RADWANSKA'S SINGAPORE HOPES ON HOLD

WUHAN, China - Agnieszka Radwanska could have qualified for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global by reaching the final of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open this week, but those hopes were dashed as she was stunned in her opening match by Caroline Garcia.

The No.5-seeded Radwanska had her chances in the match - she was two games away leading 6-3, 4-3, she led 4-2 in the third set and even served for it at 6-5 in the decider - but at the end of it all Garcia, who had saved a match point to beat Venus Williams the day before, was just too tough, eventually closing the center court thriller out after two hours and 42 minutes, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

"It was a tough match from beginning to end. I was just worse today in those two points in the end," Radwanska said. "Of course I had my chances before that, but game by game and point by point we had a lot of good rallies, and I could have done better and stepped forward in certain moments.

"But she was hitting the ball very hard and serving very well the whole match, especially in the important moments. She kept a really high level. She was just playing really, really well today."

Radwanska's quest to qualify for the WTA Finals will now have to wait another week.

"When I went on court today I wasn't really thinking about it, but I knew I was almost there," she said. "This could have made a huge difference for me, but hopefully I can do better in Beijing."

As for Garcia, the win over the World No.6 was her third and biggest Top 10 win - she had beaten a No.9-ranked Jelena Jankovic and a No.8-ranked Angelique Kerber during the clay court season.

"It's a pretty different game playing Venus one day and Radwanska the next day, but I just play the same game from my side," Garcia said. "On the court I just always try to play aggressively, no matter who the opponent is in front of me. I really try to believe in myself and believe I can do it.

"Against players like this, you have to go out there and just believe in yourself."

Radwanska wasn't the only player to see their WTA Finals bids go on hold - Ana Ivanovic, fresh off her fourth WTA title of the year in Tokyo and the No.9 seed here, was trailing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in their first round match, 7-5, 6-5, when she had to retire from the match due to a thigh injury.

Ivanovic would have earned her spot in Singapore by winning the title in Wuhan this week.

Other winners in the day session included No.10 seed Jelena Jankovic, who got by Christina McHale, 6-4, 6-4, as well as Garbiñe Muguruza, Casey Dellacqua, Karolina Pliskova and Mona Barthel.

Halep już na aucie, podobnie jak mdlejąco-wymiotująca Serena, która zrezygnowała po 11 gemach z Cornet, która zagra z inną moją faworytką, Flipkens - raczej powinna sobie poradzić, bo Kirsten gra biednie w tym roku. Garcia zarobiła u mnie kolejne punkty za pogonienie Radwy, a Elinka ma na rozkładzie tutaj już dwie trudne rywalki i teraz przed nią Muguruza.

THE UPSETS CONTINUE: SHARAPOVA OUT

Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, who was all but out of the game a few years ago, scored the biggest win of her career at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Wednesday.

WUHAN, China - Maria Sharapova became the latest favorite to fall at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, succumbing to Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky - and with Serena Williams and Simona Halep out as well, the Singapore hopefuls are hoping to snatch up the points those three won't be winning.

But first there's the matter of the biggest win of Bacsinszky's career, a 7-6(3), 7-5 stunner over the No.4-seeded Sharapova. In the match the pair went toe-to-toe from the baseline with their big groundies, but Bacsinszky was just a little bit more consistent overall, putting together a +3 differential of winners to unforced errors (25 to 22) while Sharapova compiled a negative differential of -6 (37 to 43).

Sharapova, one of the biggest fighters in the game, certainly had her chances in the second set - she was up a break twice, even leading 3-1 early on - but Bacsinszky managed to seal the deal.

It has been a long road back for Bacsinszky, who peaked at No.37 in the world back in 2010 but who went as low as No.578 in 2012 after a series of nagging injuries and struggling to grind her way back up. But grinding is just what she's done this year - she came into 2014 ranked No.237 and is currently at No.61 after consistent success on the ITF Women's Circuit and in WTA qualies, and a couple of deep runs in WTA main draws as well, including making the semis of Guangzhou last week.

And now a win over the World No.4 - the biggest win of her career. Prior to this she had two Top 10 wins, over a No.8-ranked Daniela Hantuchova at Antwerp in 2008 and a No.10-ranked Victoria Azarenka at Beijing in 2010. Both of those wins came via retirement though, making this even better.

Sharapova joins Williams and Halep on the sidelines. They're the only three players to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global so far, and with all three of them out, it's a perfect opportunity for the other players in the hunt to snatch up valuable points this week.

One of those players is Angelique Kerber, who was also one of the early winners on Wednesday. Kerber, currently No.10 on the Road To Singapore leaderboard and the No.7 seed this week, needed just 64 minutes to beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova over on Court 1, 6-1, 6-1. Her performance was actually so dominant that she held game points in both of the games she lost during the match.

Other early winners were Alizé Cornet, who rallied from 3-1 down in the third set to beat Belgian wildcard Kirsten Flipkens in two hours and 46 minutes, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3, Caroline Garcia, who outserved CoCo Vandeweghe, 6-3, 6-2, blasting 11 aces to the American's eight, and Elina Svitolina, who advanced past Garbiñe Muguruza via walkover when the Spaniard withdrew due to gastritis.

The day before, Cornet got past No.1 seed Serena Williams when she had to retire late in the first set due to a viral illness. Though it wasn't a complete victory, it was still a victory, and Cornet has now beaten the American three times this year - the first to do that since Justine Henin in 2007.

"The first two victories I had on Serena were big fights and I played amazing matches, so I think I deserve those victories. Yesterday was just a little bit of luck," Cornet said. "I don't think I have like a special thing in my mind. I just have the right tactics, go out there and believe in myself.

"But even if I had a magic trick, I wouldn't tell it to anyone. I'd keep it for myself!"

KVITOVA TWO WINS FROM SINGAPORE

WUHAN, China - Petra Kvitova beat Caroline Garcia to reach the semifinals of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open and come within two wins of qualifying for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. If she wins the title this week she'll make it into the WTA's crown jewel event.

Kvitova, who had gone to three tough sets the day before against the red-hot Karolina Pliskova, had another surging WTA Rising Star across the net from her this time - Garcia had taken out a pair of all-time greats en route to the quarterfinals here in Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska.

But the No.3-seeded Kvitova was just too efficient this time around, holding all 10 of her service games and getting one break per set to put Garcia away in just an hour and 21 minutes, 6-3, 6-4.

She was also just too solid in the stats, putting together a -1 differential of winners to unforced errors (23 to 24). Meanwhile, Garcia was a little too erratic on the day with a -9 differential (13 to 22).

"I know Garcia had a great week here, that she beat Venus and Aga 7-6 in the third. You always have to be prepared for a fight," Kvitova said. "I knew that she can play really well, and that she can serve well and play very aggressively from the baseline, so I knew that I had to be ready for her.

"It was quite humid and hot today, and I was really sweating a lot, but the court feels faster, which is something that probably suits my game a lot. And I'm serving well, so that's helpful too."

But in the bigger picture, Kvitova is now just two wins from becoming the fourth player to qualify for the WTA Finals. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep are already set in stone.

"Hopefully I'm going to be there," Kvitova said earlier in the week. "I've heard a lot of positive things about Singapore and I think it's going to be great - I'm really looking forward to it if I qualify.

"We have legends and rising stars and more doubles teams there, as well. I think it's going to be a big show. The WTA Finals is the best in the end of the season, so everybody's trying to get there."

Another player with a shot at the WTA Finals this week - Eugenie Bouchard - was also among the daytime winners on Thursday. The No.6-seeded Canadian survived a second set fightback against Alizé Cornet, originally leading 6-3, 5-2 but finally closing her out by a much tighter score, 6-3, 7-5.

Bouchard could qualify for Singapore if she wins the title - it depends on other results, too.

Przemek, pewnie jesteś dumny z tego ostatniego wyniku, fanyastyczny turniej ma Svitolina

No jestem, jestem, aż nic nie piszę bo się boję zapeszać na ten półfinał. I wszystko w dwóch setach.

Jedynym słowem: Jednak jeszcze nie potrafi Elinka utrzymać bardzo wysokiej formy przeciwko topowym zawodniczkom przez kilka meczów. Ale i tak wielki plus za ten turniej. Spotkanie z Kerber było długimi fragmentami nieziemskie...
No i fajnie, że odpadła z Petrą, a nie z Sereną, Wozniacką czy inną Azarenką.

No i będzie miała Genie okazję do rewanżu na Petrze.

W typowo kanadyjskim (tegorocznym) stylu zrobiła ten finał Bouchard. Nierozstawione plus kontuzjowana Woźniacka. Nie wiem jak dużą dotację na konto ATP i WTA wpłacił tamtejszy związek, ale te drabinki Raonica i wspomnianej Genie są momentami komiczne.

Powiedziałbym, że zrobi tyle co w finale Wimbledonu - czyli nic, ale do Petry nigdy nie miałem 100% zaufania, bo kto wie czy akurat jutro nie strzeli sobie 60 ue - ot tak, bez powodu...

Wszedłem na końcówkę finału i widać było, że wszystko zależało od Petry w tym meczu. Jak coś dała, to Genie łapała się na grę, jeśli nie, to cóż . Jeśli chodzi o debel, to zawsze miłe rozstrzygnięcie, dobrze zobaczyć Flavię z tytułem

Ani nie ma warunków fizycznych do definitywnego łupania, ani techniki Bouchard, więc regularnie w dalszych fazach turniejów może spotykać się ze ścianą, jak tylko trafi na taką Petrę.

Spotkanie z Kerber było długimi fragmentami nieziemskie...

Nieziemski był to pokaz bezmyślnego przebijactwa z jednej strony i ryzykownego tenisa, na chybił-trafił z drugiej. Może to jest tak, że Przemek masz rację, że Switolina jest wyjątkowa, że to taki nieoszlifowany brylant, który w takim stanie ma pozostać, nie zgadzający zaś się mylą.

Wciąż jednak pamiętam taką baśń Andersena, gdzie cesarz zamówił nowe szaty.

No jak się fanuje Radwańskiej to raczej się nie doceni tenisa Switoliny, tak że nie dziwię się.
