Eleven Players Graduate From ATP University In London

ATP University welcomed 11 players to the London Marriott County Hall for a three-day workshop featuring presentations made by ATP executives and industry specialists.

The programme began Sunday, 27 November, and covered a variety of topics including overview of the ATP, rules and officiating, anti-corruption, media relations, giving back and personal finances. The players were also special guests at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, where they saw Roger Federer claim a record sixth title at the circuit finale.

More than 750 athletes have completed ATP University since its inception in 1990. The curriculum provides a thorough knowledge of ATP operations and the skills necessary for a productive and lasting career.

Murray set to unlock potential in 2012


Judy Murray is an excellent appointment to the role of the LTA's Fed Cup captain.

The Scot has valuable experience in every aspect required for the job and has a proven track record.

She has proven herself in producing two top-class tennis players in her own family, which is as much as the LTA have managed in the last couple of decades.

Murray has nine years of experience at the top of Scottish tennis, and so she knows how to coach at various levels and has a unique understanding of the game.

She has very good relationships with key individuals at the top of the sport, and at grassroots level too. If Judy were a rock and you split her in two, you would see tennis running right through her.

Murray's appointment comes at the perfect time, both for her and for the LTA with a cluster of very talented players coming through and fit-again experienced campaigners.

British tennis on the women's side has been in the doldrums for a long time now, and Murray will see this as the ideal time at which to make a real impact.

Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong have both had resurgences of late, and their experience will prove very valuable indeed.

Both players are now playing as well as they ever have done, and it will be extremely interesting to see if they can further progress with a clean bill of health in 2012.

In Heather Watson and Laura Robson, Murray has two very fine young players to work with and watch develop.

The Scot will be in her element working with Watson and Robson, and both players are poised for a major move up the rankings and key growth in their developments.

There will not be any wholesale changes, and it will very much be a case of guiding and advising the current batch of players to continue their progress.

Judy is not a ranter or a raver, but she does insist on her charges maintaining very high standards, and she will not tolerate any ill-discipline or lapses in concentration.

The key week will be the first one of the new year as they take on Israel in a play-off, and that will represent a big test of Judy's ability to steer her team to success away from home.

Murray will bring both motivational qualities and technical prowess on the coaching side, and she has been the fulcrum behind her son Andy's rise to prominence.

Judy is the puppet master of her son's progress, and they have a very effective professional as well as family relationship.

Every year as Andy grows as a person, he will see less of his mother as a coaching influence, and his progress under Darren Cahill has been superb.

Andy is set for a magnificent year, and it could well be the season that we see him really make a mark on the world stage in terms of winning a Grand Slam or two.

I see it being a huge year for both Andy and Judy, with both set to stamp their authority on the world of tennis in their own individual ways.

GB are ranked at number 26 at the moment, and I confidently predict that they will improve to be a top-10 side before the next year is out.

The talent is certainly there, and I believe that Murray is the perfect appointment to give every British tennis fan reason to be optimistic and to expect success.

Brad Drewett Appointed ATP Executive Chairman And President

Brad Drewett, former player and current ATP senior executive, has been named as the organisation’s new Executive Chairman and President, it was announced today. He begins his role on January 1, 2012, and will be based in the ATP's London office.

The 53-year-old Australian’s 3-year appointment was voted unanimously by the ATP Board of Directors with Drewett considered to be ideally qualified to take on the multi-faceted role with his extensive experience at the ATP. Drewett currently serves as CEO of the ATP International Group, where he has overseen operations in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific regions since 1999. Prior to that, Drewett served as an elected member of the Player Council and an ATP Player Board Representative (1993-1999). He has also been Tournament Director of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and formerly the Tennis Masters Cup since 2001, and has been instrumental in the event’s tremendous success.

During his 12-year professional playing career, Drewett reached a career-high ranking of 34 in singles, winning two ATP World Tour titles, and represented Australia in Davis Cup competition. The Australian Open Junior champion (1975, 1977) reached the quarter-finals in his first Grand Slam in Melbourne in 1976.

“I am honoured to have this opportunity to lead the ATP, an organisation that I am proud to have been a part of since the beginning of my professional playing career,” Drewett said. “The ATP World Tour and men’s tennis are stronger than ever and it is my intention to continue to lead the organisation on this successful path, working hand in hand with our players and tournaments. I am very excited about the opportunities ahead.”

ATP Player Council President Roger Federer said, “Brad is a very experienced executive and has been an effective leader within the ATP for many years. He understands the global nature of the business as well as the complexities of dealing with all of the Tour's stakeholders. I am confident that Brad's work ethic and leadership will help contribute to the continued success of the ATP World Tour.”

ATP Board Representative Gavin Forbes said, “Brad has the perfect combination of proven business abilities and understanding of player and tournament perspectives to oversee the continued growth of the ATP World Tour. He has been an integral part of the Tour’s success over the last decade, and will be able to get straight to work in January thanks to his deep relationships within the sport.”

Bardzo cieszę się z tej nominacji, bo stanowisko prezydenta ATP objęła osoba, która obraca się w tym środowisku od lat i której jedynym interesem nie będzie chyba tylko kasa i nakręcanie machiny biznesowo-marketingowej. W pełni popieram tutaj Safina, który swego czasu powiedział, że należy skończyć z ludźmi przychodzącymi do tenisa z Disneylandu albo z hokeja i niemającymi o nim żadnego pojęcia.

Tylko tacy ludzie wiedzą, wokół czego współczesny tenis się kręci, czego potrzeba zawodnikom i organizatorom turniejów. Drewett w ATP działał już od ładnych kilkunastu lat (jak nie więcej), stopniowo pnąc się po drabince.

Nie chcę powiedzieć wprost, że wyłącznie kasa, ale jakoś trudno mi oprzeć się wrażeniu, że to ona głównie napędza wpółczesny sport, nie tylko tenis.
Niestety, często punkt siedzenia zupełnie zmienia horyzonty.

Aż śmiać mi się zachciało, jak oglądając finał Australian Open między Edbergiem i Cashem z 1987 roku (ostatni na trawie, polecam popatrzeć, bo poziom i emocje naprawdę wysokie) dowiedziałem się, że zwycięzca otrzyma 103 tysiące dolarów. W 2012 roku będzie to wyraźnie ponad 2 miliony
