The USTA today announced its plans for a sweeping transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center that will include building a retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium, and the construction of two new stadiums. The transformation will be implemented in three phases to begin at the conclusion of the 2013 US Open, with the goal of overall completion by the 2018 US Open. The completion of the retractable roof for Arthur Ashe Stadium is scheduled for August 2017.
The cost for this historic transformation is estimated at $550 million, including the cost of the retractable roof, estimated to cost in excess of $100 million. As it has done with improvements to the National Tennis Center in the past, the USTA will self-finance the entire cost of this transformation through a combination of bonds and USTA revenue generation. Since 1994, the USTA has invested more than $500 million in improvements to the site.

“We have been working toward a viable design for a roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium for more than a decade,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Dave Haggerty. “Through a long and arduous process, we feel that we now have a design that meets the criteria of being architecturally sound, aesthetically pleasing, reasonably affordable, and buildable.”

In addition to the roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium, phase one of construction is scheduled to include the shifting of the existing practice courts and two tournament courts to the north. This will allow the construction of an expanded viewing area for the practice courts and the three new tournament courts. This enhanced fan experience will require the re-building of the current transportation facilities located adjacent to Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The retractable roof is being designed by ROSSETTI, the designer and architect of Arthur Ashe Stadium. The USTA has hired Hunt Construction Group to build the retractable roof structure. Hunt has a long and impressive track record of sports facility construction in New York City, including construction of the Barclays Center and Citifield. As designed, the retractable roof constructed of flexible, translucent PTFE fabric stretched over a steel frame, will be supported by eight steel columns surrounding Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The project’s final phase will include the construction of a new 15,000-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium. The USTA expects final design work for Armstrong to be completed in the next 12 to 18 months. The targeted completion date of the stadium, which will be built “roof-ready,” is August 2018. Also during the third phase, the USTA will complete a series of upgrades to the East Entrance, the most trafficked entry point to the US Open.

“We have an aggressive construction agenda for the entire National Tennis Center, with a new Grandstand Court built in time for the 2015 US Open, new retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium by 2017, and a new Louis Armstrong Stadium opening for the 2018 US Open,” said Gordon Smith, USTA Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. “We recognize there are many known, and certainly many unknown, hurdles we will have to confront to meet this schedule. We are ready for the challenge and hope we can achieve it.”

As a direct result of these collective enhancements to the NTC, the facility will be able to accommodate an extra 10,000 people each day during the US Open, increasing attendance by approximately 100,000 new visitors, and amounting to a significant economic boost to Queens, New York City and the entire metropolitan region.
The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level -- from local communities to the highest level of the professional game.

Keep the roof away

NEW YORK -- The major news kicking off this year's US Open was the announcement that by 2017, Arthur Ashe Stadium will have a retractable roof. And with it comes the elimination of all those hideous rain delays that have paralyzed the tournament for years.

You know what we're talking about: The fickle New York weather has pushed back the men's final to Monday for five straight seasons. In 2011, the soaked grounds created scheduling strife so severe that the likes of Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal even staged a pretty poignant protest.

So after years of outrage from the players and unrelenting questions from the media, the Open finally foot the bill for the $100 million umbrella.
As it turns out, that was the worst decision the USTA has ever made.

On Monday, for 4½ rain-ravaged hours, and with the competitors safely ensconced in the players' lounge, clowning around on the foosball table and furiously updating their Twitter accounts, the rest of us got to watch tennis at its finest.

That's right. It was that time of year for CBS to queue up its obligatory tennis classics.

The network showed an arresting array of the greatest US Open tiebreakers of all time. Jimmy Connors versus John McEnroe in a 1980 five-set semifinal barn burner; Bjorn Borg against Connors in the 1976 final played on green Har-Tru, when the American won the fourth set, and the match, in a gripping 11-9 tiebreaker. And how about the day tennis turned into a full-contact sport in the 1997 tussle between Venus Williams and Irina Spirlea, when the two famously collided as they walked to their changeover chairs? That one ended with Venus winning 9-7 in the third-set 'breaker -- after saving two match points.

That's ulcer-inducing stuff, is it not?

When the grounds dried and the large green patches that had defaced the Doppler radar finally disappeared, so did some of the best matches we've ever seen -- and out came Alison Riske, Daniela Hantuchova, David Ferrer, Janko Tipsarevic and a few others.

Not that there was anything terribly wrong with any of those matches. Hantuchova belted 15 aces and played remarkably cleanly in ending the young American's run, while Ferrer and Tiprarevic wrestled for three minutes shy of four hours, with Ferrer pulling out the four-set win, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3). There were some exhausting moments, with each scrapping and scrambling in rallies that lasted more than 20 shots.

But compared to the quality of matches we were watching during the delay, let's just say CBS doesn't need to store these in its rain-reserved archives.

Remember the 1996 quarterfinal between Pete Sampras and Alex Corretja, when the American hurled in the fifth-set tiebreaker? That was juicy stuff -- quite literally. How about the gladiatorial battle between Sampras and Andre Agassi in 2001, a match that went to four tiebreakers with not one single break of serve?

If you weren't bathing in the afterglow of that one, you simply can't be a fan of perfection.

In a few years, we might not get the chance to rewind and watch these epics again. And don't go blaming the rain for foiling hours of unfettered entertainment. It'll be the fault of nothing but that lousy roof.

Melbourne Park set for $338m upgrade

Melbourne Park, the venue for the Australian Open tournament, is to have a new $338 million upgrade.

The world-class tennis facilities have already undergone significant upgrade works over the last two years, but now a second phase project has been launched which will see improvements to the multipurpose Rod Laver Arena and better access to Melbourne Park.

Victoria state Premier Denis Napthine announced the funding and unveiled the details of the major project on the eve of Australian Open 2014.

“Major events such as the Australian Open deliver more than great sporting moments – they provide a massive boost to the Victorian economy and create new jobs,” Dr Napthine said.

“There is no doubt this work will keep Melbourne Park as the number one Grand Slam venue in the world and further cement Melbourne and Victoria as the global sporting capital."

In addition to the Rod Laver Arena works and access improvements, the stage two project also includes construction of a new 5000-seat show court; a new media and administration centre; upgrade works in Garden Square; and a new central terrace.

Long-Sought Roof for U.S. Open Is Taking Shape at Arthur Ashe Stadium

During last summer’s United States Open, the evidence of roof construction at Arthur Ashe Stadium was hidden under large flower planters and inside a bar.

There is no hiding it now — not with two giant yellow construction cranes looming over the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and 150-foot blue steel columns rising alongside the Open’s main court.

The long-awaited retractable roof over Ashe Stadium is moving from the realm of imagination into reality in the coming months. The first two of the 24 columns that will hold up the roof have been installed, the beginning of a steel superstructure that is expected to be completed in time for next summer’s Open.

Ashe Stadium cannot support the weight of a roof because of the swamplike soil it sits on and its size — with more than 22,500 seats, it is the largest stadium in tennis. Therefore, a 5,000-ton superstructure is being built around and above the stadium, which will be covered with a translucent fabric.

The plan is for the roof to be finished by the 2016 Open. The retractable sections of the roof and most of the fabric will not be added until after next year’s tournament.

“The goal is by May-June 2016 we’re down to just testing,” said Danny Zausner, the chief operating officer of the National Tennis Center.

Only a few years ago, a roof on Ashe Stadium seemed a fanciful notion. As rainy weather created scheduling problems year after year, the pressure mounted on the United States Tennis Association to come up with a solution, but officials insisted a roof was not yet technologically possible. The United States Open lagged behind the other three Grand Slam tournaments, which each had at least one roofed stadium or plans for one.

But after 10 years of study, the U.S.T.A. announced plans last year to build a roof on Ashe Stadium as part of a more than $500 million renovation project.

At the moment, the National Tennis Center does not look ready to host anything but a welders’ convention. Support towers peak out the top of Ashe, awaiting steel trusses that will attach to the columns. One crane is parked in the main pedestrian walkway, near the customary site of a gift shop, while the other is doing its work in the practice court area, which was a popular addition for this year’s Open. Steel columns and beams are lying in parking lots and sidewalks.

“Not only are we doing it around the Open, we’re doing it around existing structures,” Zausner said. “We haven’t made it simple for these guys.”

On Thursday, a crane lifted part of a blue column from the practice courts, over Courts 5 and 6 and into place near the main entrance to Ashe Stadium.

“We take a lot of pictures and send them to people, but until you come here and look at it, you can’t get the scale of any of it,” Zausner said.

The columns are made up of three 50-foot pieces, only one of which fits on a truck at a time. The two vertical columns erected so far are on the southwest side of the stadium. Each vertical column will have two diagonal columns attached to it. A three-column unit is being constructed on each of the stadium’s eight corners.

Zausner said the public design commission described the columns as “works of art.” The roof project was designed by Rossetti Architects, the original architect for Ashe Stadium, which opened in 1997.

The columns at each corner are supported by about 25 pilings driven 120 to 180 feet into the ground and encased in concrete. Most of the pilings were dug before this year’s Open, but the concrete bases of the columns were covered by planters and tables.

The changes in Ashe Stadium will be more obvious to visitors at the Open next August. In addition to the roof structure, the stadium will have new lighting and sound systems, which will be built into catwalks in the roof. Two new video screens will increase the total to four.

Construction of the new 8,000-seat Grandstand court in the southwest corner of the grounds will also begin this winter. The Grandstand and a renovation of the south end of the tennis center are expected to be completed for the 2016 Open.

A new 15,000-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium, possibly with its own retractable roof, is the final part of the renovation project, and is expected to open in 2017.

Dach na korcie centralnym paryskiego turnieju jest przedmiotem dyskusji już od wielu lat. Przyspieszyły ją ulewy, jakie w zeszłym roku nawiedziły francuską stolicę podczas trwania Rolanda Garrosa. Wówczas w wyniku fatalnej pogody po raz pierwszy od 16 lat odwołane zostały wszystkie mecze zaplanowane na dany dzień.

Organizatorom, podobnie jak tenisistom i fanom, zależy, aby rywalizacja na paryskiej mączce toczyła się sprawnie i bez ingerencji sił natury. Dlatego też poinformowano, że do 2020 roku powstanie na korcie Philippe'a Chatriera dach, który będzie można zasunąć w 15 minut. Obiekt zostanie zmodernizowany poprzez budowę nowych trybun, dzięki czemu stanie się nawet możliwe rozgrywanie meczów wieczorową porą.

Jak doniosła francuska gazeta "L'Équipe", na obiektach im. Rolanda Garrosa doszło do wielu ważnych zmian. Paryski turniej w końcu doczekał się zadaszonego kortu, co pozwoli na sprawne rozgrywanie kluczowych spotkań (od fazy ćwierćfinałowej). Ponadto poinformowano, że na 12 kortach zamontowano oświetlenie. Pozwoli to na grę w warunkach wieczornych, co dotychczas było niemożliwe po zachodzie słońca.

Na razie nie wiadomo, kiedy dokładnie nastąpi powrót do rywalizacji na światowych kortach. Z powodu pandemii COVID-19 zmagania są zawieszone co najmniej do końca lipca. Planowany na przełom maja i czerwca Roland Garros 2020 przeniesiono na jesień. Według francuskich mediów jego inauguracja może nastąpić 27 września, ale wszystko zależy od sytuacji związanej z koronawirusem.
