SERENA HANDED TRICKY WIMBLEDON DRAW

Serena Williams's quest for a 22nd Grand Slam title will be far from straightforward, after Friday's Wimbledon draw placed a number a potential banana skins in her path.

Two-time champion Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska join defending champion Williams in the trickier top half, as do a number of other familiar faces.

The No.1 seed will open against a qualifier before a potential second-round date with compatriot Christina McHale or former World No.5 Daniela Hantuchova. After that, a third-round rematch with Heather Watson, who famously pushed her so close at the same stage 12 months ago, looms. Also in her quarter are US Open conqueror Roberta Vinci, Sloane Stephens and Caroline Wozniacki.

Radwanska starts her latest major title tilt against All England Club debutante Kateryna Kozlova. Should the seedings hold, the Pole will face Caroline Garcia in the third round and then Johanna Konta or Dominika Cibulkova in the last 16.

Kvitova, who fell in the third round last year, will need to be wary of another early exit after being placed in a section with Ekaterina Makarova and Barbora Strycova.

Last year's finalist, Garbiñe Muguruza, finds herself seeded No.2 this time around and has a golden opportunity for a deep run in an open bottom half. She faces the mercurial Camila Giorgi first up, and should she clear her opening hurdles, tests against Lucie Safarova, Samantha Stosur, Carla Suárez Navarro and most intriguingly five-time champion Venus Williams could lie in wait.

No.4 seed Angelique Kerber is projected to meet Muguruza in the semifinals, but having been placed in a quarter with Simona Halep and the in-from Madison Keys is unlikely to be looking that far ahead.

A fascinating draw threw together several eye-catching first-round match-ups, headlined by former World No.1 Wozniacki's meeting with two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Safarova and doubles partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands also clash, and No.7 seed Belinda Bencic faces former semifinalist Tsvetana Pironkova.

AZARENKA WITHDRAWS FROM WIMBLEDON

Great Britain - On Thursday, Wimbledon announced that former No.1 Victoria Azarenka had withdrawn from the tournament due to a knee injury.

Azarenka would have been the No.6 seed, resulting in a reshuffling of the seeds, which sees five-time Venus Williams champion move up into the Top 8, hometown favorite Johanna Konta move up into the Top 16, and Andrea Petkovic round out the Top 32.

MUGURUZA'S LOVE-HATE WIMBLEDON TAKE

Great Britain - The last time Garbiñe Muguruza sat at the dais in the main interview room at the All England Club, she was was still reeling from her first ever Slam final, a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Serena Williams at Wimbledon last year. As she walked in for her pre-tournament press conference on Saturday, Muguruza could not shake a look of wide-eyed wonder.

Boy, a lot can change in 12 months. She is now a reigning Slam champion after winning the French Open just three weeks ago and is up to a career-high ranking of No.2. When Serena beat her to win Wimbledon last year, the title gave the American her fourth consecutive major title. Now Serena comes in trying to avoid going 0 for 4 at the Slams since that win, and it's Muguruza who looks poised to make a run at the No.1 ranking later this summer.

Muguruza has played one tournament since Paris, which ended in a first round exit at the Mallorca Open. It was a quick transition from soggy red clay to the sunny Spanish grass courts, but the week in Mallorca finally gave Muguruza a chance to let her Roland Garros triumph settle in.

"Even though I lost, we stayed there, two, three days to train there and enjoy. I think maybe that was the days where we had more fun and we were talking about the lob [on match point], the matches, the rain, everything. We were joking. But I've been pretty calm."

Muguruza is seeded No.2 at Wimbledon and she leads a bottom half of the draw that looks very similar to her Paris draw. The big names and in-form players are almost all with Serena in the top half. If Muguruza can get past a very dangerous first round against Camila Giorgi on Monday, she should find herself deep into the second week. The question is whether she can put her French Open win behind her and find her grass game.

"I don't feel different because I'm so convinced that, not because winning French Open I'm going to come here and I'm going to win every match," Muguruza said. "I've been in the situation where you win a lot of matches, and then suddenly, you lose. You're like, 'Oh, I thought I was going to win.'

"I don't take anything for granted. I'm going for the first match, like everyone else, from zero."

Muguruza's run to the Wimbledon final last year was a shock - not just to those in the press box, but to Garbiñe herself.

"I had a love and hate with Wimbledon because at the beginning was hard for me."

The fact is, she has never been particularly comfortable on grass and she has never tried to hide it. Last year she rolled through a difficult draw that included wins over Caroline Wozniacki, Timea Bacsinszky, Angelique Kerber, and Agnieszka Radwanska to make her first major final. And still she will need time to accept that her game excels on the turf.

"When I was younger, a lot of people were saying, 'I think you will play good on grass,'" Muguruza said. "I'm like, 'There's no way, I hate grass. I'm horrible.' In time, I agree [with them]. I think my style of game helps. But I don't feel yet [it] is my comfort zone. I would say more clay or more hard because I play more.

"But I think my style of game, if I get to be more perfectionist on that surface, more chance to play more tournaments or everything, I can play good, yeah. I feel I can play well in every surface. I can adapt."

Whether Muguruza has had enough time practicing on the grass remains to be seen. While her powerful game plays into the surface, she can be very unsure of her movement.

"I think sometimes it's hard to run on grass. On clay you can slide. On hard court, you can grab more (have more traction) here. It's like sometimes I'm too tall, I don't know, feel weird sometimes."

The attention will be focused on Muguruza throughout the fortnight, especially after Rafael Nadal's withdrawal from the tournament due to injury. Muguruza joked that she had a deer-in-the-headlights look when she learned Nadal pulled out.

"For sure, people with me are more looking at what I'm doing, will be more watching me," she said. "But I think that's fine. It's a good sign. I like it. I'll try to do my best.

And then, as if to put a final emphasis on the unexpected results in her career, Muguruza laughed and added: "But I was so happy, finally this year, I'm like, I did better than Nadal in French Open.

"I'm like, This is so weird."

Współczuć to mogłeś mniej więcej rok temu, teraz fani Any są już pogodzeni z losem i oglądają takie spotkania z uśmiechem politowania.

Swoją drogą, każdy trener ma taki wymarzony mecz, oddający jego filozofię. Guardiola to klepanie, szukanie luk do prostopadłych podań i ciągła dominacja, Mourinho to perfekcyjna destrukcja i błyskawiczne kontry, Phil Jackson ma swoje trójkąty i instynktowne reagowanie. Można tak długo wymieniać, aż w końcu dojdziemy do Nigela Searsa, tu mamy bezbarwne, wywołujące odruch wymiotny granie, całkowity brak pomysłu i uzależnienie wyniku spotkania od postawy rywala.

Myślę, że dziś Serbka w 100% oddała filozofię swojego coacha.

E2: Caro też błysnęła. Poirytowana swoją postawą, dobrą grą rywalki i kilkoma decyzjami Lahyaniego zagrała trzeciego seta na totalnej wy***ce strzelając ze wszystkiego co wpadło na rakietę. O ile tenis już jest na miejscu tak głowa zdecydowanie nie jest gotowa na poważne granie. Ma jeszcze trochę czasu niby...

Przynajmniej na debla będą miały siły.

Muguruza już w domu, gładko zjechała z Cepelovą. Dziś zobaczyłbym jeszcze Bouchard i Kontę, ale jeśli będą grać Polacy to oczywiście zostanę przy Euro.

Oglądałem mecz Szwiedowej ze Switoliną i mecz mógł się podobać. Dużo wygrywających z obu stron, co oczywiście nie jest zaskoczeniem w przypadku tej pary. Jeśli Slava nie będzie miała większych przestojów w grze, jak to u niej często się zdarza, to z Sabiną powinna powalczyć.

Ale widowisko dały Konta z Bouchard. Kanadyjka skoncentrowana, pewna siebie, pozytywnie energiczna, trafiająca. Duży spokój zachowywała, nawet przy sieci coś skończyła. W drugiej partii to 1-6 jest trochę mylące, podniosła poziom Konta w tej części bardzo wysoko, ale było sporo wyrównanych gemów. Brytyjka pokazała dobry tenis, ostre kończące uderzenia, ale trema Ją trochę zjadła, a Genie zaprezentowała się zbyt dobrze.

Dzięki Bouchard nie zobaczyłem gola, ale nie żałuję. Oby grała tak dalej, bo naprawdę przyjemnie patrzeć i przypomnieć sobie, że Kanadyjka umie tak dobrze odbijać piłeczkę.

Jedyną skazą była fatalna praca liniowych. Londyńska Tower powinna wypełnić się krzykami tych ślepych dyletantów. Tylu korekt ze stołka nie widziałem odkąd śledzę tenis.
