Murray: 'I Need To Enjoy My Struggle'

It was one year ago that Andy Murray began to plot his climb to the top spot of the Emirates ATP Rankings on the European clay. A title in Rome was followed by a run to the final at Roland Garros and the Scot was soaring.
But Murray is the first to admit that his current clay-court campaign is a bit different. Much has changed for the World No. 1 and after consecutive early defeats at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, he is seeking to rediscover his rhythm on the terre battue of Paris.
While he acknowledges that his struggles are real, Murray believes that he needs to embrace them in order to break from them.
“I haven't been doing well recently,” Murray told the assembled media prior to his Roland Garros opener. “The last few months have not been good. I haven't played well. I need to accept that I'm struggling and then find a way to get through it. I will get through it. I'm sure of that. When that happens, I don't know. Hopefully it happens in a few days. Hopefully happens at this event. If it doesn't, maybe it happens during the grass.
“But the only way to get through it is to work your way through it, keep working on your game, try and understand what's not been going right. Although it's very frustrating, you have to try to enjoy this part of what we do, as well, because the struggles are part of what make the good times so enjoyable. I need to enjoy my struggle a little bit just now and that will help me get through it quicker, I believe. The more frustrated you get, it doesn't help either. I'll try and get through it as quickly as I can.
“I don't know exactly why that happens, what the reason for it is, because I still love the travel, I love practising, I love the training aspect. I still love tennis. But it just happens sometimes. I'm sure everyone in here sometimes maybe hasn't enjoyed writing stories for a few weeks sometimes. Maybe there are no interesting stories at the time. And it's not as much fun. Everyone goes through it. But I know why I play tennis; because I love it and I enjoy it. I'll keep plugging away until I get back to where I want to get to.”

Murray is making his 10th appearance at Roland Garros, with his best result coming last year in finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic. The top seed opens against Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov. He leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 2-0, having most recently prevailed in Beijing last year.
A potential blockbuster third-round encounter against Juan Martin del Potro awaits the Scot, with eighth seed Kei Nishikori and ninth seed and reigning Rome champion Alexander Zverev also looming in his quarter of the draw. Murray admits that he has been feeling under the weather recently, but says he will be ready to go for the second Grand Slam of the year.
“I still pretty much got everything done that I needed to do,” Murray added. “I was supposed to practise on Monday here. I traveled on Sunday. Sunday afternoon was when I started to feel a bit sick. It was Monday and Tuesday that I didn't feel great. But I still practised a bit on Tuesday.
“I feel much better just now. I've just got a cough, but I was just a bit sick for a couple of days. It's been frustrating, obviously, because it's happened the third time this year where I have had to miss days or have been in bed. I’m surprise it hasn’t happened more really, considering the amount that we travel and how long the season is. I have been pretty lucky with that over the last couple of years. I have not had too many sort of bad illnesses.
“So maybe they have just come in a small space of time. But I feel okay now. I will be all good when the tournament starts. It happens. We are in the locker rooms with lots of players, lots of sweat, lots of germs and in airplanes all the time. It happens. I practised a few days in London. It was raining and very cold. But I still tried to practise quite hard through that. Maybe that was why I just picked up a little something.”
Murray is slated to open his Roland Garros campaign on Tuesday. He owns a 34-match win streak in Grand Slam first rounds.

Andy Murray struggling with illness again on eve of the French Open as nightmare 2017 continues

Andy Murray faces a race against time to be fit for the French Open as he struggles with yet another illness.

The Scot was absent from Great Britain's Davis Cup quarter-final against France with a flu-type virus in March, having missed all of February due to shingles.

And now Murray is understood to be laid low by fresh illness, for which he is taking antibiotics.

Another energy-sapping bout of sickness is the last thing the 30 year-old needs as he tries to salvage a dreadful start to the year with a strong run at Roland Garros.

After ending 2016 in such good form, Murray's 28-match winning streak was halted by Novak Djokovic in the Qatar Open final at the start of the year. He was then stunned by world No 50 Mischa Zverev in the last 16 of the Australian Open.

Murray went on to miss February as he battled with shingles but the two-time Wimbledon champion returned to form with a win in Dubai in early March, only to be dumped out in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters by Vadek Pospisil.

He later pulled out of the Miami Masters and the Davis Cup before disappointing in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and, last week, Rome.

Those who watched him practice in Italy commented on how quickly Murray was tiring, and with a new illness impacting him just before the French - widely considered the most gruelling of the majors - Murray is approaching the year's second major in far from ideal shape.

Murray: 'Obviously I'm Playing Pretty Good'

Although Andy Murray wasn’t able to reach his second Roland Garros final after falling to Stan Wawrinka in five sets on Friday, the high-quality battle proved Murray is back in business.
Few people would have pegged the Brit to be a set away from a major final at the start of the tournament. He arrived at Roland Garros with a tame 4-4 record on clay this season, and struggled in his first two matches in Paris against Andrey Kuznetsov and Martin Klizan. But the World No. 1 turned the corner in his third round victory against Juan Martin del Potro and continued to improve with each match.
Against Wawrinka, Murray hammered 36 winners and hit plenty of flashy shots throughout their grueling baseline rallies. It’s a level of tennis he knows he simply wasn’t producing a few weeks ago and will need to keep up for the second half of 2017. Barring a poor grass-court season, Murray should retain his hold on the No. 1 Emirates ATP Ranking until at least August, when the likes of Nadal, Wawrinka, Djokovic and Federer could mount a challenge at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati and the US Open.
“I had been working hard in the buildup to the event. I needed to. I needed to spend a lot of time on the court. Not all of the matches were plain sailing for me. They were tricky, so that was good,” said Murray. “I need to understand what worked well this event and in the 10 days of buildup to it. I have to make sure I continue to do that throughout the year, not make any mistakes with my preparation or my training, and hopefully finish the year strong.”

Perhaps the most encouraging sign for Murray is how well he responded physically to a match that lasted four hours and 34 minutes. His right elbow injury prevented him practising at full power as recently as two months ago, but he was still serving and hitting at maximum velocity in the business end of his battle against Wawrinka.
Although he admitted that a comparative lack of stamina played a factor in Wawrinka storming through the final set, he believes that going through a marathon match like this will serve him well for the rest of the season.
“Over four-and-a-half hours, there are going to be periods in the match where you're not hitting the ball as well and your opponent is playing well. You need to try and ride out the storm a little bit,” said Murray. “I expected to have a few more ups and downs in this event than usual because of how I was feeling coming in. I haven't played many matches at that intensity in these past six or seven weeks. Sometimes things can get away from you a little bit quicker in those moments.”

The Brit will now turn his attention to the grass. He’s scheduled to defend his title in less than two weeks at the Aegon Championships in London. Despite the obvious differences between clay and grass, Murray said his experiences in Paris will benefit him as he competes in London.
“I put myself in a position to reach a slam final, so I'm obviously playing pretty good,” said Murray. “Hopefully this gives me a good base to go into the grass-court season. Often when I have done well on the clay, I feel like that's helped me a little bit on the grass. Certainly the matches are not as physical, so going through matches like I did today is a good step for me.”

Andy Murray: 'At 35 I won't win Majors'

Andy Murray lived his best moments on a tennis court in the late stage of his career and he turned 30 last month being world no. 1, but he doesn't expect to have longevity as years go on. The British player, interviewed by Sky Sports, said he will give his best in the upcoming years because he knows he won't be at the highest level for a long time. 'I'm not expecting to be winning Grand Slams until I'm 35 or 36, so I'll try to make the most of the last few years,' Murray said ahead of ATP 500 Queen's.

'That's why, after the French Open, I didn't take a long break. I took a couple of days off then I've been on the grass courts to prepare as best I can. Hopefully I'll get some good matches in at Queen's to set myself up for a good run.

But I need to do everything right in the next few weeks because my game isn't where I'd like it to be.' Murray, who is training at Queen's Club before a very important period of the season for him as he defends 2,500 points in total including Wimbledon title, also spoke about Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who were the first two winners of Grand Slam events so far.

Andy is not surprised by the results his rivals are getting. 'The guys at the top now - Federer, Novak Djokovic and Nadal - are three of the best tennis players that have ever played the game. So even when your level starts to decline, when you're one of the best that's ever played, it's still enough to beat a lot of the players.'

Andy Murray: I would prefer to try a shorter set

World No.1 Andy Murray is supporting changes that will be tested in November at the inaugural Next Generation ATP Finals in Milan. The changes in new rules include a new scoring system, no lets, limited medical timeouts and shot clocks as the men's governing body seeks ways to appeal to younger audiences.

"Tennis is doing very well right now but that doesn't necessarily mean that's going to be the case in the future, so I think it's important to try new formats, different scoring systems and see if it works," Murray told reporters.

"It is good to try new things ... at least it's trying something different. You have to give credit for doing that, because tennis has often been accused of being too traditional, not wanting to try new things." The only change Murray is opposing is the no-advantage scoring rule, where each game will be decided by a sudden-death point at deuce.

“I would prefer to try a shorter set with the same scoring, rather than the sudden-death deuce points,”

Andy Murray is braced to lose the world No. 1 ranking by the end of this year, amid the returns to form of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal after an extended break for the pair at the end of last season.

The Brit enjoyed a scintillating run of form in 2016 after losing the final of the French Open to Novak Djokovic and only suffered two more Tour defeats as he went on to win titles at Queen’s and Wimbledon as well as in Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna, Paris and at the ATP Finals in London.

After such an incredible run, Murray now has 8060 ranking points to defend until the end of 2017, with world No. 2 Nadal sat just 2605 points behind him and having only 370 points to defend in the same period.
And the two-time Wimbledon champion admitted he would struggle to hang on to top spot after a difficult start to the year.
‘If you want to stay as world No. 1, you can’t have three or four months of the year where you’re not winning matches or not performing well in the big events, which is what happened from me from February through to the French Open.

‘So it’s more than likely that that’ll happen, which is fine. I’m not trying to win Wimbledon for rankings points, I’m trying to win Wimbledon – that’s my goal. I’ll train and prepare as best as I can for that.’

Andy Murray will go for more history at the Aegon Championships at The Queen's Club. The ATP World Tour 500 tournament in London starts on Sunday. But the Scot could have to beat three Top 15 players, including World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, if he wants to win an unprecedented sixth Queen's Club crown.

The Brit is once again the top seed at his home tournament and will face a compatriot in the first round, Aljaz Bedene, who reached his second ATP World Tour final earlier this year in Budapest. Murray could next face the big-serving American Sam Querrey, who famously upset Novak Djokovic in the third round at Wimbledon last year.
Prevail in those two matches and Murray's path gets only harder. The 30 year old could meet fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who's already won three titles this season and pushed Murray to five sets in last year's Wimbledon quarter-final. In the semi-finals, the dangerous Nick Kyrgios or fourth seed Marin Cilic could await.

The second-seeded Wawrinka opens against a grass-court veteran in 35-year-old Feliciano Lopez, who has served and volleyed his way to the MercedesCup final in Stuttgart. Lopez faces Frenchman Lucas Pouille for the title on Sunday.
Seventh seed and 2010 Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych could lurk in the quarter-finals, with sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov or third seed and 2016 finalist Milos Raonic possible semi-final opponents for Wawrinka.
The 32-year-old Swiss No. 1 is coming off his second Roland Garros final and is making his fifth appearance at the historic London club. He is 4-4 overall at the tournament and reached the semi-finals in 2014 (l. to Dimitrov).
Raonic, whose only two grass-court losses last season came against Murray in title matches, will look to get his season rolling on the quick surface. The 6'5” Canadian has yet to win a title this season and recently split with coach Richard Kraijcek after less than six months together.
The 26-year-old right-hander opens against wild card and #NextGenATP Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis. Raonic could meet Frenchman Nicolas Mahut or #NextGenATP Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
Fans of booming serves and quick points will want to watch Cilic's opening match. The Croatian faces 6'10” John Isner of the U.S. Cilic could battle another American in Steve Johnson in the second round.
