Rojer/Tecau Clinch Return To Nitto ATP Finals

2015 champions to make third appearance at season finale
Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau will attempt to reclaim the Nitto ATP Finals crown when they make their return to The O2 this November. The Dutch/Romanian duo joins Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo and defending champions Henri Kontinen/John Peers in the elite eight-team field, clinching their berth by reaching the Shanghai Rolex Masters quarter-finals.
Rojer and Tecau will make their team’s third appearance at the season finale, to be held from 12-19 November, previously qualifying in 2014-15. On their last visit, they not only claimed the title without the loss of a set (d. Bopanna/Mergea in the final), but also clinched the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Ranking following their semi-final victory over the Bryan brothers.

This will be the fifth overall appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals for each player. Rojer qualified in 2012-13 with Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, while Tecau qualified in 2011-12 with Robert Lindstedt.
This season, Rojer and Tecau have won four titles, highlighted by their second Grand Slam crown at the US Open (d. Lopez/Lopez). They also lifted the ATP World Tour 500 trophy at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and a pair at the ATP World Tour 250 tournaments at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open and Winston-Salem Open.
Five places remain up for grabs in the doubles field with one month to go until the season finale. Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares are next in line to qualify, and can secure a second straight trip to The O2 by winning their quarter-final match in Shanghai.

Thiem Qualifies For Nitto ATP Finals

Dominic Thiem has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 12-19 November at The O2 in London, for a second successive year as a result of Friday’s quarter-finals at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Thiem, who is currently No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, joins Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev in the 2017 field, leaving four places up for grabs with four weeks to go until the prestigious season-ending tournament.
"I am very proud to have qualified again this year,” said Thiem. “It is not easy to qualify once but even more so to repeat the following year. I look forward to competing with the best players in the world at The O2."

The 24-year-old Thiem is the first Austrian singles player to qualify for multiple season finales since former World No. 1 Thomas Muster competed in the 1990, 1995-97 events. Last year at the Nitto ATP Finals, Thiem compiled a 1-2 record in round-robin group play.
Thiem, who is one of the most-travelled players on the ATP World Tour – competing in 24 tournaments in 2017 (46-23 match record), has lifted one trophy this year at the Rio Open presented by Claro in Rio de Janeiro (d. Carreno Busta) and has finished runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Nadal), an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, and at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (l. to Nadal). Coached by Günter Bresnik, the right-hander compiled a 24-5 record in clay-court matches in 2017, also advancing to the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year (d. Djokovic in QFs, l. to Nadal) and at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome (d. Nadal in QFs, l. to Djokovic in SFs).
Three doubles teams — Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus, and Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan — also clinched their spots for the elite eight-team doubles field after the conclusion of Friday’s play at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai. The pairs will join Henri Kontinen and John Peers, Lukas Kubot and Marcelo Melo, and 2015 champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau at The O2 in London next month. Two team spots remain up for grabs.
Murray and Soares have qualified as a team for the second successive year, while Roland Garros champions Harrison and Venus — who are currently No. 7 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London — book their spot as they are guaranteed to be the highest-ranked Grand Slam titlists positioned at least between No. 8 to No. 20. The Bryan twins, who have captured the prestigious season finale crown on four occasions (2003-04, ’09, ’14), have secured their place for the 15th straight year (2003-17).
The Nitto ATP Finals welcomes more than 250,000 fans to The O2 arena each year, as well as generating a global TV viewership of more than 100 million, as the ATP’s best eight singles players and doubles teams compete over eight days at the biggest indoor tennis tournament in the world.

Roland Garros champions fifth to qualify for season finale
Roland Garros champions Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus will cap off their season at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, becoming the fifth team to qualify for the season-ending tournament, to be held from 12-19 November at The O2 in London.
Harrison and Venus are currently No. 7 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London, but claimed the spot reserved for the highest-ranked Grand Slam champion that may finish outside the top seven, but no lower than 20th. The winners of the season’s other three majors – Henri Kontinen/John Peers, Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo and Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau – have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, along with Jamie Murray/Bruno Soares. Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan qualified later on Friday as well.

Harrison and Venus enjoyed a dream run at Roland Garros, only their fifth tournament together, where they were stretched to three sets in all six of their matches en route to the title. They upset Kubot/Melo, the current No. 1 doubles team, in the second round.
The 25-year-old American and 29-year-old Kiwi duo also teamed up to win the Millennium Estoril Open in early May, Harrison’s fourth doubles crown and first since 2012. Venus has won seven doubles titles.
Two places remain up for grabs at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 12-19 November, with just over three weeks remaining in the regular season. Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut, who have qualified the past two seasons, are sixth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut will attempt to earn their first Nitto ATP Finals trophy when they arrive at The O2 for the third time this November. The Frenchmen join Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo, defending champions Henri Kontinen/John Peers, 2015 winners Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau, Jamie Murray/Bruno Soares, four-time season finale champions Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan and Roland Garros winners Ryan Harrison/Michael Venus in the 2017 field.

Herbert and Mahut qualified for the event, to be held from 12-19 November, for the third year in a row, and are seeking their first appearance in the semi-finals.

The Frenchmen won at least two titles for the third consecutive year in 2017, with each of the victories coming at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event — the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, the Coupe Rogers in Montreal and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. The duo leads the tour in Masters 1000 triumphs this season, and their three in 2017 have lifted their overall Masters 1000 trophy count to six.

Mahut became the first Frenchman to finish No. 1 in the year-end Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings last season, with Herbert right behind him at No. 2.

One spot remains up for grabs in the doubles field with one month to go until the season finale. Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram currently sit in eighth place in the Emirates ATP Race To London with 3,020 points. Marcel Granollers and Ivan Dodig are right behind them with 2,945 points in the No. 9 slot.

A convincing straight-sets triumph over top seed Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the Intrum Stockholm Open lifted Juan Martin del Potro into contention for a return to the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 12-19 November at The O2 in London. Del Potro secured his 20th ATP World Tour title and jumped four spots to No. 14 in the Emirates ATP Race to London by retaining his Stockholm crown. Read Report.
The Argentine has 2,135 points in the Race, 470 points behind eight-placed Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. The 29-year-old is looking to secure his first Nitto ATP Finals berth since 2013 as one of the top eight players to qualify for the season finale. He is fourth seed at the Swiss Indoors Basel this week.

The Bulgarian, who is next in line to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, improved his chances with a run to his third Stockholm final. It was his first defeat in four ATP World Tour finals this season.
The 26 year old rose one spot above Marin Cilic to No. in the Emirates ATP Race To London with 3,560 points, just 25 points ahead of the Croatian. He could seal his debut berth at the Nitto ATP Finals this week when he the Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna.

A career-best fourth ATP World Tour title of 2017 for the Frenchman has further crowded the battle for Nitto ATP Finals berths. Tsonga’s straight-sets victory over Diego Schwartzman in the European Open final in Antwerp has catapulted him seven spots up to No. 15 in the Emirates ATP Race to London.
The 32-year-old Tsonga had already landed titles in Lyon, Marseille and Rotterdam earlier this year. Tsonga now has 2,055 points in the Race, 550 points behind Carreno Busta. He will attempt to make up ground in Vienna this week.

Damir Dzumhur’s love affair with Russia continued when the Bosnian and Herzegovinian clinched his second ATP World Tour title there on Sunday. The St. Petersburg Open champion improved to 10-0 on Russian soil this season with his VTB Kremlin Cup triumph by overcoming Lithuanian Ricardis Berankis.
With his confidence riding high, it marked Dzumhur’s third ATP World Tour final from his past seven tournaments. He will look to crack further improve on his career-high position in the Emirates ATP Rankings at Vienna this week.

Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic have both secured their places at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 12-19 November at The O2 in London. They will join World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, six-time champion Roger Federer, 20-year-old debutant Alexander Zverev and two-time qualifier Dominic Thiem in the elite eight-man field.
Dimitrov, the first Bulgarian to qualify for the prestigious season-ending tournament, and Cilic, who previously qualified in 2014 and 2016, clinched their berths today after fellow contender Sam Querrey lost in the first round of the Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna.

"Another amazing achievement for me," said Cilic. "Third time in four years to make it to London. That was one of my goals at the beginning of the season with my team and I’m glad that we have accomplished it."
In compiling the best season of his career, Dimitrov won his biggest title in August when he claimed his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (d. Kyrgios). The Bulgarian also put together a 16-1 record en route to the Australian Open semi-finals (l. to Nadal) and a pair of ATP World Tour 250 titles. He defeated three Top 10 players — Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori — in the final three rounds of the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp. On home soil at the Garanti Koza Sofia Open, the 26-year-old lifted the trophy with victory over David Goffin in the final. Last week, he finished as runner-up to Juan Martin del Potro at the Intrum Stockholm Open.

Cilic claimed the ATP World Tour 250 crown at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open (d. Raonic) in April, and also reached two finals in London — one at Wimbledon (l. to Federer) and the other at the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club (l. to Lopez). The same week that 29-year-old Cilic won in Istanbul, he also became the third Croatian to record at least 400 match wins (also Goran Ivanisevic, Ivan Ljubicic). Currently at a career-high World No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Cilic has won at least one ATP World Tour title for 10 consecutive years. His 17 career titles are the second-most for a Croatian behind Ivanisevic with 22 crowns.
With just two weeks left of the regular ATP World Tour season, Goffin and Pablo Carreno Busta, who are both within the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Race To London, are leading the battle to claim the last two spots in London and qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.
