ATP CHALLENGER TOUR FINALS
ATP Challenger Tour Finals To Return In Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo, Brazil

Obrazek
Victor Hanescu currently leads the ATP Year-To-Date Challenger Rankings.

The ATP Challenger Tour Finals will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the second consecutive year this November. To be played from 27 November to 1 December 2012, the event will feature the top seven players in the 2012 ATP Year-To-Date Challenger Rankings (determined by players’ best 10 Challenger results of the season) plus one wild card.

Players must compete in a minimum of 8 ATP Challenger Tour events to be eligible for the tournament, which will again be played at the Ibirapuera Sports Complex. The tournament will carry $220,000 prize money, including $91,200 should the champion be undefeated during the event. Last year, then-21-year-old German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe won the inaugural event, which attracted more than 10,000 people over five days.

Wiadomo, czym się organizatorzy kierują, ale Dutra-Silva czy Clezar dużo bardziej pasują do miana "challengerowych grajków".

SAO PAULO PREVIEW: PAOLO LORENZI
Sao Paulo, Brazil
by Kate Flory | 20.11.2012

Obrazek
Lorenzi enjoyed the best season of
his career in 2012.

Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi goes into the ATP Challenger Tour Finals having enjoyed the best season of his career aged 30. The second edition of the ATP Challenger Tour Finals is set to take place in Sao Paulo from 27 November to 1 December.

The right-handed Lorenzi has compiled a 37-10 match record on the ATP Challenger Tour this season, highlighted by reaching eight finals. He won two titles at Cordenons (d. Gimeno-Traver) and Medellin (d. Mayer).

“I’ve been playing really good on the Challenger Tour. I think it’s been my best season and I’m really happy for that,” Lorenzi told ATPWorldTour.com. “The level at Challenger events has been higher this season. The quality of the tournaments has been higher, so I’m really happy with that.”

Lorenzi this week reaches a career-high No. 63 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings and attributes his improvement this season to being more aggressive on the court. “I’ve improved a lot because I was working a lot on my game. I’ve tried to be more aggressive, coming to the net more. I think that was the key to my results this year.”

The inaugural ATP Challenger Tour Finals was won last year by Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who built on his success to enjoy a sustained period on the ATP World Tour in 2012, including a quarter-final showing at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart (l. to Bellucci).

The eight-man field in Sao Paulo this year features Brazilian wild card Thomaz Bellucci, Victor Hanescu, Aljaz Bedene, Evgeny Donskoy, Guido Pella, Andreas Haider-Maurer, Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo and Lorenzi.

“The field in Sao Paulo is going to be very strong because there are a lot of good players,” said Lorenzi. “I think it will be a good tournament with a good standard.

“I’ve never been to Sao Paulo and I hope to win that week at the tournament. When you start tournaments, you always hope to win. I don’t know if I can do that, but after this season, which has been for me my best season, I have to do my best. The main thing for me is to enjoy this new Masters.”

With more improvement in his sights, the Siena native is hoping to transfer his success on the ATP Challenger Tour this season to good results at tour-level in 2013. “Next season I hope to play more ATP events,” said Lorenzi. “But also I will play again some good Challengers because some of the tournaments are really good and I would like to go back to those places.”

SAO PAULO PREVIEW: ALJAZ BEDENE
Sao Paulo, Brazil
by Matt Fitzgerald | 21.11.2012

Obrazek
Bedene won four ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2012.

Aljaz Bedene began his 2012 season ranked No. 165 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, but in winning four ATP Challenger Tour titles and ascending as high as World No. 79, he will be one of the players to watch at the second ATP Challenger Tour Finals in Sao Paulo.

“One of my goals at the beginning of the year was to play the ATP Challenger Tour Finals. With good results all over the year, I managed to do it and I am really happy with it,” Bedene tells ATPWorldTour.com. “Of course, I am not going there only to play it, I will try to win it.

“My first goal for the season was to come in the Top 100. Since I had many injuries in the last years I am really happy that this season was almost injury free. I knew if I stay healthy, results like these would come sooner or later.”

Three of Bedene’s Challenger trophies came on clay, but the eight-man event in Brazil will be played on hard, a surface Bedene feels equally confident playing on. An aggressive baseliner who relies on his first serve and forehand, the 23 year old reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final at the indoor hard-court event in Vienna, just his second tournament following appendix surgery.

“I can say clay is still my best surface, but I prefer to play on hard,” says Bedene. “I know if we would have more hard courts in Slovenia, I would play better here. It suits my game more.”

With his rise this year, Bedene is one of three Slovenians to finish inside the Top 100 of the year-end South African Airways ATP Rankings, an accomplishment the World No. 98 is very proud of.

“I am lucky to be here with Grega Zemlja and Blaz Kavcic,” Bedene says. “They helped me a lot and showed me that everything is possible by beating better ranked players. Of course it is nice to be number one, so Grega now gave me a good challenge.”

Sao Paulo Preview: Victor Hanescu

Obrazek
Victor Hanescu won three
ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2012.

Victor Hanescu is the most experienced player competing in the eight-man field at the ATP Challenger Tour Finals. As he looks to wrap up his 2012 season with the title in Sao Paulo, the 31 year old heads into the event knowing he will finish inside the Top 100 of the year-end South African Airways ATP Rankings for the ninth time in 10 years.

“It means that I've worked hard all these years, and I did it with passion and trust,” Hanescu tells ATPWorldTour.com. “I am really thankful for what I have achieved in my career so far. I am very excited to be in the elite group of the Challenger players and be able to play this tournament. I think it is a very special and unique event.”

The Romanian had dropped as low as World No. 153 in June, but rebounded to reach six finals on the ATP Challenger Tour, taking home three trophies. Hanescu's consistency enabled him to finish first in the 2012 ATP Year-To-Date Challenger Rankings and in turn, he climbed 89 spots to No. 64; he was as high as No. 58 on 24 September.

“I really wanted to go back to Top 100 again,” says Hanescu. “For the first time in my career, I’ve started to work more on the mental part of the game, which brought me a lot of confidence and success.”

Hanescu is known for his results on clay, advancing to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2005 and contesting five ATP World Tour finals on the surface, highlighted by capturing the title in Gstaad four years ago. If he wants to be the last man standing in Sao Paulo, Hanescu will need to find a way to translate his dexterity on the dirt to the indoor hard court of the Ibirapuera Gymnasium.

“I started to play tennis on clay and for many years, we had only clay courts in Romania, so I think I developed very strong clay court skills. But also I enjoy playing on grass and slow hard courts,” Hanescu says. “At this level, in these times, every match and every player is a big challenge. I think all the players taking part at this event will perform at their maximum capacity. But I am going to enjoy my tennis and do my best!”
