Thiem Stuns Wawrinka In Madrid

Dominic Thiem celebrates his first Top 10 win.

Austrian qualifier Dominic Thiem recorded his biggest career win Tuesday, stunning World No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open.

"I cannot really believe it," he admitted. "I was in this famous zone during the match. I was unbelievably concentrated. I think that's how you can play these very good matches, if you are 100 per cent concentrated and 100 per cent out on the court."

Thiem, who has come through qualifying seven times this season, broke the reigning Australian Open champion in the final game to clinch his first victory over a Top 10 player. He bounced back strongly after a one-sided opening set, going on to save all three break points faced and capitalise on three of his four chances.

"Of course I was a little bit nervous, but it wasn't the reason for the first set," Thiem said. "His pace was just too high for me.

"I played a good game in the beginning of the second set to break him, and then I started to get more and more used to his pace and angles and his game, [which is] probably one of the best men's tennis has at the moment. Also, I played unbelievable the second and the third set."

Wawrinka lost just his fourth match this season, and fell in his tournament opener for the first time since last October in Basel.

"I was hesitating with my game and he went for it and deserved to win," said the Swiss. "He's a good player. We all know that. We all see that, especially since the beginning of the year. I'm not surprised because I know him."

At 20 years and eight months, Thiem is currently the youngest player inside the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings and also the youngest to defeat a Top 3 opponent since a 20-year-old Juan Martin del Potro upset No. 3 Rafael Nadal and No. 1 Roger Federer at the 2009 US Open. Marin Cilic, also 20 at the time, beat No. 2 Andy Murray in the fourth round of the US Open that year.

The "Dominator" began the season at No. 139 and is currently at a career-high No. 70 Emirates ATP Ranking, breaking into the Top 100 after reaching the second round in Rotterdam, where he extended a sixth-ranked Andy Murray to a third set. Thiem also reached the third round as a qualifier on his ATP World Tour Masters 1000 debut this past March in Indian Wells (l. to Benneteau).

"This year I've played very good so far, played also very consistent," he said. "I made seven out of eight qualies, and the quali matches, they help a lot. I get used to the level of the Top 100 guys, and I think I've already had 35 matches this year. That's the most important, to play almost every day against these top guys to increase your own level."

Thiem will play the winner between 15th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Spaniard Feliciano Lopez for a place in the quarter-finals.

I am extremely sorry I was not able to play today. We guess maybe I ate something wrong, but we do not exactly know right now. I felt sick all day and it became worse and worse instead of better. I saw the doctor and we tried everything. But it is simply impossible. I would have loved to play against Feliciano Lopez today, I was so much looking forward to that match and show you a good fight. I am in the hotel now and hope I will be fit enough tomorrow to fly home. I will get in touch with you as soon as I can say more what really happened and when I will be able to play again. Sorry again!!

Dominic na temat swojego losowania.

Hello! I'm still in Nice and leave to Paris tonight. I don't know how often I heard the name Nadal today. For sure it was more often than the name Mathieu. But it would be a big mistake to think like that. Of course it would be incredible to play Nadal in Paris. But I need to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu first. A very experienced player with good results on clay this year. And playing a frenchman in Roland Garros doesn't make my job easier. It will be a very difficult first round. I think the chances are even. In the last few days we worked on my fitness a lot. I'm sure I will be ready for best of five until sunday or monday! Bamos!

Dominic przegrał mecz 2. rundy RG14 z Rafaelem Nadalem 26 26 36 i tak opisał całe zajście na FB:

2:6, 2:6, 3:6 against Rafael Nadal. I didn't play a bad match. But many details were not good enough to make it a test for him. Most of them were real rookie-errors. Easy unforced errors. They happen because you want to play better on clay against Rafael Nadal than you want to play against anybody else. And because he absolutely doesn't help you. No errors, no presents. It was a mega experience to stand on the biggest clay court in the world together with the best claycourt player in the world. I unconditionally want to make that experience that again. And the next time I want to come one step closer. This is a big goal and worth working for it as hard as I can. Thanks for your incredible support!

"I will need 2 or 3 years to get to the level of the best players" said humble Dominic Thiem in his press conference in Paris, after losing to Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the second round of the French Open.

A talent the Austrian, a future tennis star for sure, who not only plays against the best and learns, he also beats them sometimes. Ask Stan Wawrinka what Dominic can do!

The 20-year-old talks to the media in relaxed fashion, he doesn't have much to recriminate or reproach. "I have the chance to learn a lot playing against these players. It's very good practice for me. I have a lot to improve, not just my position in the court, which against these players should be more advanced, more into the baseline rather then far at the back. One thing is to say it, one thing is to do it. I think only Novak Djokovic manages to play like that against Rafael Nadal" said Thiem.

Why is it so hard to play against Rafael Nadal on clay? Dominic now can speak for himself: "he doesn't give you anything. He doesn't give away a single point. Even if you are up 30-00 or 30-15 he would still fight on every ball thinking he can win the game. His top spin is very hard to deal with. For example, I like a lot to play the backhand down the line, but today it was almost impossible for me, because the top spin of the ball was to strong. He played very well, very few mistakes".

Nadal tips Thiem as future star

The scoreline reads like a lop-sided mismatch, but the promise gifted Austrian Dominic Thiem displayed against the might of Rafael Nadal pointed to bigger things to come.

Scratch the surface and the 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 result on Philippe Chatrier Court in the eight-time champion’s favour becomes somewhat peripheral.

Nadal was clearly resilient when it mattered most in the second-round encounter; his 19 unforced errors fewer than half his opponent’s, but the 27 winners flying off the strings of the fast-rising Thiem and the all-court flair he showed had the Spaniard anointing him as among the best hopes of succeeding the current crop of Grand Slam-winning champions.

“As far as his game is concerned, I think that our generation is now on the way out, like Murray, Djokovic, Ferrer, and Berdych and others, and Tsonga, as well, we have been here for a long while. A generation is walking away and others will replace us. It will not come overnight, but it will come,” Nadal said.

“I think that this player has a huge potential and could be one of the ones who's going to replace us. His tennis style is really good. What he could work on is his footwork and how he moves on the court. That's all. But apart from that, I think his speed is really good, and also the way he changes directions, he serves well. I think he has a bright future ahead of him.”

The young Austrian recorded the first top 10 win of his short career against Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka only weeks ago in Madrid. At 20 years and eight months, he became the youngest player to defeat a top-three opponent since Juan Martin del Potro stunned then-No.1 Roger Federer to win the 2009 US Open.

Playing Nadal on the Grand Slam stage the Spaniard has come to own, though, is an altogether tougher ask.

“He lost one match here in 10 years or something, so I knew that it's gonna be the biggest challenge in my tennis career,” Thiem said. “It is really important to play against these guys a lot, against these top guys, because it's more important than every practice, I think. I hope I can take a lot with me from this match.”

If Thiem, playing his first Roland Garros, was expected to be the more nervous of the two, it didn’t show.

He conjured a break point on Nadal’s opening service game and showed the full array of shots in his artillery to wheel the Spaniard to all corners, closing for a backhand half-volley winner on serve.

Where the shot production was not lacking, consistency was. Nadal broke for 2-0 and went on to snare the set on a double fault from the Austrian after 42 minutes.

Two sets down and Thiem made an early push in the third. Roared on by the packed Philippe Chatrier Court crowd he broke for 2-1 and pulled off another backhand half-volley winner for 3-1.

But amid the moments of brilliance, his serve became his Achilles heel, and he was unable to consolidate the advantage when the opportunity arose.

“He doesn't give you anything. I was serving 213[km/h], 215, even on the line, and he brings the returns back. I think he made two mistakes on second serve, so you have to play every rally,” Thiem said.

A double fault surrendered a second successive break and the No.1 seed closed it out after two hours and five minutes for a third-round assignment against Leonardo Mayer.

Thiem is knocking but Nadal’s lease on Philippe Chatrier Court is far from up.

THIEM RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS IN HAMBURG

In a contest between two of the ATP World Tour’s rising stars, Dominic Thiem finished strongly to defeat Jiri Vesely 7-5, 6-0 on Monday in the first round of the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg. The Austrian created 16 break point chances and converted five of them for victory in 83 minutes.

World No. 55 Thiem returned to winning ways, having failed to win a match during the grass-court swing. The 20 year old enjoyed a standout victory on clay as a qualifier in Madrid this past May, beating No. 3-ranked Stan Wawrinka in the second round. He has a 12-12 match record this season and goes on to face eighth seed Marcel Granollers.

"The second set was very good, because it was a tough match against a good friend," said Thiem. "I've known him for a very long time. We played juniors together. I haven't won many matches in the past two months so it's a very important win. It's easier for me on clay; I feel comfortable from the first ball."

Another young gun, Dusan Lajovic, made a strong start as he dismissed Kenny De Schepper 6-3, 6-2 in 62 minutes. The Serb won 72 per cent of his service points and broke serve three times to notch his 12th win of the season. He was a quarter-finalist last week in Bastad (l. to Sousa).

German wild card Tobias Kamke recorded his first win in four attempts over Jarkko Nieminen as he beat the Finn 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in just under two hours. The Hamburg resident earned just his sixth tour-level win of the season and set a second-round clash with 13th seed Federico Delbonis.

Another German, Dustin Brown, opened with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the 2013 ATP Most Improved Player of the Year. Brown notched his 10th tour-level win of the season, and first since a rout of a No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal last month on grass in Halle. He will look for his third straight win over a Spanish opponent when he next meets No. 9 seed Fernando Verdasco.

Benoit Paire set a second-round clash with 11th seed Santiago Giraldo as he edged Andrey Golubev 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) in one hour and 45 minutes. It stopped a run of four successive first-round defeats for the Frenchman. He is bidding to win back-to-back matches for just the second time this season.

Top seed David Ferrer will face Mikhail Kukushkin in his opening second-round match after the Kazakhstani beat Marsel Ilhan 6-2, 6-2, while No. 2 seed and defending champion Fabio Fognini meets Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic, a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 winner over German Jan-Lennard Struff.

In other second-round matches, third seed Tommy Robredo will challenge qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-2, 6-3. Home favourite and seventh seed Philipp Kohlschreiber will open his campaign against Portuguese qualifier Gastao Elias, who beat Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-3 in 74 minutes.

Stuttgart champion Roberto Bautista Agut, who broke into the Top 20 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday, withdrew with gastroenteritis and has been replaced in the singles draw by Thomaz Bellucci. The Brazilian will play Spaniard Pablo Andujar, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Croatian qualifier Mate Delic.

Third & Fourth Seeds Advance
Third seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez opened their Hamburg campaign with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Andre Begemann and Alexander Zverev. The Spaniards recently reached the Roland Garros final (l. to Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin) and are looking to win their second title of the season.

Miesiąc przed 21. urodzinami, Dominic stanał przed szansą na pierwsze turniejowe zwycięstwo na szczeblu ATP. Szansa pojawiła się na swoich śmieciach - w Kitzbuhel. Mimo oczekiwań miejscowych kibiców i zwycięstwa w pierwszym secie, ostatecznie jednak Austriak musiał uznać wyższość Davida Goffina.
