Total Financial Commitment: $6,157,160. The BNP Paribas Open is the most attended tennis event in the world outside of the four Grand Slams. Since 2000, it has been held at the state-of-the-art Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which features a 16,100-seat stadium - the second-largest in the world. The venue sits in the Coachella Valley, known for its 354 days of sunshine a year, making it a perfect setting for professional tennis.

Debuting as a men's event in 1976, the women came to Indian Wells the week before the men in 1989 and then concurrently in 1996. Now held just before Miami's Sony Open Tennis in March, the two-week event has evolved into a 'Premier Mandatory', making it one of the WTA calendar's four most prestigious stops.

Among Indian Wells' many accolades are being named the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year five times - in 1997, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2013 - and the Premier Mandatory Tournament Of The Year in 2014; becoming the first event in the world to offer the Hawk-Eye challenge system on every match court in 2011; and becoming the first ATP/WTA combined tournament to distribute $1 million in prize money to each of its singles champions in 2012.

Indian Wells champions include WTA legends Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles, and more recently 21st century superstars Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki. Lisa Raymond has the tournament doubles record with seven titles.

Miami is one of the most glamorous and upbeat cities in the world, which is why it is the perfect host for the Miami Open presented by Itaú - the largest tennis event in the world outside of the Grand Slams.

A combined ATP/WTA two-week extravaganza in March, this Premier Mandatory event was first held in Delray Beach in 1985. After moving to Boca Raton in 1986, it settled in its permanent home in Miami's Key Biscayne in 1987 - its 30-acre facility eventually becoming known as the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.

Serena Williams became one of just four players in the Open Era with at least seven titles at one event by capturing Miami yet again in 2014. Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, five-time champ Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Monica Seles and Venus Williams also have multiple Miami Open titles. Jana Novotna has the Miami doubles record with seven titles.

Miami has twice been honored as the WTA Premier Tournament Of The Year - in 1995 and 2004.

INSIDER NOTEBOOK: DESERT DREAMING

The two biggest WTA tournaments of the season just around the corner. The BNP Paribas Open kicks off next week, with the Miami Open to follow. With 2,000 points up for grabs in March, here are the storylines we're keeping an eye on as tennis' March Madness is set to begin.

Serena Williams back in action: The World No.1 has played just one event since the US Open, making the Australian Open final in January. She withdrew from the Middle East swing citing a flu, but assured reporters this week that she's ready and raring to go.

Serena is the defending champion - an eight-time champion, to be exact - in Miami and made the semifinals in Indian Wells last year - when she played the tournament for the first time in 14 years. With a hefty lead in the rankings - she has a 3,545 point lead on No.2 Angelique Kerber - Serena's spot at the top isn't in jeopardy in March. But these next two tournaments offer a big opportunity for the women behind her to close the gap before the tour moves to clay.

Kickstarter in the desert: The first two months of the season have been a false start for more than a few top players. Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova have just two wins on tour so far. Garbiñe Muguruza showed signs of traction at the Qatar Total Open, but has tallied just four wins on tour.

North America was surprisingly fertile ground for Halep in 2015. But with little momentum coming into March, No.5 Halep could take a rankings hit if she can't find her form. She's the defending champion in Indian Wells and went on to make the semifinals in Miami. That's 1,390 points to defend over the next four weeks.

By contrast, No.9 Kvitova has nothing but points to gain in March. This time last year she announced her decision to take a six-week break from the tour to recharge. This year she returns to Indian Wells without a coach, having announced a split with David Kotyza after the Australian Open.

Venus Williams returns to Indian Wells: Following in her sister's footsteps, Venus returns to Indian Wells for the first time since 2001. But this is not just a symbolic return. Back up to No.12, Venus comes into the tournament on a seven match win streak, after notching two wins at Fed Cup and capturing her first title of the season at the Taiwan Open.

As Venus wrote in her essay at the The Players Tribune, this is about tennis. "I'm looking forward to the amazing California grounds," she wrote. "I'm looking forward to the top-notch WTA competition. And I'm looking forward to the fans - who played such an important role in helping to make last year so special. But most of all, I'm looking forward to playing tennis.

"Sounds simple - I know. But after almost 30 years of playing this sport, I've learned something. I've learned that, no matter what happens, or happened … or where you are, or where you've been … at the end of the day: tennis is tennis. It's always, always tennis. And there's nothing better."

Victoria Azarenka looks to get back on track: Assuming she's healthy - Azarenka withdrew from Acapulco with a left wrist injury - March could be a very good month for Vika. She's still taken just one loss this season, to Kerber in the Australian Open quarterfinals, and she's a former champion at both Indian Wells and Miami. Currently ranked No.15, she has just 130 points to defend this month.

Complete the sweep: How significant are Indian Wells and Miami? Complete the sweep and that's 2,000 points in pocket, the same as winning a Slam. No one has completed the double since Kim Clijsters in 2005. But now that Serena is playing Indian Wells you have to give her more than a shot to complete the sweep, especially given her vice-like grip on Miami.

Young guns: While the veterans have been winning the trophies, the younger generation of players have shown ample signs of an impending insurgency. Belinda Bencic leads the way after making her Top 10 debut after making the final in St. Petersburg, while Sloane Stephens already has two titles, winning her second just last week in Acapulco.

Meanwhile, Eugenie Bouchard has put her 2015 season behind her, making the quarterfinals or better at three of her five tournaments. Daria Gavrilova, Madison Keys, and Daria Kasatkina are also ones to watch over the next four weeks.

A little over 1,000 points separate No.1 Kerber from No.4 Serena, while less than 500 points separate No.5 from No.20. That extreme bunching means we can expect a significant amount of movement in the RTS this month.

Clean Slate: Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza return to their debut tournament after having their 41-match win streak snapped by Elena Vesnina and Daria Kasatkina in Doha. Last year they went on to win their first three tournaments together at Indian Wells, Miami, and Charleston. Will it be more of the same this year?

Muguruza i Kerber solidarnie nie zamierzają się ogarnąć, Caro dalej bardzo "mądrze" gra ile wlezie i zbiera baty .

Będzie znowu Isia w hajlajtach, znakomicie odpowiedziała na smecza kontrą z forhandu. Było dużo zaciętych punktów, ale Niculescu wygrała w sumie tylko trzy gemy.

Jońca i Sakowicz jak zwykle, nadawali jak katarynki. To, że JJ to dyletant to wiedzą nawet ameby, ale nie mam pojęcia co się dzieje z Panią Joanną, gdy zasiada z nim w kabinie. Nie ta sama komentatorka.

Zastanawiam się też na co TVP prawa do WTA, jak poza meczami Agi prawie nic nie puszczają. Nc+ daje dodatkowy kanał, jak nie mają gdzie puścić transmisji. Powinien być uruchamiany kanał gdzie leciałby tylko tenis, nawet bez komentarza. Turniej trwa, a oni się żegnają i koniec transmisji. Tu są też pojedynki ATP, więc może stąd przerwa, ale bywa tak, że nie pokazują meczu, bo trzeba nadać bardzo ważną powtórkę wyścigów konnych.

Niby wszystko leci na tvpsport.pl, ale nie jest to wielkie usprawiedliwienie. Niestety tam od początku była śpiewka, że kupili WTA dla Radwańskiej, poza tym mają w porywach 4 ludzi do skomentowania meczu, i jak sam wspominasz mnóstwo innych transmisji (i powtórek) do przeprowadzenia. O ile w europejskiej części sezonu jeszcze się zmobilizują, tak siedzenie po nocach raczej nie jest im na rękę, czego dowody mamy chociażby w Indian Wells.

Od początku byłem wielkim przeciwnikiem tenisa w TVP i wszystkie moje obawy się stwierdziły. Przekraczający wszelkie granice stronniczy komentarz, niekompetencja, olewanie wszystkiego co niezwiązane w Radwańską. Jeszcze tylko Sikory brakuje do kompletu.

Mam wrażenie, że gdyby Ana grała z Pliskovą codziennie przez powiedzmy miesiąc, to na te 30-31 meczów nie wygrałaby żadnego. Może z 2 sety by wpadły.

A Nigel robi swoje tu 3 runda, tam jakiś ćwierćfinał, później znowu 3 runda. Tak zmarnował jej ponad dwa lata, teraz znów zegar tyka...

Też miałem zaszczyt oglądać to widowisko. Fatalnie Ana, wszystko leżało dzisiaj. Niby coś Ją tam pobolewało, ale dobrze Jej coach powiedział: "Jak Cię boli, to zejdź z kortu. Jeśli nie to daj coś z siebie, zaangażuj się, rywalizuj". Nic z tego nie zrealizowała, jedyna dobra wiadomość to fakt, że nadal jest piękna i nadal dobrze Jej w czerwonym. Szkoda tylko, że na korcie to nic nie znaczy.

Akurat Sears jest ostatnią osobą, która powinna sobie pozwalać na krytykę Any (nawet jeśli ma rację). Przecież ta ich współpraca jest podobnym wyłudzaniem pieniędzy co program 500 plus w patologicznych rodzinach...

Mam wrażenie, że Ana nie pozwala sobie na żadną krytykę albo zbytnio się nią nie przejmuje . Musi istnieć jakiś powód dla którego tak często zmienia trenerów. Niestety teraz Nigel jest jedyną osobą, która posiada, przynajmniej formalne, prawo obsztorcowania Serbki, szkoda, że nie przynosi to rezultatów.

Nie jestem przekonany, czy Ana jest i kiedykolwiek będzie, mentalnie gotowa na kogoś w pełni konsekwentnego, kto zabrałby się ostro i bezkompromisowo za trenowanie jej. Często mam wrażenie, że boi się konkretniejszych rozwiązań - dlatego wybiera półśrodki, sama siebie oszukując, że coś zmienia...

Tylko tu jest zasadniczy problem, bo Sears nie ma pojęcia o tenisie.

Tak sobie myślę, że sam mógłbym ją poprowadzić (pewnie za mniejszą stawkę) i prawdopodobnie wyszłoby to o wiele lepiej. A przy okazji jeszcze Bastiana zastąpić...

Coś ostatnio ciszej o nich jest w prasie, miał być ślub nawet, ale na razie nic nie słychać.

Ja w życiu nie trzymałem rakiety, ale zawsze jest też trener od przygotowania mentalnego, więc też bym nie odmówił pracy .
