First moment I realised I loved tennis
Maybe when I was 3 or 4. My dad was a tennis coach... I would go almost every day with him because I just liked it. No one was really pushing me. I wanted it.
First coach and most important lesson he/she taught me
My father... To always fight. I am trying to be a fighter. Sometimes I give up too early but it's the most important thing.
First pinch-me moment on the ATP World Tour
I would say playing Roger Federer two years ago at Roland Garros. For me it was like a dream come true. He was my idol and I was dreaming of playing him. Then, in just 20 days, I played him at Roland Garros centre court, and then Wimbledon centre court.
After the second time, I said, “That's enough. That's enough. I don't need any more.. I wanted once but not that many”... Playing Wimbledon centre court against Roger, it was an amazing feeling. The first one at Roland Garros, I was playing really good. It was a good fight. At Wimbledon, I didn't really have a chance. But playing against Roger there, it's like his home.
I remember getting into the court. I was the first who got on the court. I got a big applause but then Roger when he got in, he got 10 times more applause. And after my applause, I thought no applause could be bigger. And his was 10 times bigger, and I was thinking, “OK, that's enough.”

First autograph or photo you got?
It was when I was maybe 14 or 15. I know I was really young but sometimes some people think, “Maybe he's going to be a good player. So I have to get his autograph.” I was playing at the European championships.
First celebrity crush?
One of them is Nicole Scherzinger. She was when I was really young [between 12 and 15 years old]. I know she is now with [Grigor] Dimitrov. That's nice. Ha, ha.
First pet?
Turtle. She was with us just for four months, and then she died. Three years ago, together with my girlfriend, I bought a dog, and then we bought another dog so we have two dogs called Floky (3) and Abba (1)... Miniature Schnauzers.
First time you flew first class?
Three years ago... When I won qualies and played third round of the Australian Open. That was a big week for me. So on the way back, I was flying first class... I had a flight with the economy class and I just took an upgrade. I said, “I got some good money, I want to enjoy this”... First class is so much different to economy class. Unfortunately you are not able to afford it every time you're traveling but for those longer flights, it really pays off to take first class... A lot of food, also a lot of sleep, a lot of good sleep, actually. I think getting first class is important because you feel like you're in a bed. You can sleep a lot. Every time I take first class, I sleep about 80 per cent of the flight.

Internationaux de Tennis de Blois (Blois, France): Top seed Damir Dzumhur made quick work of local favourite Calvin Hemery in the Blois final, claiming his seventh ATP Challenger Tour title with a 6-1, 6-3 win in just 68 minutes. It was a strong week for Dzumhur, who stopped the breakout run of Lyon winner Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round, followed by a straight-set win over fourth seed Henri Laaksonen in the semis. Laaksonen was looking to enter the Top 100 for the first time with a win. Dzumhur rises 11 spots to No. 83 in the Emirates ATP Rankings with his first title in nearly two years.

A Change In Approach Leads To A Change In Fortune For Dzumhur

Dzumhur's hard-court success has led to mid-season revival
It’s hard to believe, but just three months ago Damir Dzumhur was fighting just to stay in the Top 100. This week, already at a career-high No. 55 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and set to compete in the St. Petersburg Open quarter-finals Friday, the 25-year-old from Bosnia & Herzegovina is knocking on the door of the Top 50.
His impending breakthrough is reward for a stellar eight-week stretch, underpinned by an enhanced fitness regimen, that included a run to the semi-finals in Los Cabos and his first tour-level final in Winston-Salem.
It’s been a heartening comeback for Dzumhur, who grew up playing on clay but endured a rough European clay-court season this year, robbing him of the momentum he built on hard courts earlier in the year, which included a win over Stan Wawrinka in Dubai.
“I expected to do well on clay; I trained on clay but the results weren’t showing,” Dzumhur said. “I was playing without confidence. After one or two losses in a row you think about it a lot; it gets into your head.”
Out of form and with doubt setting in, Dzumhur made a strategic move to head west after another first-round loss on the dirt — this time in Hamburg — and try his luck in North America.
The impact was immediate: In his first tournament on hard courts since the Miami Open in March, Dzumhur reached the semi-finals of the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Mifel Open in Los Cabos, Mexico. One week later on green clay, he battled his way to the final of the Miles Open at La Bocha Challenger in Santo Domingo. The Bosnian then followed that performance with five straight singles victories at the Winston-Salem Open to reach the first ATP 250 final of his career.
“I made a good decision to play the tournaments I entered,” Dzumhur said of his productive summer swing. “Sometimes you have to choose the right tournaments for you at the time. That doesn’t guarantee success, but it helps."
By the time Dzumhur hit New York in late August, the slump of early-round losses was behind him. In fact, Dzumhur saw his US Open third-round loss to eventual quarter-finalist and Next Gen ATP player Andrey Rublev as a failure to meet his own, now loftier expectations.
“Playing the third round at any Grand Slam is a big deal; I was looking forward to good results at Slams this year but still I was a little disappointed I didn’t make it through to the fourth [round] because I played well,” Dzumhur said. “But overall I’ve been very happy with performances over the last two months.”
Changes of surfaces and locales aren’t the only factors in Dzumhur’s surge in success. The Sarajevo native has dedicated ample time off the court to being more robust in hopes of boosting his level of play and dealing with the rigours that come with competing against taller, naturally stronger players week after week.
“I’ve worked a lot on my fitness the last two weeks,” Dzumhur said. “It was one of my goals even before 2017, to work on my endurance. I didn’t play that well during the clay-court swing so I took some time then to work on my fitness as well.
“I’m not a tall guy so I try to mix up my serve, my shots. I feel like i can run and return very well, and when my serve is working, I play a lot better. I try to stay in long points and make my opponent nervous.”
Being in peak physical condition is something Dzumhur hopes will pay off not just in the immediate future but also in the coming weeks and months as he deals with the demands of a busy schedule.
“There are seven weeks left and I’ve decided to play all of them,” Dzumhur said. “I’m not tired, I’m hungry for more solid results. I might skip one of the weeks if I have good results the previous week. I’ll be in Beijing (China Open), Shanghai (Shanghai Rolex Masters), go back to Moscow (VTB Kremlin Cup) and possibly Paris [Rolex Paris Masters].
“I’m having a good time this year. It’s a busy schedule, lots of tournaments, but if you feel good at the end of the year, why not [play]?
With two victories already this week in St. Petersburg, the 25-year-old is on the cusp of reaching the Top 50 for the first time in his career. Still, Dzumhur sees room to grow and improvements that can be made if he’s to catapult himself closer to a Top-30 ranking in 2018.
“I want to keep the momentum going to finish the year and to start next year strong,” Dzumhur said. “I want to make my fitness even better and work on my serve. I know it will be tough, but I’d like to be closer to the Top 30 next year.”

Dzumhur Clinches First ATP Crown In St. Petersburg

Damir Dzumhur captured his first ATP World Tour title on Sunday as he completed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback victory over Fabio Fognini in the final of the St. Petersburg Open.
The Sarajevo native is the first player from Bosnia and Herzegovina to win an ATP World Tour singles title. Hot on the heels of Peter Gojowczyk’s victory at the Moselle Open in Metz (read more), Dzumhur is the seventh first-time champion on the ATP World Tour this season.
"I was very nervous today, even though it was my second final. I was very nervous at the start," said Dzumhur. "I couldn't find my best rhythm, couldn't find my best game. But the experience of playing one final already helped me a lot and in the end I won. In the end I found my game and played good. It was the best day of my life."
The 25-year-old Dzumhur has gone 15-3 in tour-level matches since 31 July in a career-best run that will see him move to around No. 40 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday, making him the first player from Bosnia and Herzegovina to break the Top 50. Dzumhur received 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $178,480 in prize money.

Coming into St. Petersburg, Dzumhur had been on a strong run of form that saw him make the semi-finals in Los Cabos (l. to Querrey), reach his first ATP World Tour final in Winston-Salem (l. to Bautista Agut) and make the third round of the US Open (l. to Rublev).
Dzumhur overturned a 0-2 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Fognini as he upset the third-seeded Italian in one hour and 54 minutes. Fognini had battled into his 14th ATP World Tour final after saving two match points against Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-finals, and strolled to the first set against Dzumhur with two breaks of serve.
But the tide turned against the Italian from 4-4 in the second set as Dzumhur seized the initiative with a run of four straight games to level the match and break at the start of the third set. A second break for Dzumhur in the seventh game sealed victory for the right-hander.
"In the second set I started to serve better," said Dzumhur. "After one break (at 2-2 in the second set), he broke me back. But I knew that I could break him again and I was returning better. That first break was very important for the whole match."
The 30-year-old Fognini had been bidding to win his second ATP World Tour of the season, following victory on clay in Gstaad in July (d. Hanfmann). The Italian drops to a 5-9 record in finals, having also finished runner-up in the 2012 edition of the St. Petersburg Open (l. to Klizan).

Sixth seed Damir Dzumhur caused the upset of the tournament when he beat World No. 4 Alexander Zverev, 6-4, 7-5 in 90 minutes.

Despite falling behind a break in both sets, Dzumhur was undeterred. After the German led 2-0 in the opening set, he won six of the next eight games to gain the lead. In the second set, Dzumhur overcame a larger 1-4 deficit to win six of the next seven games and with it, the match. The 25 year old was opportunistic, breaking Zverev on four of his seven opportunities.

Dzumhur, who won last week in St. Petersburg, is in-form, having now won eight matches in a row, and 16 of his last 19 since reaching the Los Cabos semi-finals in August. The World No. 40 will reach a career-high in the Emirates ATP Rankings next week.

Dzumhur Emerges From Historic Moscow Semi-final

Dzumhur seeks his second ATP World Tour title
It was a historic day at the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow, with two Bosnians playing in the semi-final of an ATP World Tour event for the first time.
But it was sixth seed Damir Dzumhur who continued his good play with a 6-0, 7-6(9) victory over qualifier Mirza Basic, his best friend, who had not reached a tour-level quarter-final before this week.
“It means a lot for us. It means a lot for Bosnian tennis. It means a lot for Bosnian people,” Dzumhur said. “I think back home in Bosnia everyone was watching us today. Some people were probably for cheering for him, some for me, but I think most of the people were just enjoying the tennis, especially in the second set when Mirza played very good tennis.”
For Dzumhur, No. 38 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, it will be his second final on Russian soil in the span of a month after claiming his maiden trophy at the St. Petersburg Open in September. He is projected to climb to a career-high ranking of at least No. 33 by making the final.
At the beginning of the semi-final, it appeared that the higher-ranked player would cruise. Dzumhur lost the first two points of the match on his own serve, but would go on to speed through the opening set in 22 minutes, facing just two break points in the fifth game.
“Mirza was tight, I could feel that. He was nervous and I used that in the start after getting a 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 lead. I knew that it was going to be an easy set, but the second one is not going to be easy because you cannot have two easy sets against a guy like Mirza,” Dzumhur said. “When he’s serving good, when he’s in the zone, he’s very dangerous and that’s what he showed in the second set.”
Basic, World No. 209 played far better than his ranking in the second set, holding serve throughout to keep the match close. At 5-6, he saved eight match points on his serve in a 28-point game to force a tie-break.
“I just couldn’t finish it because he was either playing an amazing serve or a good forehand, good volley,” Dzumhur said. “After a few match points when you don’t use it, don’t finish, you get a little tight, you get a little bit nervous... I’m sure that if we went to a third set he’d have the advantage. He’d have confidence, I would be down because I didn’t use so many match points and so I knew that I had to finish in two sets. Luckily for me I finished it and I’m in the final.”
Dzumhur failed to convert two more match points in the tie-break, and saved two set points against him, but ultimately closed Basic out in straight sets.
The 25-year-old will play third seed Adrian Mannarino or Ricardas Berankis in the final, but for now is enjoying what was a special day for his nation.
“Definitely before we started the tournament we couldn’t imagine that we would play in the semis here in Moscow,” Dzumhur admitted. “That’s a huge thing for Bosnian tennis. That’s a huge thing for both of us and especially for Mirza, his first semis....I don’t feel good because I beat my best friend, Mirza, but one of us had to go to the final and I would say the same if I lost.”
