Q. When did you sense you might be in some trouble? When were things not working for you?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, I think my energy was missing a little bit today. From yesterday I felt already a little bit, you know, like, tired, I think is the best word. And today during the match, and after the match, I'm like, It's a tough day today. I feel empty a little bit, and I start to be sick. But I think it was a little bit of combination. I think she played great, with no fear. She was trying a lot of stuff that was working. My energy was not really there. I was trying, but didn't work at all.

Q. How tough is it to be the player being chased rather than the player trying to pull off the upsets?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: I think it's part of being at the top level. I would not change that. I know every time I step on the court, well, they want to beat me so much. They all kind of loose because they don't have nothing to lose. But I like that. It makes me in a good situation. Hopefully I can keep it like this.
Q. Was there a particular reason why you felt empty today? Did you feel like that coming into the tournament, or just today in particular?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, a little bit also to start after playing French Open, after trying Mallorca, which was too early to start, then practicing hard to come here. I think was a little bit too much maybe.
I think at some point my energy was going down. So I guess today was the day where I felt it right away. I just have to recover a little bit and, you know, get my energy back, then be good again.
Q. Do you think the expectation that's been put upon your shoulders, having won the French, coming here as No. 2, has that added a bit more pressure to you?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: No, not pressure. I think for sure more expectations from other people. But honestly, for me, I just had very clear it was going to be a rough tournament for me after winning a Grand Slam and coming here. Everybody, you know, like, looking at me.
Not really. I know all the matches are very tough. Nothing is going to happen if I lose today. It's normal. It's part of the game. Hopefully I lose less matches. But there is not any drama, so...
Q. What were you most surprised about today regarding your own performance?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: I was surprised well, not really surprised. I felt this before, when you are practicing hard, playing, playing, playing, one day suddenly your energy goes down. I'm not surprised.
Obviously, you always try to avoid these kind of moments where you're going, I need a day to recover.
Well, I had to play today. I went to the court. I didn't find it. But at least I was there looking for a chance.
Q. What do you think you might learn from today?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, what I'm going to learn? I'm going to learn that you really need to concentrate on how to recover, and don't reach a moment where your energy is too low, especially to play a Grand Slam, and to face opponents that, hey, they're good, they're here, they want to beat you so much. You got to be ready. You cannot go out there not at your best.
Q. You said after the French Open, it was amazing to think that Nadal had won nine of them. Now that you've won that and come here, how difficult does it feel to have to recover and get back to optimum level so fast?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: It is very difficult. You know, I'm just experience a lot of things so fast. It's my first time after doing a great result, coming to another Grand Slam. So I'm trying to discover how I'm going to feel, how do I have to go on court, how do I have to rest more.
I think it's great. Now I'm touching more a little bit all these great players, you know, that they're amazing, that they're winning a lot of Grand Slams. But, hey, that's what it takes, so I got to be ready.
Q. Would you change your preparation between the French Open and Wimbledon in any way next year? Do you think you might change something to make it easier for you not to get so tired?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: I think I will have to rest more, not, you know, keep practicing the same hard to prepare another Grand Slam because it's very fast. I think I will have to take more careful those days where you have to rest.
Even though you want to play, I don't want to miss a day, but sometimes it's better to rest because it's going to make you play better. You don't think, like, practicing 10 hours a day is going to make you play better after you don't have energy.
Q. Having come from the highs of the experience of Paris to the low of what has happened today, that must be quite an emotional journey you've been on. How can you cope with that journey?
GARBINE MUGURUZA: It's hard. It's interesting. I've been through a lot of stages, and it's only half of the year. I'm just dealing with it, honestly. I think it's hard. I'm doing my way, trying to prepare every match, trying to be focused every practice. One day it's going to go my way, another day no. Hopefully my consistency will improve and I'll be able to be deep in all the tournaments.

Garbine Muguruza: 'I have more confidence thanks to Conchita Martinez'

Garbine Muguruza is coached by the Fed Cup captain Conchita Martinez at Wimbledon, as her main coach Sam Sumyk is at home due to family issues. After beating Magdalena Rybarikova 6/1 6/1, the Spaniard spoke about her 45-year-old compatriot. 'I think she’s helping me to deal with the stress of the tournament, because it’s a long tournament.

I’ve been here a while already. So she just knows how to prepare, how to train, what to do. Not that I’m doing something different, honestly. But to have her by my side gives me also this little confidence on having someone that has won before.' Sumyk is not at Wimbledon, but he is still working to make Muguruza get as ready as possible for every match: 'Conchita and Sam are really working together.

They are in contact. Before I do something, they both decided. So that magic is still happening. I think I’m here because I’ve been working not only the last few days, but longer time, getting ready for this kind of moment.

I think a lot of things are clicking also with her and the team this week, so it’s very nice.' Muguruza is the first Spaniard to reach two Wimbledon finals since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1990s. 'All the names that I read on the honours board, I know all of them.

Inspired Muguruza crowned ladies' champion

A champion, said Billie Jean King, is afraid of losing; everyone else is afraid of winning.

With the great pioneer of the women’s game watching from the Royal Box, Garbiñe Muguruza and Venus Williams put on a fearless display of tennis which was as powerful as it was physically resourceful. So much was – justly – said in advance about the 37-year-old American’s extraordinary achievement of reaching her second Grand Slam final of the year; but sometimes in sport, it’s just someone else’s story. Wimbledon 2017 belongs to Muguruza.
This was the Spaniard’s first final in the 13 months since she won Roland Garros last year. She withstood an onslaught from the Venus forehand throughout the first set, and fended off two set points before snatching it herself; and with so much energy expended on that critical first set, Williams could not summon enough to be competitive in the second. With the roof closed for the first time in a ladies' singles final, the No.14 seed took it 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 17 minutes.
A scintillating first set centred on Williams’ need to keep the rallies short, to preserve her energy. How much she will regret in retrospect allowing a break point to pass at 3-3; and how much more that, at 5-4, she held two points to capture that first set, which was so vital to her challenge here. Instead Muguruza - whose own forehand had been erratic all set - did not misfire when her own chance to break arose, and she forced the error.


As she served for the set, the cleanness of the ball striking was accentuated by the greenhouse acoustics, with each stroke a rifle crack. Muguruza's defence was relisient, and her competitive will tougher still. She brought up set point with such an exquisite lob that it merited the title all by itself. Then, just as the match promised so much more, the inexhaustible Venus was abruptly out of gas. Less than half an hour later, the contest was done.
Having plummeted from the world No.5 spot only last month on surrendering her Roland Garros title, Muguruza will bounce right back to that very same ranking as a result of her victory here.
Williams was the oldest finalist since Martina Navratilova 23 years ago. How curious it was that then, as now, an attempt to become the oldest winner of the title since Charlotte Cooper Sterry in 1908 should be stymied by a Spaniard. In 1994 it was Conchita Martinez – and in 2017 she was once again a pivotal influence, having assumed coaching duties for Muguruza at these Championships.
Watching her charge from the customary Centre Court territory of the players’ box, in this match as in others this Fortnight, she could be heard urging on Muguruza with cries of: “Grande!” – not only applause for a literal “big” shot, but more importantly an instruction to continue in that vein. It has worked so well here that only one opponent throughout The Championships has been able to unburden her of a set – Angelique Kerber, in their riveting fourth round encounter.
And yet still Williams’ gigantic feat here cannot be overlooked. The problem when attempting to present her achievements in digestible form is simply this… where on earth to start? Already the owner of so many gasp-making tennis facts, she has grabbed shoals more in this, her 20th Wimbledon and 75th Grand Slam. In this match she was bidding for SW19 victory number 88, in her 16th Grand Slam final; and having been Australian Open runner-up, this was the first time she has reached two Slam finals in a calendar year since her salad days of 2003.
But not for nothing is the Spanish national motto “plus ultra” – literally, further beyond. Watched from the Royal Box by King Juan Carlos de Borbon, who stepped down from the Spanish throne in favour of his son Felipe three years ago, Muguruza saw a Venus forehand sail long, and sank to her knees in tears. The Wimbledon crown is hers. Her reign as champion here has begun.

Conchita Martinez will not extend coaching role with Garbine Muguruza

"The whole two weeks, she's played every point of every single match. That, mentally, is very strong, and you can see players break down with that," Martinez told a small group of journalists. "For me, high intensity when you play a match is very important. She sort of did that. She play relaxed, but with a lot of intensity. Just point by point, I try to tell her, don't think of anything else."

Muguruza's regular coach, Sam Sumyk, was not at the event because his wife is expecting their first child. Martinez, who is the Spanish Davis Cup and Fed Cup captain, will not extend her expanded coaching role beyond this tournament.

"I'm always in contact with every player," she said. "But Sam, her coach, is going to step in now."

Muguruza will climb to No. 5 in the rankings with the victory.

Muguruza was as calm as she was strong in racing to Wimbledon title

LONDON—Garbiñe Muguruza’s 7-5, 6-0 win over Venus Williams in the final here on Saturday was a tale of two matches. One set was taut, tight, tense and rivetingly competitive. The other was a blowout. The dividing line between them was very clear: This title was essentially decided by two mirror-image points at the end of the first set.

Serving at 4-5, Muguruza hit a forehand long and a forehand into the net to go down 15-40—double set point for Venus. Muguruza’s forehand had been shaky at the start, and now it looked like it was going to cost her. On the next point, the Spaniard and the American engaged in the longest rally of the match to that point. Venus, naturally, directed most of her shots toward the Muguruza forehand, but this time the Muguruza forehand held firm. Instead, it was Venus who finally blinked, netting a forehand of her own. Muguruza saved another break point and held for 5-5.

In the next game, it was Venus’ turn to go down 15-40, and it was Muguruza’s turn to test Venus’ forehand in another long rally. Again it was Williams who blinked. She sailed a forehand long, and Muguruza had the first break of the match. It was all she needed. The 23-year-old held for the set and went on to win six more in a row in just 26 minutes.

During those six games, Muguruza’s level stayed high; she made just one unforced error in the second set and didn’t put a foot wrong while galloping down the homestretch. But in the surprise of the day, Venus’ game, which had grown stronger with each match, suddenly vanished without a trace—she struggled just to keep the ball in the court, or within five feet of the lines. Midway through the set, Venus tried to come to the net more. Theoretically, going on the attack was a better idea than staying back and making errors, but Muguruza had the answers. Near the end, Muguruza hit a backhand pass crosscourt at the same time that Venus broke in the other direction. It was a painful symbol of the second set for Williams, who could hardly muster a grunt by the end.

“There’s errors, and you can’t make them,” Venus, still tight-lipped, said afterward when she was asked what had happened. “You can’t make them. I went for some big shots and they didn’t land.”

Venus didn’t reveal much more in her press conference, but in trademark Williams fashion she was able to go out with her head high, and a hopeful note for her sister.

“I tried my best to do what you do,” Venus told Serena through the camera on court. “But I think there’ll be other opportunities.”

If anyone can make them happen, it’s Venus. We know that, even at 37, she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

“She played really well,” Venus said of Muguruza. “I mean, she played top tennis, so I have to give her credit for just playing a better match. I’ve had a great two weeks. I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer.”

Muguruza walked on court with her game face on, and then some. There were no polite smiles from her in the moments before the match started. She had lost the final here two years ago to Serena Williams, but she hadn’t forgotten what Serena had told her that day: You can win this thing. Muguruza had looked to be in winning form since the round of 16 on Monday, when she knocked off No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber.

Leaning in and never hesitating, Muguruza was uncannily accurate with her high-risk attack. She aimed for corners, and that’s exactly where the ball landed. But she didn’t swing mindlessly. When the first set was on the line at 4-5 and she needed to keep her shaky forehand in the court, she dialed back the aggression, stayed steady and won the long rally she needed to win.

“I always come very motivated to the Grand Slams,” Muguruza said. “Since I lost the final here, I wanted to change that. I came thinking, ‘I’m prepared, I feel good.’ During the tournament and the matches, I was feeling better and better.

“I feel incredible to be able to play [Venus] here. Of course I’m nervous because I always dreamed about winning it, but I was composed.”

This is Muguruza’s second major title, and with her win over Serena at the French Open last year, she becomes the first player to beat both of the Williams sisters in Slam finals. Perhaps more remarkable is the fact that, during those 13 months, she has failed to reach another final. Which means it’s too early to make any predictions about Muguruza being the new face of the WTA—she’s not going to play like this every week. What we can say is that, while she doesn’t win often, she has the game and the mentality to win big, and to make the most of her chances when they present themselves. At 23, Muguruza has a Wimbledon and a French Open. With those trophies at home, who needs to be No. 1? Serena herself has always prioritized the Slams over the rankings.

Still, it would be nice to think that Muguruza, who worked for these two weeks with another Spanish Wimbledon champion, Conchita Martinez, could find this level again on a regular basis. Tennis is better when its best players play well, and it’s much better when Muguruza is leaning into her shots, aiming an inch from the line, taking a brave cut and putting the ball right where she wants it to go.

Champions Corner: Muguruza feels victory vibe

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Garbiñe Muguruza came back from the brink at the Western & Southern Open for a remarkable week in which she won her second title of the season. En route to her fifth career title, the 23-year-old saved three match points to defeat Madison Keys in the round of 16, and then got the better of Svetlana Kuznetsova, World No.1 Karolina Pliskova, and World No.2 Simona Halep to win the title.

Muguruza's summer hardcourt season has quickly quieted any questions as to whether the Spaniard was prime for a post-Slam slump, after winning her second major at Wimbledon last month. Since capturing the Wimbledon title, Muguruza has compiled a 9-2 record, making the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic, quarterfinals at the Rogers Cup, and now a triumphant run in Cincinnati.

Is Muguruza the favorite heading into the US Open? Possibly. But first she'll have to banish her Big Apple hex.

WTA Insider sat down with Muguruza after her Cincinnati win to discuss her last six weeks, her improved consistency over the season, and how she plans to get into a New York state of mind.

WTA Insider: No.1 on the Porsche Race to Singapore, No.3 in the rankings, second title of the season, and reigning Wimbledon champion. Not a bad month and a half for you!
Muguruza: No, for sure not! Especially this week, that I managed to survive after these tough matches and play a great match in the final, which is not easy. I'm happy with my American swing so far.

WTA Insider: It seems like you have a great ability to save your best for the end.
Muguruza: Well, I'm not trying to do that. For sure I feel good when I go out there when I have tough matches and big crowds. Since I was a little girl, I feel good when I have these situations. I feel more motivated.

WTA Insider: How important was it for you to get back on court so quickly after Wimbledon?
Muguruza: I think it was important. I was actually looking forward to playing, to keep the vibe. I felt prepared. I didn't want to miss anything.

WTA Insider: Earlier this week you said "Pressure is a pain." How different are you with how you deal with pressure now compared to maybe three years ago?
Muguruza: I think I have a different perspective. Now I work hard and I don't take for granted that it's going to work. So I try not to get that frustrated. Before I was maybe working hard and expecting to have good matches, and they weren't coming. So this time I feel more calm and I think experience helps me go through these tough situations.

WTA Insider: But how do you stop yourself from expecting results when you know that you're putting in the hard work and doing everything right?
Muguruza: It's hard because everyone wants it right now. No one is patient. Everyone wants to win as fast as they can. But I know that if it doesn't happen today, it will happen tomorrow. If I keep working hard and knowing what I have to do, sooner or later it's going to come. That's the tricky part. Waiting for your moment, because it's going to come.

WTA Insider: Much has been made about your big titles this year, but you've also been very consistent. What has made a difference?
Muguruza: I think my medium level is higher than it was before. I like that I give myself chances to play the matches that I want. I always like the semifinals and finals -- everyone loves those rounds -- but you have to get there. I'm happy that I'm going through these first rounds, difficult opponents, and managing to get to the last days of the tournament and then I have chances to win the tournament. Or at least I feel I can do it.

WTA Insider: Is there a moment at a tournament, maybe the quarterfinals or semifinals, where you flip a switch and go from searching for your form to really believing you can win the title?
Muguruza: Honestly, I don't know. I take every match as a final. There's a lot of tournaments you pass the first rounds and almost you get to the final but you don't get. Those first matches are tough. You're playing opponents that maybe you know less. They're difficult as well. This is the most tricky part most times.

WTA Insider: Nick Kyrgios said after he beat Rafael Nadal this week that he doesn't have a problem getting excited for those matches, but playing a qualifier on an outer court at a low-level tournament can be tough. Many top players talk about how tricky those early rounds are.
Muguruza: For sure, there is not final or trophy if you don't dig in those first rounds. Those first rounds are difficult because you're nervous, you have a lot of pressure, maybe you're playing people you don't know and everyone is expecting you to win. So you have to go through these painful situations, as I said before, but for me, I'm happy that I'm improving that and giving myself a chance to be in those last rounds.

WTA Insider: If I remember correctly, the New York vibe isn't exactly your speed. What are you going to try to do to fix that this year?
Muguruza: Honestly, I think I'm going to stop trying to fix it. I'm happy to be in New York. It's a very special place. It takes a lot of energy of course, it's noisy, and it's 24/7, but I'm going to stop thinking about that. I'm just going to go out there and be calm and play as freely as I can. Forget that the last years it didn't go my way. Maybe this year it is my year. Who knows?

WTA Insider: Is part of enjoying New York learning to just accept that it is what it is and you just have to go with the flow?
Muguruza: Yeah, for sure. I'm going to stop trying to think about it. I feel like I'm going to try and not have a lot of expectations with New York. Every time I have a little bit, it holds me a little bit back. I'm just going to go out there from zero. Forget about what happened previous years. It's a new tournament. I'm just going to see what's going to happen this year and that's all.

WTA Insider: Lastly, obviously the attacks in Barcelona this week have been on everyone's mind. You played with a black ribbon on your visor. Do you have a message to send back home?
Muguruza: I just wanted to show that I had them in my mind. There's not a lot of things I can do from here. That's at least something I can do. For me it's terrible because I've been to Las Ramblas so many times and it really shocked me because it's my city. It's just really sad.

Q. How different does it feel to be at the US Open this year as it compares to years past or specifically last year?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Not a big difference. I guess, you know, maybe a more favorite, I guess, or that's -- I don't know, feeling.
Nothing different. I'm happy to be back. Last major of the year. Looking forward to improve my last results.
Q. One of the big stories coming into the tournament is the return of Maria Sharapova. When you think about her game, what do you think of most and what are your thoughts on her being back?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: What I think of her, I think she's a fighter, you know, great attitude, big fight, spirit in the court.
Well, I guess the fans want her back. I guess she -- you know, she will improve the tournament. That's what it feels like.
Q. How do you feel about her being given a wildcard?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, it's once again something really tricky to answer, because I guess when someone has been, you know -- I don't know if it's banned, the word, or, like, out of competition, I think you have to work for it, you know, a little bit to go and play your tournaments and not help that much sometimes, you know. You've got to work hard and deserve it again. I think that's the way.
Q. No fewer than eight women come into this tournament with the possibility of walking out No. 1 at the end. What's that say about the wide-open nature of the tournament? Not just for people like you at the very top but for like the rest of the field.

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, it is going to be a fun tournament, I guess, because there is a lot of movement. A lot of things can happen. I just think it's great. It's great for the fans, for the people who are going to watch who is winning, who's not.
And then there is new names, options, also, so it's interesting.
Q. How different do you feel at the US Open this year compared to last year? I mean, coming off the summer and how you played, are the shoulders more relaxed? Do you feel less pressure? Mentally how are you?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: I don't feel more relaxed. Of course, being in a Grand Slam, doesn't matter what you did before. Is always nervous and excitement.
Like I said before, I don't really feel different. You know, I always come very, like, full of hope here to try to make a good tournament. Even before it didn't really happen, every year, new page and just looking forward to see what happens.
Q. What do you think about the rules changes, quallies, time clock, coaching for women?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, they have to test it. So maybe it's not a bad way to start testing. They can also do it in other events. I don't know. If they want to test it they have to do it somehow, somewhere. It's a good start.
Q. When you won your first Grand Slam, you kind of struggled a little bit after that. After Wimbledon, you have had a good summer since. Are you approaching this any differently? If so, how?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, I'm approaching it as I try to -- the only thing, like, I have to, you know, like win. You know, that's what I want, of course.
But try to be realistic, I guess. Not because I won before a Grand Slam or a tournament or something's going to come here and help me. I'm sure it helps me with my motivation and confidence but after that you have to go out there and play. All these players are playing great. They're going to give you the hardest battle. There is nothing granted.
Q. New York is definitely a different place to play a tournament. What do you make of the city? Do you feel like you have adjusted to it over the years, coming back year after year?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: I think here it's all about the balance, finding a nice spirit of competition and also enjoying a little bit of the city, to not get overwhelmed about the city and what is going on. So that's what I'm looking for. Enjoy, once I get out of the tennis court, try and enjoy the city, because it's very, 24/7 alive. That's how I feel.
And after, be fresh to compete.
Q. Have you found things over the years you like to do each time you're here? Maybe specific routines or places to visit?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: I think walk less and be in the street less, because it's so -- I don't know. Like sometimes I feel like, Oh, there is a shop, like, three blocks, and three blocks is amazing, long, and so exhausted. So I don't know.
Q. How would you describe yourself as a hard court player right now?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, I think it's very similar to other surface, you know. I think my game is quite similar. You know, I'm a very aggressive player. Try to fear less as possible and getting the control, so I think hard court also helps me in that way.
Q. And your degree of confidence on hard court right now versus any time in your career?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Honestly, not especially confident. I think I had good tournaments in a row, which is great for me, but I had good results also in hard court, so I'm not that surprised that I can play in hard court. I don't know.
Q. You're obviously working with Conchita during Wimbledon. Wondering if she's a part of your team along with Sam this slam as well?
GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: No. She's not going to come here, but I guess we will be in touch. You know, I know it was incredible run at Wimbledon but it was something more at Wimbledon.
I thought about it. I'm, like, Just in case, come back (smiling).
Q. Good luck charm?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Yeah, she is. For now she's like invincible right now. She never lost with me.
Q. Was this her decision or your decision?

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: To not come?
Q. Yeah.

GARBIÑE MUGURUZA: Well, I think my decision with my team. You know, now I have my full team here. Yeah, that was kind of... That's it, yeah.
