Lendl offers to coach Murray

Obrazek

Former world number one Ivan Lendl has offered to coach Andy Murray, according to widespread reports in the British media.

Lendl, the winner of eight Grand Slam titles, is believed to have contacted Murray's advisors asking to meet with the struggling Scot.

The Czech-born American seems the ideal person to identify with Murray's current struggles.

During his career, Lendl lost his first four Grand Slam finals before finally going on to win his eight majors, with Wimbledon, where he was a beaten finalist twice, being the only Slam he failed to capture.

Murray has been in two Australian Open finals and one US Open decider - but failed to win so much as a set in the best-of-five contests.

The 23-year-old is in the midst of an alarming slump in form which has seen him crash out of the recent Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami to unheralded Americans Donald Young and Alex Bogomolov Jr respectively.

Murray, who has been coached by Mark Petchey, Brad Gilbert and Miles Maclagan in the past, is currently without a full-time coach.

He employs Alex Corretja as a part-time consultant and has a travelling companion in friend Dani Vallverdu.

Former world number one Roger Federer, now number three in the rankings, has sympathised with Murray's current difficulties.

"I struggled hugely when I was between 19 and 23, so for it to happen once in a while, I don't think it's that much of a worry," he said.

"It's important he picks it up before the French (Open) and Wimbledon but he's too good a player to continue like this, so he'll be all right."

Murray still searching as he sees limits of adidas coaching

Obrazek

Andy Murray's temporary coaching solution might not be the ideal one, with the No. 4 now not allowed to use the coaching brain trust retained by clothing sponsor adidas when he faces another member of the company's player stable.

That essentially means for showdowns against Fernando Verdasco, Jurgen Melzer, Mikhail Youzhny or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the Scot is on his own for advice. Murray admitted: "It's not the fix that I'm looking for," but knows that any help can do him some good as he struggles to escape his current on-court crisis.

Murray has been without a mentor since last summer and only a fortnight ago split with part-time Spanish advisor Alex Corretja. Now the Scot is finding out how hard it is to find someone prepared to travel up to 35 weeks per year.

The adidas programme uses noted coaches including Australian Darren Cahill and Dutchman Sven Groeneveld as advisors for all company players. Murray has reportedly been in talks with various others on for a possible full-time gig but with nothing yet to report.

"I've thought about it quite a lot. I'd like to do it as soon as possible but you need to find the right person. People think it's an easy thing to do but it's really not. There might have to be a bit of sacrifice on my part to go and train wherever the coach is, to make it a bit easier for them."

As the conversation built up a life of its own last week, former pros Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl both said they'd be wiling to work with Murray - if the price was right. But Murray was not taken in by the idle speculation. "I'm looking for someone who can come to the big events with me, who isn't restricted in terms of the weeks they can do," he told British media. "If they can't come to the French Open, for example, then for me that's quite a big negative. I'd like them to be around at the big events."

Murray must seize the moment

Obrazek

Despite his win at Queen's Andy Murray goes into Wimbledon facing questions about his ability to win at the highest level.

The Scot proved his level of play, justified his ranking and showed an ability to shine on all four surfaces of the ATP Tour with his run to the semi-finals of the French Open.

Some doubted him because he had not had any great results on clay until this season.

Now he has made at least the semi-finals of each Grand Slam and beaten the three players ahead of him on several occasions - but has yet to get that first Grand Slam title.

At Roland Garros we witnessed once again both how talented he is but also why he is still unable to take the last step which could transform him from a nearly-man into a winner.

In one sense he is close to his goal because he is capable of beating anyone, but he's also as far away as ever. There are a lot of players in history who were only ever 'bridesmaids'.

Andy is 24 years old so it's a crucial time for him. And a career is often decided by key decisions taken at key times.

The way he played his semi-final against Rafael Nadal shows what the problems are and why he's still not quite on the same level as the top three players.

He was too defensive and lacked intent on crucial points. He had plenty of opportunities in the match even if the Spaniard was overall the better player. Every time Andy could have changed the face of the match he was too passive and chose to let his opponent take the lead during the point.

But this state of mind isn't going to be altered in the middle of a French Open semi-final - it's like a muscle, and you have to train yourself to change it.

It will give him the ability to take the lead on a decisive point, to hit the ball with the intention of dominating, to be fully committed.

Andy knows he can win matches against most players on tour by playing his passive game, and he's now the victim of that gift.

That's why having a coach at his side who has experience and recognises these issues is now mandatory if he wants to go on improving.

Murray has everything it takes to win not just one Grand Slam but several. He has weapons for all surfaces, and a strong temperament.

If he can start to play more intense, attacking tennis regularly then he will be able to display it on the biggest occasions.

He showed glimpses in an entertaining final at Queen's against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and must continue in that vein.

Now is time for him to invest in himself, because it will be worth it.

Postman who scrawled 'Andy Murray is a useless jock' on a poster is fined £3,000 for racism

A postman who called Scottish tennis star Andy Murray a 'useless Jock' has been fined £3,000 - after being convicted of racism.

Postman prat: Darren Swain (left) was fined £3,000 for racism after he scrawled that Scottish tennis star Andy Murray (right) was a 'useless Jock' on a poster

On another poster, he threatened to 'steal as much as possible and send as many letters to the wrong place as possible' after the sorting office where he worked closed for a month last November.

He was caught after Royal Mail investigators installed covert cameras to monitor the area after two of the posters featured 'racist slurs'.

He denied the charges but was found guilty of three counts of criminal damage and two of racially aggravated criminal damage. He must also pay an additional £3,000 costs.

Magistrate Norman Wainwright said: 'We have had particular regard for the racially aggravated elements of this case.

'We have decided that it is serious enough for us to impose a community sentence.'

The posters were put up in June and July last year in the first floor toilets of Royal Mail's sorting office in Coventry - two floors from where Swain worked during night shifts.

When the building closed for a month last November, a spate of graffiti appeared claiming that Royal Mail was 'ruining' lives.

On one, Swain even threatened legal action, signing it off with 'see you in court'.

Before he was due to leave the office for the month-long closure he wrote: 'Three weeks to steal as much as possible and send as many letters to the wrong place as possible.'

Handwriting experts were called in to examine the graffiti who finally identified Swain as the culprit.

Andris Skudra, defending, said: 'He has had this hanging over him for some considerable time.

'When he was dismissed he lost a great deal financially - he was due to receive £5,000. This is a very sad case.'

Trying to make sense of Murray's loss

Obrazek

It has to be said that Andy Murray's defeat to Kevin Anderson, particularly the manner of it, was a big surprise and it is a tough one to make sense of.

The first thing I think that needs to be said is that Anderson has such a big game that when he is on form he can be a nightmare for any player in the world to deal it.

Murray said himself that he felt slow and couldn't really get going but there is also a danger with Murray that when he is forced to play on the back foot, like he was against Anderson, he is always going to struggle.

No matter how good a return player Murray is, the old adage applies - a good attacking player will always beat a good defensive player.

I think Murray has changed his game for the better in recent years; he has come out of his shell more and more and is willing to attack more aggressively, especially in the big matches.

However, when he is forced into a near total defensive strategy, which he was against Anderson, these lopsided defeats can happen - we've seen it happen to him before.

The next point I'd make, and I'll probably get criticised for making this point by those readers who think I'm Murray's best friend and cheerleader (which I'm not), is something that Murray has not mentioned at all but I think may be factor.

Murray has just come back from a training camp in Miami where he really pushed himself to the limit. Did he overdo it and is this a bit of payback? I have an inkling that he may not have restored full strength yet because you can imagine how hard he goes at it.

He did not say this was a factor, and it may not be true, but it is in the back of my mind that it might have had something to do with the defeat. He may have needed just another two or three days before returning to competitive action.

The extreme optimists might say that it is a good thing he has lost because it reverses the trend of his US Open build-up of recent years when he has done so well in Canada but faded in New York but I can't subscribe to that. Ask Novak Djokovic if winning so many build-up matches this year has had a negative effect on him?

Winning is winning and it becomes habit, and we have to accept that when it comes to the ATP Tour, Murray has lost his last two matches.

At this time of the year, Murray would like to be playing as much as he can. He played Davis Cup a few weeks back, but other than that it has been a big break for him since Wimbledon.

Everybody goes on about how crowded the tennis calendar is, but it sure is pretty quiet at the moment. After Wimbledon there is plenty of time for the top players to rest-up and get ready for the US Open.

So there are two elements of concern after this match for Murray. The first is of course that he was beaten so easily by a player who is much lower down the rankings than him. And the second is that he is now short of match practice - so he needs to have a big run next week in Cincinnati to find his touch back.

One thing you have to say in Murray's defence is that he will do anything there is to try and reach the highest level.

In the run-up to this event that he was talking about changing his diet and I feel that is more of a psychological move than anything else, as he feels he needs to do something to try and catch up with the top guys.

You hear him say the same thing after every big defeat: "I'll try even harder" - well I don't think he can try any harder - nobody works as hard as him off the court.

It might just be a case of bad luck that he has grown up in an era where three of the best players of all-time have been playing the game.

If he was around at the time when the likes of Andy Roddick and Leyton Hewitt were winning Grand Slams then Murray could have won three of four Slams by now.

Is he better than Roddick? Absolutely in my opinion, and I feel same with Hewitt; I'd even say that Murray is a much better player than someone like Jim Courier was - and he won four Grand Slams.

But you just wonder if there is anything that Murray can do to make the small, yet significant step, from making Grand Slam finals to winning them.

Murray can't wait for his favorite major to start

Obrazek

Murray can't wait for his favorite major to start Andy Murray is always excited this time of the year with his favourite Grand Slam approaching. The Scot has had a career-long affinity for the most raucous of the majors and won a junior title before losing the 2008 final to Roger Federer.

"I went there when I was 15 years old. It was the first time we got put up in like a five star hotel when I was a kid. It's a fun place to go to, so I really like that," said the world No. 4.

"It was different compared to all the other junior events. You got to eat in the restaurant with the other players. I got to meet players like Guillermo Coria, he was one of my favorite players growing up.

"I watched Tim Henman and Roger Federer putting on the putting machine before they played the semi-finals when I was 16 or 17. And then when I went and watched some matches on the Arthur Ashe Court, watched Henin against Clijsters final, and also Henman against Federer.

"I thought the atmosphere on that court was the most completely different to other courts in the world. That's why I enjoyed it."

Murray Wins Second Cincinnati Crown

Obrazek

World No. 4 Andy Murray won his second title at the Western & Southern Open, defeating top seed Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. Murray led the World No. 1 6-4, 3-0 before Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury. "It was really a good week after I struggled last week. I didn't drop a set and beat some very good players from pretty much the first round onwards," Murray said. "Against Nalbandian who I started off against it was tough, and then Mardy was playing really good tennis going into the semis."

Murray broke Djokovic to start the match, and after relinquishing his break lead in the sixth game, the Scot won six of the next seven games before Djokovic retired midway through the second set. "I would have obviously liked to have won by finishing the match," admitted Murray.

"But it happens sometimes. I have to look at the week as a whole. It's been a very good week. Coming in here I had played badly in Montréal, so I needed to have a good week. Regardless of the match today, I was happy with the way that it had gone. Glad I managed to win today, but unfortunate the way it happened."

The title is Murray’s second of the season, after winning the AEGON Championships in June (d. Tsonga). The 24-year-old London resident claimed his seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown and second in Cincinnati, having also defeated Djokovic in the 2008 final. Murray improved to a 4-6 record against the Serb.

Djokovic lost for just the second time this season (57-2), and was bidding to win his 10th title in 2011 and first at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Last week's Rogers Cup champion was looking to pull off a Masters 1000 double for the third time this season, having triumphed back-to-back at Indian Wells and Miami, and Rome and Madrid. "I just could not serve. I served an average 90 miles per hour the first serve, and I could not play forehands," said Djokovic. "I could have maybe played another couple of games, but what for? I cannot beat a player like Murray today with one stroke."

Added Djokovic, "There is no good loss, that's for sure. But the good thing is that there is a week, eight days [before] the start of the US Open. So I think that's enough time for me to get ready."

Murray ready for New York road trip

Obrazek

Murray ready for New York road trip Andy Murray was in a hurry to get himself and his team to New York to begin final preparation for the US Open.

The Scot, who won a second Cincinnati title in three years when Novak Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury in the second set of their final, was even prepared to make the journey to the Big Apple a road trip if wet weather from the remnants of a hurricane made flying into the northeast tough.

Murray got some solace for an opening exit at the Montreal event where he was defending the title, with his Cincinnati trophy, only his second this season. "It was really a good week after I struggled last week," said the winner who didn't drop a set.

"It was unfortunate the way it ended, but I thought the first set, after the first couple of games was a good standard. A lot of long rallies, good points - it's been good preparation for New York.

"The plan is to be feeling perfect going into the Grand Slams. That's really been my goal this year, and done a good job at it so far."

Murray said that despite injuries to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, he's sure his rivals will pull up fit when it counts. "I'm sure come the start of the US Open next Monday, all of them will be fine. I think each one of them will be playing great tennis, much better than they have played here."

Murray tweets his earthquake reaction

Obrazek

Murray tweets his earthquake reaction Andy Murray hit the Twitter "Send" button as he felt the shocks from the earthquake which rattled the eastern United States this week, then got back to the more important business of training for the US Open.

The 2008 finalist told his followers of his immediate reaction to the tremors which were said to have shaken the upper levels of the Ashe stadium at Flushing Meadows. "Earthquake at flushing meadows! Weird weird feeling thought I was just dizzy...."

"Earthquake was in Washington dc 5.8, was only the after shocks here in new york strange feeling hope everyone is ok in dc."

Murray is trying to build on the confidence he gained from winning the Cincinnati title at the weekend over Novak Djokovic as the Serb lost only his second match of a standout 2011 season.

But there is no room for complacency against higher-ranked rivals Djokovic, No.2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer even if none of them appear to currently be as sharp coming in as the Scot ranked fourth.

"Those guys (Djokovic, Nadal and Federer) could end up making the semis of the US Open, then you get to see if it's a chance," said Murray, who has lost all three of the Grand Slam finals he has played to Federer (New York, 2008, Australia, 2010) and Djokovic (Australia in January)."

"If all of them lose early, obviously my chances would go up. But I'm sure come the start of the US Open on Monday, all of them will be fine. I think each one will be playing great tennis - better than they've played (in Cincinnati)."

Murray Dismisses Talk Of “Best Ever Chance”

Obrazek

World No. 4 Andy Murray has dismissed claims by John McEnroe that this is his best chance of winning a Grand Slam title. Four-time US Open champion McEnroe said, "The hungriest man in the draw should be Murray. I think this is his best shot to win one."

Murray comes into the US Open as one of the most in-form players, having won the Cincinnati title when Novak Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury, while Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both failed to advance past the quarter-finals in either Montreal or Cincinnati. However, the Scot is only too well aware that it will have little bearing when the starting whistle blows.

“It's a silly thing to say. It will be Federer is not playing well and Rafa is struggling and Djokovic's shoulder is sore. But I know come Monday they'll all be fine,” said Murray, a three-time Grand Slam runner-up, including at this year’s Australian Open. “I have a chance of winning for sure. Whether it's my best chance or not, no one has a clue about that.

“Someone like John, who has played thousands of matches probably knows that one bad day and you can put yourself out of the tournament. You're going to have to play an incredible event to win. So I feel like I'm ready to do that. But to say it's my best chance, no one knows.”

As well as reaching the Australian Open final, the 24-year-old Murray has also been a semi-finalist at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year, and is happy with his form as he bids to try and become the first British male Grand Slam champion since 1936.

“Come the end of the week in Cincinnati I was playing some of my best tennis,” said Murray, the 2008 US Open runner-up. “I have been hitting the ball well, but I still felt like there were some things I could have improved upon, which was really nice coming in this week, being able to work on some things and not feeling like I was almost recovering before the US Open. I felt like this week I have been preparing for it and looking forward to it.”

Murray opens his campaign against India’s Somdev Devvarman and is in the same half of the draw as defending champion Rafael Nadal.
