While the ATP first staged a tournament in Qatar in 1993, the Qatar Tennis Federation did not launch what is now known as the Qatar Total Open in Doha in 2001 as the popularity of women's sports was starting to take off in the country. Doha's ultra-modern Khalifa International Tennis Complex also hosted the season-ending WTA Championships from 2008 to 2010.

Qatar Total Open champions include WTA greats such as Justine Henin, Martina Hingis and Monica Seles, as well as two-time winners Victoria Azarenka, Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova.

The capital of Qatar, Doha is the country's cultural, commercial and financial center.

DUBAI DUTY FREE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Launched as a men's tournament in 1993, what is now known as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships became a joint event in 2001 and that same year the players voted it as the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year, an honor it was awarded again the following year.

The tournament is staged at the picturesque Aviation Club, which features the immensely popular Irish Village pub and an extensive range of recreational and entertainment facilities including a gym and spa. The Dubai Tennis Stadium also serves as a leading concert venue.

Justine Henin has the tournament record with four titles followed by Venus Williams with three. Other former champions include WTA superstars Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, Martina Hingis, Petra Kvitova, Amélie Mauresmo and Caroline Wozniacki. Liezel Huber has the most doubles titles in Dubai history with five.

Dubai Duty Free is the event owner, organizer and title sponsor. A WTA sponsor since 2004, its partnership has been marked by leadership and innovation, including sponsoring the first Middle East tournament to award equal prize money and being a strong supporter of the growth of women's tennis in the region.

KERBER DESCENDS ON DOHA: 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE QATAR TOTAL OPEN

The WTA tour turns from a thrilling Aussie summer to a compelling fortnight in the Middle East, as US Open champion Angelique Kerber and runner-up Karolina Pliskova are the Top 2 seeds at the upcoming Qatar Total Open.

What do you need to know about the first leg of the Middle East Swing?

1. The 2017 Doha winner will join an illustrious list of champions.
With defending champion Carla Suárez Navarro forced to withdraw due to injury, the draw guarantees a new champion from the field of 28 women. Starting in 2001, Qatar Total Open's honor roll boasts seven players who won - or went on to win - Grand Slam titles, and five World No.1s.

2. Kerber begins her quest to reclaim No.1.
Kerber fell from the top spot after Serena Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, but all is not lost for the German. Should she reach the final in Doha, she could return to No.1 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where she'd also have to reach the final. With a bye in the first round, the 2014 runner-up will open against either Irina-Camelia Begu or Daria Kasatkina, who upset her at the Apia International Sydney.

3. Pliskova rides Fed Cup victories into Doha.
Pilskova began 2017 riding a nine-match winning streak through the Brisbane International and into the quarterfinals in Melbourne. The Czech shook off the surprise loss to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni with a dominating display over Fed Cup weekend, where she earned wins over Lara Arruabarrena and, most impressively, a 60-minute romp past reigning French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza. Seeded second in Doha, Pliskova opens against either a qualifier or Caroline Garcia.

4. Can Cibulkova shake off Aussie disappointment?
Dominika Cibulkova ended 2016 on a career-high, winning the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, but the World No.5 fell before the second week in Australia to an inspired Ekaterina Makarova. Fresh off a run to the semifinals of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, the Slovak is the No.3 seed in Doha, and will begin her week against either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or a qualifier, with No.8 seed Barbora Strycova looming in the last eight.

5. Will Wozniacki renew her rivalry with Radwanska in Doha?
The Asian Swing was dominated by the head-to-head between Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki. The resurgent Dane upset Radwanska en route to the Toray Pan Pacific Open title but the Pole got the better of Wozniacki in Wuhan and Beijing. Should the former No.1 beat Kiki Bertens, she'll face the No.4 seed in the second round.

6. Muguruza aims for Fed Cup revenge.
Muguruza shakes off a tough defeat against Pliskova and has a chance to avange the loss in Doha, as they're projected to meet in the quarterfinals. Standing in her way is wildcard Cagla Buyukakcay, who made her WTA breakthrough at this event last year - upsetting Lucie Safarova en route to the third round.

7. Fed Cup heroes face off.
After a long Fed Cup weekend, plenty of players will aim to take that momentum into the Middle East. One of the must-watch first rounds includes Yulia Putintseva, who reached her first WTA final in St. Petersburg and helped Kazakhstan into World Group II Play-Offs, and No.7 seed Timea Bacsinszky, who led Switzerland into the World Group I semifinals.

8. Hingis unveils new partnership in doubles.
Martina Hingis began the 2017 season continuing her partnership with CoCo Vandeweghe, but the Swiss Miss comes to Doha with Chan Yung-Jan as top seeds. Chan made two straight WTA Finals with sister Hao-Ching, and can certainly fulfill the power dynamic the cerebral Swiss requires in a doubles partner. The pair play their first match against Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson.

9. Hlavackova & Peng seek to maintain Melbourne momentum.
Speaking of Chan Hao-Ching, the Taiwanese doubles star begins her new partnership with Christina McHale. The pair will have their work cut out for them against No.3 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Peng Shuai. The Czech/Chinese duo renewed their partnership at the start of 2017 and roared into the Australian Open final, narrrowly falling to World No.1 Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova.

10. Mirza & Strycova soldier on.
Fresh off her excellent Fed Cup weekend - in which she pushed Muguruza to three sets and ousted Arruabarrena to clinch victory for the Czechs - Barbora Strycova reunites with Sania Mirza as the No.2 seeds in Doha. As they remain together, they face Raquel Atawo and Xu Yi-Fan, one of 2017's newer pairs, in the first round.

Duże opóźnienia w Doha, dziewczyny grają dziś po 2 razy. Na szczęście Wozniacki szybko odprawiła Radwańską, mało widowiskowy ten mecz,troszkę ofensywniejsza Dunka, ale generalnie pusz z obu stron. Statystyki niby ładne, obie ponad 20 winnerów, ale jakoś mało było naprawdę efektownych piłek.

Kerber coś się nie może rozkręcić w tym sezonie, kolejna porażka, tym razem z Kasatkiną. Muguruza, jak wyżej - odesłała Ją Chinka (tych meczów nie widziałem, tylko popatrzyłem na wyniki).

Radwańska gorzej i gorzej gra. Teraz nie będzie się jak zasłonić zamętem Navratilovej, to może za jakiś rok kto inny zasiądzie na ławce trenerskiej i wróci ta dyspozycja do tego co było w końcówce 2015.

Z jej przebiegiem to już raczej nie ma do czego wracać. To znaczy, może od czasu do czasu wyskoczyć znikąd z dobrym wynikiem jak jej dzisiejsza rywalka, ale generalnie szykuje się zjazd. Swoją drogą i tak wszystko dzieje się dużo później niż przypuszczałem...

Może nie wziąłeś pod uwagę obciążeń treningowych, a raczej ich braku? :p

Zagra Wozniacki w finale Doha, pokonała dziś Davis i Puig. Spoglądałem półokiem na ten drugi mecz, dobrze podawała Dunka i obficie korzystała z prezentów od Moniki. Trener powtarzał Portorykance by była cierpliwa, ale niekoniecznie chciała dziś to wykonywać . Zagrała parę szybkich, ładnych winnerów, ale popełniała też tyle błędów, że -jak słusznie zauważył tata Piotr- tymi winnerami nie ma się co przejmować, kilka wpadło, ale na dłuższą tendencję to się nie przełożyło.

Zabawne są te wizyty Pana Piotra na korcie, czasem mam wrażenie, że Ona Go woła tylko po to by usłyszeć Jego uspokajający ton i kilka pochwał i banałów. Nie twierdzę, że te Jego wizyty niczego tenisowo nie wnoszą, bo bywa, że wskazówki rzeczywiście są trafne i coś zmieniają, ale na przykład dziś wynik był na tyle komfortowy, że wiele zawodniczek nie wołałoby coacha. Nie wiem czy ktoś to liczy, ale pewnie Papo Wozniacki wygrałby klasyfikację w liczbie tych pogadanek, niezależnie od wyniku 2 muszą być, a czasem i więcej. Niby trochę się podśmiewam, ale jest to na swój sposób urocze i fajne, że Caro ma z tatą-trenerem taką pozytywną relację. Komfort psychiczny jaki On Jej daje sprawia, że nawet najlepszy fachowiec Go nie wykopie z boksu Dunki. Co ciekawe ten układ, mimo perturbacji, zdaje się funkcjonować bardzo dobrze.

To, że wujek Toni odłączy się od Rafy to duża rewolucja, ale się tego spodziewałem. Nie wyobrażam sobie jednak, by Wozniacki zrobiła podobny manewr, prędzej Ziemia się zatrzyma niż Ona na amen zrezygnuje z porad taty

Straszny jest ten turniej, miałem zamiar śledzić, ale odpuściłem po pierwszym dniu deszczu i rzuceniu okiem na prognozę na resztę tygodnia. Pliskowa raczej w gazie, wnosząc po wynikach, więc szanse Dunki małe.

Bardzo pewnie Pliskova, właściwie nie było momentu, w którym Woźniacka mogła zacząć myśleć o wygraniu seta.

Właściwie trudno inaczej podsumować ten mecz. Była chyba jedna wymiana, gdzie Caro przetrzymała Pliskovą i skończyła, powoli wypracowując przewagę. Żeby cały mecz tak wyglądał Dunka musiałaby być w swojej szczytowej formie fizycznej i liczyć, ze gra z głębi Czeszki będzie słaba. Dziś niezbyt często trzeba było grać te długie wymiany, a i w nich wyżej rozstawiona nie grała jakoś bardzo źle.

To jak się ułożył ten turniej (jednak musiało być zmęczenie u obu, a bardziej odczuła to Wozniacki, która polega na swojej fizyczności) i tak solidna dyspozycja rywalki spowodowała, że można było liczyć tylko na przysłowiową tackę, dobre i to .

WONDER TWIN PLISKOVA ACTIVATES VINCI UPSET IN DUBAI

- Kristyna Pliskova is quickly rising out from under the shadow of twin sister and World No.3 Karolina as the Czech lefty scored a big upset at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, dispatching No.16 seed Roberta Vinci, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

"All week I felt pretty bad in practice, so I'm happy I made it through this match," she said after the match. "It wasn't easy at all."

As Karolina was reaching her maiden Grand Slam final at last summer's US Open, Kristyna was making a breakthrough of her own at the WTA 125K Series event in Dalian, following that up with her first career title at the Tashkent Open. Ranked just shy of her career-high of No.55, Pliskova earned a comeback victory over Vinci, a runner-up in Flushing back in 2015.

"It's much slower on the Center Court and the balls aren't flying that much. Plus, she's a tricky opponent."

Vinci appeared in control as she served for the match in the second set, but Pliskova broke back and rode the momentum into a decisive three-set victory after just under two hours on court. With a serve as big - if not bigger - than her sister's, the 24-year-old struck nine aces throughout and maintained an impressive 82% winning percentage behind her first serve, losing just two points in the decider.

"I was trying to fight all match, but sometimes you have a few bad games. She was solid, serving well. I resolved to be more aggressive and that's when she started making a few more mistakes."

Up next for Pliskova is a potentially tough challenge in either ASB Classic champion Lauren Davis or lucky loser (and Taiwan Open semifinalist) Mandy Minella.

"I'm happy to still be in the tournament and to fight for another win."

Nie spodziewałem się wiele po Wozniacki w tym meczu otwarcia, ale dość łatwo ograła Kasatkine. Pomagała Rosjanka, ale poza tym Dunce ładnie pracował cross z bh, wyglądała notorycznie dość dobrze, chyba udało się nieźle zregenerować po tym wariackim tygodniu w Doha. Pewnie się to jeszcze odezwie, ale na razie było w porządku.

Właśnie skończył się najgorszy mecz jaki widziałem w tym roku. Katastrofalnie grająca Coco poległa z niewiele lepszą Riske. Multum podwójnych posadziła wyżej rozstawiona Amerykanka, była jakaś taka zdekoncentrowana, do tego poziom jaki prezentowała, irytował Ją samą i przez to była jeszcze bardziej nieskupiona. To, że było 4:6 4:6 powoduje, że o grze Riske nic nie będę pisał. Wygrała, ale powinna oddać może 3, 4 gemy, a spotkanie było wyrównane. Miała szczęście Allyson, że trafiła na tak żenująco grającą rywalkę, bo sama powinna dziś jechać do domu. Powtórek nie polecam , może ze 4 piłki warte uwagi.

Sory, że post pod postem, ale skończył mi się czas edycji.

A Safarova to to chyba sprzedała. To co wyrabia od momentu kiedy przełamała w drugim secie nie mieści się w głowie.

Ten drugi mecz ewidentnie nie był interesujący, ale musiałem obejrzeć do końca, by przy opieprzaniu dziewczyn mieć czyste sumienie . W przypadku Wozniacki byłem przygotowany na to, że mecz otwarcia może być Jej jedynym tu, dlatego spojrzałem .

Fajnie że Kiki zaczęła coś grać, dzisiejsze zwycięstwo to pewnie bardziej zasługa zmęczenia Karoliny, ale dobrze że skorzystała.
Muguruza jak nie nijaki występ to kontuzja, po wygranym RG ogromny zjazd. Oby nie podzieliła losu Ivanovic.
