DAVID GOFFIN: Yeah, it was not easy. It was a tough match. He was playing really fast. It was tough for me to move 100%. I couldn't move 100% today, so it was not -- it was tough for me, because he was playing really fast, left and right. He was really aggressive, so it was tough. It was almost impossible to win today.
Q. You have been playing well lately. How disappointing is it?
DAVID GOFFIN: Yeah, I was playing well. My tennis is there, but -- yeah, since my injury at the French Open, I have never played a match the way I was 100% physically, so it was tough, but I'm going to take time to be 100% as soon as possible.
Q. Of course you didn't have your good day, but how do you see his potential? What makes him tough to play?
DAVID GOFFIN: Yeah, he has a good potential. He's playing well. He's playing really well. Has a good forehand. He's hitting the ball really hard. He takes the ball early also in forehand.
He's really aggressive, so he's a great player, he has good potential. He can improve in every part of his game. But he's only 19 and he's playing really well.
But it's not only him. There is another really good generation under 21, and I'm curious to see who's going to be the best.

Goffin Advances to Third Final of '17

David Goffin advanced to his third final of the season by defeating Henri Laaksonen 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-3 at the Shenzhen Open on Saturday and could further boost his standing in the Emirates ATP Race To London during Sunday's final.
With a win against Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, Goffin would have 2,285 points in the Emirates ATP Race To London, which determines the Top 8 players who compete at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 12-19 November at The O2 in London.
With fifth-placed Stan Wawrinka and ninth-placed Novak Djokovic having ruled themselves out of the season-ending event, Goffin would be in strong position to qualify for the first time at the prestigious tournament.

He was forced to dig deep against the No. 107 Laaksonen. Goffin clinched the first set in a tie-break, then dropped the second after sailing a forehand wide at 6-5. The second-seeded Belgian immediately broke to open the third and broke again at 5-3 to earn the victory in two hours and 16 minutes.
“I'm feeling a little tired; I've never played him before but he's a tough fighter,” Goffin said. “It was a tough battle, especially in the second set. I'm happy with the way I started the third set but it was a fight until the end.
“I've won three matches already in Shenzhen; I'm going to rest tonight to be ready for tomorrow."

Goffin moves a step closer to his first title of the season. The World No. 12 failed to lift the trophy in his two previous attempts this season. In February, Goffin fell to Grigor Dimitrov at Sofia and to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Rotterdam. Laaksonen, the Swiss No. 3 behind Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, was playing in his third straight three-set match and his first ATP World Tour semi-final.
Dolgopolov reached the final by beating Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-4 in 72 minutes. Dzumhur was coming off his maiden title last week at the St. Petersburg Open.
“He had an unbelievable run so I knew he was going to make me play a lot of balls. I was really lucky to serve well today,” said Dolgopolov, who saved all three break points and won almost 90 per cent (31/35) of his first-serve points.
Dolgopolov, No. 53 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, will be playing in his third final of the season but his first on hard courts. In July, he fell to Spaniard David Ferrer at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad. Dolgopolov beat Kei Nishikori in February at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.
The 28 year old leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Goffin 1-0, a straight-sets win at the 2013 US Open.
“I'll try to play more aggressive maybe... David is for sure a solid player. It's nice to see him back on this level,” Dolgopolov said. “I'll just go and fight.”

Goffin Bolsters London Bid With Shenzhen Title

Winning a title on the ATP World Tour is never easy. And the Shenzhen Open final proved no different for World No. 12 David Goffin on Sunday.
But despite losing the second set after recovering from a 1-5 deficit to force a tie-break, the Belgian second seed bolstered his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals by defeating fifth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. He earned his first title of the season in his third attempt, ending a six-final losing streak that began after winning his first two tour-level trophies (2014 Kitzbuhel d. Thiem, 2014 Metz d. Sousa).
The victory helped Goffin strengthen his position in the Emirates ATP Race To London. He will now sit in 13th place, but with Stan Wawrinka (fifth) and Novak Djokovic (ninth) both out for the rest of the year due to injuries, the Belgian is right on the bubble, within five points of Andy Murray for 12th.
“This one is really special because you know it’s always tough to come back from injuries,” said Goffin, who retired in the third round of Roland Garros and missed Wimbledon due to a right ankle injury. “To come back from injury to qualify my country for the Davis Cup final and then to win my third trophy, it means a lot. I cannot be happier today.”
It appeared that Goffin would cruise after winning the opening set in 32 minutes while losing just seven points on his serve, four of which came in one game. But after failing to convert on five break points in the opening game of the second set, the match turned in the Ukrainian’s favor.
Dolgopolov broke Goffin in two of the Belgian’s next three service games to earn what looked like an insurmountable 5-1 lead. But the 26 year old won four games in a row to overcome the double-break deficit and force a tie-break. After the back-and-forth exchange, Dolgopolov earned a mini-break at 5-5 and took advantage of his set point to force a decider.
“It was not easy because I had some opportunities in the first two service games of Alex,” Goffin said. “It was not easy and then he started to play so well...I played really well in the tie-break but he served well and he played a really nice point at 5-5.”
The final set was tense throughout, with no breaks of serve until the eighth game, with Goffin earning a 5-3 lead. Dolgopolov got to 30-30 as the Belgian served for the match, but Goffin pulled through to claim the title after losing all five of his previous sets against the Ukrainian.
“In the third I served really well. I stayed really focused even if I was a little bit tired,” Goffin admitted. “I served really well and I played two really good games at the end of the match.”
Goffin earned 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $118,910 in prize money, while Dolgopolov claimed 150 points and $36,125.
It was the Ukrainian's third final of the season after capturing the final in Buenos Aires (d. Nishikori) and reaching the final in Bastad (l. Ferrer). He continues to display good form after also advancing to the Round of 16 at the US Open.
“For sure I wanted to have an easier second set but I had some issues and overall he played better, I think,” Dolgopolov said. “I had a good week.”

David Goffin reached his second successive final at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2017 on Saturday, a result which moved the Belgian into the final automatic qualification spot for next month’s Nitto ATP Finals.
Goffin moved up one spot past American Sam Querrey (2,435) to No. 10 in the Emirates ATP Race To London — with 2,540 points — for a spot at the season finale, to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November. Goffin started the week at No. 13 in the year-to-date standings.
Fourth seed Goffin improved to 48-18 on the season with a 7-6(3), 7-6(6) victory over fellow baseliner, eighth-seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman, in two hours and three minutes for a place in his fourth ATP World Tour final of the year. Goffin is on an eight-match winning streak, which includes his third trophy last week at the Shenzhen Open (d. Dolgopolov).
He will face top-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic, also vying for a berth in the English capital at No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, or Adrian Mannarino of France in the Tokyo final on Sunday. Last year, Goffin lost to Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the championship match.
At the end of a high-quality first set won by Goffin, dominated by tactical guile and fine groundstroke winners, Schwartzman was left to rue snatching at a forehand destined for down the line and into space at 4-4, with his opponent serving at 0/30. Ultimately, three straight forehand errors by Schwartzman in the tie-break handed Goffin the set.
Goffin broke Schwartzman’s serve in the fifth game of the second set, then recovered from 15/40 in the next game to seize control of the pair’s fourth FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. Schwartzman, a 5’6” in height and the possessor of a blistering forehand, continued to battle and was rewarded — in a run of three straight games — with a Goffin forehand error when the Belgian served for the match at 5-4, 15/40.
Goffin took a 4/2 advantage in the tie-break, but soon found himself at 4/5. He dug deep to respond and lead 6/5, but Schwartzman saved the match point and subsequently double-faulted. The match ended when Schwartzman hit a backhand long of the baseline. Goffin has an 8-1 match record at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament.
Schwartzman, 25, was appearing in his second ATP World Tour semi-final of the year. He reached the same stage at Istanbul in May (l. to Cilic) and has a 32-24 match record in 2017.

In-Form Goffin Captures Tokyo Crown

David Goffin captured the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2017 crown on Sunday, adding to the ATP World Tour title he won last week at the Shenzhen Open (d. Dolgopolov). It was his first trophy at an ATP World Tour 500-level tournament.
Watch by Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako, the fourth-seeded Belgian defeated Adrian Mannarino of France 6-3, 7-5 in 84 minutes at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo for his fourth ATP World Tour title (4-6 overall in finals). Last year, Goffin had finished as runner-up to Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the title match.
“It’s a really special trophy for me, as I won the tournament last week and now have again today,” said Goffin. “It’s a special feeling at a tournament I like. I have a lot of happy memories in Tokyo. It’s difficult to describe my feelings.
“It’s important for me to stay fresh physically and mentally with potentially the [Nitto] ATP Finals ahead and then playing for Belgium in the Davis Cup final. I am ready fight and I want to keep winning.”
Having started the week at No. 13 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, Goffin added a further 200 points on Sunday to move up one spot to No. 8 ahead of Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the battle to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November.
The 26-year-old Goffin, who extended his winning streak to nine matches, will now travel to China for the Shanghai Rolex Masters, which began today, with $336,900 in prize money and 500 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

A lapse in concentration put Goffin under pressure on serve at 2-3, when Mannarino struck aggressively to force an error at 15/40 — with Goffin hitting a backhand wide. Down 2-4, Goffin regrouped to break back immediately and saved a break point at 4-4. The consistent Belgian raised his game in the ninth game, then calmly closed out his 49th match win of 2017 (49-18) with a hold to love.

Goffin is now 3-0 lifetime against Mannarino in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
“It wasn’t easy," said Goffin. “The final is always tough to manage the emotions before and during the match. I just needed one break to win the first set, then in the second set he became more aggressive. Adrian was very solid in the rallies, hitting the ball flat. At the end I started to be a little more aggressive on the return of serve and I was pleased to comeback and break him at 5-5.”
The 29-year-old Mannarino, who is now 0-4 in ATP World Tour finals, recorded the biggest victory of his career in the Tokyo semi-finals on Saturday by beating top-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic. The Frenchman, now 28-23 on the season, which also includes a runner-up finish at the Antalya Open (l. to Sugita), leaves Tokyo with $165,170 in prize money and 300 points.
“David played really well,” said Mannarino. “He broke me once in the first set, but he played three or four winners in a row, so it’s wasn’t easy. I got the break in the second set, but couldn’t hold my serve. The quality of the game was really good, but I wasn’t good enough compared to him. I’ve had a pretty good season, definitely my best so far.”
