BERDYCH QUALIFIES FOR 2013 BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS

Tomas Berdych will make his fourth straight appearance at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after becoming the latest player to qualify for the season finale, to be held at The O2 in London from 4-11 November. Following the first round results at the Swiss Indoors Basel, the Czech is guaranteed his spot among the Top 8.

The 28-year-old Berdych joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro in the elite eight-man field. Home favourite Andy Murray also qualified, but was forced to withdraw from the tournament after undergoing back surgery. Berdych reached the semi-finals at the season finale in 2011 (l. to Tsonga).

“For me, it’s always one of my goals at the beginning of each season and it’s an honour to qualify,” said Berdych. “It’s just great to be a part of it. It really is the celebration of tennis, only for the Top 8 guys. It’s a huge show which I suppose tennis should be, and for us tennis players I would say it’s the best tournament.”

Berdych is one of four players this season to register 50 match wins on the ATP World Tour. The Czech is a three-time runner-up this season, reaching the finals at the Open 13 in Marseille (l. to Tsonga), the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (l. to Djokovic) and the Thailand Open in Bangkok (l. to Raonic). He also reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, falling to Djokovic both times.

“Tomas has one of the most powerful and exciting games in the sport and has firmly established himself among the world’s Top 8 players on the ATP World Tour,” said Tournament Director, Andre Silva. “We’re delighted to be able to welcome him back to The O2 for a fourth consecutive year.”

Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez will return to The O2 to defend their doubles title and will be joined in the eight-team field by first-time qualifiers Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo.

Granollers and Lopez won the title on their debut appearance last year, defeating Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the final. This season, the Spaniards reached the Western & Southern Open final in Cincinnati and were semi-finalists at the Australian Open. Croatian Dodig and Melo of Brazil won their first team title at the Shanghai Rolex Masters and reached the Wimbledon final.

Three singles and three doubles team berths remain up for grabs with two crucial weeks remaining in the Emirates ATP Race to London. Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet currently find themselves in the final three positions, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic close behind.

Roger Federer has qualified for the Barclays ATP
World Tour Finals for a record-tying 12th straight year.

Roger Federer will look to win the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a record seventh time after securing his place in the eight-man field at the season finale, to be held at The O2 in London from 4-11 November. The Swiss was guaranteed a place on Wednesday after beating Kevin Anderson in the BNP Paribas Masters second round in Paris.

The 32-year-old Federer is the most successful player to compete at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, compiling a 42-9 record and winning the title in 2003-04, 2006-07 and 2010-11. He finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in last year’s final. The Basel native has qualified for the 12th consecutive year, tying Ivan Lendl for the most successive appearances at the season finale. Andre Agassi holds the record for most non-consecutive appearances (14).

Federer joins Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych in the elite eight-man field. Home favourite Andy Murray also qualified, but was forced to withdraw from the event after undergoing back surgery.

“[It's] the absolute pinnacle of our sport," Federer recently said of the tournament. "You want to be able to showcase your talents against the best, with the biggest rivalries, in one of the coolest arenas in the world in front of amazing fans. For me it’s always been an honour to play there and I look forward to returning this year.”

Federer opened his 2013 campaign with a semi-final showing at the Australian Open and in doing so became the first man to record 250 Grand Slam match wins. At Roland Garros he became just the fourth player in ATP World Tour history to record 900 match wins en route to reaching his 36th successive Grand Slam quarter-final.

Having finished runner-up to Nadal in the Internazional BNL d’Italia final in Rome in May, Federer won his first title of the season in June at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, defeating Mikhail Youzhny. Federer also finished runner-up to del Potro in the Swiss Indoors Basel final on Sunday.

The eight-player singles field for the 2013 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is set. Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet have clinched the final two berths following Milos Raonic’s third-round loss to Tomas Berdych at the BNP Paribas Masters.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, defending champion Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro, Tomas Berdych and six-time winner Roger Federer round out the list of singles competitors, with the season finale to get underway next Monday at The O2 in London. Great Britain’s Andy Murray also qualified, but was forced to withdraw after undergoing back surgery.

Wawrinka will be making his Barclays ATP World Tour Finals debut. Coupled with Federer’s qualification, it marks the first time that two Swiss players will be competing at the season finale. Gasquet will make his second appearance, having also qualified six years ago in Shanghai.

Wawrinka and Gasquet have each produced their best seasons to date to secure their places at the Final Showdown. The 28-year-old Wawrinka is one victory from securing his 50th match win of the season, having won his fourth ATP World Tour title at the Portugal Open, reached the final of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Madrid and advanced to his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open.

Gasquet is also on the verge of his 50th win, having captured three ATP World Tour titles in a year for the first time since 2006. The 27-year-old Frenchman triumphed in Doha, Montpellier and Moscow, as well as reaching his first major semi-final since 2007 at the US Open.

Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer will contest the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the second year in a row after clinching their berth on Thursday. The Pakistani/Dutch duo reached the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters, while their rivals, David Marrero and Fenando Verdasco, were beaten in the second round. Two spots remain in the doubles field, with Marrero/Verdasco, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau and Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky still in contention.

Two teams qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday after BNP Paribas Masters action.

David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco booked a spot at The O2 in London, from 4-11 November, after Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 in the second round, during the evening session.

Qureshi and Rojer moved up to fifth position in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings - overtaking Marrero and Verdasco - after they defeated Julien Benneteau and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 6-4 in the BNP Paribas Masters.

The Pakistani-Dutch pair, who went 0-3 in round-robin play at the season-ending championships in 2012, booked their spot as a result of Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau beating Marrero and Verdasco 6-7(3), 7-5, 10-8 mid-afternoon.

Mirnyi and Tecau could meet Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky in the Paris semi-finals. Both teams are also battling to clinch the last spot in the English capital.

In other results on Thursday, three London qualifiers Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares, Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo and Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez all reached the quarter-finals.

Peya and Soares knocked out Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi 7-6(4), 6-7(1), 10-8, Dodig and Melo overcame Jeremy Chardy and Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-2, while reigning Barclays ATP World Tour Finals champions Granollers and Lopez beat Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen.

Singles Champion To Hoist Brad Drewett Trophy



This year’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals singles champion will hold aloft The Brad Drewett Trophy. The singles trophy was renamed in honour of Drewett, former ATP Executive Chairman and President, who passed away in May after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Drewett served as Tournament Director of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals from 2001-2011.

For more than 35 years, Drewett showed tireless dedication and service to a sport that he loved so much. His passion for the game was second to none, as was his popularity among his colleagues and peers.

Andre Silva, Tournament Director of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, said: “Brad had so much passion, dedication and love for the event. He had a vision and believed in the event. He believed it was one of the greatest events on the tennis calendar. He worked very hard to grow its legacy. We would not be staging the event in London and having huge success without him.”

“He was unique and had very good perspective from all sides of the tennis world. That is why he was able to contribute so much. He listened; he wanted people to challenge him with different opinions and ways of thinking. We will continue to grow the legacy of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and Brad’s name will always be on the trophy. We will never forget what he did for the event.”

Drewett was a former player, ATP Board member and Executive who, as head of the ATP from 2012-13, led negotiations for significantly increased prize money for all players at Grand Slam championships. He was a pioneer growing the game in Asia and, as Tournament Director of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, oversaw the event’s enormous international success from 2001 – 2011.

Co nie zmienia faktu, że obiektywnie rzecz biorąc, Roger nie zasłużył na WTF w tym sezonie.

A dlaczego Twoim zdaniem Federer nie zasłużył na grę w World Tour Finals? Może nie zgadza się coś w punktacji, że w wypowiedziałeś się w ten sposób (i to jeszcze na dwa turnieje przed Londynem - Bazyleą i Paryżem)? Rozumiem, że można by tak twierdzić, gdyby Roger zakwalifikował się do tego turnieju jako ostatni i wystąpił w nim dzięki absencji Murray'a, ale przecież on dostał się do niego na własnych warunkach. Chociaż wiem, z czego bierze się takie przeświadczenie - po prostu na Rogera patrzy się za bardzo przez pryzmat ostatnich dziesięciu lat jego kariery. W sumie można mówić, co tylko się chce o tym sezonie RF, ale to, że zakwalifikował się on do Londynu, jasno pokazuje, że dalej jest jednym z najlepszych tenisistów na świecie (jakkolwiek by to zabrzmiało uwzględniając na przykład porażki z rywalami spoza setki). Dla mnie jeśli Roger gra tak jak w AO, w Cincinnati z Nadalem, finale z Del Potro w Bazylei i teraz w Paryżu, wciąż zalicza się do czołowej piątki na świecie (jak nic mu nie dolega czwórki). A w Londynie może zdarzyć się wszystko, zwłaszcza że on od Bazylei gra coraz lepiej. Na pewno jest tam w stanie pokonać Del Potro (co właśnie udowodnił), Ferrera, Berdycha, Wawrinkę, Gasqueta i być może nawet Nadala, nad którym w hali miał zawsze przewagę, i Djokovicia (o tym niedługo się przekonamy). Na koniec zapytam Cię jeszcze, kto Twoim zdaniem zasługuje na start w WTF bardziej niż Federer (bo jeśli Roger nie zasługuje, to komuś musiało się to niewątpliwie bardziej należeć)? Ja tam osobiście wolę obejrzeć w tym turnieju Szwajcara po słabszym sezonie niż Gasqueta po świetnym.

Coś chyba spać nie mogłeś, Jonny skoro wyskakujesz z postem sprzed kilkunastu dni. Żeby Ci odpowiedzieć, muszę cofnąć się do momentu rozpoczęcia turnieju w Bazylei. Co zrobił do tego czasu Fed? Skorzystał z rozstawienia i uzyskał kilka niezłych wyników na początku sezonu, następnie skupił się na przegrywania z kim popadnie, ogarnął się w Cincy i znów przegrywał. Możliwe, że coś mylę, ale do wczorajszego spotkanie z Delpo, Szwajcar miał jedno zwycięstwo z tenisistą z top 10. To chyba wystarczy...

O tym kogo wolałbym zobaczyć najlepiej świadczy początek mojego posta - gdzie wyraźnie stwierdzam:

Ja tam mimo wszystko wolałbym Federera w Londynie zobaczyć. Co by nie mówić, to wciąż stać go na jakiś dobry występ, a w razie wtopy przynajmniej będzie o czym dyskutować.

Naprawdę z tego całego towarzystwa (skład WTF) Federer jest jedną z trzech postaci, którą odbieram pozytywnie i naprawdę bardzo się cieszę, że koniec końców w Londynie zagra.

Po prostu podchodząc obiektywnie do tego co działo się przed Bazyleą, to chyba przyznasz, iż za ciekawie nie było...
