Azarenka Edges Venus In All-No.1 Clash

Victoria Azarenka edged No.16 seed Venus Williams in a clash between former World No.1s as the first round of the Premier Mandatory-level Mutua Madrid Open wrapped up.

After racing out to a 6-3, 2-0 lead, Azarenka faced some resistance in the second set - Williams won four of the next five games to go up a break, 4-3. But Azarenka rebounded nicely from there, winning four of the next five games herself and breaking at love to close the big-hitting American out, 6-3, 7-5.

Azarenka, who had lost four of five previous meetings with Williams, was just too sharp on the day, finishing with a +7 differential of winners to unforced errors (22 to 15). Williams was -13 (14 to 27).

The biggest upset of the day saw Alizé Cornet edge No.2 seed Simona Halep, 7-6(6), 6-3. Cornet fought off two set points in the 62-minute first set, one at 5-4 and another one down 6-5 in the tie-break.

Cornet's win over the World No.2 was her fourth win over a Top 2 player - the Frenchwoman, a former No.11, beat a No.1-ranked Serena Williams three times last year, at Dubai, Wimbledon and Wuhan.

Other surprises saw Barbora Strycova rally from 6-0, 3-1 down to beat No.6 seed Eugenie Bouchard, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, the Canadian's sixth loss in a row, and Samantha Stosur blast 14 aces to outdo No.12 seed Angelique Kerber, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, ending the German's incredible 11-match winning streak on clay.

The rest of the seeds moved smoothly through, including No.3 seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova, who snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Timea Bacsinszky.

Later in the day, No.1 seed Serena Williams outdid Madison Brengle in her opener, 6-0, 6-1.

Petra Kvitova, the No.4 seed, came back to beat Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, while No.5 seed Caroline Wozniacki won 10 games in a row to close out Jarmila Gajdosova, 6-3, 6-0.

No.10 seed Carla Suárez Navarro, No.11 seed Andrea Petkovic, No.14 seed Karolina Pliskova and No.15 seed Sara Errani were also among the winners as the first round came to a close.

And there was another very noteworthy winner among the all-unseeded match-ups - Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque-Mariño won an absolute thriller against WTA Rising Star Heather Watson, fighting off five match points - three down 6-5, and two more in the tie-break - to win, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6(11).

Cornet Stuns Halep In First Round

Alizé Cornet sent an off color Simona Halep crashing out of the Mutua Madrid Open at the first hurdle with a straight set victory on Sunday afternoon.

Twelve months ago, Halep made it all the way to the final where she was only denied the silverware by an inspired Maria Sharapova. However, Cornet ensured the Romanian's stay in the Spanish capital was rather more brief this time around, running out a surprise 7-6(6), 6-3 winner.

Halep had her opportunities in the first set. The most inviting of these came at 5-4, when she held a set point on her own serve, but the Frenchwoman, one of the steeliest competitors on tour, snuffed out the chance. Cornet refused to buckle in the subsequent tie-break either, uncorking a backhand winner at 6-5 down, then taking the set moments later when an increasingly rattled Halep double faulted.

This frustration seeped further into Halep's game in the second, a succession of errors seeing her slip 4-2 behind. It was a setback from which she was unable to recover, Cornet holding her nerve to complete one of the biggest wins of her career and book a second round meeting with Roberta Vinci.

"It went great for me - I played really amazing on the center court," Cornet said. "The first set was really tight and I saved a set point by doing an amazing backhand down the line.

"The second was tight as well. The score doesn't really mean anything and I had to be focused to the end. I was a bit stressed because I was about to beat the World No.2, but finally it was just a big relief and I'm really proud of myself."

Niestety na kolejną rundę już sił nie starczyło, Francuzka poległa z Vinci.

Fajnie zagrała Ivanovic ze Svitoliną. Dużo wygrywających uderzeń, dość dobre serwowanie (były podwójne, ale to już norma) i taka pozytywna agresja. Widać było, że zaangażowała się Serbka w ten mecz i przyjemnie było patrzeć jak kończy piłki z forhandu. Oczywiście w kolejnym spotkaniu może już nie być tak różowo, ale że dawno jej nie oglądałem to mogę pochwalić .

W gemie, w którym miała 40:0. Pierwszego tb też puściła z 5:1, więc szykuje się wielki wyczyn Białorusinki.

O, 5-1 w taju do tego i potem 6 z rzędu. No to naprawdę grubo. Prawie jak peak głupawka Djoko i lesserstwo wasali Fab4. A tu tylko chodzi o ogranie "staruszki"(jakby nie było) na clay'u. Dajcie spokój.

Nawet nie porównujmy tego do ATP, bo mieliśmy do czynienia z jawną amatorką, obrazą rozgrywek nazywanych profesjonalnymi.

Zawsze mnie śmieszy, kiedy jako fan ATP dowartościowujesz się tym, jakie to współczesne WTA jest biedne.

No ale oczywiście jeśli chodzi o Syrenę, to jest teraz patologia mentalna niemal całego (!) touru w meczach z nią (no może poza Halep), jak na ironię, bo gra teraz bardzo daleko od swojej topowej formy.

Jak panie nauczą się poprawnie smeczować i serwować to pociągnę dyskusję. Na razie odpuszczam.

Dokładnie. I tu nie tylko o to chodzi. Lubię WTA, ale zazwyczaj oglądam ATP, z bardzo prostego powodu. Śledzę oba toury i mogę obiektywnie stwierdzić, że sytuacja jest oczywista. Nie rozumiem, jak można być tak bezczelnym i próbować wmawiać innym, iż rozgrywki kobiece w jakimkolwiek aspekcie, poza urodą tenisistek, mogą dorównywać męskim.

While Sharapova avoided the tense finish that accompanied her victory over Caroline Garcia in the previous round, she was pushed hard once again. But, as on so many occasions in the past, she found a way to the winner's circle, eventually seeing off a dogged Woznicki, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Wozniacki had won the two most recent meetings between the two, most memorably a three-hour encounter at last October's BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. Perhaps eager to set down an early marker, Sharapova came out all guns blazing on Manolo Santana, pummeling a series of winners to race through the opening two games.

While Wozniacki would eventually get on the scoreboard, that would be her only contribution to the scoreboard in the first set.

Like Sharapova, arguably the greatest weapon in Wozniacki's arsenal is her will to win. And in the second set her fighting spirit came to the fore, capitalizing on a slight dip from the Russian to force a decider.

The Dane had her chances in the third set, too. It was Sharapova, however, that finished the stronger, capitalizing on some uncharacteristic Wozniacki errors to break decisively in the eighth game.

In the semifinals, Sharapova will face either Svetlana Kuznetsova or Lucie Safarova.

Petra ogolila Serene i mamy bardzo ładny i zupełnie niespodziewany skład finału w Madrycie.

Zerkałem na mecz Camili i Jankovic, wygrała Serbka 2 razy po 7-5. Nie liczyłem na nic, po prostu byłem ciekawy jak Giorgi zagra przed własną publicznością. Wczoraj poleciała Flavia (gratulacje Przemku), dziś ekipa Squadra Azurra straciła kolejną zawodniczkę.

Nie zagrała bardzo źle Giorgi, miała nawet przewagę w drugim, ale Jankovic to niewygodny typ rywalki dla takich jak Włoszka. Mączka też z pewnością nie pomagała. Gospodarze mają jednak swoje etatowe deblistki i one powinny spisać się lepiej.

By dopełnić formalności w Madrycie łatwo wygrała Petra, brawo .
