'POLISH POWER' BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN METZ

Third seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski enjoyed a return to the winners' circle Sunday in Metz as they defeated Marin Draganja and Henri Kontinen 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-8 in the Moselle Open final.

The ‘Polish Power’ won their first ATP World Tour title in 14 months, since lifting the trophy in Hamburg in July 2013.

"Recently we haven't won much," said Fyrstenberg. "It's always great to have a title. It's very refreshing and you get confidence. Hopefully it's not over - the Bryans have 100! Still a way to go for us! We're happy."

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski had missed out on winning this ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tournament twice before, finishing runners-up in 2007 and ’08 to Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra.

Playing in their 38th tour-level final together, the third seeds fired 13 aces and won 84 per cent of their first service points, clinching seven points more than their opponents to prevail in 84 minutes. They captured their 15th team title.

Fourth seeds Draganja and Kontinen were bidding to win their first team title in just their second ATP World Tour outing together.

Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes capped their debut outing together with victory at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, denying second seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-5 in Sunday’s final.

Murray and Peers did not drop serve in the final of this ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tournament, but were edged out in the second set tie-break and match tie-break as Paes/Matkowski prevailed in 90 minutes.

"In a match like that, especially in the final, the margins between winning and losing are very small," said Paes. "What I really like about Marcin's game after playing with him this week is that he is a student of tennis. On the court, he's always looking to improve.

"We didn't play our best tennis in the beginning today. We were playing a team that were very confident. They don't give you much rhythm. But then when we were down, we found our groove and it was pretty much a different story then."

Matkowski is Paes’ 97th different doubles partner and helped the 41-year-old Indian to win his 54th tour-level title. Paes has won at least one ATP World Tour title each year since 1997 (54-37 finals record). Kuala Lumpur marked his first success since triumphing at the 2013 US Open with Radek Stepanek.

The 33-year-old Matkowski was playing his first tour-level final without long-time partner Mariusz Fyrstenberg, with whom he won the Moselle Open crown in Metz last week (d. Draganja/Kontinen). The Pole clinched his 16th ATP World Tour title (16-23 finals record). It was Matkowski's second victory in Kuala Lumpur, having lifted the trophy in 2009 with Fyrstenberg.

"Obviously, I'm very happy to play with Leander," said Matkowski. "He's a great player. We'll try to play a few more tournaments in the fall, in the indoor tournaments in Europe. We've enjoyed a very good start and we look forward to continuing this way."

Murray and Peers were bidding for their second title of the season, following victory on clay in Munich in May (d. Fleming/Hutchins). With Jamie’s brother Andy Murray competing in the Shenzhen Open singles final, it marked the first time that the brothers played in separate tournament finals on the same day.

Z kolei Matkowski okazał się we wrześniu najlepszy w Kuala Lumpur, gdzie partnerował mu Hindus Leander Paes. FYRSTENBERG/GONZALEZ CLINCH FIRST TITLE IN MEMPHIS

The newly formed duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez defeated Artem Sitak and Donald Young 5-7, 7-6(1), 10-8 to claim their first title as a team at the Memphis Open on Sunday.

Prior to their Memphis run, the No. 4 seeds had failed to win a set in three straight defeats in 2015 (Brisbane, Auckland, Melbourne). The Polish-Mexican pair carried momentum into the final after upsetting top-seeded veterans Ivan Dodig and Max Mirnyi in a thrilling semi-final.

Fyrstenberg and Gonzalez served for the first set at 5-4, but Young and Sitak strung together three straight games to take the opener. Young and Sitak, who had not dropped a set en route to the final, again came up with a key break to level things at 5-all in the second, but the eventual champions fought back to force the deciding Match Tie-Break.

“The great thing for me personally is that we could still be there fighting and keeping positive things up," Fyrstenberg said. "If you win an easy match, it’s nice, but it doesn’t count as this one, so I’m double happy."

“They are very pumped up and they had nothing to lose," Gonzalez added about their opponents. "It’s so hard to play against those teams. Especially Donald, against the guys who had a good week in singles, it’s always extremely hard."

They may be a new team this season, but Fyrstenberg and Gonzalez have plenty of experience on the doubles court. Gonzalez is 9-3 in ATP World Tour doubles finals, while Fyrstenberg is 16-23.

After clinching the 91-minute match, the victors were presented with one of the most unique trophies on the ATP World Tour: custom-made Gibson Memphis ES-335 Figured Gloss Semi-Hollowbody electric guitars.

"It’s my best trophy ever!" Gonzalez said excitedly after the match. "I bought one guitar a year ago, and it was quite expensive, but it was nothing compared to this one. I think it’s a great trophy, and I’m very happy."

Marcin Matkowski i Robert Lindstedt zakończyli współpracę

Tylko dwa miesiące trwały wspólne występy Marcina Matkowskiego i Roberta Lindstedta. Polak i Szwed postanowili, że już nie będą razem grać w deblu.

Jak poinformował dziennikarz Marek Furjan, turniej w Dubaju był ostatnim wspólnym występem Marcina Matkowskiego i Roberta Lindstedta. Polak i Szwed zakończyli współpracę po niespełna dwóch miesiącach wspólnej gry.

Matkowski i Lindstedt rozegrali dziesięć spotkań, z których wygrali cztery. Ich najlepszym wynikiem jest półfinał turnieju w Sydney. Prócz tego zanotowali ćwierćfinały w Brisbane i Zagrzebiu, 1/16 finału Australian Open, a w Rotterdamie i w Dubaju przegrywali w I rundzie.

Nowym partnerem 34-letniego Matkowskiego ma być jeden z najbardziej utytułowanych deblistów świata, Nenad Zimonjić. Serb, niegdyś lider, a obecnie trzeci tenisista rankingu deblowego, wygrał 53 deblowe tytuły, w tym trzy wielkoszlemowe. W 2010 roku zdobył Puchar Davisa.

W obecnym sezonie 38-letni belgradczyk występuje wspólnie z Aisamem-ul-Haqiem Qureshim.

Polish/Pakistani duo claim their first title as a team

Fourth seeds Marcin Matkowski and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi captured the ASB Classic crown with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-3 win over Jonathan Erlich and Scott Lipsky on Saturday.

Erlich and Lipsky quickly claimed the first set after 23 minutes, but the eventual champions fired up for a comeback, breaking early in the second set for a 1-0 lead. The Polish/Pakistani duo capitalised on all three break point chances in their 61-minute victory.

Matkowski and Qureshi topped Ryan Harrison and John Isner 7-6(4), 6-1 in the first round, beat Santiago Gonzalez and David Marrero 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in the quarter-finals and defeated Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner 6-4, 6-4 for a final berth.

“I’m really happy with our performances throughout the week and especially the way we found our way back into the matches and to win the title,” said Qureshi. “I’m really happy and proud with the way we handled the pressure and the situations in all of the matches.”

“Obviously it was a great partnership for us so we couldn’t ask for anything else and hopefully we’ll have good luck in Melbourne for each of us and then we can play some more tournaments after,” added Matkowski.

The 35-year-old Matkowski is now 18-28 in ATP World Tour finals, while Qureshi, age 36, improves to 12-16. As champions, they will split $24,380 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

Unseeded duo Erlich and Lipsky, who upset second seeds Dominic Inglot and Florin Mergea en route to the final, will split $12,820 and 150 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

After 17 years on the ATP World Tour, doubles specialist Mariusz Fyrstenberg has decided to call it a career.
At the ATP Challenger Tour’s Pekao Szczecin Open in Poland, Fyrstenberg announced on Sunday that he would be retiring from professional tennis, having completed a successful doubles career, most notably competing beside fellow Pole Marcin Matkowski in the pairing best known as “Polish Power”.
“This is a special place for me, because in Szczecin I started my doubles career,” said Fyrstenberg. “I won here three times and always love the atmosphere at this tournament and the people, who always support me. I stopped playing tennis half a year ago, but I decided to announce it in Szczecin. I’ve never thought about any other place to finish my career.”

After officially turning pro in 2001, the left-handed Fyrstenberg developed a greater penchant for doubles over singles, a discipline in which he only peaked at No. 317 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Deciding to focus on doubles exclusively in 2007, the Pole, who hails from Warsaw, reached a career-high of No. 6 in August of 2012 and won 18 ATP World Tour doubles titles in a career spanning two decades.
Career title triumphs for the 37-year-old Pole include a maiden ATP Challenger doubles title on home soil in Szczecin in 2001, followed by a first ATP World Tour doubles title – also at home – in Sopot. (2003), and Masters 1000 crowns in Madrid (2008, 2012), all with Matkowski.
"Looking into the past, I can say that victories in Szczecin and in Sopot gave me the biggest happiness, although the biggest success was reaching the final in 2011,” reflected Fyrstenberg.
Alongside Matkowski, Fyrstenberg reached the US Open final in 2011, falling just short to Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner. As a result, team “Polish Power” qualified for their fifth and final appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals in London, where they made it all the way to the championship match before bowing out to Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor.
Representing Poland in Davis Cup, Fyrstenberg produced some of his best results, posting a record of 29 wins and 14 losses across 28 tie nominations. With a 22-7 record overall in doubles, he and Matkowski (19-6 together) combined for the best doubles team in Poland’s Davis Cup history.
The Pole played his last match this past February, reaching the semifinals of the Garanti Koza Sofia Open with partner Martin Klizan.
What’s next for Fyrstenberg? His wife Marta Fyrstenberg had an idea. “I’m glad that Mariusz said 'goodbye' to professional tennis,” she said. “Now he will be often at home!”
