Thiem: 'Good Clay Season, Bad Ending'

What was supposed to be a blockbuster semi-final battle on Friday at Roland Garros ended up being a disappointing blow for Dominic Thiem, but the loss doesn’t erase his accomplishments on clay this season.
The Austrian found himself overpowered against Nadal and suffered a straight-sets defeat. But while Thiem was upset by a third loss to the Spaniard this season, he was more disappointed with his performance. The sixth seed hit 34 unforced errors and faded out in the final set, only winning nine points as Nadal cruised to victory.
“I think he played a good match today. I was not on top of my game and that was the result everybody saw,” said Thiem. “It's nice to be in the semis again, but now I'm really disappointed because I just couldn't play the way I wanted to. I don't know why yet, so I have to find some reasons. It was a good clay-court season, but a very bad ending for me.”
Despite the loss, there are still plenty of positives for Thiem to take from his Roland Garros run. He repeated his semi-final run from last year at this event, but did so this time without losing a set. Thiem also picked up his first victory in six attempts against Novak Djokovic in their quarter-final match.

The progress in Paris has extended to his results throughout 2017. He’s already scored wins this year over every player currently ranked in the Top 4 of the Emirates ATP Rankings and has been exceptional on clay. The 23 year old prevailed this February in Rio de Janeiro (d. Carreno Busta) for his first ATP World Tour 500 title, reached the final at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and Mutua Madrid Open (both l. to Nadal) and handed Nadal his only loss on clay this year in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia quarter-finals.
Thiem will remain in the Top 4 of the Emirates ATP Race to London and is well on track to qualify for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals for the second straight year. Given his victories over all of the world’s best players over the past 12 months, his huge game continues to have fans touting him as a future World No. 1.
Next up for the Austrian is the grass-court season. Having already competed in 14 tournaments this year, Thiem will extend his ironman status with more ATP World Tour events in Halle and Antalya before heading over to Wimbledon. It remains the only Grand Slam he hasn’t reached the second week of, but Thiem is confident he can achieve that milestone and more this year.
“It's always nice to play on grass. It's not a long period of the season, so it’s always special,” said Thiem. “It’s completely different than clay because I think you can lose to far more opponents if they have a good day or a big serving day. It’s going to be completely different than the last few weeks.”

Thiem's Best Run On Grass Continues

Austrian will face Berdych in fourth round
In recent years, Dominic Thiem has experienced an array of clay-court success. The right-hander has won six ATP World Tour titles on the red dirt and has twice reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros.
But Thiem has largely struggled to replicate that success on grass. He's well on his way to changing that narrative, though, during this fortnight at Wimbledon.
The 23-year-old Austrian continued his best run at The Championships on Saturday, beating #NextGenATP American Jared Donaldson 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 to make the fourth round of the grass-court Grand Slam for the first time. Thiem had never reached past the second round at the All England Club, falling in the round of 64 the past two years.
He entered Wimbledon this year after a shaky start on the grass as well, having fallen in the second round at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle and during his opener at the Antalya Open in Turkey. But Thiem has put it all past him and has improved his level match by match at SW19.
“I think I'm, in general, a better player than I was last year. This is also paying off on grass. It's different than on clay. On clay, I can go back on the returns and everything. It's just not possible on grass, and that's why I try to play more aggressively and to take the balls a little bit earlier,” Thiem said.

The World No. 8 beat Canadian Vasek Pospisil in straight sets in the first round and prevailed against French veteran Gilles Simon in round two. Thiem had to battle to get past Donaldson, though, who was looking to continue his best showing at Wimbledon.
Donaldson served for the first set at 5-3 but Thiem broke and then won the next three games to clinch the opener. The 20-year-old American continued to fight in the second set, though, seeing four break points at 2-1 but failing to convert any of them. Thiem broke the next game and then won nine of the next 13 games to advance. For the match, Donaldson was one for eight on break points.
Thiem will next face two-time semi-finalist Tomas Berdych, who put on a commanding performance to glide into the second week. The 2010 finalist erased the only break point he faced and won 84 per cent of his first-serve points to beat Spaniard David Ferrer 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes.
Berdych, the 11th seed, converted four of his eight break points against Ferrer, who had beaten 22nd seed Richard Gasquet in the first round and advanced by retirement against Steve Darcis in the second round. The 11th seed advances to the second week of Wimbledon for the ninth time.
“It's the best day of tennis that you can see,” Berdych said of “Manic Monday,” during which all 32 men and women left in the draws play. “I think if anybody asks me for a day that they want to go for the tennis, I'm saying it's the second Monday of Wimbledon.”
Ferrer struggled to gain any traction on Berdych's serve, and during the Spaniard's one opening, Berdych quickly denied the opportunity. Berdych, serving at 30/40, 1-2 in the third set, hit three consecutive service winners to erase the break point and hold.

Austrian seeded No. 1 in ATP World Tour 500 event for first time
Dominic Thiem boasts wins over Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic already this year. Now the 23 year old enters new territory at this week’s Citi Open as top seed at an ATP World Tour 500 event for the first time.
The Austrian boasts a 38-16 start to the season and will look to further improve on that mark when he makes his Washington debut against Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen. In a stacked field, it will be a matter of who has made the transition from Wimbledon’s grass best in a bid to dethrone defending champion Gael Monfils.
“It’s always a little bit tricky for me on the US hard courts because they’re a little bit fast so there are some adjustments to do,” Thiem said. “Most of the players here, including me, haven’t played for quite a long time. The last time we played was on grass so it’s going to be tricky for everybody.
“For us players it’s not that great because we have a lot of tough matches. But for the crowd it’s amazing to have such a strong field in Washington.”

While Roger Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Stan Wawrinka have dominated the big events in recent years, Thiem is in rare company, having posted victories over each of his more-decorated rivals. He is touted as among the next big things to shake up the dominance at the top end of the men’s game, but he is under no illusion at the difficulty of breaking into the Top 5 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
“They’re really special. It’s very unusual that you have four players like this in one generation,” Thiem said. “I think it’s getting better for the younger players. There are some tournaments where we have a breakthrough against them but during the Grand Slams or the Masters 1000s we usually have to beat two of the big four guys in a row, which is a very tough thing to achieve.”
Germany’s NextGenATP star Alexander Zverev is the other name most mentioned in the same breath as the Austrian. Under the guidance of coach Gunter Bresnik, Thiem remains grounded, however, aware of the hard slog ahead.
“Of course, it’s nice to hear but I think we still have to win a lot of matches, a lot of titles to deserve to be called the next big things in tennis,” Thiem said. “All the other players are still too dominant. It’s nice to hear that but still I think it’s still really far away for both of us.”

Q. Difficult match against a very beloved opponent. Can you talk about playing someone like DelPo. Do you think crowd noise had any factor in the match for you?
DOMINIC THIEM: Well, I mean, of course the crowd was on his side. But it was a great atmosphere. I mean, we're not playing every day in an atmosphere like this. I was enjoying it actually. I mean, the crowd was not unfair at all. So it was fine. The crowd didn't affect the result of the match.
Q. When did you sense you were trouble in this match, because the first two sets went pretty easily for you?
DOMINIC THIEM: Well, I mean, I knew that it's not going to go all the way like this because if he felt really bad, he would have retired for sure. So I knew I had to be there all the way.
I mean, I wasn't really affected by the easy first two sets. I knew that I have to maintain my level. Of course, the third set was bad. I mean, I played some really bad minutes. It was a great match I think, set four and set five. Obviously for the better end for him.
Q. Were you nervous when you served for the match and were broken after having a few match points?
DOMINIC THIEM: No, I was not nervous at all. I was nervous in the beginning, in the first game, yes. I mean, I still know the points, of course, when I served out. It was not that I would make something really different now if I would have the opportunity again.
He played some good shots. One ball was on the net cord, so it was a little bit unlucky, as well. It was not because of the nerves when I served out.
Q. Talk about DelPo's forehand. Power, flat, fast. Does it get you on the defensive?
DOMINIC THIEM: Yeah, I mean, it's no big secret that it's one of the best or maybe the best forehand in the game. Especially on little bit quicker surfaces, it's extremely tough to play.
Q. Why do you suppose people love him so much? They seem to love him everywhere.
DOMINIC THIEM: Well, for sure there were many Argentinians in the crowd, obviously. Some different reasons. Because of his success. Because he came back after really bad injuries. Yeah, he has very attractive game. No surprise that people like him.
Q. What do you think you learned from this experience today about yourself and about your opponent?
DOMINIC THIEM: Well, I mean, if I would have thought a lot about his shape in the first two sets, then I would say that maybe I shouldn't do it the next time. But I knew if he continues to play, then he has to feel better or he has to try it. Obviously set four and five, he was playing completely normal.
I don't know what to learn from this game because I think what you think is that maybe I was taking it too easy, but it was not that case.
Q. Are you frustrated by this loss? Is this a match you feel you should have won?
DOMINIC THIEM: I'm really happy about the loss. I cannot wait to play the next tournament now (smiling).
Q. Talk about the atmosphere out there. I'm sure Davis Cup is that way. Aside from Davis Cup, is that a pretty unusual atmosphere?
DOMINIC THIEM: Yeah, it was very loud. It was a great atmosphere. As I said before, obviously way more for him. But still, I mean, I like sports where there's a great atmosphere, so I enjoyed a lot to play out there today.
Q. The same atmosphere that you talked about, did you know as that noise was coming in, was it obvious to you right away that a lot of those fans were rooting for him, and did that mentally affect you at all?
DOMINIC THIEM: It didn't affect me at all. I was really pumped to play in front of a packed Grandstand. I mean, I really liked it. I enjoy more to play in a packed stadium, even if it's more for the opponent, than in front of 500 people where everybody is cheering for me.
Q. Did it appear to you right away they were cheering for him, and did you expect that?
DOMINIC THIEM: I expected it, yes, because it's everywhere like this for him. I mean, well, it was way more for him, but it was not unfair at all.
Q. What is his popularity like in the locker room? Is he well loved in the locker room?
DOMINIC THIEM: I mean, I don't really know. I think, yes. I think he never did something wrong or something bad to anybody. He's like everybody else.

Thomas Muster: 'Thiem can win Majors and become world no. 1'

Thomas Muster has predicted some great successes for Dominic Thiem in the future. The Austrian player showed his potential this year especially on clay, reaching the finals in Barcelona and Madrid, and the semi-finals in Rome and French Open.

'He is fourth in the ATP Race, and anyone who is fourth can be no. 1 too,' Muster told Laola.

'He can win one or more Majors, probably Roland Garros. He needs to develop his game, he may not be consistent but he is still young.' Actually, out of 3,715 points Thiem earned this year, 2,150 came during the clay season.

Thiem never reached beyond the fourth round in the other three Majors. Muster also described the 24-year-old more as a hard worker rather than a talented player. 'It's not a shame, anyway for me it's impossible to be at that level without being talented.

They often said me that who runs and grinds is not talented, but it's not like this.' This year, Thiem played fewer events than the past but he added Davis Cup to his schedule. 'I think that, playing the Davis Cup, his popularity in Austria got bigger.

If he continues to be successful and makes himself available for Davis Cup, he can be even more famous,' Muster added

Thiem Qualifies For Nitto ATP Finals

Dominic Thiem has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 12-19 November at The O2 in London, for a second successive year as a result of Friday’s quarter-finals at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Thiem, who is currently No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, joins Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev in the 2017 field, leaving four places up for grabs with four weeks to go until the prestigious season-ending tournament.
"I am very proud to have qualified again this year,” said Thiem. “It is not easy to qualify once but even more so to repeat the following year. I look forward to competing with the best players in the world at The O2."

The 24-year-old Thiem is the first Austrian singles player to qualify for multiple season finales since former World No. 1 Thomas Muster competed in the 1990, 1995-97 events. Last year at the Nitto ATP Finals, Thiem compiled a 1-2 record in round-robin group play.
Thiem, who is one of the most-travelled players on the ATP World Tour – competing in 24 tournaments in 2017 (46-23 match record), has lifted one trophy this year at the Rio Open presented by Claro in Rio de Janeiro (d. Carreno Busta) and has finished runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Nadal), an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, and at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (l. to Nadal). Coached by Günter Bresnik, the right-hander compiled a 24-5 record in clay-court matches in 2017, also advancing to the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year (d. Djokovic in QFs, l. to Nadal) and at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome (d. Nadal in QFs, l. to Djokovic in SFs).
Three doubles teams — Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus, and Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan — also clinched their spots for the elite eight-team doubles field after the conclusion of Friday’s play at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai.
