Carreno Busta Rallies Past Ruud, Sets Thiem Final In Rio

It took nearly two hours and an impressive comeback, but Pablo Carreno Busta would not be denied his place in the final at the Rio Open presented by Claro, dismissing Casper Ruud on Saturday evening. Carreno Busta withstood a stern test from the Norwegian teen, storming back from a set and a break down and saving one match point to prevail 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.
The Spaniard advanced to his fifth ATP World Tour final and first at the 500 level, setting a clash against World No. 8 Dominic Thiem. Ruud, meanwhile, saw his fairytale week in Rio de Janeiro come to a close after claiming his first tour-level match wins to reach the final four.

The Norwegian came out firing at the Jockey Club Brasiliero. Impregnable off the ground in the early stages, the 18 year old refused to be rattled by the occasion of his first ATP World Tour semi-final, using his agility and forehand to dictate play for over a set and a half. But after falling behind 6-2, 4-2, Carreno Busta took his game to the next level, using his experience to survive the encounter. Ruud's mettle was put to the test in the ninth game, surviving three break points for a 14-minute hold of serve, but Carreno Busta stayed the course, saving a match point while serving down 5-4. He would break to love for 6-5 and reeled off 11 of the last 12 games to earn a spot in the final opposite Thiem.

World No. 208 Ruud is projected to soar to a career-high Top 140 spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday. With his run to the semis, he became the youngest semi-finalist on the ATP World Tour since Borna Coric in Basel 2014 and the lowest-ranked player to reach a 500-level semi-final since World No. 285 Alexander Zverev in Hamburg earlier that year. Ruud's father Christian remains the only Norwegian to reach an ATP World Tour final, finishing runner-up in Bastad in 1995.

Earlier in the day, Thiem made quick work of Albert Ramos-Vinolas, prevailing 6-1, 6-4 to seal his place in his 11th ATP World Tour title match.
"I'm really happy this week," said Thiem. "I raised my game with every match. I'm happy to be back on clay in general, and I honestly didn't expect the transition to go so fast. I think I'm a better player than I was last year, so we'll see how the final will go tomorrow."
The Austrian has proven that his game translates on all surfaces and one week after competing on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam, he has had little trouble adapting to the conditions in Rio de Janeiro. The second seed has yet to drop a set all week on the South American clay, racing to a 6-1 lead in Saturday's first semi-final behind a pair of quick breaks. He was relentless from the baseline, striking winners off both wings with conviction and forcing Ramos-Vinolas into uncomfortable positions.
Thiem would secure the immediate advantage in the first game of the second set and while the Spaniard would draw level with a break back for 4-4, he reinstated the lead in the next game and served it out after one hour and 22 minutes. He fired 21 winners and benefited from 32 unforced errors.
The 23 year old will be appearing in the final of a third different tournament on the Latin American Golden Swing, having lifted the trophy in both Buenos Aires and Acapulco last year. He will square off against Carreno Busta for the sixth time, owning a 5-1 edge in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. They most recently met in the 2016 US Open third round, with Thiem rallying from a set down to advance in four.

Cuevas/Carreno Busta Dethrone Colombian Power In Rio

Spanish-Uruguayan duo capture first team title
Pablo Carreno Busta wishes every day on the ATP World Tour would be like Saturday in Rio de Janeiro. Hours after completing a stunning comeback to reach the singles final, the Spaniard clinched the Rio Open presented by Claro doubles title with Pablo Cuevas.
Carreno Busta and Cuevas edged defending champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 in one hour and 29 minutes. The Colombian Power looked to be on their way to a comeback of their own after forcing a Match Tie-break from a set and a break down. But the Spanish-Uruguayan duo would have the last laugh, taking the title on their first championship point.
“I’m very happy," said Carreno Busta. "It’s always very special to win a title even if it’s a doubles one. It’s very important. I’m sure it’s going to help me tomorrow for my singles final.”

The third-seeded champions earn $94,800 in prize money and 500 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points. Cuevas, the 2016 singles titlist in Rio de Janeiro, won his sixth tour-level doubles crown and first in two years. Carreno Busta, who will face Dominic Thiem in Sunday's singles final, notched his third doubles title with a third different partner.
“We started very well," said Cuevas. "In the second set we were a break up, but they started playing better and the Match Tie-break was very close. But in the end we were able to turn it around and win the title.”
Cabal and Farah, meanwhile, were bidding to extend their doubles dynasty at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, having lifted the trophy in both 2014 and 2016. Champions at last week's Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, they remain in search of their 10th ATP World Tour team title. The Colombians split $46,410 in prize money and 300 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points.

What makes the Masters 1000s special?
For me, if you make it to the draw and compete, it means that you are part of the best of the world and that makes it special.
Which is your favourite Masters 1000 tournament and why?
I’ll probably go with [the BNP Paribas Open in] Indian Wells. The facilities are simply spectacular.

Which Masters 1000 would you most want to win and why?
I wouldn’t mind winning any of them, to be honest. Any of the nine would be just great, but if I had to pick one, I’d go with the Mutua Madrid Open, because it’s in Spain and I would play at home.
Your favourite Masters 1000 memory?
Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2014 was the most special one for me. I won my first Masters 1000 match there and it’s where I’ve played some of my best tennis. I remember that I beat Gael Monfils in one of my most important wins so far.

What is your dream match at a Masters 1000 (who would you play & at which tournament)?
I would love to beat Rafael Nadal in Madrid. Championship match, that would be a dream.
When did you first watch a Masters 1000 tournament on TV or in person?
It was in person. I don’t remember the year, but I know for sure it was in Madrid when it was played on hard courts. I saw Andre Agassi, the only time I saw him live.
Which Masters 1000 host city is your favourite and why?
Monte-Carlo. I live in Barcelona and it’s one of the closest M1000 we have. But I also love the fact that it’s a complete different city, with glamour, luxury everywhere… Just completely different to everywhere else.

Carreno Busta Back From The Brink For SF Spot

Pablo Carreno Busta is through to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final after saving two match points to deny Pablo Cuevas 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(4) at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday.

The Spaniard ended Cuevas' seven-match winning run with victory in two hours and five minutes, avenging his defeat to the Uruguayan in the Sao Paulo semi-finals just under two weeks ago.
"It's an amazing feeling," said Carreno Busta. "It's my first time in the semifinal in a Masters 1000. This tournament is one of the best tournaments in the year and maybe one of the tougher, because all the people is playing here. So I think it's a really great result for me."

Carreno Busta goes on to face either third seed Stan Wawrinka or eighth seed Dominic Thiem, whom he lost to in the Rio de Janeiro final on clay last month.

Cuevas could not have put any more into his match point opportunities. The Uruguayan, who was on a hot run of form after winning the Sao Paulo title (d. Ramos-Vinolas), threw himself into a dive backhand on his first one, when leading 30/40 on Carreno Busta’s serve in the 10th game. Carreno Busta put away the ensuing smash, before Cuevas was treated for bleeding fingers and knees.

The 31-year-old Cuevas was then denied a second chance at 30/40 on Carreno Busta’s serve in the 11th game, as his Spanish opponent dig out a blistering return of serve before salvaging the point. It would be Cuevas’ final opportunity as Carreno Busta went on to seize his chance in the tie-break, converting his first match point.

The 25-year-old Carreno Busta had never before been past the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament.
"It was a tough match," said Carreno Busta. "Always with Pablo I need to be very focused on my game, very aggressive, because his second serve bounces a lot. So I need to be aggressive and I need to dominate the points, because he's really dangerous with his forehand."
