After a rock-solid start on the European clay in 2024, Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic turned their consistency into a trophy Saturday at the Gonet Geneva Open.

The third-seeded Salvadoran-Croatian pair defeated Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer 7-6(2), 7-5 to claim the trophy at the Swiss clay-court ATP 250. Arevalo and Pavic kept cool under pressure in a one-hour, 44-minute championship match during which they saved all three break points they faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Arevalo and Pavic reached back-to-back semi-finals on clay in April in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, respectively. They also reached the championship match in Rome earlier this month.

With victory in Geneva, the pair took its title tally to two for the 2024 season. Arevalo and Pavic, who also won an ATP 250 on team debut in Hong Kong in January, are currently fifth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

Heliovaara/Patten Rally To Clinch Lyon Trophy
At the Open Parc, Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten continued the red-hot start to their partnership by clinching their second ATP Tour title together.

Heliovaara and Patten dug deep for a 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-8 final triumph against Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti in Lyon. The Finnish-British team at one point trailed by a set and a break, and later fended off a match point to hold serve for 5-5 in the second set. From there, Heliovaara and Patten took control to secure a one-hour, 43-minute win in their maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Bhambri and Olivetti.

Since teaming for the first time in April, Heliovaara and Patten have won four of the seven events they have contested across the ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour. As well as their ATP 250 triumphs in Marrakech and now Lyon, the pair has also lifted Challenger trophies in Madrid and Turin.

Now 8-2 as a team at tour-level, Heliovaara and Patten are up nine spots to 19th in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings as a result of their Lyon run.

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic are one win from earning their first major title as a team.

The ninth seeds eliminated top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday in two hours to reach the Roland Garros final.

Granollers and Zeballos won the pair’s two Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings earlier this year without dropping a set. But Arevalo and Pavic rallied from a set down to make their fourth final of the season. They have won titles in Hong Kong and Geneva, and also reached the Rome final.

Granollers and Zeballos only won 62 per cent of their first-serve points, compared to 79 per cent for Arevalo and Pavic according to Infosys Stats. The ninth seeds broke serve twice in the third set to move on to the championship match, in which they will play 11th seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

Arevalo and Pavic have won 13 of their past 14 matches. They defeated Bolelli and Vavassori in the Rome semi-finals and the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals without losing a set in either clash.

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic won the Roland Garros men's doubles title on Saturday in just their second major as a team. The Salvadoran-Croatian duo defeated Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-5, 6-3 in the final after knocking out top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in Friday's semis.

The 30-year-old Pavic completed the Golden Slam — winning all four majors along with Olympic gold — with the triumph. Pavic joines Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut as the only active men's players to win all four doubles Grand Slams.

"It feels special," the Croatian said during an emotional trophy speech. "I want to say a special thanks to Marcelo for bringing me here to the top. He knows how it's done, a few years ago he won it. First time [at Roland Garros] obviously, so I feel very happy."


Arevalo, 33, won his lone previous major crown two years ago in Paris alongside Jean-Julien Rojer.

"A lot of emotion," added the Salvadoran. "I want to thank Mate for trusting me, for believing in me to fight together. Two crazy weeks, a lot of tough matches... We did it together, man. I'm really happy and the second title here feels special."

The Paris title is the third tour-level crown for the new duo this season after triumphs in Hong Kong and Geneva. Having first teamed up at the start of 2024, they improved to 27-10 as a team this fortnight. The champions lost just one set en route to the title, the opener against Granollers and Zeballos in the semis.

In the final, they converted on all three of their break points while saving six of seven break points against them, according to Infosys Stats. The victory moved Arevalo and Pavic up to second place in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, just 50 points behind Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in first.

Bolelli and Vavassori, who fell to 0-3 against their final opponents this season, have reached the title round at both Grand Slams to start 2024. They are in fourth place in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic charged into the ATP Masters 1000 winners' circle together in style on Monday at the Cincinnati Open.

The fourth-seeded duo eased past home favourites Mackenzie McDonald and Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match in Ohio. Arevalo and Pavic did not face a break point and converted three of five of their own, according to Infosys ATP Stats, as they sealed their fourth tour-level title as a team in just 63 minutes.


“It’s never easy in the finals, especially [against] those guys,” said Pavic. “They won a couple of great matches this week, they beat the number one seed, [who] for me at the moment are maybe in the best shape on tour, so they proved they can beat anybody in doubles. They are good singles guys, good players so it was not easy.

“It was a bit of a different matchup, we didn’t know what to expect, we didn’t seen them playing that much, compared to when we played the other doubles teams. We were playing smart, we were playing good [doubles] from the beginning and throughout the week we were playing some good tennis.”

It was the first Masters 1000 crown that Arevalo and Pavic have won together. Since first teaming in January, the pair has also won a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and two ATP 250 crowns in Hong Kong and Geneva, respectively.

“We have been playing the whole year, so we started playing well and then we had a little bit of ups and downs, but we kept believing, we kept working together as a team, with our coaches and everything,” reflected Arevalo. “After that we started getting better results and now we are feeling confident together, we have good communication.

“I’ve always said it’s super important in a doubles team to have a good vibe on and off the court and I think that’s something that we [have been] doing pretty well for the last [few] months. It takes a lot of work, a lot of dedication and we are just happy that we were able [to win] and we were lucky to get through this match and the title as well.”

With Monday’s victory, Arevalo became the first titlist from El Salvador in Cincinnati tournament history. He and Pavic also consolidated second place in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Rankings. They are now just 460 points behind leaders Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, whom McDonald and Michelsen upset in the semi-finals in Cincinnati.

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic became the first doubles team to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals on Wednesday. The season finale will be played at Inalpi Arena in Turin from 10-17 November.

The Salvadoran and Croatian are enjoying a standout year in their first season as a team. They clinched their qualification when they advanced to the second round of the US Open.

Arevalo and Pavic have won four titles this year, highlighted by their run to the Roland Garros trophy. They also triumphed in Hong Kong, Geneva and Cincinnati.

They have proven a force on all surfaces, earning two of their crowns on hard court, two on clay and reaching the quarter-finals on grass at Wimbledon.

Arevalo and Pavic also advanced to the final at Rome, one of their two ATP Masters 1000 finals of 2024 (Cincinnati title).

Arevalo qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time in 2022 with Jean-Julien Rojer. Pavic is a five-time qualifier with four different partners (Oliver Marach, Bruno Soares, Nikola Mektic and Arevalo). He also competed with Marach as an alternate in 2017.

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic shook off a sluggish start on Wednesday to secure a vital victory at the Nitto ATP Finals.

The top seeds overcame Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 7-5, 6-3 to reignite their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage at the season finale. Arevalo and Pavic rode a red-hot mid-match run of form, during which they won 15 consecutive points, to secure a 68-minute win.

“I think we had to give it our all today, this was the match to [essentially] stay in the tournament,” Arevalo said. “Anything can happen, and we knew that. Today, we put in extra energy. Mate and I decided to go out there and give our best. We were lucky to execute in the important moments and finally we ended up getting the win.”

Arevalo and Pavic, who are now 1-1 in the Bob Bryan Group, will seek to bolster their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages when they take on home favourites Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori in their final round-robin match. The Salvadoran-Croatian team is bidding to become the first top-seeded duo to win the event since Mike and Bob Bryan did so in 2014.

“It’s good to get a win, we actually haven’t won a match since the US Open,” added Pavic. “It’s something that we are not used to at this level [losing five consecutive matches], but it can happen, everybody is playing well. We are very happy to have turned it around and got the win today. Hopefully we can go out there on Friday and play a good match.”

Their maiden team triumph at the event was also a boost to their hopes of securing ATP Year-End Doubles No. 1 presented by PIF honours. Arevalo and Pavic are in pole position in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, 410 points ahead of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, who are 0-2 in the Mike Bryan Group.

The first-set momentum appeared to be with Bopanna and Ebden, who are ending their two-year partnership after the tournament, but they were unable to capitalise on a break lead. Ebden fired two consecutive double faults in a nervy 12th game to hand their opponents the advantage.

From there, Arevalo and Pavic took a stranglehold on the match. Despite a late fightback from Bopanna/Ebden, they won nine out of 12 points behind their first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
