes. The former World No. 19 is projected to rise 28 spots to No. 149, as he continues his quest to return to the Top 100. It was his first Challenger title since March 2016 (Irving, USA).

"Obviously it has been a great week for me," said Granollers. "I have a lot of confidence from this. It is very important to see the hard work from the preseason pay off in the first work."

Marcel Granollers could not have asked for a better start to 2018. The 31-year-old Spaniard completed back-to-back titles in Bangkok to open his campaign, extending his win streak to 10 in a row. A 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over second seed and countryman Enrique Lopez Perez clinched the crown for Granollers on Sunday. It marked the second straight week in which he rallied from a set down in the final.

In total, the Barcelona native lifted his sixth ATP Challenger Tour trophy. Granollers followed in the footsteps of fellow former Top 50 stalwart Janko Tipsarevic in going back-to-back in Bangkok. Last year, the Serbian completed the feat en route to nomination for Comeback Player of the Year in the 2017 ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon.
