Nie obraziłbym się, ale tym razem Roger chyba już by się nie popłakał. To był szczególny moment. Teraz raczej porażka z Nadalem nie wywołałaby takich emocji. Sama dramaturgia finału jak najbardziej mogłaby się powtórzyć, aktorzy również na tak (choć wątpię czy stać ich jeszcze na taki mecz. Każdego z osobna tak, ale przeciw sobie raczej nie).

Stellar fields set for Australian Open 2015

Stellar men’s and women’s fields will descend on Melbourne Park for Australian Open 2015, the year’s first Grand Slam event.

“All of the world’s top 100 men and 99 of the top 100 women will be here for the Australian Open in January,” Tennis Australia’s CEO Craig Tiley said today.

“This is one of the deepest and strongest fields in the history of the tournament. Fans will be thrilled to welcome back some former top ten stars, all returning after some time out of the game with injury. This includes 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, former world No.2 Vera Zvonareva and dynamic Serbian Janko Tipsarevic will all be back.

“With little more than a month to go, our preparations for Australian Open 2015 are well on track and we are looking forward to another fantastic tournament. I’ve spoken with many of the players and they can’t wait to return to Melbourne.”

A US Open champion in 2009, del Potro is on the comeback trail from wrist surgery, while former world No.8 Janko Tipsarevic will make a welcome return after a foot injury wiped out his 2014 season.

Also returning are popular American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and former top 40 star Romina Oprandi, both using protected rankings to enter the main draw.

The only absentee from the women’s draw is world No.58 Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic, who has withdrawn due to a hip injury.

Eight wildcard entrants will be added to both the men’s and women’s draws, along with 16 male qualifiers and 12 female qualifiers.

Australia’s top 32 men and women will also battle it out for a wildcard entry in the Australian Open 2015 Play-off commencing 15 December at Melbourne Park.

Australian Open qualifying rounds will begin Wednesday 14 January, with the main draw commencing on Monday 19 January.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said in a statement Saturday that the field for the tournament beginning Jan. 19 was one of the "deepest and strongest" in the Grand Slam event's history.

Od pół roku wiadomo było, że na korty wróci najwcześniej w marcu.

Właśnie nie wiedziałem a na fejsie nic mi nie mignęło. Mogłem przeoczyć . Kurczę, szkoda mi go bardzo. Po ostatnim powrocie naprawdę świetnie grał. Oby grał dalej i żeby sam zakończył karierę jak chce.

Jordan Thompson has come through the most dramatic of Australian Open Play-off finals to confirm his place in the main draw at Australian Open 2015.

The New South Welshman defended his Play-off title with an epic 6-1 6-3 1-6 6-7(2) 9-7 over second seed John-Patrick Smith, played in brutally hot conditions at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

As the match wore on and the temperature climbed into the mid 30s, it became a battle of physical fitness and mental will over technique and tactics.

The trainer was on court attending to both players; Thompson suffered a blood nose and quadricep cramps while Smith sustained a jarred knee and was later stricken with even more serious cramps.

Slumped in a courtside chair following the victory, Thompson spoke to the media and recounted “the most gruelling match” he had ever played.

“I couldn’t even remember the score when I was winning – I just knew I had to win one more game,” he said.

“If I go to five in the Australian Open hopefully I’ll be fitter for it and hopefully it won’t be as hot, because I really think that hurt me.

“I just competed really well and got there in the end.”

It was a match of wild momentum swings. Thompson led by two sets to love and seemed on course for a routine victory, only for Smith to find the range on his errant forehand and begin to work his way back into the match.

Thompson became extremely frustrated as the left-handed Queenslander moved towards leveling scores, and once it was two sets apiece, Smith looked to have won the mental battle.

Thompson’s shoulders slumped as he fell behind 0-3, 15-40 in the deciding set – a deficit that after the match he could not even recall.

Yet he produced some powerful first serves when he needed them to escape that hole and get on the board at 1-3, and after Thompson broke serve in the fifth game, Smith called for the trainer to attend to his knee.

His movement compromised, Smith still managed to keep his nose in front; with game’s going on serve, he moved ahead 4-3 and watched as Thompson collapsed to the court with his first episode of cramping.

With both men walking wounded, Thompson was the first to gain a seemingly decisive advantage, breaking serve in the ninth game and scoring an opportunity to serve for the match.

He was promptly broken to love.

He gained another opportunity when he broke serve to lead 7-6. And was subsequently broken at 15.

But it was in the very next game that Smith’s body almost completely gave way. It was gut-wrenching viewing as his leg almost completely locked up with cramps and immobilised him; after an extended time between points, he carried on, but double faulted to surrender his serve for a third time.

Leading 8-7, Thompson made no mistake on his third attempt to serve out the match, roaring in delight as Smith committed a final error.

“Even the last game was tight, but I think when he started taking a few more timeouts my cramps started to feel a bit better, so that helped me … I was trying to feed off it (when Smith cramped) because I knew I was feeling better than him,” the 20-year-old said.

“It means the world (to win), to play another home Grand Slam is amazing.”

Mark Philippoussis to play Rafael Nadal in build-up to Australian Open

MARK Philippoussis will play a role in Spanish ace Rafael Nadal’s preparation for next month’s Australian Open.

The hard-hitting Australian is on Nadal’s star support acts for the former world No.1’s charity event on the Wednesday prior to the start Open at Melbourne Park.

Billed as Rafa’s Summer Set, Nadal will play exhibition sets against Philippoussis and US Open junior singles and doubles champion Omar Jasika.

It will be as much a nostalgic return for Philippoussis, now 38, on the renovated Margaret Court Arena.

The former world top 10 player and Australian Davis Cup hero is playing seniors events after his career was cut short by a knee injury.

Nadal will also play a best-of-five sets match against compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the game’s new fast format of four-games sets, with no lets and no advantage.

The 14-time major winner said by phone from Spain that the innovation would get the fans more involved in matches.

“It makes the sport more dynamic. Maybe they will use it on the professional tour (in future), I don’t know,’’ Nadal said.

Nadal is back in full training after an injury-interrupted year that started with the back ailment in the Australian Open final against Swiss victor Stan Wawrinka.

He had a right wrist injury in July, appendix surgery in October and recent stem cell therapy on his back.

“I’ve been working hard the last couple of weeks, I’ve really increased my practice,’’ Nadal said.

“I’m happy to say I’m able to practice every day with the right intensity, which is very important for me.

“After five or six months, the main thing for me is to work hard and be ready for the beginning of the year.’’

Nadal, currently the world No.3, will play an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi and an ATP tournament in Doha early next month in a bid to get crucial match practice before the first Grand Slam championship of the new year at Melbourne Park.

“Always when you didn’t compete for a while, to come back is difficult. But I will have the chance to play in Abu Dhabi first and then Doha, so I’m confident that will help me,’’ he said.

“I’m sure when I start practising at the highest level (in the Middle East) I’m sure the level of intensity and competition will be helpful. Every match will be very important for me.

“Only two events before the Australian Open is not much, especially after five months playing probably two tournaments. But that’s what it is. It’s not the first time it has happened for me. I’m motivated to be back strong again.’’
