Laura Robson (ur. 21 stycznia 1994 w Melbourne) – brytyjska tenisistka, srebrna medalistka Letnich Igrzysk Olimpijskich 2012 w grze mieszanej, zdobywczyni nagrody WTA w kategorii „Debiut Roku” (2012).

W finale ulegli jednak Wiktoryi Azarance i Maksowi Mirnemu 6:2, 3:6, 8-10.

Jej największymi sukcesem były czwarte rundy wielkoszlemowych US Open 2012 i Wimbledonu 2013.

We wrześniu 2012 roku osiągnęła pierwszy finał turnieju tenisowego zaliczanego do cyklu WTA. Miało to miejsce w chińskim Kantonie, gdzie w finale uległa Hsieh Su-wei. W marcu 2013 roku osiągnęła w Miami pierwszy finał zawodów deblowych. Razem z Lisą Raymond przegrały z Nadieżdą Pietrową i Katariną Srebotnik 1:6, 6:7(2).

Styl gry

Cytuj:
Robson plays left-handed, with a two-handed backhand. One of her strengths is her "dominant" serve. She has a strong game from the back of the court and is also noted for having an aggressive forehand return. However, she has been criticised for having "poor lateral movement". She has been praised for showing "extraordinary poise", and having "the attitude and technique required of a leading player". Commentator Simon Reed said that she "has every tool she needs", and former Grand Slam champion Pat Cash called her "a special talent" who "seems to have all the attributes to progress". Current WTA player Ana Ivanovic said that Robson "hits the ball really, really hard", former top British player Samantha Smith said that "she doesn't have any weaknesses at all", and Serena Williams stated that Robson is an "all-around good player". Robson's favourite surface to play on is grass and her favourite shot is her forehand down the line.

A dlaczego ona nie gra w Auckland (bo, chyba była zgłoszona)?

W tamtym sezonie wycofywała się z turniejów przed US Open z powodu urazu prawego nadgarstka.

Dziwne to wszystko.

Robson blow ahead of Aussie Open as wrist injury forces Brit out of Hobart International

Laura Robson has sadly confirmed her presence among the alarmingly long list of players with early-season injuries ahead of the Australian Open, pulling out of the Hobart International with further wrist problems.

Her inability to complete her first-round match against Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer - having made a bright start and leading 6-4, 0-2 - casts doubt about whether she will make the starting line in Melbourne next Monday. It is conceivable that there may not even be a British representative in the women’s event.

Obrazek
Blow: Laura Robson had to retire from the Hobart International due to a wrist injury.

Obrazek Obrazek
Fitness fight: Robson has just a week to get ready for the start of the Australian Open.

Robson sounded forlorn on her Twitter feed later, describing it as a ‘less than wonderful day’, which is not surprising as wrist injuries are about the worst thing a tennis player can suffer.

She pulled out of last week’s season curtain-raiser, the Auckland Open, with the problem but seemed confident it was a precautionary move and that she would be able to take her place in the season’s opening Grand Slam. British No 1 Robson has been cursed by illness and injuries through the teenage years of her career, which draw to a close next week when she turns 20.

Especially concerning is that the setback comes at a time when she has been working with an entirely fresh team, trying another support set-up for what will be the most important phase of her career.

She spent much of the off- season at the academy of veteran American coach Nick Saviano with new trainers and hitting partners, although it is not known whether what has happened is attributable in any way to her new regime.

Obrazek
Out: Robson was playing Yanina Wickmayer when her wrist injury got the better of her.

The bad news was not what Michael Downey, the Canadian who has taken over as chief executive at the Lawn Tennis Association, would have wished to hear as he began his first week in the hotseat at Roehampton. Broad progress in the women’s game has been an encouraging feature for the LTA in recent years and it will be strongly hoped that Heather Watson and Jo Konta can make it into the main draw.

At the moment Konta’s ranking of 113 is just outside its entry cut-off, although the amount of injuries in general on the WTA Tour means she may get straight in. Otherwise she would have to go through the qualifying event, most likely alongside Watson.

The Channel Islander’s difficult 2013 has consigned her to the preliminary event, although her form in Australia has been much improved.

After his second-round exit in the Qatar Open last week Andy Murray is expected to play two matches at the AAMI Classic exhibition event in Kooyong on Thursday and Friday against high-class opposition.

Obrazek
Hitting back: Andy Murray trains at Melbourne Park ahead of the Australian Open as coach Ivan Lendl looks on.

Britain’s No 2 and No 3 players, Dan Evans and James Ward, will play in the qualifying event, with Evans hoping to repeat his success of making the main field in the Middle East last week.

Debutant Tara Moore will join Robson — fitness permitting — Watson and Konta in the GB squad for next month’s Fed Cup tie in Hungary.

Moore, ranked 212 in the world, has been called up following the retirement of Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong.

Wade urges Robson caution

Virginia Wade has urged current British number one Laura Robson not to risk ruining her season by playing with an injured wrist.

Obrazek
Laura Robson: Wrist problem has made her a doubt for the Australian Open.

Robson was forced to quit her opening match of the new season in Hobart on Monday, suffering pain in her left wrist - her racket hand. The troublesome joint had ruled her out of last week's WTA tournament in Auckland.

The Australian Open starts next week and Robson has plenty of ranking points to defend, but former Wimbledon champion Wade says if the wrist isn't properly healed it won't be worth jeopardising the rest of the year by playing in Melbourne.

"As a player you want to play the Grand Slams. You don't want to miss out," said Wade, who won the Australian Open back in 1972.

"But I think you have to err on the side of caution. You have to understand whether an injury is getting worse. If it's worse at the end of a match than it was at the beginning, you shouldn't be playing."

Wade, who will be a pundit on British Eurosport's coverage of this year's tournament, added: "I had a wrist problem at one stage when I was quite young. It cleared up but every player gets this at some stage.

"The problem is if you have tendonitis and keep aggravating it, it just goes on and on.

"Look at some of the players who have had wrist problems - they've been out of the game for long periods, people like (Juan Martin) Del Potro and (Kim) Clijsters.

"They can take nine months to heal. You can usually get two hours out of it in a day but it won't go away."

If the problems continue, Wade says Robson may have to make technical changes in a bid to combat the problem.

"You might have to make some adjustments to your game," she added.

"If you have an extreme back bend on your serve and have back pain, you have to start modifying that. It's the same thing with the wrist.

"It's not that she's got such wristy shots though; maybe she just needs to heal it."

Australian Open 2014: Laura Robson fit for Melbourne opener

British number one Laura Robson says she feels "no pain" from a recent wrist injury and is fit to start her Australian Open campaign in Melbourne.

Robson, who turns 20 later this month, retired against Yanina Wickmayer in Hobart on Monday but has been practising here without any problems.

"It's feeling good," said the Brit. "I think day by day it's getting better."

She faces Wimbledon semi-finalist and 18th seed, Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, in round one at 00:00 GMT on Monday.

The left-hander, ranked 46th, described the injury to her left wrist as "a bit of tendonitis and a bit of ligament issues".

She told BBC Sport: "We've seen some really good doctors and I'm feeling good with how I'm playing.

"I'm hitting my forehand really well, which was the initial problem with my wrist, so I'm looking forward to Monday."

Robson pulled out of her first scheduled tournament of the season in Auckland as she waited for the injury to heal.

She added: "I felt it near the end of the off-season, around the middle of December, and saw a doctor in Miami and it just didn't quite heal like it was supposed to, but it's all good now.

"No pain and I'm just really looking forward to playing Flipkens on Monday. It's going to be a tough one and she's a really tricky player."

Robson was hampered during the build-up to last year's US Open with an injury to her right wrist, but she is not concerned about a lack of match practice heading into Melbourne.

"I always love playing at Grand Slams," she said.

"It's going to be a tough one because I haven't had that much match practice this year, but I'm not worried.

"I've played points in practice and I managed to get a set-and-a-half in last week in Hobart, so that's not a big concern for me."

The former Wimbledon junior champion reached the third round at Melbourne Park last year, beating eighth seed Petra Kvitova in one of her biggest victories to date.

Australian Open: Laura Robson is hopeful she has found an ideal coaching set-up

Obrazek
Laura Robson says her wrist feels good at the moment.

Laura Robson says she is happy with her current coaching set-up and hopes it will prove to be a long-term arrangement.

The 19-year-old Brit has already worked with a succession of coaches and split from Miles Maclagan after only four months at the end of last season.

However, during the off-season she began working with veteran American coach Nick Saviano and 31-year-old former professional Jesse Witten, who will take on most of the responsibility at tournaments.

And Robson said: "I think Nick's a great coach and I think Jesse is someone great to travel with.

"I'd like to spend as much time as possible with them but it's one of those things where you never know how it's going to work out.

"I've got someone like Jesse who's great with all the tactical stuff and then, when I'm in Florida with Nick, he's fantastic with all the technical stuff.

"I'm still at that stage where I'm developing as a player and fine-tuning small details. Nick has so much experience with that and Jesse's learning from that and we're kind of working as a unit."

Some of the top male players are to work with high profile coaches this season but Robson does not plan to follow suit, although there is one former great who she might like to work with at some point.

"It would be good to have (Steffi) Graf, but I don't see her doing it," said Robson "It would be quite fun."

Robson happy with her form

Robson's preparations for the Australian Open have been severely hampered by a left wrist problem and she has not yet completed a match this season.

She pulled out midway through her first-round match in Hobart earlier this week but said: "I just wasn't quite ready to play a match and didn't want to make anything worse.

"It seems to be cleared up now, my wrist feels pretty good.

"I'm not someone who needs a load of practice to be able to play well, I've always been naturally quite good at hitting, I guess. I'm happy with how I'm playing right now."

Robson will begin her campaign on Monday against 18th seed Kirsten Flipkens, a surprise Wimbledon semi-finalist last year.

"I've seen her play quite a few times," said Robson. "I've never played her but she's a tricky player. She plays a lots of slices, comes in. It should be interesting."
