5. Age Is Simply A Number
Mark Knowles retired at the US Open after a highly successful career that included three men’s doubles majors, a Wimbledon mixed doubles title and two year-end World No. 1 finishes. But before beginning the next chapter of his life as a full-time dad and humanitarian, Knowles achieved another notable feat.

Playing his first ATP World Tour tournament of the season in San Jose, Knowles partnered good friend Xavier Malisse. The two went on to lift their second team trophy at the SAP Open, making the 40-year-old Bahamian the first male in his 40s to win an ATP World Tour doubles title since 2006, when 47-year-old John McEnroe coincidentally won the same event with Jonas Bjorkman.

“To be in a sentence with John McEnroe is pretty cool," said Knowles. “I’ll take that. I didn’t realise that. To win a title at 40 years old is far beyond anything I could have dreamed of. When you first turn pro, you never really dream of playing 20-plus years on tour. I’ve been fortunate enough to stay fairly healthy and have had some great partners who have helped me win a lot of titles over the years.”

Daniel Nestor, who shares the same birthday as Knowles and turned 40 on 4 September, later joined his former long-time partner in exclusive company when he reunited with Nenad Zimonjic to win the Swiss Indoors Basel in October. With the victory, Nestor also became the fourth player since 1973 to win 80 tour-level titles.

4. London Calling For Spanish Duo


For Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, securing one of eight slots to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals was an impressive accomplishment, following a run of strong results throughout the season that saw the pair capture its first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Rome, reach the US Open semi-finals and finish runner-up at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Entering the season finale at The O2, Granollers and Lopez were not the favourites, with a plethora of experienced doubles teams eyeing the crown jewel of the ATP World Tour. Utilising a modern style of play, with one player forward and one player on the baseline, the two notched wins against Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi/Jean-Julien Rojer and Jonathan Marray/Frederik Nielsen to advance to the title match.

In the final, Granollers and Lopez found themselves facing another classic serve and volley team, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna. It was a rollercoaster affair, but in the end, Granollers and Lopez ran away in the deciding match tie-break to become just the second Spanish team to win the season-ending championships, joining 1975 titlists Juan Gisbert Sr. and Manuel Orantes.

“We finished here winning the title, so it's incredible for us,” said Granollers. “We try to play as best as we can always. I think we have a very good relationship. So, I think, that's one of the keys of our success… To win here with him is very special. Thanks to the ATP for a great tournament and to Barclays for supporting our sport.”

3. Double Dose Of 600


They may not have played together in 2012, but Leander Paes and Max Mirnyi both showed they are worthy competitors in reaching an impressive landmark: 600 doubles match wins.

After completing a career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open with Radek Stepanek, Paes continued with his bucket list at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, teaming up with Stepanek to attain the milestone through their first-round victory over David Ferrer and Albert Ramos.

“For me at this stage, I’m playing for the history books and setting new records, so for me to get my 600th win is really special,” Paes said. “I’ve got to really thank my whole team over the past 20 years, they’ve made such a difference with me.”

Mirnyi, who successfully defended his Roland Garros title with Daniel Nestor, became the 18th player to join the club when he and his Canadian partner beat Tomas Berdych and Nenad Zimonjic in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

“It was a very close match,” said Mirnyi. “We found ourselves at sudden death deuce on three or four occasions. The second set tie-break could have gone either way, so to get my 600th match win in Shanghai, after months of getting closer, is very exciting.”

Prior to joining forces at the All England Club this year, Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen had never played a tour-level tournament together. The two required a wild card to gain entry, but they clicked like a match made in heaven to write one of the most surprising stories of the season.

Marray and Nielsen would go on to defeat three seeded teams en route to the final, upsetting No. 9 seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in the first round and eighth seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in a tight third-round encounter, before stunning reigning top-seeded champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the semi-finals.

The last team standing in their way was fifth-seeded Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. The Swede and Romanian were contesting their third straight championship match at SW19, but were seeking to get past the final hurdle for the first time. It had all the makings of an intriguing match-up and it more than delivered.

The momentum swung back and forth and it was fitting the outcome would be determined in the first five-set final since 1998. Having lost the fourth set in a tie-break, Marray and Nielsen dug deep to push ahead in the decider, capping off their history-making efforts by becoming the first men’s wild card pair in tournament history to hoist the trophy.

Marray, who had lived on the fringes of the ATP World Tour for many years, said, “Every kind of sportsperson has injuries I'm sure at a time in their career. When you're not really doing so well, those moments you kind of second guess yourself whether you want to carry on or not. But I felt like I had a bit of unfinished business and things like that, so I'm more than happy to have made the decision to carry on.”

1. Triple Crown For The Bryans


In a year that saw a number of players realise incredible personal milestones, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan furthered their case as the greatest men’s doubles team with a trio of accomplishments.

The Bryans had to overcome disappointment on numerous occasions the first half of the season. They fell in the Australian Open and Roland Garros finals, were unable to win their first title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and were sent packing in a shocking defeat at Wimbledon.

Their top priority of the year was the London 2012 Olympics. Returning to the All England Club three weeks after their semi-final loss, the American twins channeled their motivation and desire to win the one title missing from the resume, defeating Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final to become Olympic champions. With the win, they joined Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde as the only teams to own a career Golden Slam.

“To play on Centre Court at Wimbledon and win the gold medal is a dream come true,” said Mike. “We could stop tomorrow and we got a big smile on our face for the rest of our lives.”

The Camarillo, Calif. natives continued chasing the record books at the US Open. Seeded second, the two avenged their Melbourne defeat to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek by prevailing in the final. With the triumph, the Bryans broke the Open Era record for the most Grand Slam team titles, passing Woodbridge and Woodforde and tying John Newcombe and Tony Roche for the all-time record with 12.

“We weren't thinking too much about revenge today,” Bob said. “We were just thinking about playing a good match and executing the scouting report our coach gave us and winning our home slam in front of all these fans that were pumping us up the whole day.”

The third achievement came at the China Open in Beijing. In winning the title, Mike surpassed Woodbridge for the most tour-level doubles title in ATP World Tour history with his 84th crown (he won titles with Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles in addition to his 82 with Bob).

John McEnroe urges tennis bosses to axe doubles

The American legend, 54, is being serious, saying: "Most doubles players, I hate to say, are the slow guys who were not quick enough to play singles."

Ex-world number one John McEnroe believes doubles should be axed.

The 54-year-old American won more doubles titles at grand slams than he did singles, but with the world's greatest players no longer taking part in both forms, he believes the discipline has become devalued.

"Why we are even playing doubles at this point is a mystery to me," McEnroe told the Daily Telegraph.

"I love doubles but I don't even recognise what this is.

"If there was a volleying contest from the service line, most of these guys couldn't... They play an inch from the net.

"It is like wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

"If you cut out doubles and gave that money to singles players ranked between 200 and 1,000, maybe that would do something for the game.

"Then some other guy who never really had the chance to play ends up becoming number 100 in the world instead of quitting when he's number 400.

"Most doubles players, I hate to say, are the slow guys who were not quick enough to play singles."

Niestety, ale muszę przyznać rację McEnroe. Debel to dzisiaj nudna konkurencja. Nie ma tu co oglądać, bo nie przyciągają nazwiska, tylko rywalizują po prostu słabsi zawodnicy, którzy nie zrobili kariery w singlu i myślą, że może w grze podwójnej uda im się coś zdobyć, albo brzydko mówiąc tenisowi emeryci (patrząc na to, co wyprawiał Zimonjić w finale Pucharu Davisa, to określenie świetnie do niego pasuje). Serwis, return, wolej, a potem punkt dla jednej albo drugiej pary. O zwycięstwie decyduje szczęście. Jeden punkt w jedną albo w drugą stronę. Czasem usiłuję zrozumieć tzw. "zwolenników debli", ale wydaje mi się, że już prędzej przekonam się do WTA. Wystarczy też spojrzeć na główne nagrody w turniejach singlowych i deblowych. Proporcje odpowiadają zainteresowaniu. Zresztą po co jakiś czas temu zmieniono zasady w grze podwójnej? Ano po to, aby mecze kończyły się maksimum po półtorej godziny, żeby można zaplanować poważne pojedynki singlowe. Tych debli w Londynie (na World Tour Finals), na których niby są pełne trybuny, nikt by nie oglądał, gdyby nie odbywały się przed singlami. Wracając do nowych zasad wprowadzonych do debla, to dla mnie są one zupełnie antytenisowe, bo gra na przewagi to kwintesencja tenisa. Odnośnie najlepszych singlistów, ci bawią się w debla tylko od czasu do czasu - jeśli już, to i tak z myślą o singlu (żeby np. nabrać ogrania po jakiejś dłuższej przerwie albo przyzwyczaić się do nawierzchni). Zresztą niech o poziomie tej konkurencji świadczy, że często wystarczy, że zbierze się duet dwóch lepszych singlistów i pokonuje on czołowe deble. Przecież Federer z marszu zdobył złoty medal olimpijski w deblu. On prawie w ogóle nie występuje w deblu, a w Pekinie ugadał się z Wawrinką, który też nie przepada za tą formułą, i razem sięgnęli po złoto np. kosztem Bryan'ów. Jak dla mnie deble są ciekawe właśnie tylko na Igrzyskach i w Pucharze Davisa, ale dlatego, że gra się dla własnego kraju i występują tam również singliści. A tak, to trzeba powiedzieć, że ta konkurencja w porównaniu z czasami, w których McEnroe był liderem zarówno deblowego, jak i singlowego rankingu, wyraźnie straciła na prestiżu. Ale jeszcze bardziej kuriozalne w Szlemach są miksty. Je zdecydowanie należałoby zlikwidować i rozdać pieniądze przeznaczone na tę konkurencję dla singlistów spoza pierwszej setki.

Bob and Mike Hit Century Mark

A highly compelling and entertaining season finale at The O2 in London capped what was a thrilling 2014 season on the ATP World Tour doubles circuit. Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan added to their growing milestone haul, clinching 10 or more tour-level titles in a single season for the fourth time (2007, ‘10, ‘13), when they won their fourth Barclays ATP World Tour Finals crown (2003-04, ‘09). They qualified for the season finale for a 13th consecutive year.

Perhaps their biggest accomplishment came on home soil in September, when they captured a historic 100th team title with their fifth US Open trophy. They would go on to earn their 900th match victory a month later in Shanghai, where they would also achieve the Career Golden Masters, becoming the first players to win all nine current ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. Along with their London, US Open and Shanghai crowns, the duo picked up seven other titles this season, at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Cincinnati and Paris; and in Delray Beach and Houston. They clinched the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Ranking for a record 10th time and for the sixth consecutive season.

Zimonjic Joins 600 Wins Club

Novak Djokovic wasn’t the only Serb to register match win No. 600 in 2014. In May, Nenad Zimonjic achieved Zimonjicthe milestone in doubles en route to the Mutua Madrid Open title, alongside Daniel Nestor. The 38 year old is the 19th player to reach the milestone and seventh among active men, joining the Bryans, Nestor, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi. Read Match Report

Nestor and Zimonjic finished second in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, with the Belgrade native also collecting his 50th title at the Apia Sydney International and adding trophies at the Swiss Indoors Basel and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome.

Historic Season For Rojer/Tecau

Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau did not allow three defeats in their first four matches as a duo to deter them from reaching the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals this year. The Dutch-Romanian tandem compiled a dominant 2014 campaign, becoming just the third team to win eight tour-level titles in a single season since 2001. The Bryans have hoisted eight or more trophies on five occasions, while Nestor and Zimonjic won nine titles in ‘09. Watch ATP Uncovered Feature

Rojer and Tecau surged to the fifth seed at the season finale behind late-season crowns on the hard courts of ShenzhenShenzhen, Beijing and Valencia. They also triumphed in Zagreb and Washington, on the clay of Casablanca and Bucharest, as well as on the grass of ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

First-Time Success

There were 15 first-time doubles champions on the ATP World Tour in 2014, including singles World No. 16 Kevin Anderson in Acapulco (w/Ebden). Vasek Pospisil tasted victory for the first time in dramatic fashion when he and Jack Sock stunned Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 7–6(5), 6–7(3), 6–4, 3–6, 7–5 for the Wimbledon title. It was their first tournament together.

Colombian power Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah claimed their maiden titles in Rio de Janeiro, en route to reaching seven finals this year. Meanwhile, Jesse Huta Galung and Stephane Robert became the first lucky losers to win on the ATP World Tour, at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, and Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Michal Przysiezny followed suit at the Valencia Open 500.

More Tidbits
• For the second straight year, the singles champion in Newport enjoyed double the success, as Lleyton Hewitt won his first doubles crown since the 2000 US Open (w/Mirnyi), teaming with countryman Chris Guccione.
• Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares became the first duo to retain the Rogers Cup title in more than 35 years, winning their 10th team crown at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Toronto.
• There were four different Grand Slam champions for the second time in six years, with Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt joining the Bryans and Pospisil/Sock, prevailing at the Australian Open. Also, Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Julien Benneteau emerged victorious at Roland Garros.
• Guccione and Sam Groth won the longest Match Tie-break of the season, defeating Adil Shamasdin and Divij Sharan 19-17 in the Bogota semi-finals.

Doubles Q1 Review: Are Bryan Bros. Back On Track?

Normal service could be set to resume shortly on the ATP World Tour.

By their own high standards, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan didn’t have the start they were looking for in 2015. But in Miami, the World No. 1 pairing were back on top form and optimistic of keeping it that way as the Tour moves to clay.

After being bundled out in the third round of the Australian Open, a tournament they have won six times in the past 10 years, the Bryans rebounded to lift the trophy in Delray Beach, but were denied in Dubai and Indian Wells before returning to the winners’ circle in Miami, where they triumphed for the fourth time.

"It’s still been a good start to the year; it hasn’t been a great one," said Mike Bryan. “We’ll take it, but we’re building momentum. We’re getting better as the year progresses. It’s still early and we’re looking forward to playing well all year."

Added Bob Bryan, “Losses always make us work harder. And losses are sometimes good, because it exposes the holes in your game and your weaknesses. We take each loss very hard and we examine what we need to do better. We usually get after it in the gym or on the practice court the next day.”

With the Bryans not exerting their usual dominance at the start of the season, others were quick to take advantage.

Having played together sporadically in the past three years, with mixed fortunes, Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini certainly did not start the Australian Open as favourites.

But the Italians proved unstoppable as they ripped up the draw at the first Grand Slam championship of the year, ousting the likes of Raven Klaasen and Leander Paes, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau and topping French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the championship match.


And it wasn’t a flash in the pan. Declaring in the Melbourne aftermath that their goal is to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals this year, the Italians currently lead the way in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings by more than 1000 points after backing up their Australian Open title with a runner-up showing at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Also making their mark early in the season have been Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, who have picked up where they left off in their debut season together last year. The Dutch/Romanian duo picked up eight ATP World Tour titles together in 2014 and made a very strong start to 2015, lifting the trophy in Rotterdam, finishing runners-up in Sydney and making their mark at a major by reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open.


“Rojer and Tecau have continued to be solid,” remarked Bob Bryan. “Obviously, Fognini and Bolelli have been consistent this year. They’ve played well in the big tournaments. And Melo/Dodig have had very consistent results as well.”

Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo have indeed impressed in the first quarter of the season. The Croatian/Brazilian pairing made a run to the Australian Open semi-finals and captured the title in Acapulco before reaching the semi-finals in Indian Wells. They are another team backing up a dynamic 2014 campaign, which culminated in them finishing runners-up at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (l. to Bryans).


The #MarchMasters arguably belonged to Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock, though. The 2014 Wimbledon champions couldn’t play together in the first two months of the season, with Sock sidelined after pelvis surgery, but they reunited in some style.

The Canadian/American duo captured their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells, ousting the Bryans in the quarter-finals and topping Bolelli/Fognini in the final. They then came close to completing the Indian Wells-Miami sweep, losing out to the Bryans in a Match Tie-break in the Miami final.

Pospisil, SockAfter just two tournaments, they are up to third in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, with extra incentive to make the Final Showdown this year after missing out by the narrowest of margins in 2014.

Indeed, their results have seen Pospisil unseat his good friend, Daniel Nestor, as Canada’s No. 1-ranked doubles player, a mantle he has held since November 2000.

“They’ve won a Grand Slam and they’ve won a Masters 1000,” said Bob Bryan. “They’ve shown that they can win big titles. They’ve beaten all the best teams in the world and they’re hot right now. They can challenge us; they can challenge anyone. There’s a lot of good teams and those guys seem to be shuffling their way right to the top.”

With Pospisil and Sock not playing together again until the Mutua Madrid Open, the Bryans have the chance to put some breathing space between them in the rankings, starting at this week’s Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston, where they are bidding to win the title for the sixth time.

“We always love the clay,” said Mike Bryan. “We feel that’s one of our favourite surfaces. We’ve won a bunch of Masters 1000s and we’ve played well at Roland Garros a lot of years. We’re looking forward to starting off in Houston. It’s probably been one of our most successful tournaments. We love playing at River Oaks and we look forward to it.”

BryansBut when they get to the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters next week, there will be some new teams to contend with.

Two of the ATP World Tour’s most decorated veterans, Nestor and Leander Paes, are set to start their new partnership at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. Nestor started the year with Rohan Bopanna, who is now set to partner Florin Mergea, while Paes had been playing alongside Raven Klaasen.

Between them, the 42-year-old Nestor and the 41-year-old Paes boast 141 tour-level doubles titles.

"They are multiple Grand Slam champs, legends of doubles playing together, two of the best doubles players to ever play the game,” said Mike Bryan. “They are not going to be lacking experience. I think they are going to complement each other pretty well. Danny with the lefty serve and Leander with the speedy hands; they'll be a force right from the start. I don't think it's going to take them long to start playing well together."

But added Bob, “There have been a lot of switches lately, but we stay out of the drama. It's definitely nice to have a built-in partner for life!”

Twelve key victories in the English capital in 2015 went a long way to securing the year-end No. 1 spot in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings for Rojer and Tecau – making them only the third team in the past 13 years to interrupt the Bryans’ reign at the top and ending the Americans’ six-year run.

In their debut season together in 2014, Rojer and Tecau had lifted eight trophies together. It was quite the feat, but the pair knew they could still achieve even more on a bigger stage. And while their tally amounted to ‘just’ three titles in 2015, those triumphs came at Wimbledon (the first Grand Slam title for both), the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – where they didn’t lose a set in five matches – and at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Rotterdam.

Indeed, it was a season where the spoils were largely divided in the doubles game. The four Grand Slam championships were won by different teams, and though Bob and Mike Bryan went major-less for the first time since 2004, they still finished as the No. 2-ranked duo courtesy of six ATP World Tour titles – including three at Masters 1000 level – and a runner-up showing at Roland Garros.

The battle for the team year-end No. 1 went right down to the penultimate match of the season, with four teams still in the hunt at the start of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

The Bryans kept their hopes alive in arguably the best contest of the season as they saved five match points to edge Jamie Murray and John Peers 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 16-14 in a Group Ashe/Smith decider at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. But in the subsequent winner-take-all semi-final battle with Rojer/Tecau, it was the Dutch/Romanian pairing who prevailed, sealing the No. 1 ranking and a spot in the final at The O2.

Having notched just two wins between them in three previous visits to The O2, Rojer and Tecau would go on to cap a dream week with victory over Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea in the final.

"It's amazing," said Tecau. "We were joking that next year we're only going to play in London! It's a great city that we enjoy very much. It was a great year, our second year playing together. We improved as a team. We had bigger goals, a better schedule. We're always trying to improve our games and our partnership. It's very rewarding to be able to finish the year being able to do all those little things that you've worked on - winning this title, being No. 1, having a Grand Slam on our resume."

"Our big breakthrough came at Wimbledon," said Rojer. "Having won that match, playing on Centre Court at Wimbledon, it really gave us a lot of confidence for our other goals. One of them was playing at The O2. It's such a big event and nice arena. There's a lot of pressure on the court, but it gives us confidence knowing we can overcome these situations. [Everything we've achieved this year] is overwhelming. It's really, really nice."

The Bryans also lost their grip on the individual No. 1 spot in the Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings for the first time since 2012, with Marcelo Melo finishing top of the pile after a standout season. The Brazilian captured six titles with three different partners, including his first Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros alongside Ivan Dodig, and went on a 17-match winning streak after the US Open – lifting trophies in Tokyo, Shanghai, Vienna and Paris. He and Dodig were semi-finalists at the year-end championships in London.

"Of course all tennis players dream of being No. 1 and winning a Grand Slam," said Melo. "So I'm pretty happy I could make it. All of my family, my father and mother, are so proud. It's really nice for me. This year I had my best results so far. I was a bit surprised to start the season so well, but I realised it was going to be my year."

Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini sprung somewhat of a surprise at the start of the season. The unseeded Italians lit up Melbourne Park as they triumphed at the Australian Open, beating Rojer and Tecau in the semi-finals before overcoming fellow first-time finalists Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the final. Also runners-up in Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and Shanghai, they would go on to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time.

"For sure the Australian Open victory is something we always keep in our minds, it was fantastic," said Fognini.

Bolelli added, "After the win we immediately started thinking about the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. It was our goal. We made a couple of other very good results this year. Our doubles success helped our confidence in singles too."

The disappointment of losing the Australian Open final for Herbert and Mahut was forgotten in September when they triumphed at the US Open, becoming the first all-French duo to prevail at Flushing Meadows. It also marked the ninth Grand Slam in a row to have been won by a different men’s doubles team.

"The Australian Open was the first time I had ever won a match at a Grand Slam, and I went on to reach the final with Nicolas. It was all new and great to be part of it," said Herbert. "The US Open was even bigger. When you're five years old and you see Grand Slams on TV, you want to be part of it and you work for 15-20 years to have the level to play those kind of tournaments. Then we won it. And it came so fast with Nico. When you realise a childhood dream, it's amazing and it was the best sensation I've had in my whole life."

Defeat at the US Open marked a second Grand Slam final defeat of the season for Murray and Peers, who had also fallen just short at Wimbledon. The British/Australian pair, who will go their separate ways in 2016, enjoyed a career-best campaign, winning two titles from eight finals and finishing as the fourth best team in the world.

Dominant Murray/Soares Notch US Open Doubles Title

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares are hitting their stride at the perfect time, streaking to the US Open doubles crown on Saturday at Flushing Meadows. The fourth seeds downed Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-3 in 78 minutes, firing 27 winners, while converting four of five break chances.
The duo are now nipping at the heels of Frenchmen Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut for No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London, moving to withing 300 points of the top spot with the title. Earlier in the tournament, Murray and Soares qualified for their first Barclays ATP World Tour Finals as a team.
"I think we were clinical in what we did," said Murray. "We didn't really let them play very much. Bruno returned very well. When he was very aggressive on the return, I could get right on top of the net and the guys didn't have anywhere to play the ball. We did a good job on our serves. After the first game it was big for us to get the break back straightaway and settle ourselves into the match. I think we just did a really solid job.
"I couldn't ask for anything more. I lost two Grand Slam finals last year. I felt like I was ready to win. I felt good about my game, where it was at. I felt like Bruno was a partner that could get me over the line. I think we were validated under our decision to come together."
Murray and Soares claimed their own slices of history on Saturday, with the Brit becoming the first from his country to win the US Open doubles title since Roger Taylor in 1972 and the Brazilian becoming the first ever from the South American nation to lift the trophy.
Carreno Busta and Garcia-Lopez surged out of the gates, breaking in the first game. But the Spaniards' lead would not hold. Two straight breaks for Murray and Soares would swing momentum for good. After capturing the opener 6-2, a Murray volley winner gave them a decisive 2-0 lead in the second set, as the 30 year old lunged to cut off a Carreno Busta forehand at the net. Seven games later, they emerged with the trophy, as Soares sealed the title with a volley winner of his own.
"It means a lot," said Soares. "Every title means a lot. I think this Grand Slam is extra special. For me, New York has been amazing to me. I won the mixed title here twice.
"I had a very tough run in 2013 when Alex (Peya), we won the semis, but he got injured so we weren't able to compete in the final. So for me to be able to come back here and win the whole thing is just an amazing feeling. The year has been incredible, our first year as a team. To win two slams, it's tough to explain how good the feeling is."
The Australian Open champions earned their second Grand Slam title and third of the year at the tour-level, having opened their partnership with a victory on the hard courts of Sydney in January. Runner-up in New York last year with John Peers, Murray improved to 2-2 in major finals, while Soares moved to 2-1. They became the first team to win multiple Grand Slam titles in a season since Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won three in 2013.
Carreno Busta and Garcia-Lopez, meanwhile, were the first unseeded team to reach the US Open doubles final since Lleyton Hewitt and Max Mirnyi lifted the trophy in 2000. Carreno Busta was appearing in his fourth tour-level doubles final, seeking a second title, while Garcia-Lopez was appearing in his ninth final. He won his third ATP World Tour doubles title two weeks ago at the Winston-Salem Open, with Henri Kontinen.

Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez have qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 13-20 November. Lopez/Lopez, who reached the semi-finals at the US Open, join Murray and Soares, as well as Herbert/Mahut and Bryan/Bryan at the season finale. The Roland Garros champions qualified when Murray and Soares won the title in New York on Saturday, per the Grand Slam Champions rule.
Lopez/Lopez are currently No. 5 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London. In addition to their title run on the clay of Roland Garros, they lifted the trophy in Doha at the start of the season. The Spanish tandem also reached the final at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Dubai in February.

Sania and Bopanna hit back at 'toxic person' Leander Paes on Twitter

Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have slammed Leander Paes for questioning the quality of the mixed doubles team that participated in Rio and missed out on a bronze. Mirza has labeled Paes as a 'toxic person' while Bopanna has insisted that criticizing others is his ploy to stay in the news.
"I can very clearly say that in this Olympics and the last Olympics we didn't put the best team forward. This Olympics the mixed doubles was a great opportunity. What more does a man need to do than win four Grand Slams in 14 months.
"There were no more tournaments to win, I could not create anymore tournaments. Sad. Long story short, let's nurture these kids," Paes said after the recently ended Davis Cup match in Delhi.
The Indian mixed doubles pair lost in the bronze-medal match, while the Indian men's doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes was knocked out in the very first round.
Mirza and Bopanna took to Twitter to respond to Paes' sharp remarks as mud-slinging continues in Indian tennis.

However, this was not the first time the three have been embroiled in such a controversy. In the 2012 Olympics, Sania Mirza was forced to team up with Paes in the mixed doubles event as a compromise after both Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Bopanna refused to play with him in the men's doubles event and chose to play together instead. However, Sania got the chance to pick her partner in this Olympics, and she chose Bopanna.
Leander Paes was in the eye of a storm in the build-up to the Rio Games. Initially, Rohan Bopanna had preferred Saketh Myneni as his partner ahead of the announcement, but some last-minute manoeuvring by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) saw Leander announced as the partner.
In the build-up to the Games, media reports had alleged that the veteran tennis star refused to share the room with Rohan Bopanna in the games village. This snowballed into a big debacle when Paes arrived late at the Olympics Village until which time Bopanna had to practice with other players.
