Puchar Davisa: Del Potro i Nalbandian zagrają w ekipie Argentyny



Po trzyletniej przerwie Juan Martin del Potro i David Nalbandian znów razem wystąpią w reprezentacji Argentyny startującej w tenisowych rozgrywkach o Puchar Davisa. W dniach 16-19 września zmierzą się w Belgradzie z broniącą trofeum Serbią.
Ostatnio zagrali razem w ekipie Argentyny w grudniu 2008 roku, kiedy w Mar del Plata przegrali w finale z Hiszpanią 1:3. W kolejnych sezonach obaj zmagali się z licznymi kontuzjami i brakiem formy.

Zresztą del Potro w tym roku, po dwóch latach przerwy, pomógł w lipcu pokonać w Buenos Aires Kazachstan 5:0 w ćwierćfinale rywalizacji o "Srebrną Salaterę".

W rozgrywanym na twardych kortach w Nowym Jorku wielkoszlemowym US Open (z pulą 23,063 mln dol.) obaj argentyńscy gracze dotarli do trzecie rundy. W niedzielę będą walczyć o miejsca w 1/8 finału: del Potro, triumfator tej imprezy sprzed dwóch lat, zagra przeciwko Francuzowi Gillesowi Simonowi; a Nalbandian zmierzy się z broniącym tytułu Hiszpanem Rafaelem Nadalem, wiceliderem rankingu ATP World Tour.

Oprócz nich w składzie drużyny Argentyny, powołanej na mecz z Serbią, znaleźli się Juan Ignacio Chela i Juan Monaco, który w US Open jest już w czwartej rundzie. W niej spotka się ze Szwajcarem Rogerem Federerem (nr 3. na świecie).

Natomiast Chela, w niedzielnym meczu trzeciej rundy, zmierzy się z Amerykaninem Donaldem Youngiem.

Drugiego finalistę tegorocznej edycji Pucharu Davisa wyłoni spotkanie Francuzów z Hiszpanami, rozgrywane w Cordobie również w trzeci weekend września.

Federer-Hewitt Set For Davis Cup Clash


Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer have clashed
25 times in their careers.

One of tennis’ most enduring rivalries of the past decade will reignite in a week’s time in Sydney, where Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt are due to square off in Davis Cup action. Australia plays host to Switzerland in the Davis Cup World Group play-off tie, to be held on grass at Royal Sydney Golf Club from 16-18 September.

Federer takes in a commanding 17-8 career lead over Hewitt, but it was the Australian who won the pair’s last meeting, in the grass-court final at Halle in 2010. The two contested a memorable Davis Cup clash in the 2003 World Group play-offs in Melbourne, when Hewitt rallied from two sets down to defeat Federer in five sets. However, he would go on to lose his next 15 matches against the Swiss.

The two have had quite different lead-ins to the tie. While Federer is preparing to contest the US Open quarter-finals in New York, Hewitt was forced to miss the final Grand Slam of the year due to the foot injury that has sidelined him for much of the season and seen him slip to World No. 188.

“It's a very unlucky draw for us,” said Federer who is set for a fast turnaround to get to Sydney if he is to reach the final at Flushing Meadows. “Sure, Australia is one of those great nations and I enjoy watching them play Davis Cup. So that's obviously what's very intriguing playing against them.

“But for us it was tough now to sort of pack our bags, pay a lot of money for flights and hotels. So the Federation is not happy. At least the minimum we can do is try to win that tie and get back in the World Group. We'll see how it goes. I hope I can get there and play against the Aussies.”

Australian Davis Cup captain Patrick Rafter confirmed that Hewitt is on course to be fit for the tie. “Lleyton missed the US Open and has arrived in Sydney nice and early to get the best possible preparation," Rafter said. "He is a fighter and I am confident he will get his body right for the tie. We want to get them on the grass, in front of our home crowd and fight like hell to win this tie.”

Federer is supported in the Swiss squad by Stanislas Wawrinka, while No. 1 Australian and Wimbledon quarter-finalist Bernard Tomic also features for the home side.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray also face fast turnarounds after the US Open, having committed to playing for their countries in Davis Cup ties in Europe. Djokovic and Nadal will both feature in the World Group semi-finals as Serbia hosts a Juan Martin del Potro-led Argentina in Belgrade and Spain faces France in Cordoba. Meanwhile, Murray will travel home to Scotland as Great Britain prepares to face Hungary in a Europe/Africa Zone II contest.

Swiss tennis team sweating on Federer

Captain Pat Rafter declared himself happy with Australia's preparations for next week's Davis Cup World Group tennis play-off as their Swiss opposition arrived without star player Roger Federer.

While most of the Australian team have been practising on the grass courts at the venue, Royal Sydney Golf Club, for a few days, Federer is still involved in the rain-delayed US Open.

Federer has a semi-final showdown with world No.1 Novak Djokovic on Sunday (AEST).

Rain has forced the men's final at Flushing Meadows back to Monday night, New York time, for a fourth successive year and if Federer makes the title decider he won't arrive in Sydney until 24 hours before the tie begins on Friday.

"If he (Federer) loses (the semi) the earliest he could possibly get here would be Tuesday, the rest of their team arrived today," Rafter told AAP on Friday.

Conversely, Australia's top-ranked singles player Bernard Tomic arrived on Tuesday to join team mates Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and Chris Guccione.

Wet weather in Sydney on Friday prevented Matosevic getting court time following an ankle injury he suffered in the first round of the US Open.

Rafter was pleased with the progress of team stalwart Hewitt, who missed the American grand slam event with a foot injury.

"Marinko was going to get on court today, but he obviously did not, so he'll go down and do some agility work and test it out again every day to get it stronger," Rafter said.

"Lleyton pulled up fantastic from yesterday's hit, so that's really encouraging. He had another really good session.

"The boys have trained really hard for the last three or four days, so it's probably not a bad thing for them to have a break.

"We're happy with our preparation all we can do is our best and that's by preparing the best and we've done all that so far.

"Hopefully we get some decent weather now and we can get back out there.

"The conditions have been great, they've done an pretty good job on the courts with the wrong time of year for us to be on grass."

While Hewitt was saved for the doubles and reverse singles in the last round against China, Rafter hinted his veteran scrapper would be involved from day one against the Swiss.

"We haven't even gone there yet, but I think we need our best team in there and Lleyton is part of that, so we'll address everything closer to the tie," Rafter said.

Aussies aim to take down Wawrinka: Rafter

Davis Cup tennis captain Pat Rafter says Australia must take down Stanislas Wawrinka in order to counter the Federer factor in this week's Davis Cup World Group tennis play-off against Switzerland.

The winner, on grass at Royal Sydney Golf Club starting on Friday, will be promoted to the World Group for next year.

Rafter expects the former world No.1 to be fired up.

"Yes, he's not coming down here to stuff around, he wants to win," Rafter told reporters at Royal Sydney on Monday.

"It's a long way to come, as he said earlier in the week, and obviously he's coming in very late, so he's here to win.

"That obviously puts us under a lot more pressure. He's obviously one of the greatest grass-courters of all time but we're looking at trying to take down Wawrinka."

Rafter said Australia was always likely to struggle against Federer on any surface and he hoped the home side could win the two singles matches against Wawrinka and the doubles.

While opting to play on grass against a team including six-times Wimbledon champion Federer would appear a gamble, Rafter stressed the choice of surface had more to do with Wawrinka, Switzerland's No.2.

Ranked 14th in the world, Wawrinka has a 9-13 career record on grass and a 1-2 record this year.

The two losses both came against players ranked over 100 places lower than the right-hander.

"We have to look at what's our best chance of winning this Davis Cup tie and obviously playing Federer on any surface is not great," Rafter said.

"So we look at what is Wawrinka's worst surface and he does not like grass.

"If we've got any chance of beating these guys we have to take down Wawrinka."

Rafter was pleased with the hitting of team stalwart Lleyton Hewitt, who missed the US Open through injury.

"He said to me about three days ago it's the first time he hasn't felt his toe in a long time, so if he could play on grass every week of the year, he'd be a very happy boy," Rafter said.

Conversely, Australia's highest ranked player Bernard Tomic looked listless in his practice hit with Hewitt on Monday.

"That's Bernie isn't it? He's all over the shop sometimes," Rafter said.

"It's one thing we're working on all the time with him, is pick his attitude up, pick his game up."

Rafter described the court as beautiful, though he said it would like it a little firmer.

He revealed Matthew Ebden was pressing Marinko Matosevic for the last place in the team alongside Hewitt, Tomic and Chris Guccione.

Djokovic, Nadal, Federer Switch Focus To Davis Cup

are both in Davis Cup semi-final action this week.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal don't have long to reflect on their US Open performances as this week their focus turns to national duty in the Davis Cup World Group semi-finals, from 16-18 September.

World No. 1 Djokovic will spearhead defending champion Serbia's home semi-final tie against 1981, 2006 and 2008 finalist Argentina on an indoor hard-court in Belgrade. Djokovic will look to improve his 64-2 season record alongside Top 20 compatriots Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic, plus World No. 2 doubles star Nenad Zimonjic.

Before travelling to Belgrade, US Open titlist Djokovic will take part in a New York City media tour on Tuesday, including appearance on the Early Show, Today Show, Regis & Kelly, CNN and Charlie Rose.

Nadal will travel with the president of the Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela, on a private jet to Cordoba Tuesday, to help four-time champion Spain reach its eighth Davis Cup final. Spain's captain Albert Costa has selected the World No. 2, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco for the clay-court tie against France, which features Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The 25-year-old Nadal's only loss in a Davis Cup singles rubber came against Jiri Novak on his debut against the Czech Republic in February 2004. Five-time Roland Garros champion Nadal has a 16-1 singles record, including a perfect 12-0 mark on clay.

Roger Federer is set to land in Sydney on Wednesday for Switzerland's grass-court tie against Australia. The World No. 3, who was unable to convert two match points in his US Open semi-final against Djokovic, will come face-to-face against Lleyton Hewitt. Eight years ago, Hewitt beat Federer 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-1 to help Australia to a 3-2 win. Will history repeat itself this week?

World No. 9 Tomas Berdych features for the Czech Republic in its tie versus Romania in Bucharest, while Jurgen Melzer - who won the US Open doubles title with Philipp Petzschner - plays for Austria against Belgium in Antwerp. The other play-off ties include Russia vs. Brazil, Israel vs. Canada, South Africa vs. Croatia, Chile vs. Italy and Japan vs. Italy.

Federer fine for Davis Cup tie, despite tight schedule

LLEYTON Hewitt says a short preparation time won't hurt Swiss superstar Roger Federer heading into the Davis Cup World Group playoff tie in Sydney this week.

Swiss team management revealed today that Federer would arrive in Sydney tomorrow, just two days before the tie starts.

"For a freak like Roger, it doesn't matter," Hewitt told reporters today.

"I haven't seen a lot that Roger hasn't been able to do, so he's as close to Superman as it comes."

Hewitt was pleased with his physical condition after missing the US Open through injury and said he was prepared to play both singles and doubles if required.

Switzerland's second-ranked player Stanislas Wawrinka revealed he was battling a foot injury he suffered at the US Open, but hoped to be fit for Friday.

Switzerland boasts the two highest-ranked singles players in the grass court tie, with Federer at No.3 and Wawrinka at 14.

Asked what it will take for Australia to win the tie, Hewitt said he'd have to lift.

"I'll have to play a lot better than my ranking I guess, 188 in the world probably won't do it," Hewitt said.

"To be playing a team like Switzerland with two top 15 players in the world, just to get back in the world group is no easy ask.

"We know we're going to be up against it this week, but we believe in each other and hopefully we can get the job done."

Australia's top-ranked singles player Bernard Tomic is looking forward to the potential challenge of tackling two top 15 players in one of his highest profile ties to date.

"It's a big opportunity, I can't wait for it to present itself," Tomic said.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer won't arrive until Wednesday the Davis Cup tennis tie against Australia in Sydney starting on Friday.

Switzerland team manager Daniel Monnin was reluctant to talk about Federer at his team's media conference at Royal Sydney Golf Club on Tuesday but said the world No.3 would fly in on Wednesday for the World Group playoff clash.

Federer will have to rebound quickly from the exertion and bitter disappointment of his five-set loss to world No.1 Novak Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals in New York on Sunday (AEST).

Switzerland's second-ranked singles player, Stanislas Wawrinka, revealed he was still carrying a leg injury from his US Open camapign but was hopeful of being fit to play.

Wawrinka wasn't surprised Australia chose to play the tie on grass as it is his weakest surface.

A few hours after arriving in Sydney, Federer spent about 1 1/2 hours hitting with his teammates on an outside court.

Federer quickly ticked off all the potential irritant factors after fielding a few questions, as he stopped to sign autographs for some star-struck kids.

He was asked about the long journey to Australia and also the weather.

"For a long flight, it seemed pretty good actually," he said.

"It's nice isn't it? I was expecting colder."

The 30-year-old star was philosophical about having just two days to prepare for a different surface following his US Open campaign and such a long journey.

"Well, usually we never have that much time to get used to the grass anyway, so that's kind of how we have to do it every year for the grass season, anyway, so I'm kind of used to it," Federer said.

"The grass (here) is pretty good. It wasn't centre court now, so I don't know how that plays, but we'll see how it goes tomorrow."

Swiss captain Severin Luthi, who travelled to Australia with Federer, backed his star player to handle the short preparation time.

"He's a great champion, we know that, and for sure it's always better if you have more days but I'm sure that he can handle this and to be ready on Friday," Luthi told reporters.

He was keeping an open mind about whether to use Federer in doubles as well as singles.

"I'm sure that he can go three days if he has to, but we like to have different possibilities," Luthi said.

He was confident Stanislas Wawrinka would be right for the tie despite a niggling leg injury the world No.19 brought over from the US Open.

"They are used to playing with small injuries, for sure, it's not a big thing, so I'm not concerned about that," Luthi said.

The Swiss captain said the court for the tie was an old-fashioned grass court that he thought would be a fair surface.

Fed's hit-and-run mission

ROGER FEDERER has unfinished Davis Cup business to take care of in Australia, and the nation's tennis fans will be richer for it.

In recent years, live tennis on free-to-air TV outside the summer months has been as rare as grand slam victories by an Australian, so it's fitting that in the week Samantha Stosur broke a nine-year drought for the country, the sport again has a chance to reach living rooms around the land.

Judging by the reception the two teams received at the exclusive Royal Sydney Golf Club's grass courts yesterday, Federer could well command more interest than whether Australia can end four years in the Davis Cup's outposts by returning to the world group.

The camera crews largely had their backs turned to Lleyton Hewitt as he hit up on the practice courts, turning their attention to Federer. The dozens of kids present waited hours for a fleeting meeting with Federer, who has not played in Sydney in nearly nine years. Some were rewarded with an autograph as the champion left the court but when Marinko Matosevic, Australia's third-ranked player, made the same journey minutes later only one fan approached.

''It's normal, everywhere he comes there's a lot of journalists so I think he's used to that,'' Switzerland's Davis Cup captain, Severin Luthi, said.

Seeing Federer in Switzerland's Cup team, however, has been increasingly abnormal in recent years. Despite having a great appreciation of the game's traditions, Federer has played in only six of Switzerland's 14 Cup ties since 2005.

His most recent match for Switzerland on these shores was the fabled rubber he lost to Hewitt in 2003 after leading by two sets. The Swiss, however, say the fact Federer made the long trip here from New York, via home and Dubai, is evidence of his commitment. And Federer hit the courts only hours after arriving yesterday morning.

''After a long flight, I'm feeling pretty good,'' Federer said. Asked if two days was enough to make the transition from hardcourt to grass, he quickly dismissed any concerns.

''Usually we never have that much time to get used to the grass anyway, that's how we have to deal with it every year for the grass season,'' the six-time Wimbledon champion said. ''It wasn't centre court now so I don't know how that plays, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.''

Federer is likely to play Hewitt in the opening match and what will possibly be his only singles rubber, and in Saturday's doubles. However, the Swiss say he could play on all three days ''if he has to''. That would mean Australia were still alive heading into the last day and the nation got another chance to see one of the game's greats.

Reaching for greatness

In this case, the plan, as publicised by team captain Pat Rafter yesterday, is more to go around the hurdle so to speak.

Rafter said the team chose to play the tie on grass because it’s Wawrinka’s worst surface and they feel that they have a better chance of beating him on grass than they do six-time Wimbledon champion Federer.

When told that the Australians had practically painted a target on his back, Wawrinka took it all in his stride. Truth be told he’s probably used to teams coming after him in Davis Cup ties.

“For sure, they are going to try and win the two points from the second [ranked] player in Switzerland, but that’s not the most important for us,” said Wawrinka at Tuesday’s press conference.

Today, however, Stan had little to say as he hit up with teammate Marco Chiudinelli on centre court. But the action was on the outer courts where Federer was.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion was happy to hit washing baskets of balls with Swiss team rookie Alexander Sadecky and Stephane Bohli.

Federer capably handled being double teamed by his teammates, as a media throng gathered on the sidelines, multiplying by the minute.

Usually a serene playground for Sydney’s financially elite, the Royal Sydney Golf Club’s ambience was interrupted by the media and a smattering of club members who were intent on catching a glimpse and hopefully a moment with Federer.

And he didn’t disappoint. At the end of practice he stopped to sign autographs for a group of kids and answered questions tossed at him by the media. (Watch the video)

He playfully asked the kids questions and for a tip on how to play this weekend, joking with the kids, “What’s the tip? I need a tip right now.”

Hewitt would disagree with this.

“I haven’t seen a lot that Roger hasn’t been able to do, so he’s as close to Superman as it comes in tennis,” Hewitt said on Tuesday.

Time will tell whether or not Superman can save his team from relegation this weekend. For all the Grand Slams, tournaments and accolades that Federer has accumulated, he is yet to be part of a winning Davis Cup team.

And if it’s going to happen, it needs to happen soon.

In Wawrinka he has a teammate who he can rely on. The two are both ranked in the top 20 and are good friends. They have also won an Olympic gold for doubles – they are a formidable duo.

Their likely opponents are a warrior and an emerging star.

Hewitt joked on Tuesday he’ll have to play above his ranking of 188 if the Australians are to succeed. He has a habit of reserving his best for Davis Cup, so rankings aren’t relevant here.

At Wimbledon Tomic proved that he is capable of withstanding pressure and he loves the big moments. But can he take down the great Federer or, as his captain has directed, Wawrinka?

We’ll find out on Friday and Sunday. Today these two proud teams were separated by metres, this week we will find out just how much really separates these players.

Tomic up first versus Wawrinka

Australia has been given the best possible chance to get their Davis Cup World qualifying tie against Switzerland off to a winning start with Bernard Tomic to play Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening match.

Swiss world No.19 Wawrinka was paired with Wimbledon quarterfinalist Tomic for the opening fixture on Royal Sydney’s grass courts on Friday with Lleyton Hewitt to play world No.3 Roger Federer in the second match.

Hewitt and Chris Guccione have been named to play in the doubles against Federer and Wawrinka on Saturday.

While only ranked 59 in the world, Tomic will fancy his chances against Wawrinka who comes into the tie under an injury cloud and with few outstanding results on grass.

Six-time Wimbledon champion Federer has a 17-8 playing record against Hewitt, but the South Australian did enjoy victory in their last match on grass in 2010.

The reverse ties on Sunday begin with Tomic playing Federer followed by Hewitt against Wawrinka.

Hewitt said he was fit, rearing to go and looking forward to renewing his rivalry with the 16-time Grand Slam champion.

“It’s been what I’ve been working towards in terms of getting my game up to scratch and my body as close to 100 per cent right to take on one of the greats,” Hewitt said.

“It’s going to be a tough match – hopefully Bernie can get us off to a good start against Stan on the grass tomorrow and then I can go out there and take Roger on.”

While Wawrinka confirmed he still was not at 100 per cent, having been battling a foot injury, there was unfortunately for the Australians no such qualms for Federer despite his gruelling five set loss to Novak Djokovic in the US Open smeifinals on Sunday.

“I’m not sore – sorry to disappoint you I’m feeling good, really good actually,” Federer said.

The winner of the tie advances to the Davis Cup World Group for 2012 while the loser will be forced to battle it out in zonal qualifiers for a chance to enter the elite competition again in 2013.
