Grigor Dimitrov
I would like to thank Patrick and the whole Mouratoglou Tennis Academy for all their support. The academy became my home for many years and helped me grow as a player as well as a person. I will miss everyone and I will always keep the years I spent there in a very special place in my heart. Thank you, Patrick and the team!

Dimitrov to be coached by Swedish team

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov has left the Patrick Mouratoglou Academy and has joined the Good to Great Tennis Academy in Sweden, which is run by ex-touring pros Magnus Norman, Nicklas Kulti, and Mikael Tillström.

“We look forward to the challenge of developing Grigor to new heights to reach his ambitious goals in world tennis,” Nicklas Kulti was quoted as saying on Dimitrov’s web site.

Tillström will travel with the 21-year-old to Australia. Dimitrov ended the year ranked No. 48.

Grigor Dimitrov: Always Looking To Improve

Obrazek
Grigor Dimitrov is looking to build on the progress he made in 2012.

Grigor Dimitrov has been touted as one of the future stars of the ATP World Tour by virtue of his talent, flashy shot-making and vibrant personality.

In 2012, Dimitrov showed true signs of promise. Among his highlights, the 21 year old advanced to three tour-level semi-finals, notched his first Top 10 victory against Tomas Berdych in Miami and finished the year ranked inside the Top 50 for the first time with a personal best 24-19 season record.

As part of Compeed’s Form & Fitness Series, Dimitrov discusses his recent relocation to the Good to Great Tennis Academy, the greatest improvement to his game since joining the pro ranks in 2008 and more…

This past season, you became the first Bulgarian to be ranked inside the Top 50. How does it feel to continue breaking new ground for your country?
I think it’s great. My country is really starting to believe in that. They are starting to see we have more than a couple of sports, as tennis is starting to get up there. I’m glad I’m playing for Bulgaria

You're now working at the Good to Great Tennis Academy with Mikael Tillstrom, Magnus Norman and Nicklas Kulti. How have you found things in Sweden?
So far, it’s been great. I’ve been practising there the past few weeks. There’s a lot of snow out there at the moment. It’s a great place, with nice people. Everyone is enjoying working together. We’re all positive that 2013 will bring good things to us.

Where have you seen the greatest improvement in your game since turning professional in 2008?
I think it would definitely be the way I move on court. I think I’ve improved my fitness level. And with my game, I’ve started serving better. I’m still trying to improve all over. Building up is something big for me, so I’m pretty pleased so far.

Where does winning your first title rank on your list of priorities in 2013?
I want to win every tournament possible, of course!

What is an exercise or stretch you’d recommend a recreational player add into their training program?
Everyone views themselves in a different way. In general, you should keep your hips loose and make sure you are stretching. To do the right things, you need to keep yourself in shape.

Which player on tour do you think…

Has the best balance? Rafael Nadal
Is the quickest? Novak Djokovic
Is the most flexible? Gael Monfils
Has the greatest muscular endurance? Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Has the best footwork? Roger Federer
Has the strongest core? Me!

With assistance from Paul Macpherson.

Grigor Dimitrov reaches first ATP World Tour final

World No. 48 Grigor Dimitrov advanced to his first ATP World Tour final on Saturday, edging Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) at the Brisbane International.

The Bulgarian hit 12 aces and won 79 per cent of his first serve points. In the deciding tie-break, he relinquished a mini-break lead at 4-2 and 5-4, but clinched the semi-final encounter on his first match point to prevail over Baghdatis in two hours and 28 minutes. The 21 year old improved to 2-1 against the Cypriot and ended a three-match losing streak in tour-level semi-finals.

“The third set was just matter of who was going to take the first opportunity, the first chance,” Dimitrov said. “I was down break point and stuff, but I tried to come back into the set. So that helped me also to look further ahead. And then when it was a tie-break, it was just a matter of a point… I have to say I'm very, very happy. It’s definitely it's a great feeling.”

Dimitrov has won 44 of his 47 service games during his event debut this week. He knocked out second seed Milos Raonic in the second round and No. 7 seed Jurgen Melzer in the quarter-finals. Dimitrov will bid to become this season’s first maiden title winner on Sunday.

“I have nothing to lose tomorrow,” said Dimitrov. “Whoever I play, I just want to go out there and compose myself and say, ‘Okay, it's your first final. Don't be nervous, at least.’ I think it's going to be a good match. It doesn't matter who I play.”

Dimitrov needed change of scenery

Grigor Dimitrov, who has reached his first career ATP final in Brisbane, explains why he decided to leave his longtime French coaching team at the end last season and join the Good to Great Tennis Academy in Sweden, run by ex-touring pros Magnus Norman, Nicklas Kulti, and Mikael Tillstrom.

“I think the time that I was there, I think it was the appropriate time for me to be [in France],” the 21-year-old said. “It was a great four years. I experienced a lot of things. But think there is a time in life when you want to find the best way for you and improve in what you do. I mean, the years are rolling and you don’t want be stuck at a certain spot, so you got to try things until you actually find the right formula for it. I felt it was time for me to change and experience something new.”

Dimitrov Climbs to Career-High Ranking

Dimitrov, who began the week at No. 48 in the Emirates ATP Rankings is projected to rise to a career-high No. 39 on Monday.

The right-hander said he wasn't overwhelmed with nerves entering ATP World Tour final, and described Murray as one of the sport's best returners. "He's a top guy, so he has his rhythm, his routine on court. He pulled out some really, really good shots when he had to so I didn't feel that I was far, far from winning the set or even the match," he said.

The Bulgarian believes he needs more time on the ATP World Tour before delivering results which feature him in the final weekend of a major. “I think I still need couple of years on the tour to get stronger and be able to hang with these guys all weeks, and especially playing best of five sets,” he said.
