23-krotna zwyciężczyni turniejów wielkoszlemowych 1 września tego roku urodziła dziewczynkę. Ojcem dziecka jest amerykański biznesmen Alexis Ohanian. Teraz maleństwu zaczęły wyrzynać się ząbki, co przyprawia sportsmenkę o ból głowy. 36-letnia Williams chciałaby ulżyć dziecku, które ciągle płacze, ale wszystkie znane jej metody zawodzą.

Serena Williams is set to compete at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi against a yet-to-be confirmed opponent, Sport360 has learned.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has been away from tour since she won the Australian Open last January and has been on maternity leave since having her first child Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. in September.

Williams will play on Saturday December 30 at Zayed Sports City, in what is a massive boost for the tournament and tennis fans in the UAE. Her opponent hasn’t been announced but it is believed she will face a fellow Grand Slam champion.

The Abu Dhabi showpiece, taking place from December 28-30, had witnessed numerous withdrawals with Rafael Nadal , Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic all pulling out in recent days.

The trio were replaced by Roberto Bautista Agut, Kevin Anderson, and Andrey Rublev, respectively.

Ticket holders for day 3 can attend Williams’ match. This is the first time a women’s tennis match will take place at the MWTC.

The tournament is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Tickets for the MWTC are on sale at www.ticketmaster.ae and all Virgin Megastores across the UAE.

Former women's world number one Serena Williams has opened up on life as a mother and revealed for the first time the complications that marked the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia.

In an interview with American fashion magazine, Vogue, the 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed she had to endure a series of operations just days after her daughter was delivered via an emergency c-section.

After it was decided the safest option was to deliver Alexis Olympia by c-section, Williams began feeling unwell, complaining of a shortness of breath.

Williams, fearing she was suffering from a pulmonary embolism, insisted on a CT scan that showed a number of small blood clots on her lungs.

The pulmonary embolism then sparked a coughing fit that caused her caesarean section wound to re-open.


With the tennis star now fully recovered from the traumatic delivery, Williams admits she has found the first few months of motherhood a challenging experience.

“Sometimes I get really down and feel like, man, I can’t do this,” said Williams.

"I’ve broken down I don’t know how many times. Or I’ll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, Why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.”

Having made her playing comeback last month at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, Williams was targeting a Grand Slam return at the Australian Open, but the 36-year-old announced last week that she would not be defending her title in Melbourne.

“To be honest, there’s something really attractive about the idea of moving to San Francisco and just being a mom," says Williams.

“But not yet. Maybe this goes without saying, but it needs to be said in a powerful way: I absolutely want more Grand Slams. I’m well aware of the record books, unfortunately. It’s not a secret that I have my sights on 25.”

“At my age, I see the finish line. And when you see the finish line, you don’t slow down. You speed up.”

Serena Williams may not be where she wants to be right now in terms of competing on the tennis court, but she's quite sure of where she wants to go.

Williams, 36, just four months after giving birth to her first child, is driven to win Grand Slam title No. 25 and return to the No. 1 ranking in the world.

Once an afterthought for the top players, the Australian Open has become paramount in setting the tone for the rest of the season.

Williams decided this past Thursday not to defend her Australian Open title, having played only an exhibition match to Jelena Ostapenko after overcoming medical issues that cropped up after the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

"I don't want to just compete, I want to do far better than that and to do so, I will need a little more time," Williams said in the statement.

She needs only one more major title to equal the record held by Margaret Court, who won 13 of her 24 Grand Slam titles before the Open era began in 1968.

"I remember how stressed I was about getting to Grand Slam number 18, tying Chrissie [Evert] and Martina [Navratilova]," Williams said. "I had lost every Grand Slam that year. I was in the US Open, and Patrick [Mouratoglou], my coach, said, 'Serena, this doesn't make sense. You're so stressed about 18. Why not 30? Why not 40?' For me, that clicked. I won 18, 19 and 20 right after that.

"Why would I want to stand side by side when I can stand out on my own? I think sometimes women limit themselves. I'm not sure why we think that way, but I know that we're sometimes taught to not dream as big as men, not to believe we can be a president or a CEO, when in the same household, a male child is told he can be anything he wants. I'm so glad I had a daughter. I want to teach her that there are no limits."

Williams revealed in the interview that she had an emergency C-section after the baby's heart rate dropped. Williams then had a number of post-childbirth procedures after discovering several small blood clots had settled in her lungs.

It is not the first time that blood clots have caused complications for Williams. After she badly cut her foot in July 2010, a blood clot reached her lung in March 2011. The injuries kept her from competing for a year.

Williams told Vogue that her C-section incision reopened due to intense coughing spells, and that she had a filter inserted into a major vein to prevent blood clots from reaching her lungs.

"I was happy to change diapers," her husband, Alexis Ohanian, told Vogue, "but on top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder. Consider for a moment that your body is one of the greatest things on this planet, and you're trapped in it."

Williams told Vogue that motherhood has changed her, and it might help her on the court.

"Now that I'm 36 and I look at my baby, I remember that this was also one of my goals when I was little, before tennis took over, when I was still kind of a normal girl who played with dolls," Williams said.

"And actually, I think having a baby might help. When I'm too anxious I lose matches, and I feel like a lot of that anxiety disappeared when Olympia was born. Knowing I've got this beautiful baby to go home to makes me feel like I don't have to play another match. I don't need the money or the titles or the prestige. I want them, but I don't need them. That's a different feeling for me."

Williams remains driven, however, to return to the top spot in the world rankings, which is currently occupied by Simona Halep by a slim margin over Caroline Wozniacki and Garbine Muguruza.


"It's interesting," Williams told Vogue. "There hasn't been a clear No. 1 since I was there. It will be cool to see if I get there again, to what I call my spot -- where I feel I belong. I don't play to be the second best or the third best. If there's no clear No. 1, it's like, yeah, I can get my spot back. But if there is a clear No. 1, that's cool, too, because it's like, yeah, I'm gonna come for you."

Williams said she knows she is on the back side of her career, but warns opponents that that will not be an advantage for them.

"... I've been playing tennis since before my memories started," Williams told Vogue. "At my age, I see the finish line. And when you see the finish line, you don't slow down. You speed up."

MONTE CARLO, February 27, 2018 - Amid all the Monegask glamour and glitter, the trongs of sports personalities, the media pack and the expectant atmosphere that accompanies high-profile events, the 2018 edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards, the Oscars in sports, threw up few surprises: Roger Federer was crowned Sportsman of the Year and Serena Williams Sportswoman of the Year.

Hollywood-star Benedict Cumberbatch and TV broadcaster Kate Abdo co-hosted a star-studded evening in downtown Monte Carlo. On the eve of the awards ceremony, the British actor had revealed the Active Communities Network as the winner of the Sport for Good Award.

HSH Prince Albert welcomed sports’ aristocracy to the principality before Cumberbatch cracked a few jokes, calling Roger Federer ‘a legendary Basel fan.’ King Roger’s iconic status was never in doubt nor were his credentials. The Swiss was elected Sportsman of the Year, becoming the most decorated Laureus winner in history. He also won the Comeback Award.

In 2017, the Swiss waved his magic around, proving that he could even overcome time itself. With a ruthless display of supreme efficiency, athleticism and vintage style, all stemming from extensive training sessions with his low-key coach Pierre Paganini over the course of two decades, he won a record 19th Grand Slam men’s singles title last year. At the age of 36, his conquest was nigh impossible and almost freakishly good, defeating Roger Nadal, tensely, and Marin Cilic, in a bedazzled glow, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon finals respectively.

As his career is reaching a twilight, the Swiss star has peaked, with longevity a key to his later development and enduring success. "I want to give a shout-out to Rafa," said Federer, referring to his rivalry with the Spaniard. “He is friend and a great athlete."

"This Award means the world to me," said Federer.

In a light-hearted moment a journalist, who was to return home to his wife, asked Federer if he had any human flaws. “Exactly, just tell her there are a lot of things that I am not perfect [about],” admitted Federer. “When you are a husband, a dad, you don’t do everything perfect - I will tell you that. It is a battle on a daily basis in a good way, but to always stay calm, it is almost impossible. I try to be the best dad I can, the best husband I can, the best tennis player. I try to learn from mistakes. I am definitely not perfect, so easy answer.”

Tennis was the star of the evening and Serena Williams triumphed as the Sportswoman of the Year, overcoming strong contention from South Africa’s Caster Semenya and the United States’ Katie Ledecky. In 2017, Williams enjoyed an extraordinary year, trumping Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam women’s singles titles after defeating her sister Venus at the Australian Open. At the age of 35, she topped world tennis again, a testimony to her determination, grit and willpower. Last September Williams gave birth to her daughter. Following severe birth complications, the tennis player drew attention to the maternal mortality rate among black women in the United States.

In other categories, Mercedes-AMG Petronas won the Team of the Year, trumping Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo. Golfer Sergio Garcia was the Breakthrough of the Year after his Masters success. Vendee Globe-winning sailor Armel Le Cleac’h received the Action Sportsperson accolade.

There was more Swiss success as Marcel Hug, tripe T54 World Para Champion in London, won the Disability Award. Hug also excelled over the longer distance in 2017, winning marathons in among other New York and Berlin

Chapecoense prevailed as Best Sporting Moment, voted by fans from around the world. The club is Brazil’s eternal champion, a heavy tag to burden, but the Brazilians didn’t let up after the devastating plane crash in 2016 - what should have been a seminal moment with the Copa Sudamericana final turned into a nightmare in the hills of Colombia. Last year, they set on a path of revival and comeback, maintaining their spot in the Brazilian topflight and winning the Campeonato Catarinense. Crash survivor Jackson Follmann said the Award was 'a tribute to those who had left and those who had helped rebuild."

Edwin Moses was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award following in the footsteps of among others Pele, Niki Lauda and Sebastian Coe. At the 1976 and 1984 Olympic games, he won the gold medal at the 400 metres hurdles. Moses was the first chairman of the Laureus Academy and has been an advocate for humanitarianism and peace. "It is an honour," commented Moses.

We wtorek na uroczystej gali w Monte Carlo ogłoszono triumfatorów nagród Laureusa. Wyróżnienie to w sportowym światku postrzegane jest na równi z filmowymi Oscarami. Statuetki dla sportowców roku otrzymali tenisiści - Roger Federer i Serena Williams.

Nagrody Laureusa rozdawane są od 2000 roku. Pomysłodawcą był ówczesny prezydent RPA, Nelson Mandela. Kandydatów zgłaszają dziennikarze z całego świata. Laureatów wybiera panel złożony z 55 byłych słynnych sportowców.
Podczas środowej gali ogłaszania laureatów za rok 2017 największymi wygranymi zostali przedstawiciele tenisa. Najlepszym sportowcem minionych 12 miesięcy wybrano Rogera Federera. W sezonie 2017 Szwajcar wygrał wielkoszlemowe Australian Open oraz Wimbledon, a także turnieje w Indian Wells, Miami, Halle i w Bazylei.

It’s her favorite part about playing professional tennis, Serena Williams revealed Thursday night.

“It’s that initial walk onto the crowd when it’s just you and your opponent and everyone’s there to see just you two play,” she said. “I forgot about that.”

She also forgot, or likely did not see coming, the sudden rush of emotion she would experience before walking onto the court for her first match back on the WTA Tour after a 14-month maternity leave and the September birth of daughter Alexis Olympia.

“I almost cried,” she said. “I texted [my husband] Alexis and I was like, ‘Is it normal I want to cry?’ I really missed her, but playing at night really helped because she goes to bed, so I know she’s asleep, [that] I can’t play with her right now.”

It is indeed a new world greeting the perhaps greatest tennis player of all time as she navigates life as a working mother, a 36-year-old woman who, for all of her success on court as the winner of more Grand Slam singles titles (23) than any man or woman in modern history, is also a helpless puddle of love when it comes to her baby’s “toothless smile.”

“I’ve never done this before and I know I’m going to make mistakes and I’m okay with that,” she said of her new routine. “And I’m just going to be ready for what happens.”

There was really no way of knowing what to expect before her first-round victory over Zarina Diyas, a player without the weapons to compete with the old Serena but was theoretically capable of beating the version we had last seen playing doubles for the U.S. Fed Cup team.

As it turned out, Williams made some serious strides in a month and was fitter, sharper and, ultimately, a lot closer to the old Serena than most expected. Throw in the fact that Williams had, in fact, suffered life-threatening complications after childbirth, which the public only learned about in January, and Thursday night was indeed remarkable.

It was the shots she said she normally makes “nine times out of 10” but that she now missed more frequently that was the biggest difference for her. Her timing and stamina? All good, she said.

Williams, who will play No. 29 seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in a second-round match Saturday, had 27 unforced errors against Diyas and she only converted five of 11 break-point chances. But like always, she willed herself to win the big points. And even when she was missing, she said, Williams is now playing with a freedom she has never before experienced.

“It’s different,” she said. “I’m playing with nothing to lose. I only can gain. I could have been playing like that for years. But it’s a real joy to be out here. Sometimes I think about those moments I was in the hospital and not even knowing how serious it was until later. Just being able to come through that makes me feel that no matter what happens, I know that I’m capable of being strong [and] no matter if I win or lose, that there’s so much more to my life.”

Playing unseeded for the first time since 2011, without a first-round bye, it’s all part of this new phase she said she knows will not be easy. But then, that’s okay.

“I was thinking about it and I feel like when you’re young and you first come on tour and you’re excited to play and you want to play the top players to see where your game is, that’s really how I felt [Thursday],” Williams said. “I’m in this tournament and I wanted to see where I am and I’m just excited to be here, on the grounds of a tournament, to be playing, and it’s really fun.”

The “R” word was apparently never in play, Serena said. Leaving the game she loves will happen when she wakes up and just doesn’t feel it any longer or wants to spend more time with her daughter.

“It just wasn’t my time to retire yet, even though it would have been a great way to retire,” she said. “I just felt my story wasn’t over and I definitely wanted to come back.”

While she is certainly not where she would like to be, she’s getting there, she said. And she vowed to be patient.

“That’s one thing I realize,” she said. “I’m not going to be there today or next week or tomorrow, but I will eventually get there. At some point, I need to start and jump and fly and I can do it. Every day is going to be a challenge for me, but I know I’ll overcome it and I’m ready to overcome
