Record-breaking attendance at the Mutua Madrid Open
Spoiler:
The sixteenth Mutua Madrid Open finished with a new attendance record. For 10 days the best tennis players in the world made Madrid the global epicentre of the sport, delighting the thousands of fans who turned out at the Caja Mágica between 5 and 14 May.
During the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open, a total of 260,228 people passed through the Caja Mágica gates, which is 15,568 more spectators than in 2016 and over 38,000 more than the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open.
Rafa Nadal and Simona Halep’s victories, in a packed Manolo Santana Centre Court, capped off a tournament that enjoyed huge attendance in the Caja Mágica. Tournament Director Manolo Santana was extremely positive about the event: “I honestly thought it would be very difficult to better last year’s successful tournament, when we were celebrating our fifteenth anniversary. However, I can proudly say that for the last 10 years we have managed to outdo ourselves and show the world that we have one of the best tournaments on tour. So many players and people from around the world have congratulated us for the successful organisation of this year’s tournament, so I would like to thank the team that make it possible”.
As well as the successful Caja Mágica attendance figures, the final of the Mutua Madrid Open between Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem received the highest viewing figures for a tennis match on TVE since 2013. The clash, which saw Rafa Nadal win his fifth crown in Madrid attracted 2,568,000 TV viewers, with a share of 20.7%, for its simultaneous broadcast on La 1 and Teledeporte.
