Through the course of their 13-year rivalry, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have played here, there and pretty much everywhere, but never at Flushing Meadows. Should seedings hold true and the Spaniard and Swiss meet in the semi-finals of a stacked top half of the draw, the stakes will be enormous.
Not only will the winner have the chance to add to his massive tally of Grand Slam titles (Nadal has 15, second only to Federer's 19), a blockbuster semi-final would determine which player will be World No. 1 on the Monday after the US Open.
Nadal reclaimed the top spot on 21 August when Andy Murray's 41-week run ended. Nadal and Federer find themselves in an immediate battle for the top spot and a longer-term battle for the coveted year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Ranking, which is all but certain to be a two-man race.
Nadal said that he enjoys his top billing at the year's final major and at the top of the rankings, an honour he won't relinquish without a fight. "Being the No. 1 seed and being No. 1 of the world again is good, of course," he said. "I think it's a good achievement after three years of having some troubles. So I'm just happy for that."
Federer said that he would relish a winner-takes-all semi-final battle with Nadal. “I'd love to play Rafa here in New York," Federer said. "Hopefully it will be a night session. Hopefully that would be a great atmosphere and one again where we play great like at the Australian Open. I think that would be fun for everybody involved.”
In the short-term battle for No. 1, Federer must reach at least the quarter-finals to have a shot at passing Nadal. Should he reach the semi-finals and Nadal does not make the last four, Federer will be No. 1. If both players reach the semis, the winner of that match will be on top after the US Open.
Almost nine years to the day since he first became No. 1, Nadal last Monday returned to the top of the Emirates ATP Rankings for his fourth stint at the pinnacle of men’s professional tennis. Nadal, who first ascended to No. 1 on 18 August 2008 at the age of 22, previously last held top spot more than three years ago on 6 July 2014.
Federer debuted at No. 1 on 2 February 2004 but has not been there since 4 November 2012. Federer would break two records of Andre Agassi's if he were to reach the top spot again.
He would become the oldest No. 1 since the Emirates ATP Rankings were established in 1973. The four years and 310 days between 4 November 2012 and 11 September 2017 would also be the longest gap between stints at No. 1.
Federer begins his US Open campaign against #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe. Nadal plays Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in the first round..
Below is a look at possible Emirates ATP Rankings points totals for Nadal and Federer based on their performances in New York and the No. 1 scenarios.
Sporo się może zmienić w czubie rankingu. Murray utrzyma 3. miejsce, ale dalej Zverev, Thiem i Cilić mogą wykręcić życiowe cyfry.

* Wiemy, iż Rafa utrzymuje pierwsze miejsce po Us Open, Roger awansuje na nr 2.
* Alexander Zverev i Marin Cilic osiągają najwyższe pozycje w karierze - odpowiednio 4-ta i 5-ta.
* Carreno Busta jest już wirtualnie 10-tym zawodnikiem świata. Jeśli przegra półfinał utrzyma ten stan tylko w wypadku wygranej jego rodaka w całym turnieju.
* Zarówno Anderson, jak i Del Potro przesuną się do drugiej dzisiątki, jeśli wygrają swoje kolejne spotkania.

Anderson, Carreno Busta Surge In Race To London
Spoiler:
Two of the standout performers at the US Open have put themselves firmly in contention to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in London.
With just eight weeks of the regular ATP World Tour season remaining, Pablo Carreno Busta and Kevin Anderson have surged forwards in the Emirates ATP Race To London as they bid to qualify for the first time.
View Emirates ATP Race To London
Carreno Busta, who reached his first Grand Slam semi-final in New York, losing to Anderson, is up to eighth in the year-to-date standings, although Stan Wawrinka at fifth has already ruled himself out for the remainder of the season. Carreno Busta was also a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros earlier in the year and won his third ATP World Tour title in Estoril (d. Muller).
Anderson, who finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Flushing Meadows, is up to 11th, although he is still behind Novak Djokovic, who is also sidelined for the rest of 2017. The South African has risen 17 places in the standings after a remarkable run in New York, made all the more significant by the injury woes that plagued him in the first half of the season.
Nadal and Roger Federer have already secured their spots at the elite eight-player tournament, to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November.
Alexander Zverev is next in line to qualify, at third in the standings. The 20-year-old German has won two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in his standout season, but failed to make a further push for London as he suffered a surprise second-round exit at the US Open (l. to Coric).
Dominic Thiem reached the fourth round at the US Open as he cemented his place among the Top 4 in the year-to-date standings. The Austrian is looking to qualify for the year-end championships for the second year in a row.
As the race starts to countdown, Grigor Dimitrov, Marin Cilic and Sam Querrey will all look to add crucial points to their tallies in the coming weeks.
Pojawił nam się Carreno Busta na 10-tym miejscu. Ciekawe, czy zdetronizuje Juana Monaco w rankingu MTF-owym na najgorszego zawodnika w TOP10 w historii.

Kyrgios Jumps Five Spots, Mover Of The Week
Spoiler:
ATPWorldTour.com looks at the top Movers of the Week in the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Race To London, as of Monday, 9 October 2017
No. 15 Nick Kyrgios, +5
The Australian star put himself within striking range in the Emirates ATP Race To London with a strong performance at the China Open, where he advanced to the final (l. Nadal). Kyrgios earned 300 points to move his total to 2,000 points in the Race, which put him into the No. 15 spot.
Since No. 7 Stan Wawrinka and No. 10 Novak Djokovic are both out for the rest of the season due to injury, Kyrgios is only behind five active players as he attempts to qualify for his first Nitto ATP Finals. He is 740 points behind David Goffin, who currently occupies the eighth and final qualifying spot. Pablo Carreno Busta, who is No. 9 in the Race would get into London today due to Wawrinka’s injury, and Kyrgios is 595 points behind him as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Shanghai begins.
No. 8 David Goffin, +5
The Belgian broke into the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Race To London with his second title in a row, capturing the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships after winning the Shenzhen Open. Goffin also tied his career-high in the Emirates ATP Rankings at No. 10, after he originally reached that spot in February following a final appearance at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament (l. Tsonga). He never played as the No. 10 player during that stint, as he only held the ranking for the week of 20 February, when he was not in action. Goffin then re-gained his Top 10 spot for four weeks in April and May.
Since 21 March of last year, Goffin has been ranked between No. 10 and No. 15 in the world. He moved to No. 8 in the Emirates ATP Race To London with his Tokyo title, putting him in position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. He will have an opportunity to better his chances this week in Shanghai.
No. 5 Grigor Dimitrov, +1
While the Bulgarian dropped a tough three-setter in the Beijing semi-finals against World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, it was good enough to bump him up one spot in the Emirates ATP Race To London. Dimitrov now has 3,275 points in the Race, and is in prime position to qualify for his first Nitto ATP Finals. The man he moved past, Marin Cilic, is just 100 points behind him. Dimitrov can move even closer to securing his spot this week in Shanghai, where he is projected to face Nadal once again, this time in the quarter-finals.
No. 74 Steve Darcis, +11
While the Belgian was forced to retire from his quarter-final match at the China Open against Kyrgios, the qualifier’s effort was still good enough to make a sizeable jump in the Race. After toughing out World No. 122 Peter Polansky in two hours and 39 minutes in the final round of qualifying, Darcis managed to upset Pablo Carreno Busta, who is No. 9 in the Race standings. Darcis is not competing this week in Shanghai.
No. 86 Marius Copil, +16
Not only did the Romanian reach a career-high of No. 75 in the Emirates ATP Rankings this week, but he jumped 16 spots in the Emirates ATP Race To London as well after an appearance in the final of the 2017 Kaohsiung OEC Open. Copil continued a strong run in recent weeks after he advanced to the quarter-finals at the Moselle Open and then reached the Round of 16 in Shenzhen.
Other Top 100 Movers This Week
No. 39 Richard Gasquet, +4
No. 46 Ryan Harrison, +3
No. 68 Evgeny Donskoy, +7
No. 78 Laslo Djere, +12

"I'll go home and we will work out where I play next, Basel, Paris, one of those or none, before I go to London, which is my priority," said Federer.
Fed zamyka temat walki o YE#1 w zasadzie:
"World number one I don't think will happen but if I play like this maybe I'll get close, who knows?"
