Coach Carlos Rodriguez tells Titan Sports that he will continue to work with Li Na in 2013. Rodriguez, who once coached seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin, began to work with Li in August.
“We are going to play about 18 tournaments this season and Shenzhen is an ideal event to kick it off,” Rodriguez said.
Under Rodriguez, Li reached the final of Montreal, won Cincinnati, reached the semis at the China Open, and qualified for the year-end WTA Championships. The world No. 7 will begin her 2013 season at the new WTA tournament in Shenzhen.
Captain Jaite excludes del Potro from Davis Cup tie

Argentine Davis Cup captain Martin Jaite decides to exclude top player Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina’s first-round tie against Germany because he claims the world No. 7 did not meet a deadline for declaring his eligibility.
The Argentine press reported that Jaite had given a deadline of December 10 to all players to confirm their availability for the tie, which takes place on February 1-3. Del Potro was said to have asked or 10 more days to decide, but according Jaite, he did not respond, so he decided to exclude him.
“The rules have to be for everyone,” Jaite told DPA. “We were very clear about it.”
Del Potro said at a press conference this week that he only learned of Jaite’s decision through the media, and that he wants to meet with Jaite as soon as possible. He and Jaite have not seen eye to eye on team policies in the past.
Franco Davin, who is del Potro’s private coach, told ESPN: “It was two months, 50 days before the tie, I didn’t think it was something to decide now whether or not you are [going to play].”
Del Potro has said in the past that he does not like to play first-round ties on clay, as it messes up his form during the hard-court season. Davin added that the captain and player might not be able to solve their problems.
“It’s hard, it’s difficult,” Davin said. “I think it’s a tricky little thing these last few days of things that were spoken, messages that ‘I told you before or I told you after’ and that does not help.”
Argentina has played two Davis Cup finals the past five years, but the team experienced internal conflicts during each run, most notably between veteran David Nalbandian and del Potro. Del Potro came under heavy criticism in Argentina during his nation’s semifinal loss at home in September to the Czech Republic, when Jaite learned though others that del Potro had decided not to play a must-win match against Tomas Berdych due to pain in his left wrist.

David Ferrer will not play Spain’s first-round Davis Cup tie against Canada, and Nicolas Almagro also may opt out. Spain, which reached the 2012 final, will face Canada in Vancouver on February 1-3. Rafael Nadal is also doubtful after pulling out of the Australian Open, saying that he aims to return in Acapulco, which begins at the end of February. However, Nadal did add that he may be available for the tournament before then.
“This year I will play in Doha,” Ferrer told Sport 360 at the exhibition in Abu Dhabi. “So Doha, Auckland and Melbourne, because I will not play the first tie of Davis Cup. I can’t play everything and I need to rest after the Australian Open. We have to play best of five sets there and after that I would like to rest.”
Almagro said he was unsure of his availability. “I need to think because I had many problems last year with my shoulder and it was really tough. I had eight infiltrations in my shoulder during the year and I don’t want to play like this again. I want to be ready to fight all the matches, all the weeks. But Davis Cup is special, Davis Cup is another emotions, many great moments and we’ll see.”
