Melzer-Petzschner Win First Major Title

Obrazek

In just their seventh tournament together, Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner won their first Grand Slam doubles title Saturday as they dismissed No. 16 seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-1, 7-5, 7-5 in the final of the The Championships at Wimbledon.

Both Melzer of Austria and German Petzschner were contesting their first Grand Slam doubles final; they are the first players to both win their maiden major doubles crown since Luis Horna and Pablo Cuevas triumphed at 2008 Roland Garros.

The 29-year-old Melzer’s previous best effort at a Grand Slam doubles tournament was a semi-final finish at the 2005 Australian Open (w/ Waske), while the 26-year-old Petzschner reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon (w/ Peya) and the US Open (w/ Kas) in 2008.

The duo only combined for the first time at the Brisbane International at the start of the season and won their first ATP World Tour team title at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors (d. Clement-Rochus) a month later. They are the first unseeded champions at Wimbledon since Stephen Huss and Wesley Moodie lifted the trophy in 2005.

“I think we're just two good tennis players, two good singles players, who proved in the past that we could play doubles,” assessed Melzer. “It was just a matter of how good we get together. We played great from the first round. Had one tough one in the semis. But still I think we really played good, good doubles the two weeks.”

The unseeded Melzer and Petzschner had been in scintillating form throughout the fortnight and raced to a one-set lead in the final, breaking in the first game of the match courtesy of a backhand return winner from Petzschner, again in the fifth game as Melzer whipped a forehand lob over his stranded opponents, and once more in the seventh game.

No. 16 seeds Lindstedt and Tecau saved two set points on serve in the 10th game of the second set, but could not keep their opponents at bay for long. Melzer and Petzschner broke serve to love in the 12th game, finishing with a backhand return winner up the line from the Austrian.

Melzer and Petzschner capitalised on their momentum by breaking serve in the first game of the third set. There was one final twist as a rare poor service game from Melzer allowed Lindstedt and Tecau to claw their way back into contention by levelling at 4-4. But the Austrian-German duo earned three match points in the 12th game and they sealed victory as Petzschner hit a forehand winner up the line.

“I think we had a really good start in the match,” said Petzschner. “We played incredible tennis the first set. I think also the second set we were the much better team. I think we just played one of our best matches out there today. I think we deserved to win.”

Vienna native Melzer is only the second Austrian Grand Slam doubles winner in the Open Era, joining former partner Julian Knowle, who won the 2007 US Open (w/ Aspelin). Petzschner of Bayreuth joined Michael Stich (Wimbledon 1992) as the only German Grand Slam doubles winners.

Lindstedt of Sweden and Romania’s Tecau came into the final riding a nine-match winning streak, having won the UNICEF Open (d. Dlouhy-Paes) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch the week prior to The Championships. Both men were contesting their first Grand Slam doubles final.

Melzer & Petzschner Join Top Two Doubles Teams In Qualifying For Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

Obrazek

Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner have qualified for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, scheduled to take place at The O2 in London from 21-28 November. The Austrian-German team joins the world’s top 2 doubles teams, Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan and Daniel Nestor & Nenad Zimonjic, as the first three teams to qualify for the doubles event.

Melzer & Petzschner currently stand in 7th place in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings, but they are nevertheless assured of their place in London by virtue of their Wimbledon Grand Slam title combined with a guaranteed finish inside the world's top 20.

The team's qualification was confirmed following Bob and Mike Bryan’s triumph over Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in last weekend’s US Open final. The Indian-Pakistani team represented the only remaining threat to the Wimbledon champions, but defeat for Bopanna and Qureshi at Flushing Meadows finally sealed qualification for Melzer & Petzschner regardless of whether they finish inside the Top 8 of the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings.

The remaining 2010 Grand Slam winning teams – Bryan/Bryan (Australian Open & US Open) & Nestor/Zimonjic (Roland Garros) – have already qualified thanks to guaranteed finishes inside the year-end Top 8.

Following his qualification in doubles, Melzer has now set his sights on making history by becoming the first player to qualify in both singles and doubles at the season-ending event since Emilio Sanchez (w/Casal) in 1990. Currently lying in 11th place in the Year-To-Date South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, Melzer is poised to challenge for one of the elite eight singles berths as the season unfolds over the next two months.

“To qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London is one of the best things you can do. It’s great to qualify in doubles already and we look forward to being there. Of course, it would be great to be there in singles as well – it would be a huge achievement. If you qualify in singles and doubles, it means you’ve had one hell of a season!” said the Austrian No.1.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have already qualified for the season-ending singles event. The remaining six places are still up for grabs, as a chasing pack featuring the likes of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick continue to battle for rankings points at ATP World Tour events during the remainder of the season in order to finish among the Top 8.

Petzschner Captures Vienna Double

Philipp Petzschner failed in his bid to win singles and doubles titles at the Bank Austria-Tennis Trophy on Sunday, when the German and his Austrian partner Alexander Peya fell to No. 4 seeds Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Israeli Andy Ram 6-1, 7-5 in 74 minutes. Rafael Nadal is the only player to have captured both titles at the same tournament this year, at Masters Series Monte-Carlo in April.

Mirnyi secured his 35th career trophy, while Ram won his 14th title. Earlier this year, Mirnyi won the Delray Beach crown (w/J. Murray) and Ram captured titles at the Australian Open and ATP Masters Series Indian Wells (w/Erlich). The pair was competing together for the first time this week.

Petzschner and Peya dropped to 9-4 on the season. Peya had previously finished runner-up at 2003 Kitzbuhel (w/ Melzer) and 2006 Munich (w/Phau).

Melzer-Petzschner Win Third Team Title In Rotterdam

Obrazek

Austria’s Jurgen Melzer and Germany’s Philipp Petzschner won their third ATP World Tour team title on Sunday as they defeated Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in the final of the ABN AMRO World Tour Tennis Tournament.

Melzer and Petzschner, currently eighth in the 2011 ATP Doubles Team Rankings after reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals (l. to Bryans), received 500 ranking points and €82,500 in prize money as winners of the first ATP World Tour 500 tennis tournament of the year.

“It’s been a great week in Rotterdam,” said Melzer, who won his 10th tour-level doubles title. “It’s a very strong tournament and to end up winning it is always nice. I think we played great matches. We were struggling a little bit in the first round, and then obviously in the final a Match Tie-break is never easy, but I’m really happy with the way we performed and am looking forward to the next weeks.”

Petzschner added, “We had a great week. We played four great matches in a row. We beat tough teams as well so I’m really happy about the win. [Next week] in Marseille we are the top seeds, so of course we’ll go there and try to get the title.”

It marked their first title since triumphing at Wimbledon (d. Lindstedt-Tecau) last July and took them to a 3-0 record in tour-level finals; they won their maiden crown in Zagreb (d. Clement-O. Rochus) just over a year ago.

The top eight teams in the 2011 ATP Doubles Team Rankings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and Melzer and Petzschner will be hoping to make a second visit to The O2 in London after going 1-2 in round robin play on their debut last year.

The second seeds made a strong start to Sunday’s final, breaking Llodra’s serve in the first game of the match as they clinched the first set in 30 minutes. Fourth seeds Llodra and Zimonjic struck back in the second set, though, breaking Petzschner’s serve in the fourth game to level the match. In the deciding Match Tie-break, Melzer and Petzschner won six of the last seven points from being tied at 4-4, including benefitting from two double faults from Zimonjic on the last two points, to claim victory in 72 minutes.

Llodra and Zimonjic, who joined forces full time at the beginning of the season, were contesting their first ATP World Tour doubles final together. Like Melzer and Petzschner, they also began their 2011 campaign with a quarter-final showing in Melbourne (l. to Bhupathi-Paes).

“Jurgen and Philipp played a great match today,” commented Zimonjic. “I want to thank my partner. This is only our second tournament together and we’re already in the finals. We were unfortunate today, but it was a good match.”

The 30-year-old Llodra dropped to an 18-17 mark in tour-level doubles finals, while the 34-year-old Zimonjic was denied his 40th tour-level title (39-26 finals record).

Melzer-Petzschner Triumph In Stuttgart Final

Obrazek

No. 2 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner defeated third-seeded Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the MercedesCup in Stuttgart to notch their second title of the year on Saturday.

Both teams struggled to hold serve early in the match, as the first four games saw three breaks of serve. After moving ahead 2-1, Melzer and Petzschner maintained their advantage. Serving at 5-4, they saved two break points to close out the first set in 30 minutes.

In the second set, the Austrian-German duo broke serve in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead and did not relinquish it, claiming victory on their first match point. "We were returning pretty good and were aggressive. After losi

ng serve in the first game of the match, we came back strong," Melzer told ATPWorldTour.com.

Melzer and Petzschner won every set they played this week to improve to a 4-0 finals record together. The title adds to their earlier season triumph at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Rotterdam. "It’s a great feeling, especially winning in front of the home crowd. I think we played a really good match today," said Petzschner. "They didn’t make it easy for us, but we came through and it was a nice win. It’s a great experience winning a title on clay and we have a lot of confidence for Hamburg."

Added Melzer, ""It’s nice to get the title and get back on track to London. Hopefully we can continue like this in Hamburg."

The Spaniards were bidding for their first team title, having reached the final in Zagreb (l. to Norman-Tecau). Granollers dropped to a 6-7 finals record while Lopez fell to a 5-5 mark.

Q&A With Philipp Petzschner

Obrazek

Philipp Petzschner returns to Davis Cup action for the first time since 2008 when the German squad travels to Zagreb this weekend to face Croatia.

Petzschner has been a consistent player on the singles court, ranking inside the Top 100 for the past three years and reaching a career-high No. 35 in 2009, but his crowning achievement last season came in doubles. Playing alongside Austrian Jurgen Melzer, he captured his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, earning the pair a place in the doubles field at the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

In this interview, the 26 year old discusses his Wimbledon triumph, his goals for the 2011 ATP World Tour season, and the state of German tennis.

Q: At this stage of your career, are you concentrating more on your singles results or your doubles events with teammate Jurgen Melzer?
A: First of all I’m only trying to play tennis and have fun with it, but of course I’m concentrating a lot more on my singles even if I’m more successful in doubles at the moment.

Q: After reaching a career high of No. 35 in the world on the ATP World Tour in September of 2009, what kind of ranking goals have you mapped out for yourself in 2011?

A: I want to get [back] to the Top 30 and see where it leads [me] from there.

Q: How much did winning Wimbledon with Melzer in 2010 help the confidence and the belief in your game?
A: A lot of course. Winning the biggest tournament in tennis is a great thing and [it] gives you confidence and belief in your game.

Q: John McEnroe has gone on record as saying that he believes that your service motion is the best that he’s ever seen. Can you discuss the elements of your serve that have led you to having such a successful motion? Did you spend a lot of time as a junior developing your delivery?
A: I mean words like this from John McEnroe is an honour, but as anybody else of course I try to practice serving a lot because it’s a key shot in tennis and especially in my game.

Q: To a degree, Germany has not produced the level of singles champions that it once did when Boris Becker and Michael Stich were winning Grand Slam events. Can you provide your thoughts on the state of the men’s game in Germany, and if you believe that the country will once again produce great singles champions?
A: I guess it’s just a matter of time until we create a big champion again. I think we have a lot of really good players in our country but [we're] just missing a top player who boosts up our energy as well.

Q: What would you deem your favorite surface on tour at this point, considering that you have had great results on all the major surfaces?
A: I’ve always loved playing on grass, especially [at] Halle and [at] Wimbledon.

Q: After being on tour for 10 years, what significant changes have you seen in the level of play within the Top 100? Is the competition on the men’s circuit as strong as it’s ever been?
A: I think the tennis is improving every year and the Top 100 are getting better and better.

Q: Which player do least like to face on tour and why?
A: I think [Rafael] Nadal is the toughest opponent you can face because he just never gives up and is such a great fighter.

Q: Which up-and-coming player from the group of Milos Raonic, Richard Berankis, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Bernard Tomic and Grigor Dimitrov can you see making the biggest impact on tour?
A: I think Raonic can be a really tough player. When his serve is on he can be hard to beat.

Q: Finally, if you could share one funny locker room story, what would it be?
A: There are too many to pick one but whatever happens in the locker room stays in the locker room.

Melzer & Petzschner Capture Second Major Title

Obrazek

Ninth seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner captured their second Grand Slam championship together on Saturday night in New York as they defeated sixth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-2, 6-2 in the US Open final.

The Austrian-German tandem won their first major title in just their seventh tournament together at Wimbledon in 2010 (d. Lindstedt-Tecau). They have won five titles together overall, having also triumphed this season at Rotterdam (d. Llodra-Zimonjic) and Stuttgart (d. Granollers-M. Lopez).

"From the word go, we were playing really well," said Melzer. "The opponents were a little bit nervous from the beginning and we fully used that to our advantage."

Petzschner added, "Winning another slam is an amazing feeling. We're both really happy the way it turned out."

Victory gives Melzer and Petzschner a strong chance of qualifying for the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. They are currently eighth in the 2011 ATP Doubles Team Rankings, just inside the qualification spots. They made their debut at the season finale last year, but failed to advance past the round robin stage.

After an exhilarating day of action on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the doubles final did not get underway until close to midnight, but it did not throw Melzer and Petzschner off their game. The ninth seeds went up a double break inside five minutes, with Petzschner scorching returns and the under-fire Poles both double faulting. Petzschner closed out the set on serve in the eighth game after 22 minutes.

Another double fault from Fyrstenberg saw the Poles surrender their serve in the third game of the second set. They managed to draw level immediately, breaking Petzschner’s serve, but their respite was shortlived as a lob winner from Melzer regained the break advantage for his team in the fifth game. The Austrian-German duo then broke the Fyrstenberg serve again in the seventh game and served out victory in 49 minutes.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski had defeated 2010 runners-up Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in the semi-finals to reach their first Grand Slam final, and were bidding to become just the second Polish Grand Slam champions after Wojtek Fibak won the 1979 Australian Open doubles crown.

The Poles were contesting their first tour-level final since reaching four back-to-back finals in autumn of last year and dropped to an 11-19 mark.

Krótki wywiad z triumfatorami tegorocznego Us Open:

Cytuj:
An Interview with: Philipp Petzschner and Jurgen Melzer

Q. Tell us a little bit about what this win means for you today.

PHILIPP PETZSCHNER: I think it was a great win. Played incredible doubles today. 5-0 and finals, it's great. Winning another slam, as I said, it's an amazing feeling, and we're both really happy the way it went out.

JURGEN MELZER: Well, there's nothing more to say after this. It's been an amazing finals today. We have played -- from the word "go" we were there and we have been playing really well. Those guys were a little bit nervous in the beginning, and we fully, I think, used that to our advantage. In the end it's a 2 and 2 victory, and we were happy about that.

Philipp Petzschner - player's profile

Obrazek
Country: Germany
Born: 24th March 1984 (Bayreuth, Germany)
Lives: Cologne, Germany
Plays: right hand
Career High: 35

Philipp Petzschner is known to be a unique character on the tour. One of his doubles partner, Christopher Kas, said that Petzschner was his favourite player to watch, because you could always see something special during his matches. He can look sluggish in one moment and show wild emotions in the next moment. Once he had to withdraw from a mixed match at the German Championships due to a foot injury, because he kicked against the umpire's chair in frustration after losing in singles. He also is probably one of the top 10 racket breakers on tour.

After a promising junior's career and an early ATP quarterfinal in Metz 2003, Petzschner couldn't fulfill the expectations due to lack of hard work and many injuries, including torn ligaments in both feet in early 2007. Finally, after those foot injuries in 2007 he started to change his attitude and worked hard on his comeback. As a result he had some of his best career successes in the second half of 2007, including the second round at the US Open, his first challenger singles title in Rennes and his first Davis Cup nomination for the semifinal in Russia, where he replaced the injured Michael Kohlmann as Alexander Waske's doubles partner. He is known for his strong net play and touch, which is the reason why a friend nicknamed him "Picasso." Waske said then he had potential for the top 20 in doubles. And it happened. In 2011 Petzschner even broke to the top 10. In 2010 together with Jurgen Melzer from Austria they won Wimbledon. At the same time Germany beat Argentina 4-0 in the football World Cup. Melzer's girlfriend told the score to the Austrian during the changeover and he asked whether Philipp would like to know the result. "I prefer to focus on the third set," he answered.

Prior to the 2008 season, Petzschner announced that he was too old now for playing futures and challengers and wants to play mainly the big tournaments this year. One of his goals was to get direct entry for the grass court tournaments, which is his favourite surface. He also said he wanted to earn more money now, a thing he hadn't done too much in the previous years. In mid February he made the first step into the right direction, by signing a Bundesliga contract for Aachen, a team which is known for paying big money.

Despite injuries to come back he continues the correct path not only in doubles. He also won an indoors ATP tournament in Vienna in 2008 and achieved a grass final in Halle 2011.

He got married to Dewi and is raising up her son Aziz as a stepfather.
