Nadal Continues 'Big Titles' March

Rafael Nadal turned up the heat on rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in their domination of the ‘Big Titles’ leaderboard by winning his third US Open trophy – and 16th major overall – last Sunday in New York.
In defeating Kevin Anderson to capture the final major of the season, Nadal earned his fourth ‘Big Title’ of 2017, having already won his 10th titles at Roland Garros and the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters as well as his fifth Mutua Madrid Open. The Spaniard now has a combined 46 ‘Big Titles’ — a collection of Grand Slams, Masters 1000 events and Nitto ATP Finals — putting him one behind Novak Djokovic’s 47 and within five of leader Roger Federer, who holds 51.
Djokovic still has the best conversion rate, capturing one ‘Big Title’ for every 3.4 events played. But Nadal is close behind with a ratio of 3.5. Djokovic and Nadal share the record for 30 Masters 1000 titles won; Federer has 26 Masters 1000s titles.

Earlier this year Nadal qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the 13th consecutive season, yet surprisingly he has never captured the title at the season finale. Victory in London from 12-19 November would also likely clinch for Nadal the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Ranking for the fourth time (2008, 2010, 2013). He currently leads the effective two-man race for the honour with five-time year-end No. 1 Federer, with whom he has shared this year’s four Grand Slam titles.
Federer qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the 15th time after winning his eighth Wimbledon crown in July, which followed his Australian Open triumph in January. He also added ‘Big Titles’ at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, winning the ‘Sunshine Double’ for the third time in his career.

Nadal still has plenty to play for in 2017. He has never won the three ‘Big Titles’ still on the table this season - the Shanghai Rolex Masters, the Rolex Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals. He was the beaten finalist at the season finale in 2010 (l. to Federer) and 2013 (l. to Djokovic).
Federer has won the Nitto ATP Finals a record six times, most recently in 2011, but has a more modest record in Shanghai and Paris, winning both tournaments just once.

Roger Federer extended his lead on the ‘Big Titles’ scoreboard over rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal by beating the Spanish left-hander to earn his second title at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Sunday.
In taking down his longtime rival, Nadal, Federer captured his fifth ‘Big Title’ of the season, winning two Grand Slams at the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as earning an ATP World Tour-leading third Masters 1000 trophy. The first two came at the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open presented by Itau.
The Swiss upped his total of ‘Big Titles’ — a combination of Grand Slams, Masters 1000 events and Nitto ATP Finals — to 52, five ahead of Djokovic’s 47 and six in front of Nadal’s 46.
The battle for ‘Big Title’ supremacy remains intense, as Djokovic continues to hold the record for best conversion rate, winning one ‘Big Title’ every 3.4 events, with Nadal close behind at 3.5. Federer has won an average of one title per 4.1 tournaments. But with his victory in Shanghai, the 36 year old moved closer to Nadal and Djokovic’s record of 30 Masters 1000 victories with his 27th title. He can move closer to their mark in two weeks at the final Masters 1000 tournament of 2017, the Rolex Paris Masters.

Federer has already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the 15th time, and will attempt to earn his record seventh title at the event from 12-19 November at The O2 in London. The six-time champion has advanced to the final in 10 of the last 14 year-end finales. He missed last year’s edition due to injury.
Nadal is currently No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, and was the first to book his spot in London. The 31 year old is seeking his first title at the Nitto ATP Finals. He has previously made the final in 2010 (l. to Federer) and 2013 (l. to Djokovic). The Spaniard is right behind his Swiss rival with four ‘Big Titles’ this season, winning at Roland Garros, the US Open, the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and the Mutua Madrid Open.
Djokovic will not have a chance to tie Federer’s mark of six Nitto ATP Finals wins due to injury.
Federer will attempt to sweep the final three ‘Big Titles’ of the season for the first time, as he seeks to follow up his Shanghai victory with a second Paris triumph before heading to London for the year-end finale.

Sezon 2017 jest znakomity w wykonaniu Rafaela Nadala. Hiszpan zdobył już sześć tytułów, w tym dwa wielkoszlemowe (Roland Garros i US Open), co udało mu się po raz pierwszy od czterech lat. Andre Agassi: 'Roger Federer can't be considered the GOAT'

Andre Agassi seemed to have changed mind about the GOAT question. After the Rafael Nadal's amazing 2013 season and the apparent Roger Federer's decline, the 'Las Vegas kid' had said the Spaniard was the greatest of all time, before saying earlier this year that the Swiss was above Nadal.

However, in an interview to Le Matin, he gives a different thought once again. 'A player can't be considered the best of all time, if he gets beaten more times by his rival', Agassi said referring to the 23 matches lost by Federer on 38 played to Nadal. 'My choice is purely arbitrary.

I could be churlish and easily give an opposite wording, saying Federer is the best. This debate is not rational, it's down to 'and if...'. It's just a debate.' So Agassi doesn't really believe the GOAT exist, but if he does, it's more Nadal than Federer.

However he praised the Swiss: 'Federer is unique. In everything: greatness, precision, ease. He plays a very different tennis than others. He isn't facilitated, but it seems he takes control of everything and has a solution for any issue.

We can't deny Federer will mark the sport forever.' He finally commented on Novak Djokovic. His cooperation with the Serb is still supposed to be a short-term one. 'He has the 90% of abilities to be the best.

He can do it also without me. But I know that if he learns to do things differently, if he adds that 10%, he can get even better.'

I pomyśleć, że jeszcze 12 miesięcy temu wydawało się, że Nadal niedługo da sobie i nam spokój. Najboleśniejszy rok mojego zainteresowania dyscypliną.
