DJOKOVIC, MURRAY, BRYANS & FORMER GREATS TAKE PART IN WORLD TENNIS DAY
Obrazek
Ivan Lendl, Pat Cash, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi will contest the World Tennis Day Showdown in London.

The ITF’s member National Associations will join some of the world’s leading tennis stars in celebrating the second World Tennis Day today. World Tennis Day aims to promote tennis and increase participation among players around the globe, with over 60 nations already confirmed to take part.

This year’s World Tennis Day will be centred around three special events, organised by the promoter StarGames, in three different time zones in Hong Kong, London and New York. The events will feature current and former professionals together with junior and wheelchair demonstrations, including the ITF’s Tennis Play and Stay campaign.

Tomas Berdych, Lleyton Hewitt, Li Na and Samantha Stosur will be in action in the BNP Paribas Showdown at the Hong Kong Velodrome; Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Pat Cash and Ivan Lendl will contest the World Tennis Day Showdown at London’s Earls Court; and Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, and John McEnroe and Patrick McEnroe will take part at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Alongside these events, the ITF has encouraged its National Associations to support World Tennis Day with their own grassroots and club activities to attract new participants to the sport. These include the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which has already established the successful Tennis Night in America in conjunction with the BNP Paribas Showdown in which clubs are asked to open their doors as part of a month-long drive to get children playing the sport. To date, more than 6,500 youth tennis events have been held as part of that initiative.

Many nations will be promoting the Tennis Play and Stay campaign, the ITF’s global initiative launched in 2007 aimed at increasing tennis participation worldwide. The campaign centres around the slogan of ‘Serve, Rally and Score’ and seeks to promote tennis as an easy, fun and healthy sport through the use of slower and lower bouncing balls, shorter and lighter rackets, and smaller courts. Under the Tennis Play and Stay banner, the Tennis10s programme makes it easier for children to take up the game, while TennisXpress is an easy, active and fun coaching programme for adults.

“The inaugural World Tennis Day proved to be a very successful initiative, using high profile special events to bring attention to the developmental activities of our member nations on every continent,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “The enthusiasm and commitment of our National Associations to World Tennis Day in its first year was inspiring and we expect an even greater take-up in 2014 and beyond. March 3rd will be an important day in the international tennis calendar with huge focus on our sport on World Tennis Day.”

BOLLETTIERI, BARRETT ELECTED FOR ENSHRINEMENT

Legendary coach Nick Bollettieri is among five people elected for International Tennis Hall of Fame enshrinement.

The 82-year-old Bollettieri has coaches 10 players who have reached World No. 1, including Andre Agassi, Jim Courier and Boris Becker. He has also worked with current stars Tommy Haas, Kei Nishikori and Ryan Harrison. In 1978, he founded the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, the first full-time tennis boarding school that integrated intense athletic training on and off the court with academic curriculum.

John Barrett, also 82, a leader in many areas of tennis, from broadcaster to tournament director, equipment representative to player, has also been elected for enshrinement.

Barrett is one of the game's premier historians and authors. Barrett is married to former 1993 Hall of Famer Angela Mortimer. The Barretts are the second married couple to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, joining Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

Move Over, Tennis Elbow; Wrist Injuries Increasingly Plague Stars

Obrazek
Novak Djokovic had his ailing right wrist taped during a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Roger Federer in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

What should have been an exciting clash between two tennis titans was instead clouded by a white mass.

Novak Djokovic, who had complained about pain in his right wrist earlier at the Monte Carlo Masters, took the court April 19 for his semifinal against Roger Federer with his right forearm heavily wrapped in white tape. Djokovic lost, 7-5, 6-2, but the outcome did not generate nearly as much concern as did worries about his long-term health.

Although Djokovic said he would be able to return to competition at the Madrid Open next week, the wrist has long been a trouble spot for tennis players. And with the top players swinging harder and more frequently than ever, the wrist has become an increasingly vulnerable joint.

Caroline Wozniacki, ranked No. 14, withdrew last week from the tournament in Stuttgart, Germany, citing a left wrist injury. No. 17 Sloane Stephens has also been hampered by a wrist injury this season. Laura Robson, a promising 20-year-old left-hander, had surgery on her left wrist recently and announced she would be out of competition at least through Wimbledon, which ends in July.

Obrazek
The 21-year-old Sloane Stephens of the United States has been hampered by a wrist
injury this season.

Juan Martín del Potro, ranked a career-high No. 4 in January, has been particularly plagued by wrist injuries. After winning the 2009 United States Open, del Potro missed much of the next year with an injury to his right wrist that required surgery. More recently, del Potro, 25, was having trouble with his left wrist, used only for his two-handed backhand, and decided to have surgery in late March.

Dr. Richard Berger, an orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., performed the operations on Robson and del Potro.

“I do sense that more of the top players, the very elite touring pros, are probably experiencing injuries sufficient to take them out of the sport for some period in time at a higher rate,” Berger said. “Tennis is one of those sports that, honestly, the wrist is one of the structures at most risk because the force of contact with the ball is transmitted directly through the wrist, and very often, with an element of torque as the player attempts to place higher and higher degrees of spin on the ball.”

Berger said that players with a power-laden baseline style, like del Potro, were especially vulnerable to wrist injuries.

“When you hear him make contact with the ball when he’s 100 percent, you can just hear the crack of the contact,” Berger said of del Potro. “It’s almost like the ball is going, for a moment, supersonic. There’s such tremendous transfer of total body energy.

Obrazek
At 25, Juan Martín del Potro of Argentina has already had surgery on both wrists.

“This is energy that springs from the legs, up through the spine, down the arm to the forearm and across the wrist to the racket. At some point, either through genetics or the playing style, the structural integrity of any of those structures is exceeded. For any given individual, the force is greater than the structures are capable of withstanding. That’s where the injury comes from.”

Most sports wrist injuries that involve swinging, Berger said, occur on the less firmly anchored ulnar side of the joint, below the little finger. And tennis players can be more susceptible to the injuries than baseball players or golfers because the impact of their swings is mostly absorbed by one arm.

“In tennis, even if somebody is using a two-handed backhand, there is still a dominance of one hand during the swing,” Berger said, adding, “That one-handedness during the swing is probably a point of vulnerability in the tennis player, much more so than in the other sports, where you’ve got both hands working equally on whatever it is that you’re swinging.”

And the level of physicality in the sport continues to be pushed higher, especially in lengthy rallies.

“This is no slam on the players of 20 years ago — they were incredibly fit,” Berger said. “But I think that with the technology available for training, the regimens that these players go through in their daily routines for fitness, you’re getting close to a superhuman capacity. Again, the ligaments aren’t really able to keep up with that because they don’t change.

“You’ve got this overwhelming strength and speed in the players, that competitive drive that once they’re out there playing, they’re going to be playing as hard as they can against their opponents, and they can get into this vicious cycle of ‘Well, I can outhit you.’ But these structures are just so vulnerable.”

Jak on wyłysiał :( :D

Chodziło mi oczywiście o to zdjęcie gdy gracze stoją w garniturach przed pucharem.
Jest na ATP. Aż mi się zrobiło przykro.
